Interview With Carmen Falcone

By Cynthia Sax on May 31, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Carmen Falcone for a short interview. Carmen Falcone’s most recent release is Brazilian Capture, a Romantic Suspense!

Cynthia Sax: What causes problems between Emanuel and Erika?

Carmen Falcone: I’m a sucker for lots of conflict, so, yes, I make sure there’s plenty of it in my books! In Brazilian Capture, Emanuel Duarte is a successful financial investor who moonlights as an activist. In fact, helping others in need is a passion of his. He wants to redeem himself from wrongdoings from his past. His target is Silas Lancaster, who’s a real estate giant who’s involved in embezzlement and possibly the disappearance of an employee who knew too much. After dozens of disadvantaged families lose their homes due to Lancaster’s greed, Emanuel decides he’s had enough. He kidnaps Lancaster’s daughter, Erika, to use her as leverage. So, as you can imagine, this event sets all kinds of twists and turns. How can Erika trust her captor? And how can he give her back to her father when he’s falling for her? Yet, if he doesn’t fulfill his part of the bargain, all his efforts will have been in vain—and the promises he made to others, unfulfilled.

Cynthia Sax: Ohhh… that’s some juicy conflict. Is Brazilian Capture part of a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Carmen Falcone: Yes! The first book in the Brazilians was Brazilian Revenge, and the next one is Brazilian Surrender. I’m totally in love with the sexy, daring Duarte brothers.

Cynthia Sax: What advice would you give new writers?

Carmen Falcone: Hang in there. Write. Writing probably should come first—instead of complaining or doubting yourself, use your energy and write. I firmly believe each book teaches us a lesson, and it exists for a reason. Even if your first book won’t be the one you’ll self-publish or the one to wow agents and publishers, still write it. And then another, and another.

Cynthia Sax: That’s great advice! What do you love about writing romantic suspense?

Carmen Falcone:
I love romantic suspense because it puts the main characters in odd and dangerous situations. Just think about it—tension/despair/panic can being the worst in people. So I really enjoy making the characters get to know each other while in danger of some sort; because everything becomes much more intense.

Cynthia Sax: Tension DOES bring out a different side of people. Thank you for joining us today, Carmen Falcone!

Financier turned activist Emanuel Duarte has promised he would find the one witness who can testify against real estate developer Silas Lancaster. Sick of having every attempt at exposing Silas shut down, Emanuel wants to honor a promise he made, and takes from his opponent what matters most–his beautiful daughter Erika. Only he gets more than he bargained for with the tempting–and frustrating–woman.

Fundraiser and socialite Erika Lancaster can’t believe she’s been kidnapped. Her sexy captor is feeding her lies about her father that she refuses to swallow. Emanuel’s plans will hurt her and ruin her mother’s legacy–and that she can’t allow.

Desperate to find a way out of the lush Brazilian jungle, she decides there’s only way to disarm the enemy–seduce him. But her plan backfires and soon she realizes that seducing the enemy comes with a hefty price…loving the enemy simply isn’t an option.

Interview With Regine Abel

By Cynthia Sax on May 29, 2017

I sat down (virtually) with Regine Abel for a short interview. Regine Abel’s most recent release is Escaping Fate, a MFM Sci-Fi Paranormal Romance!

Cynthia Sax: What makes Lhor and Khel so freakin’ sexy?

Regine Abel: The only way for an unmated male to slow down the Taint plaguing him is through physical exertion. Xelixians therefore train on average four times a day, giving them insanely hot bodies. But the best part? Their fangs. No, they aren’t vampires. Their fangs are mainly used as weapons to paralyze or poison their prey. However, in the right dose, their venom acts as a recreational drug that brings a woman’s climax to a whole other level. On the other hand, Amalia’s Veredian markings darken when she’s aroused, making them erogenous. Wandering fingers or a teasing tongue brushing over them will make her writhe and squirm. But beware. When she enters her season, woe onto anyone who stands between Amalia and her mate.

