Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.

Then he meets Safyre, an infuriating human female, and he considers breaking his vow.

Safyre will do anything to save her friend, the being she loves like a sister. She’ll ravish a huge hunky cyborg, kiss his best friend, and invoke scorching hot desires the male never realized he could feel. Dark soulful eyes, a quick wit, and a tempestuous passion won’t divert her from her mission.

Love, and a planet-destroying weapon, however, might stop her permanently.

Hers To Command – Third Scene

By Cynthia Sax on January 30, 2017

Hers To Command, the next story in the cyborg series, is releasing February 14th (Valentine’s Day). It is available for pre-order now.

This week, I’ll be sharing the third scene in the first chapter.

You can read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/01/16/hers-to-command-first-scene/

***

She’d once had a healthy sex drive. Carys sat naked on the edge of the sleeping support. And she’d been careless, wild. That was how she’d ended up pregnant at eighteen solar cycles.

“That wasn’t a mistake.” She opened a projectile-proof container, withdrew a tiny cloth square. “You weren’t a mistake. You were a gift.”

She unwrapped the pair of tiny boots from the protective fabric, lifted the footwear closer to her face, inhaled deeply. Pimmy’s baby scent lingered on the leather. “I wanted you.”

Her daughter’s brown curls had bounced against her round cheeks as she ran after Carys that last planet rotation, half a lifetime ago. “Mommy. Mommy. I go with you.” She’d reached out her chubby arms.

Carys, angry with Pimmy’s father, hadn’t taken her. If she had, Pimmy might still be alive. Her daughter wouldn’t have died in the Humanoid Alliance attack, killed by emotionless cyborgs. Carys’ lips flattened. Machines had coldly executed her baby.

“There won’t be a planet rotation that passes that I won’t think of you.” Carys vowed. “You will always have a piece of my heart.”

She bowed her head, resting it against the tiny pair of boots. The toes were slightly scuffed, the leather rough against her chin. Her rambunctious daughter would kick empty containers, enjoying the ringing sound that action made.

Pimmy was why Carys fought, why she had to continue fighting. She’d joined the rebellion immediately after her daughter’s death.

“You are strong. You are intelligent. You are loved.” Carys kissed the boots, wrapped them in the cloth square, set the makeshift package back in the container and closed the lid.

There were no images of Pimmy in the chamber. They weren’t needed. She saw her daughter every time she dreamed.

Carys relived that last planet rotation over and over again. Her grief might be old, but it was fresh, the pain cutting into her every rest cycle.

She curled up on the sleeping support, drew a concealing cloth over her naked body, closed her eyes, and searched the blackness for her baby’s face.

* * *

“We should wake her,” a male rumbled.

“Slow your processors, ass,” a different male with an even deeper voice replied. “Our female needs this rest cycle. Look at her.”

“I can’t look away.” A calloused finger caressed her cheek and Carys murmured, pressing her face against the warmth, the contact heating her all over. “She has silver in her hair. None of the other females had silver in their hair.”

She must be dreaming. Carys smiled ruefully, part of her wishing she wasn’t. Only fantasy males would be enchanted with gray hair.

And no beings could enter her chambers uninvited. She had the sole authority to open the doors. She’d have to settle for an imaginary rendezvous with her warriors.

The concealing cloth lifted. Cool air swept over her, tightening her nipples.

“She has markings on her breasts, stomach, upper thighs.”

Yes, this was a dream. The male sounded as though he admired her stretch marks.

“And her curves are lush, enough for two warriors.”

They liked larger females. She glowed, feeling beautiful. This was the best sexual fantasy she’d ever had.

“We shouldn’t uncover her without her permission.” Skin slapped against skin. The concealing cloth lowered once more. “Human females are accustomed to privacy.”

Carys opened her eyes and gazed up at the brown-eyed warrior from the corridor, not surprised they were the males her mind had fabricated. “You have my permission.”

“Frag yes.” The blue-eyed male didn’t hesitate, pulling the concealing cloth off her body. “You’re stunning, my female.”

“Our female,” the brown-eyed male corrected.

