Writing SciFi Erotic Romance Versus Writing Paranormal Erotic Romance

By Cynthia Sax on May 30, 2014

Some reading buddies have asked me why recently I’ve been writing SciFi erotic romances and not paranormal erotic romances.

SciFi and paranormal erotic romances are two very different types of stories.

SciFi (or Science Fiction) is based on science. In the Warlord series, the Chamele warriors can turn invisible. I had to figure out how that was possible based on the science we know. I referenced some of the unique animals (including, yes, the chameleon) we have on Earth to prove this.

Paranormal, in contrast, is based on myth. Vampires exist because…well… they exist. They’re part of our myths, our folklore, our stories, as are shapeshifters and dragons and other mythical beings.

One genre isn’t harder or easier to write than the other. They’re simply different.

However, there are currently much fewer SciFi erotic romances in Romanceland than there are Paranormal erotic romances. At Ellora’s Cave, there are 475 Futuristic and Science Fiction erotic romances (this includes Steampunk and Post Apocalyptic and other non-Science Fiction genres) compared to 1,186 Paranormal erotic romances.

There are also fewer writers interested in writing SciFi erotic romance. It is challenging to find someone interested in both writing and science. These two fields use very different parts of the brain.

I love reading and writing both SciFi and Paranormal erotic romance. I want both genres to be healthy, to last. So I’ve decided to write in the genre in most need of writers and fresh stories…for now. Tomorrow, that might change. (grins)

Interview With Shelly Bell

By Cynthia Sax on May 29, 2014

I sat down (virtually) with Shelly Bell for a short interview. Shelly Bell writes steamy erotic thrillers and her latest release is White Collared, a sexy contemporary serial.

Cynthia Sax: What excites you about White Collared?

Shelly Bell: Everything from the mystery to the romance to the characters excites me about my four-part serial, White Collared. Usually after I finish writing a book, I’m ready to move on, but not in this case. Kate Martin, the heroine, has gone through quite a bit of trauma in her young life, yet she hasn’t allowed it to stop her from achieving her dreams. She’s a fighter. Of course, she’s not perfect. Emotionally she hasn’t allowed anyone to get too close and she overmedicates herself with prescription drugs. But she’s brilliant, compassionate, and tough. That’s why I had to create a worthy hero and a challenging antagonist for her.

White Collared is not only a murder mystery, but it’s also a love triangle. The first three installments end on a cliffhanger both in terms of the romance and the suspense. I think it will keep the reader engaged from week to week wondering what will happen for the characters. That’s why I created a forum on my Facebook Author Page where readers can discuss the books and answer questions such as: Are you on #TeamJaxon or #TeamNick? Who do you think killed Alyssa Deveroux? What really happened to Kate’s father? I’ll be stopping by the forum to give special teasers of the next installment, so you won’t want to miss it!

Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for White Collared?

Shelly Bell: A few years ago, I had wanted to write about a law student, but since the age group fell between young adult and adult, I was told no publisher would acquire it. Of course, a year later, new adult exploded on the scene.

Then a local murder made national headlines. The husband allegedly hired a hit man to kill his wife because he was secretly a Sadist and Dominant. He allegedly wanted to leave her for his slave, but feared he’d lose his money if he asked for a divorce. Because of the success of Fifty Shades, the news reports focused on the BDSM angle and inferred that he killed her because he was a Dom and Sadist. Just because you’re a sadist doesn’t mean you’re a murderer. They knew nothing about the practice of BDSM and it infuriated me, so I decided to write a story about a murdered submissive, but from the perspective of a legal intern.

Cynthia Sax: What creates problems between Kate, Nicholas and Jaxon?

Shelly Bell: I didn’t make the romance easy on Kate. First of all, when the book opens, she has a boyfriend. But soon, two other men complicate her love life—Nicholas Trenton and Jaxon Deveroux. Aside from the love triangle, each of the men are forbidden. Nick is her boss and Jaxon is her client. Not to mention the men are best friends and one of them is suspected of murdering his wife! Kate has spent years working toward her goals and now that she’s close to reaching them, an affair with either her boss or her client could ruin her.

But the biggest conflict in White Collared is that everybody has a secret. The question is what happens when the secret is uncovered? Unfortunately for Kate, it always means danger.

Cynthia Sax: When did you first experience the orgasmic bliss known commercially as Nutella? (grins)

Shelly Bell:
I had the luxury of having my first encounter with Nutella in May of 1990. While my friends went on cruises for spring break, I went to France and Italy with my English teacher, his wife who taught French at another high school, and her students. Best. Decision. Ever. One night after visiting an art museum, we made our way into the courtyard where we were treated to a fireworks display and dessert. That’s when I ate a crepe stuffed with Nutella. I thought I’d died and gone to French heaven. I never forgot my special treat, but it wasn’t until my honeymoon when I returned to Italy with my husband that I got to indulge in it again. And indulge I did! Every morning I had coffee and a roll smothered with Nutella. Sadly, I gave up sugar five years ago, so I relinquish all future Nutella experiences to you.

Thank you, Shelly Bell, for joining us today!

The Future Of Blaine Technologies

By Cynthia Sax on May 28, 2014

My first five contemporary erotic romance releases (He Watches Me, He Touches Me, He Claims Me, Flashes Of Me, and Breaking All The Rules) were all set in Gabriel Blaine’s LA based company, Blaine Technologies.

There are many more interesting people living in this world and I’ve received some wonderful emails from reading buddies asking me if Michael or Miss Yen or other characters will receive stories also. Will we see Blaine and Anna again?