Cynthia Sax: Ohhh… VERY sexy. What do you find especially exciting about Escaping Fate?

Regine Abel: Escaping Fate has a lot of flirting, sexual tension and steamy scenes. But that’s not what the book is about. There is a strong story with tons of action, suspense, and unexpected twists and turns. Amalia and her boys each have a unique personality that create some interesting situations from pretty funny to insanely intense. They’re all strong in their own way, often mischievous and badass when needed. I’m in love with those characters. If only I could meet them in real life and hang out!

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Escaping Fate?

Regine Abel: I’m a junky for any romance with the Mars Needs Women trope. There was no question in my mind I would write something in the genre, but what? I’m a huge fan of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changelings series, Tracy St. John’s Clans of Kalquor and M.K. Eidem’s Tornians. The idea of a species where individuals could each have a unique psychic ability excited me. I loved the world building in the Clan’s series with all the political intrigues and how the Kalquorians revisited what constituted a family unit to delay the slow extinction of their species. Grim inspired me with the social impact of their own crisis due to the scarcity of women; how it reshaped their society, redefined a woman’s role, a man’s worth, and the importance of social status. Escaping Fate was an attempt to combine these concepts in a fresh new way.

Cynthia Sax: I LOVE that trope also. Yum! Is Escaping Fate part of a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Regine Abel:
Yes, this is a series, although each book is intended to work as standalone. I’m currently halfway through writing the second book. There is an overarching story which should incentivize people to read the novels in order. Most main characters from the previous books will reappear in the sequels. However, each book explores the romance of a different Veredian female. While Escaping Fate is MFM, the rest of the series will be MF only. That said, I do plan two spin-off series set in the same universe, one of which is shaping up to be MFM. My new book, Anton’s Grace, part of my Dark Tales series, is actually set in this world though it takes place on the other side of the galaxy. I’m curious to see how many readers will catch the Easter egg there.

Cynthia Sax: My readers usually catch the Easter Eggs. (grins) Thank you for joining us today, Regine Abel!

Regine Abel’s Website: https://www.facebook.com/regine.abel.author/

*****************************************************************************

Born and raised on a slaver’s ship, Amalia plans to escape before she’s forced to participate in her master’s psi breeding program. She finds refuge on a foreign planet where she meets the cousins Lhor and Khel. Together, they fight against those hunting her down, while attempting to rescue the other victims of her master’s blood and sex slave ring.

Between her master’s dogged pursuit, deadly rivalries, assassins and corrupted nobles, can the cousins keep Amalia safe or will their respective feelings for her tear them apart?

This MFM novel is a constant toe-curling, action-packed thriller, and the first book in the Veredian Chronicles series. It is standalone with no cliffhanger.

Cyborg Series Mentioned As Favorite

By Cynthia Sax on May 24, 2017

Woot!

Julia at The Booklist Reader named Cyborg Sizzle as her favorite cyborg series!

“Plenty of books are concerned with the same question, pulling in robots, AI, clones, androids, and genetically modified humans. Indeed, I discovered a surprising number of racy series devoted to this, including Cyborg Seduction, Silver Metal Lover, Machine Lust, Body Electric, and, my personal favorite, Cyborg Sizzle.”

Jason Bourne And Motivation

By Cynthia Sax on May 22, 2017

I watched Jason Bourne on the weekend. I enjoyed it. Jason Bourne is an awesome character and there were so many great action scenes in this movie.

But one thing really bothered me—a secondary character’s motivation. She/he was doing terrible things—killing people, putting her/his own life on the line. The reason? Because he/she wanted a promotion.

I can see working late because I wanted a promotion. I can see sucking up to the boss because I wanted a promotion. Risking my life? Killing people? No way. That’s not strong enough motivation for those actions.

And the promotion isn’t the true goal. We want a promotion because it symbolizes something to us. Maybe a bigger paycheck comes with that promotion, which allows us to pay the rent, which gives us security, our true goal. Maybe our parents told us we’d never be anyone important and the promotion is a way to prove they were wrong, to earn us their love.

