Talking Cyborgs And SciFi Romance

By Cynthia Sax on April 28, 2017

I’ve been interviewed on Nice Girls Writing Naughty!

http://ngwngroup.com/2017/04/28/a-to-z-challenge-x-is-for-cynthia-sax/

Here’s a snippet…

You explore the boundaries of space and society in your books—cyborgs, space travel, even cannibalism in your latest release. Why do you write sci-fi romance—what is it about this subgenre that makes it fascinating for you?

Cynthia Sax: The ‘what-if’s of SciFi Romance really appeal to me. What if we created half human, half machine beings to fight our wars? How would our society, our world as we know it, change? Would we consider these manufactured beings to be humans or weapons? If they’re considered to be weapons, would we allow them to make their own decisions, to fall in love, to have babies, or would we seek to control all of that?

The core of my stories is the romance and characters you and I can relate to. They might be living in a futuristic world but they want the same things we do—to be free, to be loved.

Interview With TL Reeve

By Cynthia Sax on April 25, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with TL Reeve for a short interview. Today is the release day for TL Reeve’s Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne! Yes, CYBORGS and this is a menage. I don’t really have to say more than that. (grins)

Cynthia Sax: The entire premise of Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne is awesome but what did you find especially thrilling?

TL Reeve: I think what drew me to the story was that, it was different. Sometimes, every story has the same plot. Boy meets girl (or boy) they fall in love throw in some strife and then happy ending. But, with Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne, I could tell it from a different angle. I knew the ending before I wrote the book. Saw it and Lincoln clear as day. So, I knew filling it in would be the fun part. (FYI: Plot twist, but you have to figure it out.)

Cynthia Sax: I do love plot twists! What is your favorite line from Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne?

TL Reeve: “As you wish, temptress.” It’s my favorite line, because throughout the story, Conner would do anything for Flora, and I think this represents their relationship quite well.

Cynthia Sax: Awww… that’s sweet. Where did you get the idea for Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne?

TL Reeve: It’s a submission call for my publisher, and when I stared at the prompt for a minute, Lincoln (my cyborg) jumped into my mind first. I saw him at a bar, drinking, and people watching. He whispered (to me of course) I want to feel human for a night, can you help me? So, I built the story around him, but not just around him. Then when I gave him two humans. It kind of took off from there. However the ending really complements the book. (And you’ll never see it coming.)

Cynthia Sax: (grins) You’re such a tease. How does Sex, Cyborgs, and Champagne start?

TL Reeve:
The story opens as a married couple Conner and Flora Mann, are ready to start their swinger cruise near the tropical islands of the planet Vega. It’s their anniversary and they’re doing the one thing Flora has always wanted to do. Be shared. As they’re standing on the small transport ship waiting to dock, you get a glimpse of how prim and proper Flora really is.

Cynthia Sax: This sounds so intriguing. Thank you for joining us today, TL Reeve!

TL Reeve’s Website: http://www.tlreeves.com

*****************************************************************************

We can help with that.

Conner Mann is on a mission. For his tenth anniversary, he wants to give his wife, Flora, a present she’ll never forget. When he sees an ad for Vega Space Vacations, he knows exactly what to do.

Flora Mann, grew up in a strict home with conservative parents. Expressing her sexual desires never came easy to her due to her prim upbringing, and because of it, she’d never been able to tell her husband what she wants most—a threesome.

Vincent Carver is the man with the plan.

Unit L-2817 or Lincoln to his friends, is ready to experience life through human eyes. As a reformed government mercenary, he’s free to finally experience everything others take for granted—including creating emotional connections. He isn’t sure what love is, but the instant attraction he feels between Conner and Flora, can’t be denied.

Their emotions run high as they contemplate their next moves. Can a cyborg assimilate to their hectic routine? Conner, Flora and Lincoln, are willing to find out. But, what if all they are left with are distant memories?

Ghost Of A Machine – Second Scene

By Cynthia Sax on April 24, 2017

Ghost Of A Machine will be releasing on May 16th (it is available for pre-order now!).

I’ve been sharing scenes from the first chapter.

You can read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/04/17/ghost-of-a-machine-first-scene/

This is the second scene.

***

Ghost stared at the wall and listened to the chatter in his head, the discussions of battle strategy, the musings about females and the Homeland.

The warship tilted to the right. He widened his stance, bracing himself. The floor under his bare feet leveled.

The vessel jerked, steadied, jerked again.

Were they in a battle? Ghost breathed deeply, smelling nothing, no blood, no projectile residue. No one gave him orders to attack, to kill.

He wanted to end lifespans. That was his one remaining function in the universe. Ghost remembered having another purpose, a more worthy purpose. He couldn’t recall what that was. All he knew now was death, pain, violence.

