Mirage and The Caves
Part of Dark Fire is set in Mirage, a play place for the credit-heavy on Carinae E. It may seem strange that beings with the ability to go anywhere would choose a rough outlaw planet as a vacation spot.
I’ve visited some rough places on Earth and in every spot, there has been a fancy resort or some other property catering to the wealthy. Not-as-civilized places have different rules and often fewer of them. Things that might be illegal elsewhere (like the fights to the death featured on Carinae E) are tolerated. There’s also the appeal of roughing it, sort of like exotic camping.
It’s logical that outlaw planets like Carinae E would also attract the same sort of beings.
In Mirage, the high credit beings live in structures. These domiciles are fabricated with all of the devices and features a being could wish to have in a home. They are as individual as the beings living in them, pure luxury.
The poor, including our heroine Faylee, live in the caves. They can’t live in the open due to the brutal desert climate. The caves provide shade from the harsh sun.
I’ve seen that also while I was traveling. The poor construct makeshift homes in caves, the walls, floors and roofs provided by nature. There’s no sewage system so the smell is eye-watering and the refuse builds up. The garbage and other waste has nowhere to go.
It is merely subsistence living and Faylee dreams of a future outside the caves. She’ll do anything to make that dream a reality, even steal from a huge silver-scaled Dracheon warrior.

Releasing Rage – Mother’s Day Snippet
Sunday is Mother’s Day in North America. I’ve been sharing Mom-themed snippets all week. Of course, this wouldn’t be complete without an excerpt from Releasing Rage. (grin)
We created offspring, female.
Joan struggled to absorb Rage’s words.
She’d reviewed the research gathered from the breeding programs. There had been zero offspring conceived. No pairings had been successful.
The scientists had expected the breeding programs to work. The genetic blueprint for cyborg mechanics had been inserted into the DNA sequence. The nanocybotics had been modified, allowing for the expansion of their parts as cyborg offspring matured, ensuring both man and machine grew in concert.
But the very nature of the nanocybotics prevented conception. As Rage had explained the planet rotation they’d met, a cyborg’s nanocybotics viewed any fertilized egg as a damaged egg. They ‘repaired’ it, returning the egg to its former unfertilized state.
In a laboratory, a scientist could administer a suppressor immediately before fertilization. That was too complex to be coded into DNA.
Faced with those facts, Joan had realized she’d never have offspring with Rage. She’d accepted that future, thought herself content with one big C Model cyborg to love and care for.
Now they’d have a son.
“You’re certain?” she asked. It was too incredible to be believed.
“We’re certain.” There was no doubt in Doc’s voice.
Surge nodded.
“Our offspring is inside you, female.” Rage rushed to her side, a silly smile lighting his normally grim face. “You’ve made me the happiest cyborg in the universe.”
He scooped her into his arms, scanning blanket and all, and he spun. The chambers’ lights whizzed around them. She clung to his neck, kicked her feet, and laughed, his exuberance feeding hers.
She hadn’t inadvertently killed the male she loved. She was giving him a son.

Dark Strength – Mother’s Day Snippet
As Sunday is Mother’s Day in North America, I thought we’d look at some Mom-themed snippets this week.
Today’s snippet is from Dark Strength and is a nod to all of the wonderful furbaby Moms in Romanceland.
“She’ll make it. Won’t you?” His female talked to the puffker. “You’re tough like I am, a survivor. The bad males won’t end your lifespan.”
Fraggin’ hole. She was already attached to the creature.
He slipped one of his palms under the puffker. It tried to bite him, couldn’t pierce his thick skin with its tiny teeth, its growls more cute than menacing.
“We’re friends.” His female attempted to ease its fear. “We won’t ever hurt you.”
The puffker stared at her with wide eyes. Its nose twitched.
“She understands us.” Elyce beamed. “She knows we’re her friends.”
“Pull your flight suit down until the fabric covers your fingers.” The puffker might be able to understand them but he wasn’t taking any risks with his female. “And cup your hands.”
She did as he instructed. He transferred the little creature to her palms. It immediately expressed its unhappiness with that action, sinking its teeth into the cloth.
“She’s holding on.” His female held a different view of the puffker’s attack.
“Hold onto her also.” And he, in turn, would hold onto Elyce. He swung her into his arms, relishing the feel of her against him.
“I won’t let go.” She gazed down at her little bundle. “You can count on me, Balvan. I won’t disappoint you.”
“You could never disappoint me.” He kissed the top of her head as he walked with her.
Elyce relayed that kiss to the puffker’s fluffy head. “Where are we going? Are we taking her home?”
Home. His female thought of their domicile as her home.
“Yes, we’re taking her home.” His voice was gruff with emotion.

