Writing SciFi Erotic Romance Versus Writing Paranormal Erotic Romance
Some reading buddies have asked me why recently I’ve been writing SciFi erotic romances and not paranormal erotic romances.
SciFi and paranormal erotic romances are two very different types of stories.
SciFi (or Science Fiction) is based on science. In the Warlord series, the Chamele warriors can turn invisible. I had to figure out how that was possible based on the science we know. I referenced some of the unique animals (including, yes, the chameleon) we have on Earth to prove this.
Paranormal, in contrast, is based on myth. Vampires exist because…well… they exist. They’re part of our myths, our folklore, our stories, as are shapeshifters and dragons and other mythical beings.
One genre isn’t harder or easier to write than the other. They’re simply different.
However, there are currently much fewer SciFi erotic romances in Romanceland than there are Paranormal erotic romances. At Ellora’s Cave, there are 475 Futuristic and Science Fiction erotic romances (this includes Steampunk and Post Apocalyptic and other non-Science Fiction genres) compared to 1,186 Paranormal erotic romances.
There are also fewer writers interested in writing SciFi erotic romance. It is challenging to find someone interested in both writing and science. These two fields use very different parts of the brain.
I love reading and writing both SciFi and Paranormal erotic romance. I want both genres to be healthy, to last. So I’ve decided to write in the genre in most need of writers and fresh stories…for now. Tomorrow, that might change. (grins)
While investigating some mysterious disappearances, Kane uncovers two secrets that change his world. He’s not entirely human. He’s also dangerously close to death. His alien grandfather has broken a sacred rule, putting his entire bloodline, including Kane, at risk of termination.
Eshe, a sexy blonde scientist with lush lips and a hot body, is Kane’s only hope to save his family. He’ll do anything to keep her safe, including fighting alien warriors, crossing vast galaxies and giving his woman the pleasure she craves again and again, using every inch of his fit physique.

Siblings In Romance – Alien Tryst
One of the challenges with writing erotic romance novellas and short stories is ensuring reading buddies know the hero and heroine (or more in the case of a ménage) will have a lasting happy ever after.
I believe that a hero or heroine who has a healthy relationship with friends or family members is more likely to have a healthy lasting relationship with his or her love interest. This is a reason why siblings can be very important in a romance.
In Alien Tryst, Eshe, the heroine, has a close relationship with her brother Raff. Raff is a military being, an alien warrior, so it isn’t surprising to me that Eshe’s mate is also a military being. She understands how military males think and act, what they believe in, what they expect from others.
Eshe has also learned, from her relationship with her devilish brother, that she can love someone and not agree with him all the time. Eshe and Raff argue about almost everything. They’re two very different people who happen to be related and love each other.
Eshe has learned how to fight without permanently hurting the other person. She knows what she can tease Raff about (his hair) and what he’s more sensitive about (his ability to protect others including herself).
Our intelligent heroine knows men aren’t perfect and she doesn’t expect perfection from Kane. He has faults (like not trusting easily) that she accepts and learns to work around.
Most important of all, in my opinion, she realizes that relationships are hard work. No relationship is easy peasy. I have an absolutely wonderful hubby who makes me laugh every single day but we work on our relationship constantly. Simply finding time to spend together can be a challenge.
Having a brother makes Eshe a better person and a better candidate for lasting love. Have your siblings taught you anything about relationships?
While investigating some mysterious disappearances, Kane uncovers two secrets that change his world. He’s not entirely human. He’s also dangerously close to death. His alien grandfather has broken a sacred rule, putting his entire bloodline, including Kane, at risk of termination.

Why I Love To Write Both SciFi And Contemporary Erotic Romance
Recently, I’ve been concentrating on two genres within erotic romance—contemporary and SciFi (I previously also wrote paranormal). This might seem like a strange combination as they are very different stories to tell and require different skills to tell them.
It might also seem easier to simply write in one genre, concentrating on these reading buddies and these stories. Switching genres can be challenging and it takes time.
But it is also needed, at least, for me.
Contemporary erotic romance is probably my most natural genre (especially as I write in first person for contemporary). It uses the same skills at observation I honed while writing for newspapers. I look, I interpret (because no two people ever see the same thing), and I write.
Contemporary erotic romances flow quickly (why I can meet my aggressive self-imposed deadlines for Sinful Rewards, the 12 novella serial from Avon). They are usually my most layered stories. Because the world building is lighter, I can weave in a lot of symbolism and motifs. I LOVE this.
