The Movie 2012 And Missing Heroines

By on September 12, 2025

Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about the movie 2012 and it WILL contain spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this challenged disaster movie, you might wish to skip this post.

2012 was playing on the Roku Channel and I was in the mood for a disaster movie.

So I decided to rewatch it.

And I remembered why I didn’t like it.

Sure, there are some great disaster scenes. I love the Yellowstone scene and the West Coast of the US scenes. Those are awesome.

But the movie has SO MANY other problems.

One of the major ones is…

There is no heroine.

The female characters are purely decorative and they are VERY bad stereotypes. They play no part in the decision making. Heck, they aren’t even told what was going on. They are expected to follow the male characters’ commands without thought, like little dolls being moved around the scenes.

It is a reminder that just because a book has female characters doesn’t mean any of those female characters are heroines. Or have agency. Or are relatable at all.