The answer is…

I don’t know.

Yeah, that’s a terrible answer, isn’t it? (sheepish grin)

I don’t have any immediate plans to write more stories set at Blaine Technologies. Sinful Rewards, my 12 novella serial releasing from Avon (the first story releases July 15th), is set in Chicago. I’ve already written the 8th story in this serial and Blaine hasn’t yet made an appearance.

This doesn’t mean he won’t show up. As my SciFi readers know, my worlds and series tend to collide (as they do in real life). I also have no control over my characters. If I tell a hero not to show up somewhere, that’s usually where he insists on going.

Blaine, being a billionaire, completes business all over the planet, including in Chicago. The world of the extremely wealthy is very small. Blaine definitely knows Nicolas, the billionaire in Sinful Rewards.

If there is an uber-wealthy function or event in Sinful Rewards, Blaine and Anna could be guests. (Man, oh, man, that would be awesome! I’d LOVE to listen to a conversation between Blaine and Nicolas.) But I can’t guarantee that there will be such an occasion.

I DO believe that lovers of the Blaine Technologies stories will enjoy Sinful Rewards.

Sinful Rewards 1

Belinda “Bee” Carter is a good girl; at least, that’s what she tells herself. And a good girl deserves a nice guy—just like the gorgeous and moody billionaire Nicolas Rainer. He is everything she wants in a man.

Or so she thinks, until she takes a look through her telescope and sees a naked, tattooed man on the balcony across the courtyard. Hawke is mysterious, the bad boy she knows will bring only heartbreak. He has been watching her, and that makes him all the more enticing.

But when a mysterious and anonymous text message dares her to do something bad, she must decide if she is really the good girl she has always claimed to be, or if she’s willing to risk everything for her secret fantasy of being watched.

Is her mystery man the reclusive billionaire with a wild side or the darkly dangerous bad boy?

Friends With Benefits

By Cynthia Sax on May 27, 2014

This weekend I watched Friends With Benefits, the Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake romantic comedy for about the gazillionth time. There are quite a few of f*ckbuddy romantic comedies and hands down, I think Friends With Benefits is the best of the bunch.

Why?

1. The extremely witty dialogue

Every time I watch Friends With Benefits, I pick up on some clever throw away lines. The mom telling Mila’s character that she didn’t want to twat block her. The jokes about liking Harry Potter not making you gay. The LA/New York jokes.

There are one time jokes and then there are jokes that repeat throughout the movie. Every time they get on a plane, there’s a different discussion about planes flying themselves. There are Guess My Daddy jokes with Mila’s mom. They make math jokes, referencing Justin’s character’s issues with math.

Which leads to the next why…

2. The characters are full

They’re not perfect. They, in fact, have very serious issues and they also have a past, a childhood, family, small imperfections like Justin’s character being unable to do math. They feel real yet are larger than life, more witty than any of us can ever aspire to be. Their relationship issues are very consistent, connected (they deal with similar issues in very different ways), and I could see how they are the only people able to help each other.

I believe that their love will last and I feel the chemistry between them. Mila and Justin look and act like a couple, as though they enjoy being with each other, are having fun together.

3. They change

Neither character is the same at the end of the movie. At first, they have a relationship based on sex without emotional support. Then they enjoy a relationship with emotional support and no sex. Finally, they’re able to tackle both at the same time, something they wouldn’t have been able to do at the beginning of the movie.

Have you watched Friends With Benefits? What was your favorite line?

Siblings In Romance – Alien Tryst

By Cynthia Sax on May 26, 2014

One of the challenges with writing erotic romance novellas and short stories is ensuring reading buddies know the hero and heroine (or more in the case of a ménage) will have a lasting happy ever after.

I believe that a hero or heroine who has a healthy relationship with friends or family members is more likely to have a healthy lasting relationship with his or her love interest. This is a reason why siblings can be very important in a romance.

In Alien Tryst, Eshe, the heroine, has a close relationship with her brother Raff. Raff is a military being, an alien warrior, so it isn’t surprising to me that Eshe’s mate is also a military being. She understands how military males think and act, what they believe in, what they expect from others.

Eshe has also learned, from her relationship with her devilish brother, that she can love someone and not agree with him all the time. Eshe and Raff argue about almost everything. They’re two very different people who happen to be related and love each other.

Eshe has learned how to fight without permanently hurting the other person. She knows what she can tease Raff about (his hair) and what he’s more sensitive about (his ability to protect others including herself).

Our intelligent heroine knows men aren’t perfect and she doesn’t expect perfection from Kane. He has faults (like not trusting easily) that she accepts and learns to work around.

Most important of all, in my opinion, she realizes that relationships are hard work. No relationship is easy peasy. I have an absolutely wonderful hubby who makes me laugh every single day but we work on our relationship constantly. Simply finding time to spend together can be a challenge.

Having a brother makes Eshe a better person and a better candidate for lasting love. Have your siblings taught you anything about relationships?

While investigating some mysterious disappearances, Kane uncovers two secrets that change his world. He’s not entirely human. He’s also dangerously close to death. His alien grandfather has broken a sacred rule, putting his entire bloodline, including Kane, at risk of termination.

Eshe, a sexy blonde scientist with lush lips and a hot body, is Kane’s only hope to save his family. He’ll do anything to keep her safe, including fighting alien warriors, crossing vast galaxies and giving his woman the pleasure she craves again and again, using every inch of his fit physique.

In this world, passion is power and love is necessary for survival.
