“Should I open the wine?” I attempt to distract them.
“S’il vous plait,” Francois purrs, back to being his charming self.
I stare at him blankly. Is that a yes?
“You truly don’t know any French.” Nicolas’s eyes gleam. “Open the wine, Bee.”
“This is America.” I extract wineglasses from the kitchen cabinets. “I shouldn’t need to know any French.”
“You don’t know wine either.” Francois moves beside me. “This glass is correct.” He taps the stem of the glass with a wider opening and large bowl. “These two glasses are not.” He returns them to the cabinet and chooses two different glasses. “The wine I brought you is red.”
My face heats. I had no idea that different wines required different glasses.
This scene is tiny yet so meaningful. Bee has tried her best to fit into the world Nicolas and other wealthy people belong to but there is so much to learn and she misses the small details like which wine glass to use. She realizes that she won’t ever fully fit in. She’ll always be looked at as an outsider by some people.
She doesn’t fit fully into Hawke’s world either but the difference is that Hawke and his team are willing to teach her. They were all outsiders once, not having been born into the military, and they know what being an outsider is like.
Re: Wine glasses and wine
The shape of a wine glass DOES affect taste.
“It all comes down to two things — the area of our mouths that the wine hits first, and the amount of air exposure the wine gets before we drink it.
Because different areas of our mouths are sensitive to varying degrees of sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami tastes, the wine needs to hit the right part of your mouth first to taste good. That’s where a glass shaped specifically to target the area of the mouth that corresponds with the wine’s flavour profile comes in handy.
Secondly, the shape of the glass dictates the wine’s exposure to air — you may have noticed how red wine glasses are much wider than glasses designed for white wines. That’s because red wines are muskier and more aromatic, and therefore the smell of the wine — enhanced by the swirling of the large, bowl-like glass — plays as much a role in your enjoyment of the wine as the actual taste itself. On the contrary, white wine glasses are designed to be more narrow, which keeps the wine cooler for longer — key for proper flavour in whites.”
As Steven Kolpan, a professor and chair of wine studies at The Culinary Institute of America, notes “The difference can be so striking, in fact, that… I’ve seen people refuse to believe that they were tasting the same wine in different glasses.”

FAQs About My SciFi Erotic Romances
Q. Why do you call your stories SciFi Erotic Romances and not Science Fiction Erotic Romances? Is this because there’s no science behind your stories?
Cynthia Sax: My stories are all based in science. I might not explain, for example, how the doors on a ship work during a scene as that will pull readers out of a story but I know the science behind it. If you email me, I’ll happily answer any of your questions.
I call my stories SciFi erotic romance because the focus is on the romance, not on the science fiction. It is a romance first and foremost. IMHO… that should be the longer part of the subgenre name.
Q. Why are your alien heroes or heroines humanoid?
Cynthia Sax: As my stories are erotic romances, body parts should align and preferably there should be a possibility of offspring (for the continuation of the species). I’m a former farm girl. I know that two beings have to be VERY similar in DNA to create fertile offspring. A donkey and a horse might look similar but mules, their offspring, rarely reproduce.
I believe in a common origin, that humanoid aliens and humans have the same ancestors but then evolved to thrive on their respective planets. Many of the evolutionary differences are based on species on Earth. Chameles, in the Warlord series, can turn ‘invisible.’ This is based on, you guessed it, chameleons. Chameles aren’t truly invisible. They are perfectly color matched to their backgrounds.
Q. Why do your aliens often speak Earth languages?
Cynthia Sax: Since I believe that humanoid aliens and humans have a common origin, it makes sense to me that the variety of languages found on Earth represents the variety of languages spoken by humanoid aliens.
I also think learning another language spoken here on Earth is more helpful for reading buddies than learning a completely fabricated language (the exception being Klingon which, IMHO, should be taught in school).
Q. Why do the ‘isms (sexism, age-ism, species-ism, etc) still exist in your futuristic SciFi erotic romances? Shouldn’t we have evolved past that?
Cynthia Sax: Shouldn’t we have evolved past that today? We haven’t made much progress in eliminating bias. I suspect even if we banish some biases, we’ll develop others.
Q. What research do you do for your stories?
Cynthia Sax: My life is continual research. Before I wrote full time, my specialty was new business development. My job was to look at new developments and try to predict the next step. That’s exactly what writing science fiction is!
I specialized in new business development because I love it. I love reading about new developments, the exciting discoveries occurring every single day, in all sorts of fields. One of the reasons I waited to write about cyborgs was because I didn’t think growing cyborg warriors was possible… until now. I can see how some of the existing technology could evolve to create these hunky half man, half machine beings.
One of my favorite places to get ideas for stories is the Consumer Electronics Show in the U.S. (Vegas). I love talking with the product developers, discovering what they’re excited about.

