Appearances Can Be Deceiving

By Cynthia Sax on March 22, 2022

In my stories, actually… in most romances, appearances are usually deceiving.

The cyborg warriors, for example, often wear a cold, blank mask when they’re with people they don’t know or trust. They have perfected this act so well; many humans in their universe think they’re machines.

At their first meeting.

Once they’ve interacted genuinely with the cyborgs, they realize these warriors simmer with fierce emotion. Cyborgs hate their enemies with an all-consuming passion. And they love their genetic matches as fervently.

The human heroine in the story I’m currently working on (Provoking Odium, releasing in June) has a false façade also. She looks and acts tough, tells everyone she doesn’t give a flying f*ck about them. But stars, that’s such a lie. She cares. Perhaps too much. And she might be the most emotionally fragile character I’ve ever written.

I can’t wait for you to meet her! (big hugs)

Seizing Power

This cyborg believes he’s in control.

Power is the self-appointed leader of the cyborg council. Other members might debate situations. He makes the ultimate decisions.

When a threat to Homeland is revealed, he takes command of a fleet and ventures to the edge of cyborg-controlled space to investigate. He finds a rebellion led by a mysterious upstart he calls Cadet.

The plan Power derives is simple—he’ll quickly quash the uprising and teach its leader a lesson the warrior will never forget.

NO ONE challenges his authority.

Eirene Ours might be called a cadet by Power but she is NOT his subordinate. She is the arrogant E Model’s genetic match.

For much of her mature lifespan, she has desired the male, yearning for his dark-eyed gaze, craving his sure hands, longing for his respect.

That esteem was never granted. And Eirene Ours can no longer wait to earn it. There’s an external threat to their kind, a danger that might destroy them all.

Having lured Power to her home terrain, she now plans to use everything within her means — her fists, her daggers, her ship-destroying missiles — to pound that truth into her stubborn warrior’s thick metal skull.

The future of every cyborg is at stake. She can’t fail them.

Power will believe her. Or he will die.

***

Seizing Power is an enemies-to-lovers Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features an epic battle between two equally strong cyborg leaders, plans that go terribly yet passionately wrong, and a love that will shake the entire universe.

Needing Valor And Traits Valued By Cyborgs

By Cynthia Sax on January 18, 2022

I smiled when I wrote the scene where the other cyborgs are congratulating Valor on locating his female. They are SUCH warriors and view everything through a warrior’s gaze.

One of his brethren admires Halleli’s small horns, viewing them as natural weapons. Another warrior points out her skin color could serve as camouflage on some planets. Valor likes her full figure, processes she is built for a cyborg.

And when he meets with his female, he applauds her bravery. She might not be skilled with explosives or weapons but she is, in his gaze, a fellow warrior.

Seeking a change after solar cycles of war, Halleli enters a lottery on her home planet. Her wishes are granted. She wins a home of her own in the middle of nowhere.

The only problem is…that home is haunted.

Objects slide off horizontal surfaces. The floor howls. And the resident ghost, a sexy spirit she has named Chad, roams the space. He sports soulful dark eyes, a deep growly voice, and shiny silver hands big enough to handle a female’s abundant curves.

Halleli wants him, and that is wrong, so very wrong. A relationship between them is impossible. He is dead. And she is…not.

Valor isn’t dead. He isn’t a ghost. And his name isn’t Chad. He’s an E Model cyborg determined to claim his female…once he can convince her he’s alive.

Achieving that feat might require clever words, some heated kisses…and a whole lot of explosives.

Needing Valor And When Friends Find Love At The Same Time

By Cynthia Sax on December 20, 2021

Valor, the hero of Needing Valor, finds his female less than a solar cycle after Malice, his best friend, is paired up. Halleli, the heroine, finds love the same planet rotation her best friend uncovers the identity of her fated mate.

I’ve seen this happen here on Earth. Two best friends will find love around the same time. I have some theories about this—one being that once one friend finds love, the other friend looks harder for love OR can recognize what love truly is. Whatever the reason is, I HAVE witnessed this.

I also think it is more challenging to be truly, gloriously happy if we suspect our best friends might be lonely. And romance novels are all about that romantic happy ever after.

In the next cyborg series, three best friends – Strive, Grin and Raw – will find their very different females all in the same solar cycle. I can’t wait to tell their stories!

Needing Valor And Seeing Ghosts

By Cynthia Sax on December 15, 2021

In Needing Valor, Halleli, the heroine, believes her new home is haunted.

This doesn’t freak her out too, too much because she has spent the last few solar cycles fighting the Humanoid Alliance. War is bloody and random and noisy. Halleli saw things on the battlefield, horrible, nonsensical things. She doesn’t talk about it much during her story and I don’t share, in detail, the trauma she has endured, but it is there. It is part of her past.

A harmless ghost or two isn’t going to unsettle this heroine. (grins)

Needing Valor And The Management Of Mercury Minor

By Cynthia Sax on December 14, 2021

Power and the Cyborg Council manages activities and beings on the Cyborg Homeland.

