Sinful Rewards 4 And Expectations
This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old and/or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.
Our expectations of people, of the world, shape us. Bee, our heroine from Sinful Rewards, expects people to leave her.
This revealing excerpt from Sinful Rewards 4 (releasing tomorrow!) shows this.
I push through the front doors and stop, my breath catching. It can’t be. I stare, unable to believe my eyes. It is.
Hawke waits outside the building. Sunglasses are clipped to the collar of his black T-shirt. He’s wearing his usual blue jeans and military-style boots and straddles his huge bike. A blue helmet is perched on the sliver of a seat behind him. His head is bare, his brown hair styled short and straight, an adorable lopsided smile on his rugged face.
All thoughts of Happydale, of the bus, of anything other than Hawke disappear. My body hums to life, his mere presence resuscitating my desire, tightening my nipples, moistening my pussy. I want to run to him, to throw myself into his arms, to kiss the tiny scar on his square chin, brush my fingertips against his stubble.
Instead, I stand, frozen in place, my mind spinning. “You’re here.” My voice lilts with wonder. “You didn’t leave me.”
Hawke’s smile fades. “I’m not leaving you, love.”
This lie returns me to the cold, harsh reality. Nothing has changed. He remains a tattooed biker, a drifter unable to commit, and I’m a woman seeking forever.
“You told me you wouldn’t leave me last night.” I twist my lips, calling him on his bullshit. “Then I woke up and you were gone.”
Hawke’s thick eyebrows lower. “I had to run some errands this morning, but I’ll always return to you. You’re my girl.”
“You’ll always return to me?” I scoff, unable to believe in him, the cost of being wrong too painfully high.
“Always,” he repeats, his tone grave, as though he means what he says.
He’s not sincere. I release a ragged breath. This is another one of his flippant comments, such as calling me love or his girl. My military man doesn’t even know what forever means.
Hawke sighs, his big chest rising and falling. “You don’t believe me.”
“Of course I don’t believe you.” I roll my eyes. “People need a reason to return.”
His forehead furrows with thought lines. “You’re my reason.”
I can’t be the reason. I’m not enough for him, for anyone. Especially since he’s seen only the perverted, imperfect version of me. He’s heard me cuss, seen me stained with black ink, my nose and cheeks reddened from crying, watched me dance half-naked in the window. That’s not a woman worthy of returning for.
Bee’s dad left her mom as soon as he found out she was pregnant. He never returned. Bee’s default assumption is people will leave her. Ironically, her knee jerk response to difficult situations is to leave.
My default expectation of people is people are busy. They have their own sh*t to do and I should help myself. When folks help me out, I’m surprised and extremely grateful. I view this as a gift. They’re setting aside their own tasks to give me a hand.
What is your default expectation of people?

Writing Erotic Romance – Making Sex Sexy
This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old and/or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.
Sex, on its own, isn’t very sexy. Reading that Tab A is sliding into Slot B (or C or D) isn’t making anyone hot. Hell, I read a sex scene last week that reminded me of an erotic hokey pokey. He thrust his big cock in. He pulled his big cock out. He thrust his big cock in, came and shook it all about. No, just… no.
Great erotic romance is all about tone. I’ve read erotic romances with absolutely no sex that made my lady parts tingle. A talented erotic romance writer can craft a handholding scene into the sexiest snippet you’ve ever read. Her characters will eyefuck the hell out of each other before they even exchange a word. THIS is how erotic romances start sexy without characters jumping into bed together (beds? That’s so old-fashioned).
Action, Physical Reaction, Emotional Reaction
This is a trick I learned from Christine d’Abo, a woman who can make a soccer mom’s grocery list sound like the dirtiest piece of literature ever written. The basic construct for a sexy exchange is action, physical reaction, emotional reaction.
Here’s an example from Sinful Rewards 4
He nibbles, licks, sucks, ravishing my sensitive neck, and I press against him, relishing his strength and his size, his distinctive scent filling my nostrils.
He nibbles, licks, sucks, ravishing my sensitive neck <-- this is the initial action
I press against him <-- this is her physical reaction
relishing his strength and his size <-- this is her emotional reaction Every part is key and yes, you can write them out of order (though having the reaction before the action weakens the sentence) and the parts can appear in different sentences but for erotic romance readers, the emotional reaction is key. This is why we’re reading your story.