Ghost.

He straightened and growled. One of the voices inside his skull knew his name.

Ghost, are you functional? Another voice asked.

That question held the strength of an order. He had to respond. Ghost searched his organic brain for the words. It had been solar cycles since he’d last spoken. Ugh. That was all he could manage.

He’s damaged.

He might be too damaged to assist us.

Assist, Ghost repeated. If the task required action, not talking, he could complete it.

There was a stretch of silence.

He’d failed the voices as he’d failed…he couldn’t remember who he had failed. Ghost’s shoulders slumped. He stared at the wall, waiting for a command.

Ghost, we need your help. The first voice returned.

Ghost lifted his head. Ugh. He’d help them.

Open your holding chamber, warrior.

Ghost glanced at the doors. They were closed. His gaze shifted to the control panel to the right. He placed his hands on the flat surface, ashamed of how dirty, how unkempt his fingers were.

Nothing happened.

The power to open the doors was within him. He was certain of that. Ghost narrowed his eyes at the control panel and concentrated.

The doors remained closed.

Ghost, I have to hack into your machine. The voice stated an intention. Do I have your consent?

Machine. That was the piece of him that was missing. He’d shut that part down. There was a reason he did that, though he couldn’t remember what that reason was.

Ugh. He tried to communicate his misgivings to the voice.

The voice didn’t listen to him. His processors were poked and prodded.

They whirred, reviving. A tingling spread over him, pricks of pain, as though pins and needles were being stuck into his skin. His body tried to resist the invasion.

The voice, Ghost could now identify him as Ace, was too strong. The K Model cyborg deftly reconnected Ghost’s processors, undoing the separation it had taken the C Model almost a solar cycle to fully accomplish.

Dark Thoughts And Regency Dukes

By Cynthia Sax on April 19, 2017

I’m talking about Dark Thoughts, Heroes Who EAT Their Enemies, Ral From Laurann Dohner’s Ral’s Woman, and Regency Dukes at Kayelle Allen’s online home today.

https://romancelivesforever.blogspot.ca/2017/04/cynthia-sax.html

Here’s a snippet…

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m writing the follow up story to Dark Thoughts (releasing in July). The hero will be Orol, Kralj’s winged second-in-command. He has been given a solo mission. His heroine, of course, isn’t cooperating with that mission. (grins) It is never easy for our heroes, is it?

Can love redeem a monster?

The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. Kralj, its leader, reigns over the remote outpost with terrifying ease, ruthlessly squashing any rumors of rebellion, killing anyone who breaks his rules. Primitive, deadly, powerful, he’s a monster, scarred both on his face and his soul. He has never met a being he couldn’t control.

Until he meets her.

Dita has one mission—to kill the three targets claiming sanctuary within the Refuge. Or so she claims. For the first time in his long lifespan, Kralj isn’t certain of another being’s intentions. The tiny assassin is immune to his powers, her thoughts unreadable. He can’t predict her movements, can’t control her, can’t stop wanting her.

Dita is rare, as unique as he is, and, to keep the residents of the Refuge safe, Kralj will have to kill her. But first, he’ll touch her, taste her, show her how passionate the beast inside him can be.

Dark Thoughts is a STAND-ALONE SciFi Romance.
The hero might be tall, dark, and scarred but don’t be fooled by his appearance.
He’s truly a monster.
This story is not for readers with delicate sensibilities.

Ghost Of A Machine – First Scene

By Cynthia Sax on April 17, 2017

Ghost Of A Machine will be releasing on May 16th (it is available for pre-order now!).

Over the next four weeks, I’ll be sharing the first chapter of Ghost Of A Machine. Don’t be alarmed if you find much of the action to be familiar to you. You should. It also occurred in Hers To Command. Once you’ve read the chapter, you’ll understand why it is so important to retell the scene from Ghost’s perspective.

This is the first scene.

***

Chapter One

Ghost stared at the far wall of his holding chamber, trying to ignore the two puny human males chattering in front of him.

“You’d think they’d design cyborgs to talk.” The smallest male gazed up at him.

“They don’t talk.” The other male nicked Ghost in the hip with a dagger. “Not unless they’re asked a question or acknowledging a command. This one is damaged. It doesn’t even do that.”

Ghost, accustomed to their torture, didn’t react. Blood dripped down his leg.

“The silence is eerie.” The smallest male’s lips twisted. “Remember when Rog stuck that dagger up its ass and sliced it to pieces? It didn’t make a sound.”

He said that as though it was a fond memory. The two of them enjoyed hurting beings, hurting him.

Hatred, pure and thick, pulsed through Ghost’s circuits. If given the command, he’d rip their heads off.

