This week I’m sharing the final scene of that first chapter.

***

“I would do anything to be part of this mission.” Dissent’s female frowned.

Dissent looked at Truth. The warrior didn’t want to quash his female’s ambitions.

And they had to be quashed, unfortunately.

“You can’t explore Nereid Negative One with us.” Truth extracted a straightening tool from a pack placed near the fighter ship. “But you can be part of the mission.” He held the tool out to Dissent’s female. “This is for you, Great Stunner of Beings.”

She clasped it. “Do you want me to hit you with this?”

“That’s tempting, but no, don’t hit me with it.” He grinned and handed Future a similar-shaped tool. “If we are to land on the planet without arousing suspicion, we should modify the fighter ship to look like it is in need of repairs.”

“You want us to rough up the fighter ship.”  Dissent’s female gazed at the vessel. “That feels wrong. It’s in perfect condition.”

“Cyborgs optimize functionality. They don’t reduce it.” Future was as hesitant to damage the fighter ship as Dissent’s female was.

“Being blown up reduces my functionality.” Truth grabbed a tool for himself.

He wasn’t hesitant…about anything.

The fighter ship had to be damaged. He wouldn’t pass up this rare opportunity to do so.

“Ayeeee.” He mimicked Victorious the Vanquisher’s battle cry and ran toward the vessel. Using a fraction of his strength, he whacked a side panel.

Metal rang against metal. A dent appeared in the previously smooth surface. Some of its shine dimmed.

He looked behind him, seeking his audience’s reaction.

Dissent’s female and Future gaped at him.

Dissent’s expression was blank.

A second demonstration was required. Truth clobbered a different part of the fighter ship and then another and another, transferring some of his frustration at planet rotations of inactivity onto the panels.

Dissent’s female was wrong. It didn’t feel wrong. It felt great.

She was the first being to join him. The little human tapped at a side panel tentatively and then glanced at him.

“If you don’t have the strength to damage the fighter ship, that’s regrettable, but I understand.” He teased her. “You’re a human.”

“Fuck that.” She beat the fighter ship with the straightening tool. “And fuck anyone who thinks I’m inferior.” The metal rang with the ferocity of her strikes. “Fuck those who question my strength.” Sweat beaded on her forehead. “Fuck beings who tell me what to do.”

“Yes. Fuck them.” Future didn’t moderate the power of his first blow. It would take a team of cyborgs to smooth out the dent he made. “Fuck those who don’t give me a chance.” The tool he wielded swung dangerously close to Truth’s head. “Fuck being stuck on this ship.”

Truth backed away from the fighter ship, watching Future and Dissent’s female as they beat the nuts and bolts out of the vessel. His frustration had been at minimal levels compared to theirs.

“I had a systematic plan for damaging the fighter ship, D Model.” Dissent crossed his arms in front of his chest. “This was not it.”

“This is a better plan, J Model.” Truth grinned at him. “Look at how happy they are.”

“Happy isn’t the word I’d use to describe them.” His friend’s tone was dry.

His female was pounding the shine off a side panel, cursing at it as though it were responsible for all the emotional damage in the universe.

One of Future’s strikes went wild, connecting with the landing gear. A piece of it fell off.

“We need that part if we hope to land the fighter ship.” Dissent glanced at Truth.

“We’ll repair it before we leave.” He was 89.5698 percent certain that was possible. “They’re a human and a cyborg offspring. How much damage can they do?”

The side panel Dissent’s female had been pummeling dropped to the floor.

Her warrior grunted.

Truth laughed, greatly entertained. “This is so much fun.”

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.