Breathing Vapor – Mother’s Day Snippet
Mother’s Day in North America is on Sunday. I thought we’d celebrate this week by looking back at some of the Mother-themed moments in my stories.
Today’s excerpt is from Breathing Vapor and is a nod to all of the wonderful adopted Moms in Romanceland.
“Some of the cyborgs will be freed from planets besieged by war.” Vapor’s voice grew gruff with emotion. “There could be humanoid offspring on these planets. They might not have parents to care for them.”
Mira lifted her head. “That’s possible.”
What was he suggesting? It couldn’t be what she thought, hoped, dreamed. Her heart beat faster. They hadn’t discussed offspring since they left Tau Ceti. She’d accepted that she might never be a mother, had concentrated on the two of them, on helping all cyborgs escape.
Vapor set her feet on the floor. He slipped his right hand into one of his holsters, scooped out some cloth, and pressed it into her palms.
Mira smoothed the fabric and her breath hitched. It was a doll, constructed of scrap material, formed with binding. The face was crudely drawn, the eyes lopsided, the smile uneven.
Her rough tough warrior had crafted this toy. He was talking about offspring. Hope unfurled in Mira’s chest.
“What is this?” She had to be certain she wasn’t misunderstanding his meaning.
“It’s an Ulu.” Vapor shifted his weight from his right foot to his left. He looked down at the doll, not meeting her gaze. “We’ll give it to the offspring.”
“To the offspring?”
“To our offspring.” He touched the doll’s garment. His fingers shook. Her normally confident cyborg was nervous. That’s how much this conversation meant to him.

Taking Vengeance And Scanning Second Buoir
Some reading buddies have asked about scanning on Second Buoir. Astrid, the heroine of Taking Vengeance, has to search for her family’s remains on foot because the terrain is unscannable yet Vengeance, our hero, completes a lifeform scan of the planet.
How is this possible? It sounds like a continuity error.
I DO make errors in my stories. (sheepish smile) Every book ever written has a few mistakes in it. But this isn’t one of them.
A lifeform scanner is useless to find remains. There’s no life left in the bodies. But other scanners are as ineffective.
Astrid knows her family’s remains are buried. The soil is what makes Second Buoir unscannable or, to be more exact, unscannable for Astrid’s purpose – which is to pinpoint the location of human remains hidden under the soil.
On Earth today, ground-penetrating radar ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-penetrating_radar#Limitations) is often used to locate buried bodies. BUT GPR isn’t effective with all soils. Soils with a high clay content, for example, are often unreadable (soils with a high clay content can also cause natural mummification of bodies – grins).
Although GPR’s capabilities will improve in the future, Second Buoir is a unique planet, has its own unique soil. I suspect the technology would have to be farther tweaked for Astrid’s usage and she doesn’t have those resources.
A different type of heroine might use the unique soil as a way to block lifeform scans. She would ‘hide’ in an underground bunker or cave.
Astrid isn’t the hiding type. She lives defiantly on the surface, where she can be scanned. I love that about her!

Taking Vengeance And Why The Humanoid Alliance Attacked Second Buoir
This could be one of Astrid’s ancestors
Astrid, the heroine of Taking Vengeance, lives on Second Buoir. Her kinfolk were some of the best human warriors in the universe. They refused to align with the Humanoid Alliance, declaring themselves neutral. The Humanoid Alliance attacked them, killing almost every being on Second Buoir.
Why would the Humanoid Alliance kill warriors who were openly neutral?
They were sending a message to every other human in the universe. If the humans didn’t join the Humanoid Alliance, they would be viewed as enemies, beings to be eliminated.
The Humanoid Alliance didn’t start out as large and powerful as they are now in the cyborg series. They had to consolidate the populations of humans on the various planets before attacking other species. They also had to quash insurrection within their ranks.
Any civilian humans who didn’t join with the Humanoid Alliance discretely ‘vanished.’ Resisting warriors, such as the humans on Astrid’s planet, were deemed hostile and openly killed. This put fear into all humans.
This also allowed other species to look the other way. The species could say there was no ‘proof’ civilian humans were disappearing. They could say the warrior humans had ‘deserved’ the repercussions.
The Humanoid Alliance grew, expanding their reach and increasing their power…until they pushed their cyborg ‘weapons’ too far.