However, if I stay too long in contemporary erotic romance, I start to go a bit crazy. I get a hankering to write the weird, the strange, the unusual, stories and heroes unlike any I’ve ever written. I want to design complex worlds, to use my love of science, of systems, to get out of my own reality and into a fantasy world.
Writing SciFi erotic romance is almost like a vacation for my writing brain. My SciFi characters see and do things I can’t. I also have total control. Everything that appears in my SciFi worlds is there because I put it there. I’m truly the master of my universes! (grins)
After having this SciFi erotic romance holiday, I usually can’t wait to write another contemporary erotic romance. I’m wound up, refreshed, hyper to get started (no Nutella needed).
This is why I wrote Alien Tryst and Tryst Denied between Breaking All The Rules and Sinful Rewards. This is why I’ll write my gargoyles in space story (huge rock men) after I finish Sinful Rewards. Writing a SciFi erotic romance allows me to write a fresher, more exciting contemporary erotic romance and vice versa.
Sinful Rewards 1
Cynthia Sax
Belinda “Bee” Carter is a good girl; at least, that’s what she tells herself. And a good girl deserves a nice guy—just like the gorgeous and moody billionaire Nicolas Rainer. He is everything she wants in a man.
Or so she thinks, until she takes a look through her telescope and sees a naked, tattooed man on the balcony across the courtyard. Hawke is mysterious, the bad boy she knows will bring only heartbreak. He has been watching her, and that makes him all the more enticing.
But when a mysterious and anonymous text message dares her to do something bad, she must decide if she is really the good girl she has always claimed to be, or if she’s willing to risk everything for her secret fantasy of being watched.
Is her mystery man the reclusive billionaire with a wild side or the darkly dangerous bad boy?

World Building In SciFi Erotic Romance – Alien Tryst
One of the fun aspects of writing SciFi erotic romance is the world building. Writers create species of aliens, entire planets, ships. We decide how planets are governed, what values the society has, what our out-of-this-world characters eat, even how they use the bathroom. (grins)
There are thousands of seemingly minute decisions. When two characters meet, do they shake hands, bump elbows or rub their stomachs? Do they stare directly into the other’s eyes or look down or glance over the right shoulder? Do they have an expected greeting, an expected response? Who offers this greeting first? All of this should make sense for the world.
Alien Tryst is set on Earth in present day but this doesn’t mean there aren’t decisions to be made, a world to build. The Orogones are aliens on Earth. How do they remain undetected? What are they doing here? What technology do they have? The questions are endless.
Eshe is the heroine and her job is to figure out how to transfer humans. One of the aspects of this world that my editor and I spent a lot of time on was why Orogones could be transferred but humans could not.
An Orogone has two souls. Souls are scrambled when transferred. By having two souls, one soul can be bumped ahead in space, the genetic information becoming partially scrambled. The other soul lags, maintaining the genetic information. This genetic information is passed from the lagging soul to the other, before the lagging soul is transferred.
Humans only have one soul. When transferred, their genetic information is scrambled and they arrive on the new planet temporarily alive but… well… scrambled. Their left foot could be attached to their shoulder. Their left ear could appear on their belly.
To prove that this space travel could be feasible, we looked at science experiments, especially in quantum theory. Don’t worry. None of this appears in the story. I believe we summed up the why in one easy-to-grasp sentence. But it was important that WE knew the details because this changed other aspects in the world.
Yes, even a SciFi erotic romance set on Earth can provide world building fun. (grins)

How To Write Aliens Readers Fall In Love With
Romance is all about emotion. In order for readers to feel emotion, we have to care about characters. This caring is more easily established when we have something in common with the characters.
So what do we have in common with aliens?
Aliens often look different (have multiple body parts – big grin). They might have different abilities (SUPER alien sex), different languages, different customs, different technology. They come from different worlds, have different politics, values, etc.
These differences are so interesting and exciting that many writers, myself included, are tempted to spend the first few pages detailing what makes our aliens so… well… alien. If we do this, we’ll lose our readers. They’ll put down our stories because they won’t care about these aliens.
Instead, I like to start my stories with what makes my aliens human. In Alien Tryst, Eshe and Raff, two alien siblings, squabble as human siblings do. Raff is strutting around Eshe’s laboratory, telling her how super awesome he is. She’s rolling her eyes and making fun of his hair. I thread in the alien aspects but the core scene is very relatable.
The internal goal, motivation, and conflict for the character should be human also.