Sinful Rewards 12 – Hawke’s New Tattoo
Here’s a snippet from Sinful Rewards 12
Ed takes a step away from us. “What do you think?”
Hawke bends over the small table. “That’s fine work.”
“It’s one of my best.” The artist beams.
“Let me see.” I wiggle in Hawke’s lap. He turns my palm upward and places his hand in mine. My breath catches. It can’t be. I close my eyes, count to five, open them.
It is.
Belinda is inked on the ring finger of his left hand, a band of letters declaring to the world that he belongs to me. “Hawke.” My eyes prick with unshed tears.
“She doesn’t hate it,” Ed observes.
“Hate it?” I carefully touch my military man’s fingertips, staring at my very visual claim on him. “I love it.” I love him. “You did this for me?”
Hawke nods. Of course he did this for me. That’s my name on his body.
Forever.
I tremble, unable to believe this, yet the proof is in front of me, permanent proof in vivid black ink. “It’s on your ring finger.” I glance at his face. He must know this. “People will think you’re married.”
“Good.” Hawke smiles. “Because in my heart, I am.” He brushes a strand of hair away from my face with his right hand. “You’re my girl. You will always be my girl.”
“You’re committed.” I gaze at his finger. A tattooed wedding band with my name on it is a commitment.
I don’t have a picture of Hawke’s tattoo but it looks something like this.
It isn’t truly a band because the tattoo doesn’t encircle Hawke’s finger completely. Why? Because the skin on the palm-side of the finger wears quickly and is less likely to take ink.
A tattooed ring is a great solution for people who don’t like to wear rings or people who can’t wear rings due to their jobs/hobbies (in many jobs, such as any around machinery, wearing a ring is dangerous).

“Everyone knows I’m your girl.”
“I want you to be more than that, love.” Hawke uncurls the fingers of his left hand, the finger tattooed with my name covered with white gauze, and he reveals a distinctive sapphire blue leather ring box with an HW etched on the top.
My breath catches. He bought the ring from Harry Winston, jeweler to the stars.
“I want you to be my wife.” Hawke opens the box, and the room spins merrily around me. There are diamonds, diamonds, and more diamonds, the sparkle almost blinding me. A massive round center stone is framed by diamonds and set on a diamond band. The stones are so closely set, I don’t see the precious metal.
“You like it.” His voice is husky.
“I love it.” I smile, light-headed.

I brush the brown tissue paper aside, revealing light blue tulle. My fingers tremble as I shake out the fabric. Clusters of pink and dark gray glitter embellish the Mary Katrantzou blouse. “This is so beautiful.” I hold it up to me. “And sheer.” I lift my eyebrows. “Your men will see everything.”
“It matches my eyes.” Hawke’s voice is husky.

Grey And Stories From Another Perspective
The big news in erotic romance this week was the announcement of the upcoming release of Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian. The original Fifty Shades was told completely from the heroine’s point of view. This story is a retelling from the hero’s point of view.
E.L. James isn’t the first writer to do this. Many romance writers who write in one point of view have published retellings in the other point of view (or, at least, have considered it). Some have been successful, attracting new readers, making their existing readers very happy. A few have seen the retelling out sell the original. Some have failed disastrously, upsetting their existing readers, perhaps losing them forever. This is a high risk project.
Why is it high risk?
Because with a retelling, the reader already knows the plot. We know exactly what will be done and what will be said and when all of this will happen. The only things we don’t know are (sometimes) the new point of view character’s thoughts and his (usually his) detailed history.
I say sometimes because often the original point of view characters will discover her love interest’s thoughts and history. In my contemporary erotic romance, Breaking All The Rules, the story is told through Camille’s eyes but readers learn quite a bit about Nate’s history and his thoughts. Retelling the story from his point of view wouldn’t provide the reader with much more information. The reader would be bored.
And I would be bored writing it. I’m a pantser. Part of the joy of writing for me is finding out what will happen next in my stories. With a ‘retold’ story, I know this. There’s no mystery. I also know what my hero is thinking, what his history is, what his biggest fears are. I might not put it on the page but I know all of this. I must in order to create a believable character.
There’s a reason I write my stories from a certain character’s (or multiple characters’) point of view. He Watches Me was originally written from both Anna’s and Blaine’s points of view. It didn’t work as a story. When I wrote it solely from Anna’s point of view, magic happened. Flashes of Me and Sinful Rewards wouldn’t work if I showed the hero’s point of view.
Will Grey work? I hope so. E.L. James and her editors clearly think it does. We’ll find out on June 18th.

The Magnificent Ball, in Sinful Rewards 11, is named after the Magnificent Mile, the stretch of high end clothing and jewelry stores found in Chicago. I always walk the mile whenever I’m in the city. I love to window shop and people watch there.
Ellen talks about fancy balls being “as boring as burning out four-holer heads.” Four-holer heads are four-seat bathrooms (or outhouses for us country folk). They’re burnt out once or twice a day to prevent maggots. This duty is often a punishment for military personnel (or anyone really).
