Interview With J.K. Coi

By Cynthia Sax on November 1, 2016

I sat down (virtually) with J.K. Coi for a short interview. J.K. Coi’s latest release is Loving Lord Spy, an absolutely delicious WWII romance included in Once Upon a Christmas: A Wynter Family Saga, a Historical and Contemporary Holiday Romance Anthology.

Cynthia Sax: I know you were super excited about contributing to Once Upon a Christmas. What makes this anthology special?

J.K. Coi: I love this anthology for a lot of reasons. The first is because the four of us have been good friends for a long time, and we’ve been hoping for an opportunity to collaborate, but since our styles and genres are pretty different across the board, we didn’t have a chance until the idea of doing this family saga spanning different time periods came to us.

I also love the stories because they’re all so wonderfully written, full of hope and the Christmas spirit. They just feel good to read.

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Loving Lord Spy?

J.K. Coi: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the movie An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and so when I was thinking about how to put together the novella for this anthology, it immediately came to mind maybe because of the time period I would be writing in. So I took a little bit of Cinderella, and a little bit of this movie, and came up with Loving Lord Spy.

Cynthia Sax: Where is Loving Lord Spy set?

J.K. Coi: This anthology is exciting because it tells stories of the Wynter family through a couple of different time periods. My novella takes place at the end of WWII, and I hadn’t written in this genre before. I love a challenge and I realized while writing this that I would like to write more stories in this time period.

Cynthia Sax: Having read your story, I would LOVE if you wrote more stories in that time period. It really fascinates me.
What creates problems between David and Winnie?

J.K. Coi:
The conflict between David and Winnie comes from their responsibilities. They don’t have a lot of time together. They fall in love hard and fast without knowing a lot about one another, and they’ve both made commitments to the war, so until that’s over, they can’t possibly think about a future together. Then again, so much can happen between now and then… and while they’re separated, both of them learn things that challenge what they thought they knew about the other.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you for joining us today, J.K.!

The holidays are a time for family, celebration—and the Dukes of Ravenglass to fall in love. Spend the Christmas season with the Wynter family, as the Dukes of Ravenglass find their happily-ever-afters in this delightful, heartfelt collection that spans from the Regency era to the present day.

In A Price Above Rubies by Maggie Robinson, set in the Regency era, paid companion Helen Lowe doesn’t know the man she shares her first-ever dance—and first-ever kiss—is Gabriel Wynter, a reclusive, notorious duke. When Helen flees after being exposed, she leaves behind something of far greater value than a glass slipper. Can Gabriel find her, return it, and finally open his heart?

In the Victorian-era set, Never Have I Ever Fallen in Love with a Duke by Tiffany Clare, Alexander Wynter has a problem—his best friend’s younger sister grew up. When he agreed to help Emily MacCallon make her debut, he didn’t expect the beautiful, alluring woman before him—or for her to lead him on such a merry chase. Alexander knows one thing: the only man she’ll be kissing forever and ever is him.

In the World War II-set, Loving Lord Spy by J.K. Coi, Winnie Jenkins, a combat nurse, and Lord David Wynter, an injured British spy, fall in love at the worst possible time. Each of them owes a duty to their country and must go their separate ways. They promise that when the war is finally over, they’ll meet in Hyde Park on Christmas morning…but agree that if one of them doesn’t make it, the other won’t seek out the reason why. Can they keep their appointment? Or will secrets, lies, and the perils of war keep them apart?

A missed connection gets a second chance in the present-day contemporary romance, Saved by the Belle by Elyssa Patrick. Seven years ago, Kit Wynter met the woman of his dreams. Even after all this time, he’s never been able to forget the American girl who captured his heart. When Belle Sweeney answers his ad—for she, too, never forgot him—it feels like there’s something still there. Spending the holiday at Ravenglass Abbey is the perfect opportunity to figure out if this is love.

Interview With J.K. Coi

By Cynthia Sax on December 7, 2015

I sat down (virtually) with J.K. Coi for a short interview. J.K. Coi’s latest release is Protecting his Ass(ets), a Contemporary Romance.

Cynthia Sax: What makes Steve, the hero, absolutely lickable?

J.K. Coi: Steve Nolan is completely comfortable with April as his bodyguard, and that makes him really sexy. I love the fact that he has no problem asserting his own masculinity without diminishing any of April’s significant strength. He can let her be his bodyguard and acknowledge her intelligence and experience without feeling threatened by it, mostly because he knows where his own gifts and talents lie and he’s confident in himself.

Cynthia Sax: What is one thing that makes you super excited about Protecting his Ass(ets) release?

J.K. Coi: I’ve been excited for this story ever since meeting Steve in Ben’s book, IN BED WITH THE COMPETITION. He was a horrible, smart-ass flirt, but there were depths to him that I was eager to explore, and he turned out to have more going for him than even I had originally imagined.

Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Protecting his Ass(ets)?

J.K. Coi: It’s a little more than a one liner, but I like the exchange between April and Steve so much and this is a great example of it.

“Wait!” she cried. “Don’t you dare ruin those pants.”
He paused and grinned at her. “I have others.”
“No you don’t,” she reminded him, looking back into the pantry. “Not unless you think your devastating smile is enough to keep people from noticing that your clothes have all been slashed to ribbons.” She scooted to grab a roll of paper towels from the bottom shelf.
He grinned. “You think my smile is devastating?”
Heat bloomed up to her forehead. “I think you know exactly what you do with your smile, and it’s all very calculated.”
“Shit. My secret’s out.” His grin only widened.