The external goal can be different and alien and unique to our specific world. In Alien Tryst, Eshe’s external goal is to finalize the transferring process for humans so humans can visit her planet. That’s a very SciFi, alien-type of external goal.
Eshe’s internal goal, however, is to be accepted, to belong somewhere or with someone. That’s a very human goal. Don’t we all want to belong? We can relate to this goal, cheer for her. We’re sad when it appears as though she won’t reach it and happy when she eventually does (it’s a romance – grins – we know she’ll belong with at least one being).
It is also easier for us to relate to beings with similar emotions. Our aliens might show these emotions in different ways or call the emotions different things (or not have a word for this unusual love emotion) but what they truly feel is the same. For example: if a friend dies, we expect the alien to be sad. We have an emotional bond with the alien.
In other words, for us to care about alien characters, at the core, they should be similar to us.
How do you create aliens readers care about?

Inspired By…
Almost every story is inspired by another story. Our personal histories, including our reading histories, influence who we are and what we write. My idea of what a erotic romance is has been shaped by the erotic romances I’ve read in the past.
I’ve watched A LOT of SciFi movies and TV shows. A LOT. Even if I’m not consciously thinking of a movie or TV show while I’m writing a story, I can usually find similarities to a classic as I read the first draft.
The Mission Menage series (Mission Menage, Savage Menage, Unleashed Menage, Assassin Mine, Menage Lost) reveals my fixation with Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. My androids aren’t like Data but they ARE androids (and as sexy – grins).
The Moonbeam series (Lust by Moonbeam, Ravished by Moonbeam, Exposed by Moonbeam, Passionate by Moonbeam) is a nod to the Predator movies. The heroes have ridges, natural armor! That’s the only similarity but it is notable (because they are RIDGES! LOL).
The heroes of the Warlords series (Warlord’s Bounty, Warlord Unarmed, Warlord Reunited, Warlord’s Mercy) have that Riddick animalism. The clones are a tribute to Star Wars and Gattaca. I love the concept of cloning and the possibilities cloning might create for a fated to mate species.
The Tattooed Tryst series (Tattooed Tryst, Alien Tryst, Tryst Denied releasing in June) is inspired by Men In Black. What if there were beings policing the aliens visiting Earth? In my stories, these beings are aliens, not humans. They police alien travel on many planets, taking the form of the native species (because morphing is also freakin’ cool).
I’m currently working on a new SciFi erotic romance series and I can already see some similarities to another SciFi movie. (grins) That’s both a curse and a blessing. Being a super fan of the genre, I know I can’t write anything truly original. Something in my story will remind me of something in a movie or show (when I blow up a world, I always have a death star moment). But I’m also paying homage to the great SciFi world builders I admire.

Why Reading Buddies ROCK
I’m at Wicked Readings By Tawania today, talking about Alien Tryst and why reading buddies are SO important!
http://wickedreadingsbytawania.blogspot.ca/2014/05/new-release-spotlight-guest-post-alien.html
Here is a snippet…
I had always planned to write a trilogy around Tattooed Tryst. I knew I wanted to write Raff’s story and Raff is such an overprotective brother, he wouldn’t feel right about leaving his sister, not unless his sister had someone of her own.
But one of the challenges writers have is a surplus of ideas. All of these ideas battle for attention. I have a list of my top 100 story premises. Premises are added and dropped from this list weekly, sometimes daily.
That’s why our reading buddies are so important. You remind us about stories we should be writing, stories you’re waiting for.
While investigating some mysterious disappearances, Kane uncovers two secrets that change his world. He’s not entirely human. He’s also dangerously close to death. His alien grandfather has broken a sacred rule, putting his entire bloodline, including Kane, at risk of termination.

Chapter One
“Officer Clark,” Danielle murmured into the handset. She dimmed the headlights and slowed the police cruiser, inching the vehicle quietly along the gravel road.
“10-20, Officer Danielle?” Her friend and fellow officer asked her location.
“Moonbeam Side Road.” Street address of one highly suspicious manwhore. She hunched over the steering wheel, staring into the darkness with grim determination. No more women will disappear on my watch.
“Officer Danielle…” She heard the refusal in Clark’s voice.
“I know he’s up to something, Officer,” Danielle insisted. “As I knew your perp had a weapon,” she not-so-subtly reminded him.
“10-4, Officer Danielle.” Clark sighed, the radio crackling with static. “This makes us even. 10-18.”
He doesn’t believe me. No one does. She slammed the handset back into place. Yet all of the signs point to foul play.