They gazed at her with a pussy-clenching lust, their expressions reinforcing their words. Her fantasy warriors did believe she was stunning.

Carys shamelessly allowed them to survey her naked body. Two young, fit males were looking at her. That turned her on.

They remained clad in their tight body armor. Her brain must have been too exhausted to envision them nude. She did have the energy to imagine long, thick ridges in that body armor.

They were big all over. Carys skimmed her tongue over her bottom lip. She liked that.

The blue-eyed male groaned. “I need you, our female.” He captured her face between his big palms and covered her mouth with his.

She gasped. He pushed his tongue inside her. Flesh slid over flesh. A peculiar bubbling sensation spread over her, the fizzing and popping exciting her.

She clutched his body armor-clad shoulders, holding onto him. He tasted like metal, male, and desire.

“My turn, Thrasher.” The brown-eyed male turned her face toward him and claimed her lips. His fingers framed her jaw, his clasp on her light, yet sure.

When the blue-eyed male, the male her brain had bizarrely named Thrasher, had kissed her, it had been breath-catchingly savage. He had surged forward, his rhythm sporadic and wild.

His friend was more methodical, more restrained, leisurely exploring her mouth, learning the shape, the feel of her, what she liked, and what she didn’t. The taste of him was the same, as was the bubbling, the fizzing intensifying.

Thrasher plundered other areas of her. He dragged his lips down her neck, across her collarbone. Carys arched her back, needing his hot mouth on her curves.

Her dream male didn’t hesitate, mouthing over her right breast, cupping her left with one of his hands. As his friend ravished her lips, sucking on her tongue, he tugged on her skin and released, tugged and released.

She had two young males adoring her. They were fully clothed, not expecting or needing their own sexual fulfillment. The focus was on her, her body, her pleasure.

The Cyborg Homeland

By Cynthia Sax on January 27, 2017

In Hers To Command (releasing February 14th, available for pre-order now), we get the first glimpse of the Cyborg Homeland, the planet far away from Humanoid Alliance territory which the cyborgs have claimed for their own.

Here’s a snippet…

***

The Homeland would hold little appeal for their human female. With more and more cyborgs escaping the Humanoid Alliance’s control, the planet was becoming crowded. Structures were thousands of levels high. Ships filled the skies.

There were talks of terraforming more planets in the sector but no action had been taken. The priority was freeing their brethren.

Ace’s priority was their female’s happiness. If she chose to settle elsewhere, he would support that decision, celebrate it. He was conscious of his special bond with Thrasher, a bond many warriors didn’t understand, and would rather not live in close quarters with other males.

Space was preferable and, ideally, surroundings they could more easily control. He’d enjoyed the privacy they’d experienced on their female’s battle station. They were better able to protect their female there.

***

This might not seem like an ideal Homeland to you or I but we’re not cyborgs. Cyborgs are accustomed to living in close quarters with their brethren. While they were enslaved to the Humanoid Alliance, they didn’t have their own chambers or privacy. Hundreds of cyborgs would share one small space. Now freed, many of them would find solitude uncomfortable, perhaps even unbearably lonely.

The cyborg council also requires many living spaces to be build quickly. Every planet rotation, thousands of cyborgs are freed. All of these warriors require living spaces and they’ve run out of room on the planet’s surface. The logical solution is to build upward.

What about flowers, trees, and other vegetation?

Cyborgs have lived their entire lifespans on ships and in compounds. They’re unaccustomed to green spaces. When building, they wouldn’t consider adding parks and other natural areas to their designs. (Green, with his love of Windy, his plant, is viewed as unusual.)

I suspect once the cyborgs free their brethren, this 100% logical approach to planning might change. (They ARE half human.) The cyborgs will progress beyond utilitarian housing to creating living spaces as diverse and as wonderfully designed as they are.

An Introvert’s Guide To Talking About Our Books (Self-Promotion)

By Cynthia Sax on January 25, 2017

Many writers, myself included, are introverts. We prefer not to talk. Period. Talking about our books is extra painful because they’re OUR books. That smacks of self-promotion.

