UFOs And Other News

By Cynthia Sax on February 15, 2023

Strange objects have been blasted out of the skies all around the world recently.

Were they UFOs?

Yes. Absolutely. They were definitely Unidentified Flying Objects (at least, initially).

Were they from another planet?

THAT is unknown to the general public at this time. A couple years ago, while many of us were distracted by the (ongoing) pandemic, the US Government admitted to having detected alien visits. And there is NO doubt in my mind life exists on other planets.

The UFOs COULD have come from space.

If I wanted to determine if the inhabitants of another planet were peaceful or not, I would send down a highly visible crew-less disposable ‘probe’ (grins) and then watch what the locals did with that probe.

Or the UFOs could have originated from THIS planet. (shrugs) We don’t know…yet.

Raw Desires

His human female is attempting to kill him.
This cyborg finds that adorable.

Raw, a K model cyborg, is one of the lucky warriors who has located his genetic match. He hears his human female’s voice over the communication lines and immediately processes she is his.

Winning her affections will be a greater challenge. Battle has always been Raw’s focus. The rough-and-tough warrior has no idea how to engage anyone’s tender emotions.

Fortunately, he isn’t alone in the universe. His unmatched male friends help him craft a plan.

All Raw has to do is relay a few unsettlingly sweet words to his female and give her the thoroughly unfunctional wall decoration he has obtained. He projects she will then jump into his big, strong arms and beg him to claim her.

Taytu isn’t jumping anywhere. She has one mission—kill every cyborg in existence.

The huge, handsome male traveling to meet with her is her first target. His rough hands, firm lips, and sparkling, energy-infused eyes won’t save him from her vengeance. She has trained vigorously for this moment, and she won’t fail at her assigned task.

The cyborg will die.

Raw Desires is an enemies-to-lovers Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

First Space Books

By Cynthia Sax on February 28, 2022

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I recently stopped by Alien Fresh Jerky in Baker, California, and we saw this wonderful display of books to start little ones on their space adventures.

We had very few space-themed books when I was a child. I’m excited that children now have a selection of books to choose from, both fiction and non-fiction. And some of the books have female main characters. Woot!

Seizing Power

This cyborg believes he’s in control.

Power is the self-appointed leader of the cyborg council. Other members might debate situations. He makes the ultimate decisions.

When a threat to Homeland is revealed, he takes command of a fleet and ventures to the edge of cyborg-controlled space to investigate. He finds a rebellion led by a mysterious upstart he calls Cadet.

The plan Power derives is simple—he’ll quickly quash the uprising and teach its leader a lesson the warrior will never forget.

NO ONE challenges his authority.

Eirene Ours might be called a cadet by Power but she is NOT his subordinate. She is the arrogant E Model’s genetic match.

For much of her mature lifespan, she has desired the male, yearning for his dark-eyed gaze, craving his sure hands, longing for his respect.

That esteem was never granted. And Eirene Ours can no longer wait to earn it. There’s an external threat to their kind, a danger that might destroy them all.

Having lured Power to her home terrain, she now plans to use everything within her means — her fists, her daggers, her ship-destroying missiles — to pound that truth into her stubborn warrior’s thick metal skull.

The future of every cyborg is at stake. She can’t fail them.

Power will believe her. Or he will die.

Seizing Power is an enemies-to-lovers Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features an epic battle between two equally strong cyborg leaders, plans that go terribly yet passionately wrong, and a love that will shake the entire universe.

Baring Grudge And Silans

By Cynthia Sax on July 30, 2021

Kutta, a Silan retriever female, plays a significant role in Baring Grudge. She is a warrior and that is obvious to anyone familiar with beings from Sila.

The roles Silans play in their society are determined at birth. They are genetically designed to be experts in certain tasks. Their coloring is an indication of which role they will play.

Kutta is a warrior. Her body ridges are green with black highlights.

A fixer or repair being (this includes medics) would have green and blue body ridges. A breaker or tester would have green and red body ridges. A ruler or leader would have body ridges that are two different shades of green.

Silans are humanoids. They have fated mates, beings they are destined to be with. Their mating is quite rough and involves biting. (They have pointed teeth and their skin is quite thick.) They’re a fascinating species and we will likely hear more about them in the future.

Baring Grudge

No one in the universe is more determined than a cyborg warrior tracking his female.

***

Grudge, a C Model cyborg, has been assigned a mission – safeguard a Humanoid Alliance space station for his kind. Honor was once all he had, and he is determined to fulfill his duty.