A good soldier listens to her gut, her mother’s voice echoed in her mind. Danielle slid her right hand over her police uniform, fingering the reassuring outline of her dog tags.
A good soldier never cries. She whacked the window controls with her fist. Fresh air poured inside the vehicle, the night breeze cool and scented with pine needles, and her melancholy retreated.
Danielle stuck her head out the window and gazed up at the stars. One star, glowing as bright as the full moon, moved farther away from her.
Moved? She frowned. How—
The cruiser shuddered and she turned her head in time to see a large black-and-green object hit the windshield. The entity cracked the supposedly uncrackable glass, a spider web of fragments spanning out from the center of impact, and it rolled over the hood, leaving a trail of dents.
“Stay still.” She grabbed the first-aid kit stashed in the door pocket. “And remain calm.” Her heart pounded painfully as she dashed around the hood of the car, rock fragments crunching under her sturdy police boots. “I’m a police officer. I’ve been trained to deal with these situations.” Danielle stopped. Temporarily blinded by the headlights, she couldn’t see anything.
“Lejno.” The mumbled word originated from the brightness and she breathed a sigh of relief. He lives.
With a rumbling groan, the owner of the deep, sexy voice staggered to his feet. He rolled back his green-and-black shoulders, his joints popping in a barrage of rapid-fire cracks. Danielle’s mouth dropped open and the first-aid kit fell with a thump onto the gravel road. Every inch of her accident victim was green or black.
He loomed over her, his huge, colorful body covered with ridges from the top of his bald skull down to the waistband of his black leather outfit. She tilted her head back to meet his swirling gaze.
“You’re not human.” Her fingers shook as she fumbled for her gun. “At least, not like any human I’ve ever seen. What are you?”
“I am Warrior Krol Nowak.” He extended his hands. Long silver blades protruded from his wrist armor.
Danger. Danielle stepped back, fear twisting her stomach. “Don’t move, Warrior Krol.” She raised her gun and aimed it between his constantly moving eyes. “And put your arms in the air.”
His forehead ridges rattled as they condensed. “Your two commands are incompatible, druzka.” He stalked toward her, his form large and menacing.
Sweat trickled down Danielle’s neck. Space guns were strapped to his muscular torso and daggers decorated his tight leather pants. She held a simple service revolver. “I repeat. Don’t move, or I’ll shoot.”
Krol grinned, displaying teeth too sharp and pointed to be human. “You are a warrior, my Danielle. I am the best warrior.”
She swallowed hard, her mouth dry with fear. “How do you know my—”
He sprang toward her, his movements blurring, and Danielle reacted on instinct, pulling the trigger. The bullet ricocheted off his knee ridge, the deafening sound followed by an animalistic howl. Krol twisted the gun from her hands, took three steps to the right and lobbed it with inhuman strength deep into the brush.
“I shot you.” Confused, Danielle glared at his leg. Red blood trickled down it, yet he remained standing. “I shot you.”
“Yes.” Krol retracted his wrist blades as he strode back to her. Gravel crunched under his big boots. “I am enjoying our courting.”
“Courting?” Danielle backed away from the approaching alien, discomforted by his size and anxiously aware she was woefully unarmed. A good soldier knows when to retreat.
In a flash of black and green, he captured her waist and pulled her forward, bumping her hips against his. The strength she’d always prided herself on paled next to his, his arms bulging with muscles and ridges.
“Courting,” he confirmed. His hypnotizing gaze dropped to her lips and Danielle sucked in her breath, excitement coiling within her. He isn’t thinking of…he’s an alien. He wouldn’t—
Krol covered her mouth with his, his hard lips pulverizing her soft flesh, grinding, conquering, owning. Danielle clenched her teeth, blocking his access to her mouth, and she struggled to free herself, pushing against his chest with her hands. He was hard, strong and male. Her body responded to his dominance, her nipples tightening and her pussy moistening.
Her spaceman growled, the primitive sound curling Danielle’s boot-covered toes. “Open.” He stroked her cheek with his calloused fingers, sending shivers of delight down her spine.
“No way. I’m not letting some alien inside me.” She raised her chin defiantly, her lips plump and throbbing with his hard usage.
Their gazes met and held, and a grin slowly spread across his face. Krol bobbed his head once as though acknowledging her challenge, and Danielle readied herself, bracing for impact. He attacked, bending down to recapture her mouth, his forceful kiss driving her head back.