But he wouldn’t be given that command. The humans were his masters and although he didn’t know much, his organic brain shattered, he did know he couldn’t act without their orders.

“The Captain was pissed when Rog did that.” The other male dragged a dagger over Ghost’s bare ass, leaving a trail of pain. “He likes it tight when he uses it.”

Ghost’s fury expanded, encompassing every being on the warship. He wanted to kill them all, tear them apart limb by limb.

Instead, he gazed at the gray wall panels, his expression blank, his lips pressed together. The two males’ voices weren’t the only sounds he heard. Millions of beings talked inside his reinforced skull.

What’s the quickest way to kill a Mantidae?

In the Homeland, every cyborg is free.

I increased my kill rate by thirty-two this planet rotation.

Some females have golden hair.

Fe-males. Ghost silently turned that word over in his mind. Fe-males. That meant something to him, invoked emotions within his soul. He didn’t know why it was important but it was.

“We’ll have to clean it up after the battle.” The shorter male wrinkled his nose. “The captain doesn’t like it to be dirty.”

“C Models are disgusting.” The other male curled his top lip. “The newer models have been programmed to utilize the cleaning cloths.”

“This one used to do that. It is malfunctioning.”

“Why doesn’t the captain have it decommissioned and order a new one?”

Decommissioned was another word Ghost still retained. It meant pain, death.

The end of his suffering.

“There’s been an issue with supply. For now, we’re stuck with it.” The shorter male inclined his head toward Ghost. “There are benefits. I doubt the captain would allow us to use a new model for target practice.”

“True.” The taller male moved toward the doors. “I’m itching to test my new long gun. Downing the rebel battle station should earn us that reward.”

“Their commander is a female.” The other male sneered. “Defeating her will take mere moments.”

They exited, the doors shut behind them, and Ghost was left in solitude yet again. He had a vague recollection of a time when he wasn’t alone, a time when he had been surrounded by warriors like himself.

A scene flashed through his mind. A battlefield strewn with bodies, gouged faces, silver frames showing through tattered flesh, eyes with their lights burned out.

Pain surged along his circuits, coiling around his heart, squeezing, squeezing. Ghost hastily deleted the image and focused on the present, on the gray walls, the tiled floor.

There was a space inside him, as though something was missing. A part of himself had been severed. He gazed down. His arms and legs remained attached. He balled his fingers into huge fists. Physically, he appeared to be all there.

Yet the sensation remained. He wasn’t whole. He was defective.

Writing – This Is YOUR Career

By Cynthia Sax on April 14, 2017

“I don’t like giving out ARCs.”

“I don’t like attending conferences.”

“I don’t like putting keywords in titles.”

“I don’t like man titty on covers.”

“I don’t like giving away books.”

Then don’t do it. Yes, it is THAT simple.

It won’t be the end of your career. Hey, it might even be good for your career. Why? Because you will be happier, care more, perhaps write more. Readers can sense that.

“But-but-but I HAVE to do it.”

No, you don’t. I don’t know one thing, outside of actually getting books written, that is essential for a writer’s success.

Sure, it helps if you have a half decent cover (i.e. a cover readers don’t wince at when they see it) but I know writers who have dreadful covers and they have found readers who don’t give a shit about that. Sure, spellchecking a story before it is published seems like a necessity but I know writers who have books filled with spelling errors and they have readers. These readers might be challenging to find but they are out there.

There are no rules. None. If you don’t like something, ask yourself why you are doing it. If it is because you think every other writer is doing it, I can assure you they aren’t.

In some ways, this makes this wonderful career more challenging. There’s no blindly following the crowd, allowing others to make our decisions for us. Everything is a decision. But there’s a reward for that additional work. We can craft the career we truly want.

The flipside of this is… we don’t get to dictate what other writers do with their careers either. If Writer X wants to give away all of her stories for free, she can. If Writer Y wants to put every keyword she knows into her titles, she can. There are no rules.

Craft the career you wish. Enjoy this wonderful experience.

Ghost Of A Machine – The Significance Of The Title

By Cynthia Sax on April 12, 2017

The dual-meaning word/phrase lover in me couldn’t resist titling Ghost’s story Ghost Of A Machine. The name our C Model cyborg gave himself was Ghost (I’ll talk about why he called himself this in a future blog post) and he IS half machine.

He is, also, a ghost of himself, of the cyborg he once was. Ghost has been so severely damaged; he is barely functional. He has been isolated from his brethren both physically and emotionally. He has lost touch with the machine part of him.

In addition to this, Ghost Of A Machine, as a title, is a nod to ‘Ghost In The Machine,’ a term used in philosophy. It refers to the belief that the mind is a nonphysical presence within the framework of the body. Our thoughts aren’t merely the result of neural processes, the physical activity of our brains. They come from something greater, something spiritual, a ‘ghost’ residing inside us.

