Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – January 1st
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful 2023!

I spent this past week with the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I didn’t do much fresh writing. There were some administrative end of year tasks to complete. Those always have to be done. (shakes head) And I slept. A lot. I dreamed of stories to come. It was AWESOME.
This week, I’ll start thinking about the first chapters of Strive For Forever. I’ll list everything my characters have told me thus far about themselves. I’ll likely rewrite the first scene a gazillion times, trying to find the right place to begin the story. (laughs) That seems to be my process.

Winter Gardening Update
The ground outside might be frozen but the grow station the Dear Wonderful Hubby set up for me in the basement is thriving. (smiles)
The cilantro is growing vigorously. I harvest a bit every day to put in soups and other dishes.
We have radishes! They are in different stages of growth. We harvest a couple every week as a treat.
The spinach is struggling a bit but there’s enough to give the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I one salad each every week…which is good because spinach, lettuce and other leafy greens are in short supply at neighborhood grocery stores.
The parsley seeds Awesome Mom-in-law found in her basement were duds. Nothing grew. I think they were a few decades old so that didn’t surprise me.
It is wonderful and a privilege to have veggies growing during the winter months. The grow station was one of the best presents the Dear Wonderful Hubby has given me. (smiles) He’s such a good person.

Woman Vs Female
One of the questions I receive quite often is…
Why do I use female instead of woman to describe heroines in my cyborg romances and my alien romances?
The reason I do this is because woman is a very human-centric word.
Here on Earth, we only call humans who identify as females women. We don’t call, for example, female cats women or female butterflies women.
The cyborg universe is inhabited by a variety of other species. Many of the warriors’ genetic matches aren’t human. Heck, CYBORGS aren’t human. They wouldn’t use a human-specific term like woman.
Female is more humanoid and other species friendly. (smiles)

Muse Food – Boxes And Other Containers
Since today is Boxing Day, I thought I’d talk about boxes and other containers.
We, humans, like to store things and I don’t think this will change in space. (grins) That means we need containers to facilitate this activity.
There are practical working containers like cardboard boxes or these plastic crates the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted in Costa Rica. They are meant for rough handling and everyday usage and they do that job well.
There are practical works of art like this 18th Century bottle from Turkey the Dear Wonderful Hubby spotted in the Dallas Museum of Art. This beautiful container is meant to be used for many, many generations.
And, of course, we also like to give gifts in containers. We spotted these larger-than-me brightly wrapped boxes in Antigua.
There are SO many different types of containers – purses, medic packs, storage boxes, etc. It would be unusual to read a story that didn’t mention at least one.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – December 24th
I’m posting the weekly update a day early due to the holidays. (smiles) Tomorrow is a sleep-in-late and laze-around-the-house type of day. I LOVE that.

Wherever you find joy, embrace it, my friends.
The world can be fairly dark. There are challenges all around us.
We need a counter to that darkness, a light to revive our souls.
If reading romance novels gives you joy, read romance novels. If watching holiday movies with similar plots grants you happiness, watch those movies. If wearing socks with penguins on them makes you smile, wear those socks.
If no one else understands why you love those things, that’s okay. They’re different people and they, hopefully, find happiness in things WE might not understand.

Muse Food – Decorating Trees And Taking Over The Universe
Symbols and traditions and words are powerful.
The easiest way for one group to quash the power of another group’s symbol or tradition or word is to shift its meaning or steal it for its own use.
Whenever I see a decorated tree, I’m reminded of this truth.
Pagan and other older religions decorated trees. Christians never did that until they encountered these other religions. The locals didn’t want to stop decorating trees so Christians shifted the meaning of that tree decorating to fit into their worldview.
Today, many people will become upset if the tree is called a Holiday Tree and not a Christmas Tree.
THAT is how effective this strategy is.
I suspect invading forces across the universe would use this same strategy to erase the locals’ religions, customs, traditions, words.