She clung to him, teasing him with her body, dragging her nipples against his chest ridges as he probed the seam of her mouth with his surprisingly soft tongue. Danielle blocked each assault, pressing her lips tightly together, denying him entrance.
He pulled on her jaw and she dropped her chin, her lips slipping from his, running over the bone underneath his mouth. She licked his skin, flicking her tongue over his flesh, tasting salt and minerals, and she hungered for more, more Krol, more kisses.
He groaned. “Open for me, my Danielle.”
She laughed at his frustration, feeling desirable, powerful and in control. “Make me. You—”
Krol slapped her ass hard, the sound of skin hitting fabric echoing through the night air, and Danielle gasped, shock and arousal radiating from the point of impact. He was a monster, this alien, and he immediately filled her open mouth with his thick, soft tongue, plunging into her farther and farther, forcing her lips wider, insisting she take all of him.
Danielle grazed his flesh with her teeth, warning him back, yet he bravely, passionately pressed forward, utilizing his tongue like a weapon, whipping her cheeks and punishing her for her resistance. She surrendered completely to his greedy demands, clasping his shoulder ridges with her fingers, hanging on as he ravished her mouth.
Danielle pushed her hips into his groin, grinding her mons on the long, hard ridge in his leather pants. The ridge vibrated, triggering a corresponding hum within her, and she moaned into his mouth while dry humping him harder and faster.
The pain. The pleasure. I’m so close. So—
Krol pulled away from her, breaking their kiss, and Danielle swallowed her scream of frustration. “We will mate now.” He slid his fingers under the waistband of her police pants and yanked, tearing her leather belt in two.
The cool night breeze wafted upon her heated skin, reviving Danielle’s logic. What am I doing? He’s an alien, and perhaps the enemy.
“Wait.” She stepped back from him, her desire flowing to fear.
He stilled, staring at her, his forehead ridges raised in question. His eyes, more black than green, swirled quickly with passion.
Think, Danielle. She looked down the deserted road. The headlights of her police cruiser faded into darkness. She glanced up at the big, muscular alien. Moonlight reflected off his arsenal of weapons. Resting her hand on her empty gun holster, Danielle took a deep breath, held it to the count of ten and slowly released the air through her front teeth. A good soldier never shows fear.
She forced a seductive smile. “Do you want to fuck me, Warrior Krol?” Danielle dropped her voice to a husky whisper. Her space perp narrowed his eyes before nodding slowly. “Do you want to put this big alien cock,” she leaned forward and covered his groin with her trembling hand, “in my tight human pussy?”
He closed his eyes as she touched him. “I will fill you with my seed, my Danielle.” He was hard, so very hard, and his thick shaft pumped up and down like a vibrator, his broad cock head clearly outlined against his leather pants. Even knowing he could be the enemy, she wanted him, and her cheeks heated with shame.
Focus, Officer Danielle. He’s an alien.
She pulled a space gun out of Krol’s holster and pointed it at him. “In your dreams, big boy.” She smiled with satisfaction as his eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. “Don’t move or I’ll shoot.” She rested her thumb on a green button resembling a trigger. “And you know I mean it, so no—”
He fled, his body a flash of black and green under the moonlight. He was huge and alien and too heavily armed to be on a mission of peace. “Oh hell.” She chased him, her space gun in hand, her blood pumping with exhilaration.
He lumbered through the forest with the grace of a charging bull moose, snapping branches off the fir trees, pounding his boots on the needle-covered earth. She ran as fast as she could after him. Her lungs ached, her muscles strained and she felt alive, so very alive.
“You. Can’t. Escape. Me, Krol.” She caught a glimpse of movement, and darted in that direction.
His chuckle rolled through the air, mocking her, and then there was silence. She didn’t hear his footsteps, his breathing or any sound at all. She stopped and pivoted on her heels, squinting in the dark, cocking her head as she listened, the stillness disconcerting. The tiny hairs on the back of her neck rose and she raised her space gun, turning, turning, turning.
A branch snapped with a crack to her right and she shot, her fireball bullet burning holes through thick tree trunks as it blasted through the forest. The kickback was a bitch, the butt of the gun slamming into Danielle’s shoulder and throwing her off her feet. She landed with an oomph flat on her back.
“My Danielle.” The alien she hunted emerged from the darkness and crouched by her side. “Are you damaged?” Krol searched her skull with his fingers, looking for injury. He handled her as though she was fragile and soft. And as if she was unworthy of respect or love.
“Respect this.” She released years of resentment upon the alien, pistol-whipping him with the barrel of his own space gun.