The issue is if we don’t talk about our books, no one will know how kick ass they are. They won’t buy them. They won’t read them. I heard in a podcast that there are over 6,000 books a DAY loaded to Amazon. It is easy for our release to get lost.

When I first sent my stories to publishers, I thought my publishers would promote my stories. I was wrong. They simply don’t have the time or money to promote every book. Even the largest, most financially successful publishers have to pick their battles. Normally, they choose to promote their bestsellers. To become one of these bestsellers, we have to either promote our books ourselves or find someone else who will promote our books for us.

Notice I didn’t say self-promote.

Because when we promote our stories, we’re not merely promoting ourselves. We’re promoting our cover artists, our editors, our formatters, our publishers (if we have them), our agents (again, if we have them). We have a team behind our stories and this team benefits from the success of our books.

When I pimp Hers To Command on a Facebook group, for example, more folks see my awesome cover. Some of these folks are writers and publishers. They might hire Amanda (from http://razzdazzdesign.com/ ), my talented cover artist. If they buy and read the story, they might hire ELF ( from https://musingsbyelf.wordpress.com/ ), my skilled editor, or Mark (from http://marksebookformatting.com/ ), my always-current-with-the-trends formatter.

These wonderful members of my team are counting on me to promote my stories. They do well when my stories do well. I can’t let them down.

This is what I tell myself as I promote my stories. I have an amazing team behind me. They deserve recognition and the best way I can give them that is to talk about my stories.

Another thing I tell myself when I promote my stories is… I’m not spamming the world. I’m telling ONE reading/writing/reviewing/blogging buddy about my story. Using the Facebook group example, I’ll look at the Members section (in the top right hand corner). Facebook shows me common friends.

I’ll focus on one of these friends. I’m not telling the group about Hers To Command. I’m telling Jannie. She likes my cyborgs. I tell her everything. And I know she’d be sad if I didn’t tell her about my upcoming release. I certainly don’t want Jannie to be sad. She’s my friend. So this post is for her. Because I love her and I think she’ll enjoy the story.

The post is no longer spamtastic. I’m not ‘bothering’ anyone (one of my great fears). I’m talking with my buddy. If someone complains (which is very rare – Romance readers love to hear about upcoming romance releases, especially releases writers are excited about), well, the message wasn’t meant for that unhappy person. It was meant for my friend.

That leads me to my final point. It is OKAY to be excited about our upcoming releases. That whole jaded, cynical, seen-it-all act? It’s cheating you out of joy and it isn’t fooling anyone.

Be happy. Tell the world. Share why you HAD to write this story, why you can’t wait for us to read it. Follow the promo rules but let your enthusiasm show. Get giddy. Happy dance.

Your stories deserve to be read. Tell folks about them!

Hers To Command – Second Scene

By Cynthia Sax on January 23, 2017

Hers To Command, the next story in the cyborg series, is releasing February 14th (Valentine’s Day). It is available for pre-order now.

This week, I’ll be sharing the second scene in the first chapter.

You can read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/01/16/hers-to-command-first-scene/

***

They separated slightly as they approached, allowing her to walk between them. She passed them. Their fingertips brushed along the back of her hands, skimming over her knuckles. She shuddered, the impact felt to her toes.

Then she realized what had happened.

She was the commander and they had dared to touch her.

“Warriors.” Carys turned.

And smacked face first into the space traffic officer.

“Sorry, Commander.” The male straightened. “I didn’t mean to hit you.” She stepped to her right. He stepped to his left, his expression earnest. “I wasn’t paying attention and–”

“Stand still, Officer,” she barked.

He froze.

She shifted until he no longer blocked her view and scanned the corridor. The males were gone. They must have entered one of the chambers positioned along the narrow space.

“Those two males who passed us—do they report to you?” She frowned at her officer.

“No, Commander.”

Of course he didn’t know them. Carys gritted her teeth. That would have been too easy. She turned and stalked toward her private chambers. Weariness weighed on her shoulders and affected her judgment. She had to rest before she said something she’d regret.

Her space traffic officer followed her, chattering about the increased staffing he required. Maybe she should assign the two warriors to the docking bay. The lack of fighting there would be punishment for touching her.

