Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – March 20th

I thought this kitten looked adorably fed up with my sh*t. (grins) Look at that cute face!

Anyhoo… I’m still working on draft 2 of Provoking Odium, the first story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in June). I love Odium. I love his human female. I love how this story sets up other stories in the series yet still mentions past couples (and more).

I plan to hone Provoking Odium to submission status by April 1^st and then send it to my Awesome Editor for 3 or more rounds of revising. We’re on schedule. I can’t say everything is going exactly according to plan. (laughs) But this story is working and I love that.

Have an absolutely fantastic week, my friends. (big hugs) Today is the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Celebrate the new start. Try something different. Read a new-to-you author. Walk home a different way. Wear a different clothing combination. Do something a bit out of your usual routine.

The Color Of Vegetation On Alien Planets

I don’t spend a lot of time describing the alien worlds the cyborgs visit because…well…I could write a gazillion words about these worlds and my focus should be on what the cyborgs are doing rather than on their surroundings.

Often the trees and other vegetation on these planets aren’t green. This is unusual and not the way we often envision vegetation. But it is definitely biologically possible.

Non-green plants exist right here on Earth.

There are plants and trees that contain chlorophyll but whose other pigments cover up the green color.

For example, there are trees that sport red leaves (like the stunning Photinia ‘Red Robin’ – https://www.gardeningetc.com/us/advice/trees-with-red-leaves ), purple leaves (the beautiful Malus Pupurea ‘Crimson Cascade’ – https://www.gardeningetc.com/us/advice/trees-with-red-leaves ), blue leaves/needles (the magnificent blue spruce – https://easysucculents.com/blue-leaf-trees ) or yellow leaves ( the eye-catching Zlatia Golden Beech – https://www.backyardgardener.com/plantname/fagus-sylvatica-zlatia-golden-beech/ ) all year round.

There are also plants and plantlike forms that don’t contain chlorophyll, that feed off other sources of energy.

The plantlike form that always comes first to my mind is the mushroom. Mushrooms are available in a vast array of hues from red to blue to white and they feed off a variety of different sources from living trees to dead things.

The phantom or snow orchid is a ghostly white plant and has a symbiotic relationship with fungi ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cephalanthera_austiniae ).

Broomrape can be yellow, brown, purple, or white and they feed off other plants ( https://www.britannica.com/plant/broomrape ).

And we haven’t even started talking about the plants and plantlike forms found in our oceans! They bring unusual to an entirely different level. (grins)

If there’s a color you can imagine, there’s likely a plant or plantlike form here on Earth that sports it. Vegetation on alien worlds can be as colorful.

Cyborgs And Valkyries

Once, when he was forced to fight for the Humanoid Alliance, he had seen a Valkyrie in the distance on a battlefield. The female humanoid warriors were rare and famed for their fighting skills.

The Valkyrie he’d spotted had held bloodstained swords in both of her hands and wore a winged head covering and gold-colored body armor. She glowed as she killed her opponents, was jaw-droppingly splendid in her vengeance.

That was who his female reminded him of now—a Valkyrie, a warrior of near myth. And he worshipped her with his gaze, not seeking to hide his admiration.

Reading buddies have asked if a Valkyrie will appear in future stories.

Yes!

There will be a Valkyrie in the Cyborg Unity series. I feel this in my gut. And I suspect that story will involve a certain D Model Captain. He’s been waiting a long time for his genetic match.

I don’t know any more than that and I have four other core stories to tell first. But there WILL be a Valkyrie heroine in the future.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Strength

Today is St. Patrick’s Day! And since it is lucky to wear green on this day, I figure it is also lucky to read romances with green covers and/or with green heroes.

My favorite green hero whose story I’ve written is Balvan, the great green gatekeeper of the Refuge and the hero of Dark Strength. He isn’t exactly a gentle giant. (grins) Balvan is a warrior and he enjoys crunching skulls under his big boots. But he does love caring for wounded little creatures.

Elyce, the heroine, is definitely wounded and compared to Balvan, she’s little. (Anyone compared to Balvan is little.) She also deserves someone who will care for her and she finds that someone in the Refuge’s great green gatekeeper.