Cynthia Sax: What creates conflict between April and Steve?

J.K. Coi:
April and Steve are from very different worlds, and she’s been burned before by the class gap and doesn’t want to let her guard down again. Steve’s learned from experience to keep his true self close to the vest unless he wants his privacy aired to the entire world. Because of it, most people take his flirty, playboy image at face value and don’t get to see the genuine guy with a math geek’s heart that he really is.

Interview With J.K. Coi

By Cynthia Sax on June 30, 2014

I sat down (virtually) with J.K. Coi for a short interview. J.K. Coi is a dear friend of mine, a wonderful person and a gifted writer. Her latest release is In Bed with the Competition, a sexy Contemporary.

Cynthia Sax: What makes your Ben, your hero, so freakin’ sexy?

J.K. Coi: Ben is confident and smart – OMG so smart. He wears these reading glasses when he’s working that just make you want to drool because they’re so nerdy that they’re somehow uber hot. And yet he can totally rock a business suit like nobody’s…uh…business and still look fantastic and chiseled in nothing but a swimming trunk. He’s quick to smile and loves to tease, but he also has a deep heart.

Cynthia Sax: That’s PUNtastic! (grins) What excites you about In Bed with the Competition?

J.K. Coi: I love the back-and-forth between these characters. They really challenge each other, and their story challenged me to give them an adventure!

Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from In Bed with the Competition and why?

J.K. Coi: Well, I like this little snippet of a few short lines because it’s fun, but also sexy and intense, which is exactly what my two characters are like when they’re together! *grin*

“We have to be careful about cavorting with the enemy,” Beth murmured.

He stepped closer. “Is that what we are?”

“What? Enemies?” Her gaze fixed on his mouth, and he watched as she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. He’d been waiting for that all night.

He pulled her against him. “No…cavorting.”

Cynthia Sax: What creates conflict between Ben and Beth?

J.K. Coi:
Ben and Beth have a past, but now they’re also each other’s biggest business competitor. Each of them are attending this industry convention in Antigua looking to snag a big opportunity that could make or break their careers.

Thank you, J.K. Coi, for joining us today!

Interview With J.K. Coi

By Cynthia Sax on May 27, 2013

I sat down (virtually) with J.K. Coi for a short interview. J.K. Coi writes hot, emotional paranormal erotic romances for Ellora’s Cave and her latest release is Forever Immortal. I read J.K.’s Immortal series when it was previously released, absolutely raved over them then, and now she’s tweaked them so they’re even better. I didn’t think that was even possible!

Cynthia Sax: What makes your Gideon sexy?

J.K. Coi: The thing I love about Gideon is the very fact that he thinks he’s NOT hero material. He’s a scientist at heart who only ever wanted to bury himself in the lab. And the reality is that he failed miserably at being a warrior, making a devastating mistake early on that cost someone special her life. Since then, he thinks he has to let go of the scientist if he’s going to redeem himself, and so he’s trained and trained and trained until he can barely remember the person he used to be.

Cynthia Sax: What excites you about Forever Immortal?

J.K. Coi: I love this story because the hero and heroine are so feisty. They play off each other with bravado and wit, and sparks fly like crazy. I also love it because it’s the fourth book in the series and brings a lot of the characters from the first book back together. And although I thought it would be the last book, now I know there’s more for me to write!

Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Forever Immortal and why?

J.K. Coi: “Human or not, we all have a demon inside us somewhere,” Gideon pressed. “It doesn’t make you a monster unless you can’t control it.”

“That’s the thing,” she whispered. “I don’t know that I can.”

He sighed. “Then that’s where we have a problem.”

I don’t know why I love this scene in the story so much, but it really shows how hard Gideon is fighting to help Lyssa, not only because she’s the mistake he has to fix – but because he sees himself in her. If she’s a monster who can’t be redeemed, what hope is there for him?

Cynthia Sax: What creates conflict between Gideon and Lyssa?

J.K. Coi:
Gideon is a warrior charged with protecting the human realms from the demons who have escaped their eternal prison. Five years ago he was new to the job and when he chased down a particularly nasty demon, he made a huge mistake which put a woman in the crossfire. Now she’s returned, but she’s no longer human and he’s torn between wanting to help her, and doing what he knows he has to do…

Thank you, J.K. Coi, for joining us today!

Eight years ago, science and reason ruled Gideon Bennett’s life. Until the death of an Immortal triggered a physical transformation, forcing him out of the laboratory and into a world of violence for which he was ill-prepared. Now a seasoned warrior, he is still haunted by his one massive failure—and the face and body of the woman he couldn’t save.

Lyssa James wasn’t looking for trouble when she set out to enjoy a night on the town. Instead she got a first-class ticket to a demon Hell dimension where she was trapped for eight long years. Now she’s finally escaped…only to run into the man who failed her. The passion between them is instant and irresistible, but neither of them is the same person they were eight years ago. And even as they battle with their desire, one of the nastiest demons from the Abyss is on the loose, threatening not only their lives but the future of humanity.