If they had touched her. She was so exhausted; she was no longer certain.

It didn’t make sense for two subordinates to take that action. She might not know them but they would know her. She was their commander.

Even if they didn’t recognize her, her uniform would have relayed her status. Disrespecting a superior officer was a fast route to a demotion.

Why would they risk that?

And what was their reward? They’d touched her hands, the most accessible part of her body. If they had extended their open palms in greeting, she would have grasped them. That would have been acceptable contact with a superior.

Fingers had grazed over each of her hands. Their touching was synchronized. What were the odds that both of the warriors would take that risk at the same time?

Very low.

Fuck. She was tired, couldn’t think straight. Carys wanted to rub her hands over her face but she couldn’t. It would be seen as weakness, might worry her crew.

Everyone always watched her, trying to read her secrets, foresee her commands.

Carys arrived at the entrance to her private chambers. Her space traffic officer continued to talk, his chatter a stream of words she couldn’t comprehend, filling her sleep-deprived brain.

“We’ll discuss this next shift, Officer.” She dismissed him.

The male wandered away.

She placed her hand on the control panel. The doors opened. She stepped over the threshold. The doors closed.

Carys exhaled noisily, sagging against the wall. She had peace and quiet and complete privacy. Her chambers were soundproof, due to the secrecy of the information she was entrusted with, and they were secure, one of the safest spots on the battle station.

Viewscreens covered almost every vertical surface, allowing her to survey key areas of the vessel. There was a chair and a horizontal support positioned in a corner for completing work in solitude. Containers held the few personal items she had. A large sleeping support dominated the other side of the space, a relic of the previous commander, a male with a reputation for wild sexual encounters.

She’d never shared it with anyone. Ever. She couldn’t remember the last time she was held, touched in a romantic way.

Her thoughts returned to the two large males.

They were young, fit, handsome. Carys removed her boots, her uniform, folding the garment into a neat square, placing it on the horizontal support. If she wasn’t the commander, if she’d had fewer solar cycles of living, she might have invited the warriors back to her chambers.

Both of them.

One More Solution To The Cast Of Thousands Problem

By Cynthia Sax on January 20, 2017

A popular Romance writing guideline, I try to follow, is to reduce the number of minor characters in a scene as much as possible. Every minor character takes page time away from the romantic couple (or more). He/she shifts the reader’s focus from them permanently. For the rest of the story, the reader has to remember this minor character.

Reducing the number of minor characters isn’t always possible. In Hers To Command, the heroine is a battle station Commander. She works with over a dozen direct reports (her Officers). I wanted to show her in this role, in charge, in her realm of power. That meant interacting with these minor characters. It would look bizarre if she strolled onto the bridge and was completely alone. (grins)

When I wrote the first draft, I gave all of these direct reports first and last names. They also had positions, which I often linked to these names to clarify what they did. It became an unwieldy mess. Halfway through writing the story, I was completely confused.

That got me thinking… if I’m confused, what is the Commander feeling? She’s often in high stress situations, battles to the death. Every moment counts. When she gives an order, she can’t issue it to the wrong being.

At the beginning of the story, she’s also on the losing side of the war. There’s constant turnover in her personnel because not everyone survives every battle. She has to learn names again and again, which would increase the risk of getting names wrong.

The solution I derived was to refer to all of her direct reports by their position only.

Here is a snippet from the story…

***

“Do you detect any activity, First?” Carys knew the female’s name, knew which small planet her officer had originated from, knew she had lost her mother, father, two sisters and two brothers in a Humanoid Alliance attack.

But she never used her first officer’s name. Carys had made that mistake once, solar cycles ago, when she was a warship captain.

Beings died in war. That was the unfortunate reality. Her officers were constantly changing, the dead being replaced with the living.

During an attack, she’d referred to her weapons officer by his predecessor’s name. The correction and the delay it had caused, slight yet significant, had resulted in a crew member’s death.

From that moment onward, she referred to beings by their position, by their function. That policy appeared cold and impersonal to outsiders. Carys didn’t care. She was interested in ending a war, not winning a popularity contest.

