Some business buddies and I were discussing who we would want on our end of times/zombie/apocalypse survival team.
One buddy told me I’d be valuable due to my gardening skills.
I told him my romance writing background would add more value.
He laughed.
I was serious.
Romance writers do a LOT of research in a variety of subjects. To write well we have to know how a lot of things work…or break.
We might need to know, for example, WHY a car would break down, whether or not the type of engine a car has would make a difference, and if there’s a quick repair our heroines could complete using common objects she might have on her person or in her car.
As another example, I have taken dozens of workshops on poisonous plants in our backyards, how to identify them, and how to treat someone who has been impacted by those plants. That knowledge would be VERY handy to have if a brave group of people had to forage for food and they preferred not to die.
So yes, you want a romance writer on your survival team.