On Mercury Minor, the Rebel Cyborgs’ home base, Ghost, Lethe and Cadet/Eirene Ours are that planet’s leaders.

Ghost and Lethe decide who lands on the planet. They manage security and the space around Mercury Minor. They also communicate…minimally…with cyborgs on the Homeland.

Cadet/Eirene Ours is responsible for the rescue missions and for interacting with beings situated on Mercury Minor. She ensures they have domiciles, supplies, medic bays, etc.

She doesn’t do this alone, of course. She has a team on the ground.

One of those team members is Lore. We meet him for the first time in Needing Valor. When Cadet/Eirene Ours is off planet, he is in charge.

We’ll see more of Lore in Seizing Power and, likely, in the future. I expect he will eventually have his own story. (grins) He’s a fascinating cyborg with a unique view of the universe.

Needing Valor And Adhafera Omicron

By Cynthia Sax on December 13, 2021

Much of the action on Needing Valor occurs on Adhafera Omicron, the heroine’s home planet.

Adhafera Omicron is named after Adhafera, the star.

Adhafera means the braid or curl in Arabic. This star is faint yet visible to the naked human eye here on Earth. Its faintness isn’t due to its brightness or size. Adhafera’s luminosity is 85 times that of our sun and it is also much larger (3 times its mass and 6 times its radius). It IS approximately 274 light-years away from us, however.

Adhafera is part of a double star. It isn’t a binary star as its companion star is 174 light-years away from it…which, I think, makes the nod to it perfect in a cyborg romance. (grins)

Needing Valor And Omicron

By Cynthia Sax on December 11, 2021

Halleli, the heroine of Needing Valor, lives on the planet Adhafera Omicron.

I wrote this story long before the Omicron variant appeared and I wasn’t paying attention to where we were in the naming sequence of the variants. I thought we were well past Omicron.

(head slap)

Yep, I made a mistake and I’m sorry if that has, in any way, interfered with your joy regarding this thank you story, my gift to you.

(Makes a note to research which numbering/lettering system scientists plan to use for variants after they’ve worked their way through Greek letters so I can avoid that same system for future planet names)

Needing Valor And A Certain Character’s Name

By Cynthia Sax on December 10, 2021

Reading buddies have been asking me if the newest member of the cyborg family has a name yet. This new cyborg is first mentioned in B Free. We find out at the end of Needing Valor that a certain event involving him has happened but there is no name attributed to him.

His name WILL be mentioned in Seizing Power (releasing in February). You can likely guess what it will be based on the cyborg preference of using names of fallen loved ones.

Why is there a delay in sharing his name?

Cyborgs value names and, often, they either choose their own or they give the suggested name their approval. That requires processing and a bit of time. They might wish to research the meanings of names and the histories of the beings who have utilized those names in the past.

When cyborgs do finally reveal their names, they share some of their private selves with the us and with the rest of the universe. That’s a huge step for beings who were once viewed as interchangeable machines. That process shouldn’t be rushed.

B Free And What We Leave Behind

By Cynthia Sax on December 7, 2021

Quinn, the heroine of B Free, is a researcher, a variation on an archeologist. She excavates the terrain inhabited by older civilizations, looking at what those beings left behind for clues as to how they lived.

While writing B Free, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what I’d leave behind. My stories might exist for a while. That would be wonderful. But I’d be pleased if my legacy was merely making a few reading buddies happy and maybe inspiring someone to write their own cyborg romances.

What would you like to leave behind?

B Free

B is the last remaining B Model cyborg. All of his brethren, the beings he trained with, fought with, cared deeply for, have perished.

Or so he believes.

When he intercepts a communication mentioning the existence of one of his kind, he has to investigate its source. The message could be a trap set by his enemies. He’ll take that risk if it secures him the companionship he requires to be fully functional.

What he finds is a daring brown-eyed female who activates all his systems. She proudly proclaims she’s a researcher, brandishing that information like a weapon before her. He wants to kiss the sass off her beautiful face, protect her from the dangers around them, claim her forever.

Quinn is on a quest to locate the mechanics of an early-version cyborg. She believes the information captured within that frame will give her valuable insights into the past.

When her mission goes zombie-like beings levels of wrong, she comes face-to-face with a living, breathing B Model. He has big hands, a primitive countenance, and stern hard lips crafted for kissing.

She doesn’t trust him. And she doesn’t have time to indulge her desires.

Their shared enemies are chasing them, would kill to get their precious specimens back. One minor mistake could reduce B and Quinn to a mere line in the databases of history.

More Containers

By Cynthia Sax on December 6, 2021

These containers, displayed in the Altos de Chavon Regional Museum of Archaeology in La Romana, Dominican Republic, were likely brought to the area on ships from Spain.

I think Quinn, the heroine from B Free, would love them. She couldn’t read them as they aren’t metal but she’d find them interesting.

I loved the color of this container. It was large. I would have to use both arms to hold it.

This container was much smaller…is the size of a large beer stein. I could envision the cyborgs drinking fermented beverage out of it.

This container is about the same size as the first one. I liked the warping of it.