***

Looking at the cast of thousands issue from the main character’s point of view might give you solutions you haven’t yet considered. Hey, it worked for me. (grins)

How have you solved this common problem?

Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, And Losing A Child

By Cynthia Sax on January 18, 2017

Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia, died on December 27th. Many people were shocked when Debbie Reynolds, her Mom, died a day later.

My own Dear Wonderful Mom, sadly, understood why that happened.

You see… my Dear Wonderful Mom has also lost a child. She knows what that does to a Mom, the toll it takes on a person. Although they were physically far apart, had never met each other, my Mom felt emotionally close to Debbie Reynolds. She shared the star’s grief.

My tough-as-beans Mom has survived many traumatic things in her life but, hands down, she’ll tell you, the worst thing was my brother dying (my middle of three brothers). I remember flying home for the funeral and barely recognizing her. Her hair had turned white. Lines had appeared on her normally smiling face. My Mom looked like she had aged a decade overnight.

She kept repeating over and over that it wasn’t natural. She was supposed to go first. No Mother should ever outlive her child.

That death changed her forever.

I was thinking of my Dear Wonderful Mom when I wrote Hers To Command. The Commander, Carys, has also lost a child. Twenty-two solar cycles (years) later, she continues to grieve. She thinks of her daughter every planet rotation (day). She feels sorrow, guilt, anger, worries about forgetting her child.

Those are my Mom’s emotions. It has been over two decades since my brother’s death and she still experiences all of those same feelings. They’re more manageable now but they exist.

She wonders if she could have done or said something that would have saved my brother. She sees something that reminds her of him (like anything to do with Star Wars) and cries. There’s always an empty seat at my Mom’s table over the holidays for my brother. We all know not to sit there. She buys an angel ornament for the tree on his behalf. I call her on my brother’s birthday because I know she needs someone to talk to, someone who will understand why these feelings remain, someone who won’t tell her to ‘get over it.’

Carys’ feelings are based on my Mom’s. If you’ve lost a child (big hugs), these might not be your feelings and that’s okay. We all love and grieve differently. But I wanted to share that if you’re still grieving twenty years plus later, that’s also okay. If you worry about forgetting your child, that worry is okay too.

I doubt you will ever forget your child. My Mom is reminded of my brother every day. And I doubt you will ever ‘get over it’ and return to the person you were before your child’s passing. It has changed you just like loving him or her changed you. That’s okay also.

If you’ve lost a child (gives you another big hug), I strongly suggest you read Hers To Command in private. I would completely understand if you saved the story to read when you feel up to it, when you need to cry, when you need to know you’re not alone in your grief. Please don’t read the reviews. As my Dear Wonderful Mom will tell you, there are some people who just don’t understand what you’re going through. Know, however, that there are people who DO.

You are not alone.

Hers To Command – First Scene

By Cynthia Sax on January 16, 2017

Hers To Command, the next story in the cyborg series, is releasing February 14th (yes, Valentine’s Day). It is available for pre-order now. I’ll be sharing the first chapter over the next few weeks.

***

Chapter One

Carys was tired, emotionally and physically.

She’d joined the Rebels twenty-two solar cycles ago, at the beginning of the rebellion against the Humanoid Alliance, and had worked her way up the ranks. Now she was commander of a massive battle station, responsible for thousands of beings.

Having just worked three shifts in a row, exhaustion had caught up to her.

Squinting at the main viewscreen, she tried to focus her eyes. The battle station was in open space. There wasn’t a planet or another vessel nearby. She dropped her gaze to her control panel. There had been a slight malfunction a few moments ago, but all of the systems were now working properly.

The battle station was as serene as a massive vessel could be.

Her first officer wiggled in the chair beside hers. Her protégé was eager to take the helm. She was young, aggressive, relished a challenge, and was hungry for a ship of her own.

The human female would have to wait. The battle station belonged to Carys. She’d earned it, would keep it.

“There’s no unusual activity, Commander,” her first officer reported.

“Then you have the bridge, First.” Carys stood.

Her first officer jumped to her feet.

Carys suppressed her smile. Her exhaustion made one being happy.