That resolve is tested when a tiny human female enters the space station and sets the prettiest little explosives the warrior has ever seen. She is Grudge’s genetic match, the one being manufactured for him. He wants to touch her, kiss her, claim her in all ways, but first he has to stop her from blasting him into the next galaxy.

Taelyn has a self-appointed mission—to destroy every battle robot the Humanoid Alliance has ever manufactured. A huge gray-skinned, blue-eyed cyborg warrior with mismatched arms won’t prevent her from achieving her goal. She’ll escape him, leaving destruction in her wake.

Before she departs, she’ll experience one toe-curling moment of hatred-edged passion with her handsome foe. She’ll show him how skilled with detonations she truly is. He will have his universe rocked.

Then she’ll disappear.

Her cyborg, however, has no intention of ever letting her go.

Baring Grudge is a STANDALONE Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features a determined, damaged warrior, an equally resolute human female, and an explosive game of predator and prey played across galaxies.

Vivarium And Aliens Thinking Like Aliens

By Cynthia Sax on July 15, 2020

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Vivarium on the weekend.

This movie has romantic elements but it is NOT a Romance. Don’t expect a Romance ending.

It is also a SciFi Fantasy. The world and premise have HUGE plot holes in it. They are intriguing but they make no d@mn sense.

For example, there is a huge amount of effort expended for very little payback and I’m almost certain aliens with that amount of power could design a more efficient means of achieving the same results.

If you plan to watch this movie, put logic aside and simply enjoy it.

Because it IS an enjoyable movie. The world is fresh and interesting and it sparked my muse.

Most alien movies feature an alien species that looks excitingly different but thinks very similarly to humans. One of the things I loved about Vivarium is…they flip this. The aliens in it look similar to humans yet they THINK very differently.

And it isn’t due to culture as it is with the aliens in many of my stories. The BRAINS of the aliens in Vivarium are different. They can’t dream, as one example, and it was implied they don’t have the capacity for imagination or creative thought.

Imagine not being able to imagine. Yeah, that freaked me out a bit. Because much of what we do every day is based on creative thought. That’s how we tackle problems we face for the first time.

And sleep for these aliens must be endless darkness. I LOVE dreaming. That is one of the many enjoyable parts of my day…or night. (grins) Dreaming is like watching a movie that has been especially filmed for me.

I am unlikely to craft an alien hero/heroine who has a different type of brain. Why? Because I adhere to Common Ancestor Theory with my humanoid aliens. That proposes that all humanoids and humans come from one common ancestor, which is why my aliens can make babies with my humans. Their genes are extremely similar. That means their brains would be extremely similar also.

But for writing buddies who don’t adhere to Common Ancestor Theory, messing around with the brains of aliens can be an awesome variation in your worlds. It would cast ripples across every facet of your societies and make them excitingly different.

Other Chameles view him as the enemy.

She sees the warrior hero he never believed he could be.

* * *

Tolui is a Warlord in search of a planet to rule. He has been leading his fellow clones in a stealth battle, fighting for both control of the Chamele sector and the right to exist. The brave warriors he commands warrant respect, and they deserve the best.

That best isn’t the barren, dangerous terrain on Chamele 4. When Tolui crashes on that planet’s surface, he’s determined to leave it as soon as possible. The tiny human female rescuing him might be as beautiful and as wild as the land she inhabits, but her flowing words, trusting gaze, and enthralling submission won’t stop him from rejoining the war.

After many solar cycles of living alone, Lea is overjoyed when a tall, scarred, muscular warrior falls from the sky. Her savage stranger is strong and severe, and he makes her feel safe, an emotion she hasn’t experienced in a long, long time.

He also insists they must part. Before they do, she’ll show him the splendor of her home, and she’ll enjoy his big form, collecting passionate moments she can revisit when she’s solitary once more.

Every additional moment Lea and Tolui spend together increases the chance they’ll both die. Lea is being chased by female-hating fiends. Tolui is being hunted by the best bounty hunters in the universe. War will soon arrive on their threshold, and the blood spilled might be their own.

Talking Aliens, Cyborgs and Mardi Gras at SFR Brigade

By Cynthia Sax on March 5, 2019

I’m at the SFR Brigade today, talking about aliens, cyborgs and Mardi Gras.

Here’s a snippet…

“Aliens can be themselves in New Orleans today. Their blue skin or antennas or extra body parts will be assumed to be part of their costumes. A ship might be viewed as a float, an elaborate prop. As Mardi Gras in New Orleans attracts humans from all over the world, the aliens can speak their home planet’s language and not be noticed.”