The actions can’t contradict the true goal. Putting my life at risk to ultimately gain security makes no sense. Killing people might not make our parents proud of us. I couldn’t figure out why this character wanted the promotion THAT much and it bothered me.

The motivation should also ideally be personal and as specific as possible. Saving the world is a great goal but why are we saving the world? Do we want to save ourselves? That’s a rather selfish goal. Or do we want to save our five-year-old Princess-loving daughter whom we’ve sworn to always keep safe? THAT is a powerful goal. I can envision it. I can cheer for it.

The more traumatic the action for that character, the bigger the motivation needs to be. If our hero is a cyborg warrior, a being designed for killing, a being who loves killing, he might not need much motivation to end a life. He could, however, require HUGE motivation to reveal one of his possible-life-ending weaknesses to the heroine.

If there is no motivation provided for actions, they appear random. There’s a lack of emotional connection. Some readers/viewers will become frustrated and care less about the characters.

If the motivation is provided and strong enough, however, almost EVERY action can be forgivable. We can write dark disturbing characters and folks will love them. The right motivation is THAT powerful.

Ghost Of A Machine And Names

By Cynthia Sax on May 10, 2017

In Ghost Of A Machine, the heroine’s name is Lethe.

That’s, of course, a nod to one of the five rivers of the underworld in Greek mythology.
All those who drank from the river Lethe experienced complete forgetfulness.

In contrast, Ghost, our hero, has been ‘cursed’ with a perfect memory (as all cyborgs are).

He can’t forget the beings he has failed and is unable to find peace because of this.

Lethe makes a comment that Ghost is an appropriate name for our hero because, during the discussion on Commander’s battle station, beings were treating him as though they couldn’t see him.

Ghost Of A Machine – Fourth Scene

By Cynthia Sax on May 8, 2017

Ghost Of A Machine will be releasing on May 16th (it is available for pre-order now!).

I’ve been sharing scenes from the first chapter.

You can read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/04/17/ghost-of-a-machine-first-scene/

This is the fourth and final scene from Chapter One.

***

Ace, the K Model cyborg, repaired his finger and palm interfaces, reconnecting the circuits. Ghost’s nanocybotics, the part of him that was responsible for his faster-than-human healing, were stimulated by the activity. Energy surged through him.

That increased his frustration over his failures, escalated his pain. Some of that emotion flowed into rage, his anger directed at himself and at his Humanoid Alliance handlers. The Humanoid Alliance had given the orders for the killing, had participated in it.

Ghost rumbled, yearning to take action, to ease his conscience.

Ace accessed the warship’s systems through Ghost’s interface. The doors slid open.

Ghost lurched forward, looked to the right and to the left. There were no guards. No one to give him commands. No one to punish.

Kill every being you see, Ace instructed.

Kill. Yes, he would kill them all. Then the pain inside him would dissipate. Then he’d be fully repaired, his human and his machine halves at peace.

Ghost flung back his head, released a roar, and rushed forward, searching for his first target. One of his handlers entered the corridor. The male’s eyes widened. He turned and ran in the opposite direction.

He wasn’t fast enough. Ghost moved at cyborg speed, faster than any human. He grabbed the male. The handler squawked.

Not having any weapons, Ghost bent his head. Using his teeth and hands, he ripped off the male’s skull, killing him quickly. That didn’t dampen the images of the females. He tore off the male’s arms and legs. The females’ faces remained in his thoughts.

He shredded the torso, the metallic taste of blood filling his mouth. It splattered over his naked form and oozed between his toes. Ghost painted the walls crimson, took the male apart until there was nothing left to grip.

The rage inside him didn’t dissipate. It grew until all he saw was red, until the only word in his processors, in his organic brain, was kill.

Ghost stormed through the warship, tracking beings by their scent. He battered through doors and walls to get to his targets, ending their lives as he had ended his handler’s life, quickly, brutally.

