Part of Dark Fire is set in Mirage, a play place for the credit-heavy on Carinae E. It may seem strange that beings with the ability to go anywhere would choose a rough outlaw planet as a vacation spot.
I’ve visited some rough places on Earth and in every spot, there has been a fancy resort or some other property catering to the wealthy. Not-as-civilized places have different rules and often fewer of them. Things that might be illegal elsewhere (like the fights to the death featured on Carinae E) are tolerated. There’s also the appeal of roughing it, sort of like exotic camping.
It’s logical that outlaw planets like Carinae E would also attract the same sort of beings.
In Mirage, the high credit beings live in structures. These domiciles are fabricated with all of the devices and features a being could wish to have in a home. They are as individual as the beings living in them, pure luxury.
The poor, including our heroine Faylee, live in the caves. They can’t live in the open due to the brutal desert climate. The caves provide shade from the harsh sun.
I’ve seen that also while I was traveling. The poor construct makeshift homes in caves, the walls, floors and roofs provided by nature. There’s no sewage system so the smell is eye-watering and the refuse builds up. The garbage and other waste has nowhere to go.
It is merely subsistence living and Faylee dreams of a future outside the caves. She’ll do anything to make that dream a reality, even steal from a huge silver-scaled Dracheon warrior.

What the Beast wants, the Beast gets.
Dare’s savage nature has made him an outcast among his kind. The silver-scaled Dracheon warrior can’t control his inner beast. It’s too strong. When his primitive instincts told him his destined mate was on Carinae E, he had no choice. He had to travel to the outlaw planet. There, he hoped to meet a female powerful enough to survive his Drache.
He finds Faylee, a delicate little human.
Faylee is the best thief on the planet. Everyone she encounters mistakes her for a young boy…except for a tall, shiny warrior from off-planet. When she gazes into Dare’s flame-filled eyes, he makes her feel, for the first time, like a desirable female. The fire-breathing male has her yearning for hot kisses, fierce embraces, and a future filled with love. She doesn’t realize mating with him might be the last thing she ever does.
Dare’s beast isn’t the only danger on the planet. An enemy from the past has returned and he’s determined to stop Dare and Faylee…permanently. They’ll need luck and the assistance of every warrior in the Refuge to stay alive.