Choosing Chuckles

A Cynical Cyborg Meets A Bad, Bad Female.

Chuckles hates all humans. In the past, humans betrayed him. That treachery caused permanent damage to his muscular form, resulting in a lifespan of pain.

Interview With Veronica Scott

By Cynthia Sax on April 10, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Veronica Scott for a short interview. Veronica Scott’s latest release, Danger in the Stars, is part of her delicious Sectors SF Romance Series!

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Danger in the Stars?

Veronica Scott: When I was writing Star Cruise: Stowaway for the ‘Pets In Space’ anthology last year, I had the premise of an empathic alien priestess stolen from her own world and held captive by an interstellar crime syndicate to do their bidding. In that novella, the story was about the woman’s escape with the help of my ship’s crew and two pets. When I finished writing that one, I realized I had a lot more story to tell on the general theme, and so I started thinking about a sister, also held as a prisoner, but not lucky enough to escape. How would it be for her, to be in the midst of the criminal operations, trying to stay true to her own values, but forced to commit crimes? Who would help her? And then of course Conor, the hero, came into my head and said, “I will.” He’s a man of many secrets, by the way, but no spoilers from me!

Cynthia Sax: You had me at secrets. (grins) How does Danger in the Stars start?

Veronica Scott: Miriell and her mob controller have just arrived on a new planet, sent to help the mob boss there with a specific target. Miriell is ill from the cryo sleep and her handler is impatient, anxious to make a good impression on the people who hired them, so he’s rough with her. Conor is there, to oversee things for his own boss and right away Miriell is attracted to him, feels safe around him, even though she knows that’s crazy – why would a high ranking mob enforcer help her? But when she looks at him with her empathic power she sees an intriguing hint of the pure blue that signifies a warrior, hidden deep in his soul, but marking him as one to be trusted. So right from the beginning I’ve set up the conflict where she knows she can’t trust anyone in this place, yet instinctively she wants to lean on Conor. Will he help her? Can he help her? Or is he a dangerous weakness in her self-protective stance? And the story takes off from there.

Cynthia Sax: Mmm… I love warrior heroes! Tell us a little bit about the series Danger in the Stars belongs to and the order we should read the stories.

Veronica Scott: This story fits into my Sectors series, which is set in the far future, out in the galaxy. Most of the books in the Sectors SF Romance series are standalone adventures with romance and an HEA, although occasionally I write a direct sequel. I’m already thinking about a third empathic priestess, and her story, so I may write one more in this general set of plots. Never say never! I have a page on my blog where I give suggestions on what order to read the Sectors books, to the extent that it’s helpful to read any of them before reading others.

Cynthia Sax: That’s awesome. What do you love about writing in your SciFi Romance?

Veronica Scott:
In science fiction literally anything can happen (and often does). So the author isn’t constrained by anything but their own imagination. And I love the idea of a hero and equally strong heroine up against the worst the galaxy can throw at them, and fighting through to that Happy Ever After ending.

Cynthia Sax: I love that too. Thank you for joining us today, Veronica Scott!

Miriell, a powerful empathic priestess, has been kidnapped from her own primitive planet along with a number of her people, and sold to the evil Amarotu Combine, largest organized crime syndicate in the Sectors. When she and her handler are sent to use her power to commit an assassination, she must leave behind her own sister as hostage to ensure her compliance. Miriell cannot ask for aid without endangering herself and others.

Despite his best efforts, Combine enforcer Conor Stewart is entranced by Miriell, and helps her evade the worst of brutal treatment from the rest of the mob. But Conor must keep his distance, before the lovely empath learns that he has secrets of his own–secrets that could get them both killed.

The situation becomes dire when Conor and Miriell come to the attention of both the Combine overlords and the deadly Mawreg, aliens who threaten the Sectors. Can she save herself and the Mawreg’s next victims? And will Conor help her, or remain loyal to his evil bosses?

Interview With Naomi Lucas

By Cynthia Sax on March 9, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Naomi Lucas for a short interview. Naomi Lucas’ latest release, Star Navigator, is a SciFi Romance with a cyborg hero and is the third standalone book in the Stranded in the Stars series.

Cynthia Sax: What makes Atlas sexy?

Naomi Lucas: Atlas: Adjustable Thickness Length and Size. I love my character Atlas, he has a lot of snark but he’s still a badass Cyborg soldier. I consider him my Frankenstein’s monster in space. What’s great about him is that he’s this killing machine that currently doesn’t have a body, as he was shot down many years before during the Great War so now he’s just a sentient intelligence. And boy does he know how to use his voice to get a girl off! Does he get his body back? I don’t know…you’ll have to read it and find out!