She glanced around her one more time, assuring all was calm, and exited the bridge.

Beings snapped to attention as she marched along the corridors. Male, female, undefined gender, human, Palavian, Tau Cetian, Dracheon, others, watched her, their leader. If the beings were competent and added value, she didn’t care what else they were. They were welcome on her battle station.

“Commander.” Her space traffic officer, an overly intense Ungarian male, rushed toward her, his blue-furred face damp with perspiration. “I verified that no unauthorized beings have accessed the battle station through the docking bay.”

She continued walking, not at all reassured. He’d given her the same update five planet rotations ago and they’d ended the shift with one missing medic, a docking bay filled with dead bodies, and no suspects.

It was strange. The space had been monitored. She’d reviewed the footage. But there hadn’t been one image of the shooter…or shooters. There hadn’t been any records of ships that hadn’t belonged there.

Requiring guidance, she’d relayed the situation to the Rebel Assembly. Her superiors hadn’t given her any additional insights. Instead, they’d questioned her competence, chiding her for her lack of knowledge. A commander should be aware of everything that happened on her battle station.

She wanted to blame the space traffic officer for that criticism. Judging by the corpses, the killer or killers had entered through his domain, yet he’d been oblivious of what was happening.

But she couldn’t do that. The Assembly was right. She was the commander. The battle station was her responsibility.

The space traffic officer trailed her, giving her an update she half listened to. Her weary mind dwelled on the attack. She didn’t like unanswered questions and it continued to bother her. There was something she was missing. She felt that truth.

Two massive males, taller and broader than any she’d met, entered the corridor, diverting her attention. They were clad in form-fitting black body armor, the garments decorated with daggers, guns and other weapons.

The males were warriors. Carys’ nipples tightened and her pussy grew wet. She couldn’t remember the last time she reacted physically to any being. She’d thought that part of her lifespan was over, decimated by the war, by responsibility.

They strode toward her, their shoulders broad, their hips narrow, the muscles on their chests, arms, and legs defined.

Her head tilted back. The warriors had a similar look, both had closely cropped brown hair, golden skin, their features strong, stark. One black mark was slashed across each cheek, accentuating their primitive appearance.

As they neared her, their gazes fixed on her face. One male had brown eyes, dark and intense. The other had blue eyes, sparkling with humor, with life, belying his blank expression.

She didn’t recognize either of them. That wasn’t surprising. They’d lost quite a few beings in the last clash with the Humanoid Alliance and she hadn’t yet met all of their replacements.

The battle station’s ranks had also swelled since the Retrievers, the Humanoid Alliance’s bounty hunters, had revolted. Beings had less fear of being recovered once they rebelled.

Her gaze drifted over the males. They were formidable. She was glad these two warriors were on her side of the war.

Retiring Stories

By Cynthia Sax on January 12, 2017

On December 31st, two major writing-related things happened for me. First, ARe (All Romance eBooks) went out of business. Second, I received all of my rights back from Ellora’s Cave (which has also, sort of, kind of, went out of business).

What this means is some older Cynthia Sax stories have disappeared from booksellers. The cyborg stories are still there. (grins) Don’t worry about them. They’re not going anywhere. But my older SciFi Romance stories (and one more recent contemporary story) have disappeared.

Some of these stories will be retired. Why? Because these series have long been completed and I’ve become more skilled as a writer. Rewriting these stories would take as long as writing a new story. I might as well write another cyborg story for you.

As of today, I only have plans to rewrite one of the series – the Warlord SciFi Romance series (Warlord’s Bounty, Warlord Unarmed, Warlord Reunited and Warlord’s Mercy). I will be expanding these stories to novel length (i.e. doubling their length) and tweaking them to be set in the same world as the cyborg series. I hope to start re-releasing these stories in June.

The plots and characters in these novels will be very similar to those in the novellas. Should you rebuy them? I wouldn’t. (laughs) Yeah, it would be more financially savvy of me not to tell you that but you’ll always get the truth from me.

If you already own these stories, save your cash for the brand new stories. If you haven’t read these stories, you’re in for a treat. I’m re-releasing them because I love them.