Size Matters
Because erotic romance readers are reading for emotion, EVERYTHING in the story should serve this emotion. This includes grammar. Yes, I saw the grammar Nazis wince. But it’s true. Short sentences are choppy. They’re great for action scenes. They’re not-so-great for sex scenes. Sex scenes call for luxuriously long, flowing run-on sentences.
Let’s revisit our example
He nibbles, licks, sucks, ravishing my sensitive neck, and I press against him, relishing his strength and his size, his distinctive scent filling my nostrils.
Compare this to
He ravishes my sensitive neck. I press against him. I relish his strength and his size. His distinctive scent fills my nostrils.
These two snippets have completely different tones. The first is sexy. The second… yeah, not-so-much.
A trick I use is to read my scenes out loud, taking a breath at every period. If I sound like I’m hyperventilating, I know I need longer sentences.
It is tempting, especially in erotic romances written in first person (as Sinful Rewards is), to have body parts lead the action.
His big hands cupped her ass.
This adds variation to sentences, breaking up the he did this, he did that structure.
The problem with this is a) body parts don’t move on their own and b) readers don’t care about body parts. They care about characters. Readers want characters to take action.
He cupped her ass with both of his big hands.
Is always more powerful than
His big hands cupped her ass.
The pet peeve of editors everywhere is moving eyeballs. Gazes move. Eyes, unless you’re writing a Minority Report type of SciFi erotic romance, don’t move.
Felt, Touched, Saw, Smelled
These are filtering words, putting distance between your reader and your character.
Instead of saying “Bee saw his cock harden.”, simply tell us what Bee saw. “His cock hardened.”
“She felt white hot desire.” becomes “A wave of white hot desire swept over her.”
Word Choice
Word choice is key in any sex scene. One wrong word will pull a reader out of the story. Some words aren’t sexy at all. “He scissors her nipples with his fingers.” Ouch! Unless you’re writing horror erotic romance, keep the scissors away from delicate body parts.
Some words are wrong for your specific scene. “He eased his cock into her pussy.” is very different than “He pounded his cock into her pussy.” Both are great sentences. Only one fits the mood of the scene you’re writing.
How do you make your sex scenes sexy?
Next week, I’ll talk about how to make every sex scene different.

Interview With Whitley Gray
I sat down (virtually) with Whitley Gray for a short interview. Whitley Gray’s latest release is Crash Pad, a MM Contemporary.
Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Crash Pad?
Whitley Gray: “Okay. I’m back. The boys are trying to murder each other. Superman and Batman are not friends, no matter what they tell you.”
“It’s that superpower-envy thing.” Jamie chuckled.
This is from a telephone conversation Jamie has with his sister. I like the visual of Jamie’s two nephews racing around in capes, Bat powers versus Spidey senses. No cooperation of superheroes in a household with two young boys, who compete with each other about everything.
One of the things I like the most about writing is layering in little details like this, especially things the typical reader may be able to relate to.
Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Crash Pad?
Whitley Gray: I set out to create a story set in the summer. Lots of people run in the park year-round, and I wanted to add an activity more confined to nicer weather—like rollerblading. This activity also lent itself to an accidental meeting, as rollerblading isn’t easy, especially for beginners.
Remy is an Emergency Medicine doctor and has seen a lot of sports injuries due to accidents. Naturally he wants to help. Jamie is suspicious of doctors due to his background. The opposing viewpoints makes for some nice conflict.
Cynthia Sax: How does Crash Pad start?
Whitley Gray: As they say, always start in the action. Each of the guys has a backstory that contributes to the story, but initially it’s not necessary to know that history in order to understand what’s happening. I like to start with a brief orientation of location and what each character is doing, and then throw them right into the action. The story starts when Remy and Jamie “crash.”
Cynthia Sax: What one piece of advice would you give new writers?
Whitley Gray: Voracious readers make the best writers. If you don’t like to read, writing is the wrong career choice.
In the beginning, I think it’s vital to ground yourself in the fundamentals of writing. I don’t have a background in English Composition or Creative Writing—I’m a hard science person. For me, the best way to learn about writing was with a combination of online workshops and devouring a lot of books on craft. Since romance adds another complex layer to any story, it was important to move on to workshops about writing romance in particular. Finally, because I write M/M romance, I did a lot of reading in the genre itself, then workshops and books to help me get a good handle on what I wanted to do.