Cynthia Sax: Where is Star Navigator set?

Naomi Lucas: The story is set far in the future several generations after a disastrous galactic war between an alien species the Trentians and us, the Earthians. Tensions are still high although there is a truce. This particular story is about a woman who is given a deadly mission to discover why hundreds of ships have vanished after they have left the network’s reach. She is the last attempt for the Earthian Council to figure out what is happening. Her only crew-mate is Atlas, the acerbic, deadly Cyborg and they are stuck in close quarters for a long time. They have to learn to trust each other as they face many of the deadly aspects of space. Illness, corruption, pirates, and aliens.

Cynthia Sax: What creates problems between Reina and Atlas?

Naomi Lucas: They start off not trusting each other regardless of each other’s’ reputation. Reina has dealt with harassment her whole career in the Space Fleet as being one of the only woman in her field. She has walls built around herself to protect her but she lets them break down because she finds Atlas as a being who can’t physically hurt or take advantage of her. Atlas, on the other hand, has plans of taking control of the ship, taking control of his body, and taking control of Reina. Cyborgs=Control. This is all happening between them as they make their way out to dead space and the possibility of impending death.

Cynthia Sax: Is Star Navigator a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Naomi Lucas:
This is the third standalone book in this series. Each book is connected but can be read alone and can start from anywhere. I try to write my books in a way that if someone starts on book two, let’s say, it will make them want to read book one and three. I don’t like answering any questions that are beyond my character’s scopes. I find the answers to many of the ‘biggest’ questions take an entire story to explain. I plan on writing five books for Stranded in the Stars, with the last one featuring Larik. But I plan on writing off-shoot series for my aliens and cyborgs. Truthfully, it’s hard to say, I have so many stories in my head and outlined that I might veer off now and again and write something random.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you for joining us today, Naomi Lucas!

Naomi Lucas’s Website: https://naomilucasauthor.com/

*****************************************************************************

Reina stopped caring, and she doesn’t know why.

After years of working for the Earthian Space Fleet, spending her days in quiet anticipation as a back-up pilot, doing her work well, if indifferently, she comes face-to-face with an alien warrior who tries to bargain away her free will and make her his own. Furious and unsure whether she should fight for a life when she was just going through the motions, Reina is approached by her superiors and asked to captain the last mission into the abyss, drastically altering the course of her life.

What does a Cyborg do when he has the power of the entire network? When his actions could alter the course of the universe? And his only obstacle is a woman in desperate need of his help?

Atlas is consumed with rage.

He is the best navigator for The Earthian Council and has been working for them for decades in hopes that they will free him. But when the Council forces his hand, the now sentient intelligence must undertake a mission that could irrevocably destroy his conscious mind. A mission that could force him to transcend his half-life state in order to protect the beautiful, lost captain that he would risk a second-death to claim; and to feel under his fingertips.

Interview With Christine d’Abo

By Cynthia Sax on February 17, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Christine d’Abo for a short interview. Christine d’Abo’s upcoming release (available for pre-order NOW) is The Bond That Ties Us, an absolutely yummy SciFi Romance.

I devoured this story. The Bond That Ties Us will definitely make SciFi Romance Readers happy, especially if you love the sexy times and super hot alien males! The entire series is wonderful.

Cynthia Sax: What is super special about The Bond That Ties Us?

Christine d’Abo: There are so many things that makes this book special for me. This was THE book for me, when it came to what being an author meant to me. This was the first one that the whole writing thing clicked. I had a fun idea, strong characters, but I also learned more about craft writing this book than I’d ever had before.

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for The Bond That Ties Us?

Christine d’Abo: This will sound weird, but I’d gotten this idea from a reoccurring dream I’d been having. I kept seeing a man struggling and a woman knowing that she had to help him. He was a complete stranger to her, but she had this compulsion to help. From that thread the whole idea of the Briel people and their need to mate with only one person, grew.

Cynthia Sax: That doesn’t sound at all weird to me. For me, writing is very much like dreaming. The story comes from my brain but I don’t have any control over it.

Where is The Bond That Ties Us set?

Christine d’Abo: I set this story on a planet named Eurus. I wanted it to be far away from Earth, mostly so the society had to rely on their own people, on the others who will drift in and out of their lives. For me, it provided the opportunity to have a rich playground for these characters where anything could happen. Aliens, monsters, ghosts, anything can happen. But most importantly, these people are able to find love.

