The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched this goat calmly walk down a sheer wall of rock. We’ve seen similar goats descend perfectly intact brick walls.
Those feats seem impossible…to us, humans. Yet they occur.
There is an explanation for why goats need very little to stand on (their hoofs are the main reason).
Writers have to provide that explanation, preferably in as few words as possible, or readers won’t be happy with our stories. Everything has to be plausible or has be explained. Even the magic in fantasy novels is based on ‘logical’ systems.
That is part of the fun. (grins)

Muse Food – The Perfect Chocolate-Covered Strawberry
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were treated to a selection of delicious chocolate-covered strawberries.
They were different sizes. Some were tiny. Some were average sized. Some were HUGE.
And there was a reason they were supplied in different sizes.
Every size of chocolate-covered strawberry is the favorite of someone out there in the universe. There are people who prefer the tiny ones. There are people who prefer the expected size. And there are people who prefer the huge ones.
I remind myself of that when I write a story. For someone out there, it will be the perfect ‘strawberry.’ (grins)

Does Writing Get Easier?
I’m often asked by newer writers if writing stories gets easier.
The brutal answer to that question is…
No. It doesn’t get easier.
Especially if we’re pushing ourselves as writers.
There’s always a new story challenge. There’s always research to complete. Every story is different and comes with its own unique issues.
There’s also the added challenge of ensuring our characters and plots and scenes are unique after having we’ve written a few hundred stories.
Stars. Ensuring sex scenes or battle scenes are unique and special is brutally difficult. I’ve written at least 1,000 sex scenes. I could produce a Kama Sutra-style collection of all the sex scenes I’ve written. You want fun with pineapples? I’ve written a scene like that. (laughs)
Anyhoo…writing is the best job in the world but it doesn’t get any easier.

Muse Food – Pointers
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this statue of General Vicente Guerrero Saldana in Huatulco, Mexico. And the first thing we both did was look in the direction the General was pointing.
In our stories, we have characters, actions, sentences that do this also. They point reading buddies in the direction they should be looking or thinking or, often in the case of Romance, feeling.

Muse Food – The Next Generation
It is Spring in my part of the universe. And during this time of the year, I think about babies – baby bunnies, baby birds, baby plants, all sorts of babies. (smiles)
Seeing babies of any type makes me happy. It shows me that life continues. There is hope. There are beings being born who will look at this wonderful planet with wonder and awe.
Adding babies of any type to a story does the same thing. They are symbols of hope and they WILL impact a reader’s mood. Add them intentionally.

Muse Food – Vultures And Harbingers Of Death
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted QUITE a few vultures when we were trekking around Panama City.
We joked that they knew something we didn’t. And that something we were referring to was…death.
Vultures, in many societies, are considered harbingers of death. Likely because they often feast on dead things. They provide a valuable service to their environments and are essential for healthy surroundings. But many humans see them and think…death.
Mentioning a vulture in the distance in a scene will cause many readers to do the same. They will be expecting a death. As they will expect a death if a pale horse or a long black vehicle or a being in a black hooded cloak is mentioned. We can warn readers so they can subconsciously brace themselves for that event and it isn’t as much of a shock to them.

Writing Every Day And The Need For Downtime
As writers, we often hear comments like ‘write every day’ or ‘you don’t need breaks if you love what you do.’
That advice might work for a few writers but it certainly doesn’t work for me.
I usually take a few weeks off fresh writing after finishing the submission draft of a story. I do this because drafts 2 and 3 of a story are very intense for me.
Focusing on the many threads, the character growths, the details is all I do during that time. I don’t read other people’s awesome novels. I don’t watch TV. I don’t go out with friends. Heck, I barely speak to my poor Dear Wonderful Hubby. (grins) The only thing in my head is the story.
So when I send the story to my Awesome Editor, I’m physically and emotionally drained. I need sleep. A lot of it. I need outside stimulus. I need to reconnect to the world.
And I need to purge my brain of the world I created in the story. I can’t think of the next story while I’m still living in the previous story.
This is what works for me. Every writer is different and has different needs. But don’t ever feel guilty about not writing everyday. Many of us take breaks.

Muse Food – Dangers In The Dark
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I encountered this opened maintenance hole in the middle of a walking path in Huatulco, Mexico.
There was a series of them. And none of them were marked.
We were fortunate because it was the middle of the day. The path was lit by sunshine. And we were moving slow.
If it had been night, we likely would have fallen into one of the holes. (There were no lights near the path.)
The time of day in our stories makes a difference. Darkness increases the perception of danger and makes the story a little bit scarier. A strong midday sun does the opposite.
Consider this when writing your stories.

Muse Food – Bullfighting Rings And Auditoriums
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I saw this beautiful auditorium in Cartagena, Colombia.
It was once a bullfighting ring. You can see parts of that bullfighting ring in its design.
I remember that when I’m world building. Unless the planet was created a heartbeat ago, everything builds on something previously there.
The earth’s surface, for example, consists of layers of sediment placed there over time. Everything that’s left on the surface is eventually built or covered over. We are literally standing on the past.

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.
She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.
Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

Muse Food – Popsicles, Bees And Which Parts Of The World To Show
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were sharing a popsicle or paleta in Huatulco, Mexico. It was hot. The popsicle was melting faster than we could devour it. And drops of sugary liquid were falling to the ground.
That attracted the bees.
We watched them return to the drips again and again until all the liquid had evaporated.
Every action in our stories creates a gazillion ripples in our worlds. We can’t show all of them on page. We have to choose.
I chose in this post to talk about the ripple involving the bees.
I could have chosen to talk about the little girl who saw our popsicle and tried to convince her guardian to buy her a popsicle also.
I could have chosen to talk about the old man who scowled and muttered at us because we were sticky and laughing and acting foolish.
I could have chosen to talk about the helpful person who sold us the popsicle and the adventures we had navigating our different languages.
I could have chosen the numerous other stories that happened because we got a popsicle.
I made a choice. And we have to make similar choices while writing our longer stories. That is part of the fun. (grins)