Thank you, Whitley Gray, for joining us today!

Physician Remy Marshall has two loves: Emergency Medicine and running. Work doesn’t leave much time to meet guys, and most seem more interested in his bank account than him. With a week off to train for a marathon, Remy plans to make the most of his precious vacation. The last thing he needs is a distraction.
Jamie Sutton is new to the area. He hopes to make a fresh start after leaving an abusive relationship with an orthopedic surgeon. He’s got a new job as a massage therapist and wants to meet some nice guys. Against his better judgment, Jamie decides the best way to meet a cute rollerblader he’s seen in the park is on wheels.
With attention on his watch and not where he’s going, Remy crashes into Jamie and fractures the first-time rollerblader’s ankle. Jamie has no one to help him after the injury; Remy proposes Jamie stay with him. Jamie is reluctant, but it’s a better option than staying with the odd guy in the neighboring motel room. As the two get acquainted, Jamie’s past comes calling. Remy discovers the prize he really wants isn’t a medal in a marathon, but the man right in front of him.

Spicy Excerpt From Shades Of Pink
This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.
I’ve donated a 16 page contemporary erotic romance short story to Shades Of Pink, an anthology with proceeds benefiting cancer research. For a small donation (the recommended amount is $5 U.S.), you’ll receive over 400 pages of yummy romance stories written by 22 authors with varying heat levels (my story doesn’t even warrant the highest heat level).
Here is an excerpt
“Monsieur Voclain was your boss.” He brushes a tendril of hair away from my face, his fingertips graze my cheeks and a spark of awareness flows from his form to mine. “I’m Roch.”
“And who is Roch?” My voice is husky, my body enthralled by his touch. “Is he my friend?”
“He’s your everything.” He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me to him. His chest flattens my breasts. His hips smack against mine and I suck in my breath. He’s hard, the ridge in his dress pants pressing against my stomach.
I arouse him. My mouth dries and my rational thoughts evaporate. “You want me.”
“I want you more than life.” Roch dips his head and captures my lips with his, the pressure firm, the contact unexpected. I yield to him and he surges inside me. Our tongues tumble, twine, dance, every nerve ending snapping and sizzling, bombarding me with sensation.
I’m not alone in this bliss. Roch’s groans travel down my throat and coil around my heart as he kisses me with his renowned focus, making me the center of his universe.
My resignation letter drifts to the gray carpet, forgotten. I’ve never been embraced like this, as though I truly was more important than life. My lips hum and my head spins. I rest my trembling fingers on his suit jacket, the fabric decadent against my skin, and I open wider to him, submitting to his dominance.
He presses farther into me, tasting of mint, black coffee, and hot, horny male, his grip on me secure, his ownership of my body, mind, soul complete. I can’t escape him, not that I want to. Roch Voclain, the man I’ve lusted after seemingly forever, is kissing me, setting my body ablaze with want and need.
My fingers curl around his lapels as I cling to him, swiveling my hips against the bulge in his dress pants. I don’t know how long this madness will last, if he will come to his senses and realize whom he’s seducing, remember that his assistant, his employees are sitting outside his office, stop this sweet torment.
I don’t want this to ever end. Roch fucks my mouth with a thrilling ferocity, each stroke of his tongue escalating my passion. I arch as he slides his hands up my back, holding me tightly to him.
His fingers tangle in my curls. Hairpins fall and the tendrils tumble over my shoulders. He murmurs words I can’t decipher, the sound muffled by my lips, and he burrows his hands in the softness.
I’m lost in him, captivated by his touch, taste, smell. Roch is in control, turning us slowly, walking me backward until my thighs hit the edge of the desk. He lifts me onto the hard surface, spreads my legs, and fills the space with his hips.
My hemline raises to my mons. My panties rub against his pants-covered cock, the silk damp with my desire, my musk scenting the air.
There’s no disguising my eagerness and I make no attempt to try, pushing his jacket off his shoulders.
I inhale sharply, sucking on his tongue. He’s all man, his shoulders broad, his muscles rippling under the fine fabric of his shirt, and this afternoon, he’s mine.