Cynthia Sax: I do love the monsters (thinks of Kralj from Dark Thoughts and smiles). What do you love about writing in SciFi Romance?

Christine d’Abo:
My first love has always been science fiction. As a kid I watched every sci-fi show or movie I could get my hands on. Doctor Who, Star Trek, Space 1999…all of them. When I eventually found the world of romance and subsequently, romantic sci-fi, I knew I’d finally found my joy. Being able to write these stories, to create new worlds while having my characters also find love, is the best job in the world.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you for joining us today, Christine!

Christine d’Abo’s Website: http:/www.christinedabo.com

*****************************************************************************

Haylie knows her life is about to change the moment she sets foot on the Eurus colony. What she didn’t count on was her instant, overwhelming sexual desire for the seven-foot-tall, sexy as hell alien ambassador. He’s in her every thought and dream, teasing and taunting her body into a sexual frenzy.

Kamran has waited his whole life to find his bonded mate. When she arrives in the form of a slender human with brilliant eyes, he can’t stop his all-consuming need to possess her. If their bond is discovered, they will be forced by Briel law to leave the colony, giving up the lives they’ve worked so hard to build. While Haylie and Kamran fight their growing desire, their colony is threatened by an unseen enemy.

When the colony comes under attack by a brutal alien force, can Haylie and Kamran keep their bond a secret and stop the invasion in time to save everyone?

Why I Love Man Titty

By Cynthia Sax on September 22, 2015

I’m talking about man titty on covers at the fabulous Sabine Priestley’s online home today.

http://sabinepriestley.com/blog/cynthia-sax-talks-sexy-cyborgs-and-hot-covers/

Here’s a snippet…

“First and foremost, I like looking at bare male chests (and shoulders and backs). All of those muscles, the interesting shadows, the vulnerability of exposed skin with the hint of power, fascinate me. I don’t need to see the man’s face. My idea of handsome isn’t the same as everyone’s. But a great male chest is universal. (grins)”

Half Man. Half Machine. All Hers.

Rage, the Humanoid Alliance’s most primitive cyborg, has two goals—kill all of the humans on his battle station and escape to the Homeland. The warrior has seen the darkness in others and in himself. He believes that’s all he’s been programmed to experience.
Until he meets Joan.

Joan, the battle station’s first female engineer, has one goal—survive long enough to help the big sexy cyborg plotting to kill her. Rage might not trust her but he wants her. She sees the passion in his eyes, the caring in his battle-worn hands, the gruff emotion in his voice.

When Joan survives the unthinkable, Rage’s priorities are tested. Is there enough room in this cyborg’s heart for both love and revenge?

Cyborgs Vs Androids Vs Clones

By Cynthia Sax on September 21, 2015

See other great SciFi romance posts here – http://sfrcontests.blogspot.ca/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html

The Humanoid Alliance has developed cyborgs as their ultimate weapon. They’re specially designed soldiers.

Why cyborgs? Why not androids or clones?

Clones

Clones are 100% human. They’re genetic copies of existing people. If factions within the Humanoid Alliance don’t want humans to be put at risk in battle, they won’t want clones to be put at risk either.

Clones might not wish to be put at risk also. They have free will. They are likely to rebel when faced with a certain death situation.

Because a clone’s ability is limited to what humans can do, alien species that threaten humans will threaten clones also. They’ll kill the clones as quickly as the original. The Mantidae, for example, are so fast and strong, they will end a human’s life before his or her feet touch the ground.

Androids

Androids are 100% machine. They can be constructed to be as strong or as fast as humans require. They will follow orders without question. They wouldn’t ever rebel or decide not to fight.

There are beings within the Humanoid Alliance who would prefer that androids, not cyborgs, be sent to the battlefields.

The biggest issue with android warriors is that instinct is a part of fighting. We’ve all seen dancers or singers or sports figures who know all of the moves, have all of the training, yet they don’t have that mysterious ‘it’ factor, the instinct, the feeling down deep in their gut to do X at Y time.

I’ve spoken with many human soldiers and they attest to instinct playing a huge role in whether they survive a battle or not. They have a feeling that the enemy is in a certain spot. They look and that’s where the enemy is.

Cyborgs

Cyborgs are half human, half machine. They are stronger and faster than humans yet they have human instinct. The Humanoid Alliance believes they will follow orders without question (this belief is wrong).

Because cyborgs aren’t completely human, the humans can tell themselves that a cyborg’s life isn’t as precious as a human’s life. They can view them as disposable weapons.

They’re seen as the best option (for now) for the battlefield.