Dark Strength

The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall.

Balvan, the Refuge’s Gatekeeper, is huge, green, and has a reputation for crushing skulls. He’s a modified humanoid, genetically designed to be the ultimate warrior. One of a kind and considered monstrous by many, he never expects to find his mate, the one female meant for him.

Cyborgs And Beauty

A cyborg’s view of beauty isn’t the same as most humans’ views of beauty. Cyborgs tend to equate beauty with strength. Strength, like beauty, is expressed in a variety of ways.

Some cyborgs like to see strength. They marvel over scars, for example, because scars are visual proof a being has survived an intense situation.

Some cyborgs see strength in daring. A tiny human female not at all intimidated by them, a bigger being, might intrigue them. They value bravery.

Yet other cyborgs see strength in being skilled. That skill could be fighting or cooking or dancing. They process how difficult it is to become proficient in an area.

All of us are strong in at least one area. Heck, we’re alive. Living takes strength.

You’re beautiful and cyborgs see that beauty.

The Ides Of March

March 15th (today!) corresponds to the Ides of March in the Roman calendar. Ides were originally the dates of the full moons.

The Feast of Anna Perenna was celebrated on the Ides of March. Anna Perenna was the Roman goddess protecting the year. Romans made sacrifices to her, trying to ensure their year was favorable. (And yes, I’m thinking we might need her assistance this year. – grins – We need all the help we can get.)

The Ides of March, however, is most well-known (thanks to William Shakespeare) as being the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. He was told by a seer (a haruspex named Spurinna) to “Beware the Ides of March.” And that prediction came true. He was stabbed to death during a meeting of the Senate.

Haus Of Gaga – Warrior Outfits

The Haus of Gaga: Las Vegas exhibition (found in the Park MGM Casino in Vegas) is SO inspiring. The Dear Wonderful Hubby snapped a gazillion photos. I hope to use some of these shapes and pieces of these designs for garments in future stories.

My stars. Look at this! This Giorgio Armani outfit is my favorite.

It resembles a wire shell for a xenomorph from one of the Alien movies. There’s a black crystal-embellished catsuit underneath a wire alien bodysuit with a mask and gloves

I could see this outfit on a space gladiator. The wire ‘cage’ over the fighter’s head would stop blades from piecing her face. The wing-like shoulders would also deflect projectiles and blades. Her vulnerable torso is protected.

Leather is always a staple material for any warrior. This Versace outfit has gold-plated studs to prevent enemies from grabbing our heroine. The big shoulders increase protection in that at risk area. They would likely stop a blade. The arms are covered. The belt can double as a whip-like weapon. The bottoms are shorts, not an impractical skirt.

This Zaldy outfit is for warriors who don’t want to hide from their enemies. The mirror ball material would reflect light and might blind or confuse her foes. The cone bra clearly can be used to mount guns on. The huge shoulders protect the back of our warrior’s neck.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – March 13th

The first draft of Provoking Odium (releasing in June) is done! Woot! It is a hot mess. All of my first drafts are that way. But I love Odium. I love his female. I really enjoy seeing them on page together.

I have two more drafts to craft until I send this story to my Awesome Editor. I’m on track to complete those by April 1st.

I have no idea which story I’m crafting after that. It could be the next cyborg romance. It could be a story set in the Refuge (Dark Thoughts) series. It could be one of the gazillion alien romances floating around my brain. I won’t know what I’m writing until Provoking Odium’s submission draft is done.

The Changing Of The Seasons

Spring is approaching in my corner of the universe.

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. The melt off, the rivulets of melted snow coursing down the street, through the back yard always fascinate me. What caused it to veer right? Where is all that water going? I also love seeing the plants sprout and, of course, the baby birds/animals are adorable.

Do the planets in the cyborg world have changing seasons? Yes, most of them experience seasons. Sometimes they have wet seasons and dry seasons. Sometimes they have snowy winters and sunny summers.

I don’t talk about this much in the stories because usually the story doesn’t span multiple seasons. So terrain might be dry throughout the story but it had a wet season earlier in the solar cycle.
