Muse Food – Creating Interesting Followers
We, writers, often talk about different types of leaders and different leadership skills. We strive to make these often main characters unique and interesting.
But leaders usually need followers. And there are as many types of followers are there are types of leaders.
The follower who follows commands badly is one of my favorite types. (grins)
I asked the Dear Wonderful Hubby to take a photo of an interesting bird.
THIS is the first photo he took. (laughs and shakes my head) He is such an agent of chaos.
He DID take additional photos showing the front of the bird but some people wouldn’t do that. They would feel they had followed instructions with this first photo.
And they HAD followed instructions. They had just followed the instructions badly.
Make your fictional followers as unique as your fictional leaders. And have some fun with their characters!

Muse Food – The Mist
Misty days kickstart my muse.
Look at this crane the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted on a misty day in Lima, Peru.
It could be an alien probe originating from a spaceship hovering overhead. That vessel is completely concealed by the mist.
Or it could be a giant robot with its arms outstretched.
Or it could be a number of other things or beings.
The mist partially conceals and warps shapes, making them appear otherworldly and different.
That’s very inspirational. (grins)

Muse Food – Playing With Scale
The Dear Wonderful Hubby, when he returned from one of his many business trips, showed me this photo of cooking utensils.
I didn’t see anything special about it.
Then he told me the utensils were HUGE. They were roughly the length of my legs. They looked like they had been designed for giants.
Playing with scale or with the size of objects, beings, plants, other things is an easy way to create alien planets. The alien planet is like Earth except the trees are the size of our thumbs or the dandelions are the size of mountains or the aliens’ fingers are the length of their arms or…

Muse Food – Tentacle Flowers From Space
I LOVE how the wonders of our natural world here on Earth sport vastly different shapes and colors. That inspires many of the alien lifeforms I write about.
Plants are so very varied in shapes and colors. They never cease to amaze me.
Look at these gorgeous tentacle-like orchids with the variety of pink patterns on their blossoms. They resemble alien spiders, ready to scurry away at any moment.
These yellow orchids, while also being tentacle-like, have slightly different shapes and very different colors and patterns.

Muse Food – The Smallest Details
I tend to write three drafts of a story before I submit it to my Awesome Editor.
During the first draft, I scramble to write down all the broad components, the action, the key dialogue, the huge shifts in the characters’ thinking. There is sh*t in the first draft I won’t need in the final draft. There is sh*t that is missing. But the core story is there.
In the second draft, I add the details, smooth out the transitions, infuse the story with emotion.
Because the emotion is in the details. That is what makes the story live and breathe. The details allow us to fully picture the scene, to immerse ourselves in the story.
I think of it like this photo taken in Martinique. The first draft, the core story, is the pathway. But the aspect that makes it live for us is the mosaic trim, the colors, those details.

Muse Food – Moose
I grew up around moose so it likely isn’t a surprise I write stories set on alien planets. Moose are alien looking creatures. (grins)
They’re HUGE. That vending machine in the background of this photo of a preserved moose in Wawa, Ontario, Canada? It is full size.
If a car hits a moose, the car is totalled and the driver is likely dead. Shotgun (riding in the passenger seat) is a serious role up north. The number one task of every shotgun person is looking for moose.
Moose are also the top of the food chain, even though they eat vegetation. Nothing messes with a full grown healthy moose and that includes bears.
Moose don’t know fear. They’re armed with a solid set of antlers, long legs and deadly hooves. AND they know how to use them.
I find moose…inspiring. And I have a healthy respect for them.

Over Torque
The safest place in the universe is in a cyborg’s arms.
Ceridwen has arranged transport for her and her cat on a freighter. They hope to find a new start and sanctuary on a distant planet.
That dream is blasted to bits when the Humanoid Alliance attacks the ship.

Muse Food – Woolly Bears
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this little guy in our back yard.
He’s a woolly bear caterpillar, the larval form of the isabella tiger moth, and he’s a fascinating creature.
He hatches from his egg in the fall.
Then, when winter and the snow comes, he freezes solid. His heart stops beating. His guts freeze. His blood freezes. And finally the rest of his body freezes.
In the spring, he thaws and goes about his usual business. (grins)
Yes, he’s proof beings can be completely frozen and survive. That doesn’t merely happen in SciFi Romances.
Oh, and yes, I am heartbreakingly aware climate change is going to make it very difficult for the woolly bears to survive. These warm temperatures aren’t good for these little creatures.

Muse Food – Chess And Other Strategy Games
Battle scenes and love scenes are very similar. They are often constructed with an action, followed by a physical reaction and usually an emotional reaction.
Something like…
He strokes her chest. She arches her back. Desire sweeps through her.
or
She swings her sword. He blocks the blow. Excitement courses through his circuits.
It reminds me of a game of chess. There’s a move. Then there’s a countermove.
When I’m stuck in a scene, I often jot down a random action and then I think how the other beings in that scene would react to it. That often gets my creativity flowing.

Muse Food – Travelers
Many beings in my Cyborg Romances are undergoing huge shifts in their lifespans. Often, they are not only undergoing emotional changes but they are also undergoing changes in physical location. They are relocating. They are escaping from a planet under siege or searching the universe for a place where they belong or leaving their birth planets for some other reason.
Sometimes when I’m looking for inspiration for these stories, I trek to an airport or bus terminal or pier, places where people are constantly arriving and departing.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this monument in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and we had a good chuckle. It is supposed to depict the hardship of immigrants having to leave their families temporarily behind as they search for new homes. But the guy looks so dang eager to leave. (grins) He’s outta there!
This sculpture was situated near the first one. This man isn’t trying to hide his glee. (grins)

Muse Food – Making The Turn
I can envision a spaceship chase along this river’s path. When they make this turn, the tips of their vessels skim against the rock, leaving grooves, setting off sparks.
Maybe the enemy doesn’t slow and they crash into the wall of stone. The debris floats down the river to be picked up by metal salvagers.
The locals watch and shake their heads. “Humans,” they mutter. “Always in a rush.”