Writer’s Retreats – Myths Vs Reality
When I was first asked to attend a writer’s retreat, I thought it would be a girls weekend. We’d drink wine, eat Nutella straight out of the jar, talk about book boyfriends, maybe watch the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, drooling over Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. It would be relaxing, a… well… a retreat, damn it.
I joked with my hubby about working too hard, packed up my laptop, printed a copy of my crazy mess of a manuscript, and headed off to the retreat, prepared to kick back and relax.
THEN I found out what a writing retreat truly was. There were timers. There were charts with word counts. There were five women sitting in front of laptops, writing until fingers were bloody stumps.
And that is the way it should be. We were all taking time away from our wonderful families to concentrate on our writing. We worked hard. We wrote until the wee hours of the morning. We finished manuscripts and plotted new stories. We got shit done.
Yes, we also drank wine and ate Nutella. We shared what we’ve learned thus far on our publishing journeys. We passed along opportunities we weren’t interested in, that our writing buddies might like.
I returned home energized, excited, validated. These terrific women made their writing a priority. I could also put my writing first (for a weekend at least).
One of the reasons I’m talking about writer’s retreats today is because we’re creeping close to November 1st, the start of NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. The grand NaNoWriMo challenge is to write 50,000 words (approximately 200 pages) in a month.
There will be retreats offered such as the ones I’ve attended and you’ll be expected to work at these retreats. It might seem silly to you to leave your warm, comfy house simply to sit in front of your laptop screen somewhere else.
Try it. At least once. If it doesn’t work for you, fine. Now, you know. But if it does work, it could be the exact environment you need to finish that story, to put your writing first.

Second Excerpt For Sinful Rewards 4
This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.
Last week, I shared a spicy excerpt from Sinful Rewards 4 ( http://tasteofcyn.com/2014/09/30/first-excerpt-from-sinful-rewards-4/).
Today, I’m sharing a more playful excerpt.
At four sixteen, exactly fourteen minutes after our call ended, the doorbell rings. I look through the peephole, see a giant brown eye, and laugh. My control-freak billionaire is trying to peer into the condo. I swing the door open. “Peepholes work only one way,” I tease.
“I thought you might require retinal identification.” Nicolas smiles, his white teeth flashing in his tanned face, and I inhale sharply. He’s so damn handsome, even when exhausted, his black hair swept back from his gorgeous face, a hint of darkness under his eyes, a shadow of stubble on his chin.
My body hums with excitement. I’ve gained an appreciation for stubble, loving the feel of it against my soft skin. “Welcome to my, or rather the Wynterses’, humble abode.” I give the main room a game-show wave, showing Nicolas all of its fabulous features, features he installed.
He looks around him, his gaze stopping at Cyndi’s bedroom. “Their humble abode is a mess.” Nicolas shakes his head. “That must be the Wynters girl’s room.” He strides toward it.
“Don’t go in there.” I hurry after him, intent on protecting Cyndi’s privacy. “That’s her private space.”
“I’m closing the door.”
“Don’t close the door,” I shout. Nicolas stops abruptly and I smack into his back. He turns and gazes at me as though I’ve lost my mind, which I suppose I have. “I like having it open,” I explain, my voice lowered to a normal volume.
Nicolas raises his eyebrows. “Her room is a disaster zone. You want to look at that?”
“Yes,” I admit, avoiding his gaze. Seeing Cyndi’s things reassures me she’ll return to the condo, to me. She’d never leave all of her stuff behind.
“Come on,” I urge, not sharing any of this with Nicolas. “We’re serving ice cream at the kitchen counter.”
Nicolas looks at the bedroom, bewilderment flitting across his beautiful face. I wait, my heart pounding, my fears admittedly irrational yet real to me.
He shrugs his broad shoulders and follows me into the main living room-kitchen space. He’s a smaller man than Hawke, yet his tread is heavier, noisier.
Relieved that the bedroom crisis is over, I saunter to the fridge and extract the carton of Heavenly Hash ice cream from the freezer compartment. The glass cups and spoons are already laid out on the counter.
Nicolas perches on a stool, touches the bowl of jelly beans, and frowns. “These look familiar.”