That applies to Ghost’s situation. He has spent his entire lifespan protecting the females who belong to his cyborg brethren. He knows how he detects that these females are special. Their scents and their voices are ‘right.’ But he doesn’t know why they are ‘right.’ His machine half, his more logical side can’t explain that. It is as though this knowledge comes from outside his physical systems.

Interview With Veronica Scott

By Cynthia Sax on April 10, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Veronica Scott for a short interview. Veronica Scott’s latest release, Danger in the Stars, is part of her delicious Sectors SF Romance Series!

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Danger in the Stars?

Veronica Scott: When I was writing Star Cruise: Stowaway for the ‘Pets In Space’ anthology last year, I had the premise of an empathic alien priestess stolen from her own world and held captive by an interstellar crime syndicate to do their bidding. In that novella, the story was about the woman’s escape with the help of my ship’s crew and two pets. When I finished writing that one, I realized I had a lot more story to tell on the general theme, and so I started thinking about a sister, also held as a prisoner, but not lucky enough to escape. How would it be for her, to be in the midst of the criminal operations, trying to stay true to her own values, but forced to commit crimes? Who would help her? And then of course Conor, the hero, came into my head and said, “I will.” He’s a man of many secrets, by the way, but no spoilers from me!

Cynthia Sax: You had me at secrets. (grins) How does Danger in the Stars start?

Veronica Scott: Miriell and her mob controller have just arrived on a new planet, sent to help the mob boss there with a specific target. Miriell is ill from the cryo sleep and her handler is impatient, anxious to make a good impression on the people who hired them, so he’s rough with her. Conor is there, to oversee things for his own boss and right away Miriell is attracted to him, feels safe around him, even though she knows that’s crazy – why would a high ranking mob enforcer help her? But when she looks at him with her empathic power she sees an intriguing hint of the pure blue that signifies a warrior, hidden deep in his soul, but marking him as one to be trusted. So right from the beginning I’ve set up the conflict where she knows she can’t trust anyone in this place, yet instinctively she wants to lean on Conor. Will he help her? Can he help her? Or is he a dangerous weakness in her self-protective stance? And the story takes off from there.

Cynthia Sax: Mmm… I love warrior heroes! Tell us a little bit about the series Danger in the Stars belongs to and the order we should read the stories.

Veronica Scott: This story fits into my Sectors series, which is set in the far future, out in the galaxy. Most of the books in the Sectors SF Romance series are standalone adventures with romance and an HEA, although occasionally I write a direct sequel. I’m already thinking about a third empathic priestess, and her story, so I may write one more in this general set of plots. Never say never! I have a page on my blog where I give suggestions on what order to read the Sectors books, to the extent that it’s helpful to read any of them before reading others.

Cynthia Sax: That’s awesome. What do you love about writing in your SciFi Romance?

Veronica Scott:
In science fiction literally anything can happen (and often does). So the author isn’t constrained by anything but their own imagination. And I love the idea of a hero and equally strong heroine up against the worst the galaxy can throw at them, and fighting through to that Happy Ever After ending.

Cynthia Sax: I love that too. Thank you for joining us today, Veronica Scott!

Miriell, a powerful empathic priestess, has been kidnapped from her own primitive planet along with a number of her people, and sold to the evil Amarotu Combine, largest organized crime syndicate in the Sectors. When she and her handler are sent to use her power to commit an assassination, she must leave behind her own sister as hostage to ensure her compliance. Miriell cannot ask for aid without endangering herself and others.

Despite his best efforts, Combine enforcer Conor Stewart is entranced by Miriell, and helps her evade the worst of brutal treatment from the rest of the mob. But Conor must keep his distance, before the lovely empath learns that he has secrets of his own–secrets that could get them both killed.

The situation becomes dire when Conor and Miriell come to the attention of both the Combine overlords and the deadly Mawreg, aliens who threaten the Sectors. Can she save herself and the Mawreg’s next victims? And will Conor help her, or remain loyal to his evil bosses?

Why I Read SciFi Romance

By Cynthia Sax on April 6, 2017

I’m talking about why I love SciFi Romance at Imogene Nix’s online home!

http://www.imogenenix.net/the-blog/have-you-considered-trying-why-you-should-try-new-romance-genres

Here’s a snippet…

“Then there’s the blowing up of spaceships and planets. Nothing is more relaxing after a long stressful day than fictional destruction. (grins) I can’t think of another subgenre that allows a reader to experience a planet being blasted to bits. A hero killing a baddie is satisfying. Sure. A hero killing and EATING his enemies (as Kralj does in Dark Thoughts) is glorious.”