They couldn’t escape him and they deserved their fate. All of the males had tortured him, had delighted in causing him pain. They would pay for that, would pay for not allowing him to protect the females.

In Ghost’s damaged mind, the females’ deaths, his failure, and the males’ torment were bundled, mixed together in a volcanic vortex of emotion. Solar cycles of frustration gushed out of him, a red, heated, flow of rage, of violence.

The human warriors shot at him. He leaned toward their guns, embracing the agony. It was what he deserved. Projectiles riddled his form, biting into his skin. His nanocybotics hummed, struggling to heal him.

He continued killing. Beings screamed and begged for mercy. Their pleas didn’t penetrate his processors, didn’t reach his brain. He had been given an order—to kill every being he saw. He wouldn’t fail Ace, one of his own, not as he had failed the females. He ended the males’ lives with no hesitation.

The shuddering of the warship stopped as the corridors and the chambers flooded with blood. It was more than Ace’s order fueling Ghost, more than vengeance. The Humanoid Alliance had manufactured him for this, had designed him for killing, and it satisfied his machine to serve its purpose.

He hunted down every being on board the vessel.

Kill. Kill. Kill. He concentrated on that command, tearing the males into pieces with his mouth and hands. Blood streamed down his chest, scented the air.

He ravaged the last male. The warship was eerily quiet. Only the voices in his head remained.

They were fellow cyborgs, his processors relayed. The warriors were positioned on other ships, on planets. Some were free. Some remained slaves of the Humanoid Alliance.

None of them gave him his next order. Ghost stared down at the gore. Ace, the K Model cyborg, was silent. He’d withdrawn from Ghost’s processors.

The images of the females lingered, haunting him. His brain forgot. His databases never did. Ghost tried to sever the connection to his machine side. Both parts of him, wanting to remain whole, resisted and he wasn’t strong enough to overwhelm that blockade.

All he could do was slow the transfer of information.

He crouched beside his last target. Needing to do something, anything, he moved body parts from one spot to another.

That action didn’t stop the images running through his mind.

The last footage he’d recorded played. It featured the death of three females belonging to him, to his brethren. One of those females had been newly manufactured, couldn’t stand, couldn’t talk. All the females were defenseless. They’d surrendered to the Humanoid Alliance, laid down their primitive weapons.

The Humanoid Alliance, having no honor, had ordered the cyborgs to kill them. His brethren, not knowing who the females were to them, to their kind, had followed those commands.

Ghost had silently watched, unable to stop the carnage, his soul hollowed out by guilt. He couldn’t communicate to his brethren what they’d done, couldn’t give them that remorse, that grief. It was his to bear alone, silently.

The image faded.

The loop restarted. It always did, the torture never ceasing. The face of the little female filled his thoughts, her chubby cheeks, her brown curly hair, her big brown eyes.

The pain was endless and unbearable, projectiles piercing his brain, his heart, his soul. Ghost squeezed a handful of guts. Blood dripped on the tiled floor. He needed more beings to kill, more outlets for the agony. That might make the hurting tolerable.

More beings would arrive. The Humanoid Alliance would retrieve their warship.

When the males entered the vessel, he would seek vengeance. Every being he killed would be one less being able to harm the females.

That might ease his guilt, stop the pain.

Allow him to remain whole.

Fragile. Stubborn. His.

Ghost, a C Model cyborg, has disconnected his machine from his human side. Severely damaged, he knows two things—the curvy human female on his ship belongs to him and he must keep her safe. He’ll stop at nothing to protect her, claim her, make her his.

Primitive. Damaged. Hers.

Lethe has seen the savage side of beings. The courageous Rebel captain has never met a male like Ghost. Overpoweringly dominant, he appeals to her on a primal level, filling her mind with thoughts of sweet surrender, hard kisses, and body-heating encounters against the warship’s walls.

They are two broken beings, one determined to protect, the other intent on flying into danger. Can love heal them both before they face their common enemy?