My face heats. My roommate tossed a bowl of jelly beans out of the window recently, earning all building residents a memo from Nicolas’s management team. “It sometimes rains jelly beans.” I scoop ice cream into the cups. “Chicago weather is strange.”
Nicolas sprinkles a handful of jelly beans onto his ice cream. “Your messy roommate is the strange one.”
“Cyndi is my best friend.” I jump to her defense. “And she bought the ice cream you’re eating.” I place the tub back in the freezer. “Be nice.”
“I’m not a nice man.” Nicolas swallows a spoonful of ice cream. “But she does have good taste in ice cream. Does this have marshmallow in it?” He dissects the creamy treat. “It does, and almonds. God, this is good.” He sucks on his spoon, appearing adorably boyish.
I sit beside him and we eat ice cream. My billionaire’s blue silk tie is loosened, the top button of his crisp white shirt undone. His navy blue suit hugs his lean body. His leather dress shoes balance on the bar stool’s footrest.
He’s here alone. He arrived alone. “Shouldn’t you have a bodyguard with you?”
Nicolas’s lips curve around his spoon. “Am I in danger? Should I be scared?” His dark eyes sparkle.
“Be serious.” I slap his shoulder.

Writing Erotic Romance – The Basics Of A Sex Scene
This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old and/or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.
Knowing how to write a sizzling hot sex scene is a must-have skill for erotic romance writers. Today, I’ll be talking about some sex scene basics.
Know Your Anatomy
Before you write a sex scene, know your basic anatomy. Unless your hero is an alien, his cock isn’t touching the heroine’s womb. That’s not possible. It also isn’t piercing her clit. (winces) That’s a big ouch! Slamming his cock head into her cervix is extremely painful (and highly unlikely unless he’s an alien). Having anal sex without lubrication can send a human to the hospital. It certainly isn’t sexy.
Keeping Track Of Body Parts
A hero can’t rub a heroine’s clit, grab her breast AND brace himself over her writhing body at the same time, not unless he’s an alien. A man only has two hands.
Some writers use Barbie dolls to keep track of body parts. This also ensures that the position is possible and semi-pleasurable (for human lovers). If your Barbie or Ken looks like the girl from Exorcist, you might want to rethink your sex scene.
The body part issue is one of the many reasons erotic romance writers tend to avoid writing in public places. Many of us act out the scene while writing it. Starbucks doesn’t appreciate customers giving imaginary heroes handjobs. (grins)
The Order Counts
Unless your character is being abused or severely disciplined, anal sex is always last. ALWAYS. Don’t have your heroine suck your hero off after he’s had his cock in her ass. In Romanceland, anal sex might be clean. In real life, it is often VERY dirty. Sucking a shit-flavored cock isn’t sexy.
Don’t have the hero go from anal to pussy without a shower or a brand new condom (even the brand new condom is an iffy call), not unless the follow up scene is a trip to the doctor. No heroine wants shit in her woman parts. Trust me on this.
No, Thank You To All Night Long
Yes, when a couple (or more) get together for the first (or second or third) time, they often fuck like bunnies. They don’t, however, have sex sixteen times in one night. The guy would probably die of dehydration. Body parts would be rubbed raw. (winces) The chafing would be horrifying.
And readers don’t want or need to read that. One long fuck, with plenty of foreplay, is better than sixteen short fucks. Think quality over quantity in an erotic romance.
Recovery Time Needed
Which leads to the next point… guys need to rest between sex sprees. Women can come multiple times. The average human man comes once and then has to have a break. The average recovery time (or refractory period) for a man is half an hour (unless he’s eighteen, then it is fifteen minutes – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refractory_period_%28sex%29 ). Your human hero might be doing other things like giving the heroine oral sex but he won’t be hard.
How Big Is BIG?
Okay, I admit to liking heroes with huge cocks. A snug fit not only helps with great sex but it signals manliness and being “meant for each other”. How I feel about cock sizes is similar to how I feel about billionaires. I could read about broke ass heroes with small cocks but that isn’t my fantasy and, damn it, fantasy is what I’m looking for.
However, when I read about a 12 inch cock, I wince. The average man has an erect cock varying between 5.1 and 5.9 inches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_penis_size ). 12 inches is way too big for this average gal.
But you might feel differently. That’s why I prefer not to mention a specific length. One woman’s HUGE might be another woman’s small.
