Testing Truth – Stories You Might Want to Re-Read

By Cynthia Sax on September 12, 2020

There are 3 more days until Testing Truth releases! Woot! I can’t wait for you to read this story!

Testing Truth can be read on its own. But I think this story, especially, is much more powerful and meaningful if you’ve read the other stories in the series plus Seeking Vector (the Captain’s story).

Truth, for all his jokes and wisecracks, pays attention to others. He has learned from Chuckles, Doc, Dissent, North, his captain and their experiences with their females. He has noticed, as one tiny example, that some human females like to color their hair. So when his female constantly changes her hair color to match her outfits, he takes that in his stride.

And there is a nod to each of the previous stories in the Cyborg Space Exploration series in Testing Truth. These nods might be slight (like Truth’s comments on hair color) so you might only catch them during the re-read but they’re there. (grins) I had great fun slipping them into the story.

Of course, the Rebel Cyborg storyline builds. That will be resolved in the next stretch of cyborg stories (Containing Malice will release in February).

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Throwback Thursday A Day Late – Dark Fire

By Cynthia Sax on September 11, 2020

I lost track of the days again. Having day-specific posts during a period when no one knows what day it is might have been a bad idea. (sheepish grin)

Anyhoo…

I LOVE dragons. My first published story as Cynthia Sax was a medieval dragon shifter romance (that story has been greatly expanded and will be re-released under C.S. Sax this month). Dragons are big, bad, primitive and they breathe FIRE. I find that to be so very awesome.

Dare, the Dracheon warrior hero in Dark Fire, is a nod to dragon shifters. He can’t shift into dragon form. I haven’t yet figured out a plausible scientific explanation for that. But he CAN breathe fire, he can cover his hunky body with scales, and he has talons. Plus he has the same primitive nature.

Faylee, his heroine, is one of the best thieves on Carinae E. She is tiny and quick and Dare’s inner beast definitely sees her as prey. There’s a bit of capture fantasy in Dark Fire. These two are HOT together.

Dark Fire Alien Romance

Dark Fire

What the Beast wants, the Beast gets.

Dare’s savage nature has made him an outcast among his kind. The silver-scaled Dracheon warrior can’t control his inner beast. It’s too strong. When his primitive instincts told him his destined mate was on Carinae E, he had no choice. He had to travel to the outlaw planet. There, he hoped to meet a female powerful enough to survive his Drache.

He finds Faylee, a delicate little human.

Faylee is the best thief on the planet. Everyone she encounters mistakes her for a young boy…except for a tall, shiny warrior from off-planet. When she gazes into Dare’s flame-filled eyes, he makes her feel, for the first time, like a desirable female. The fire-breathing male has her yearning for hot kisses, fierce embraces, and a future filled with love. She doesn’t realize mating with him might be the last thing she ever does.

Dare’s beast isn’t the only danger on the planet. An enemy from the past has returned and he’s determined to stop Dare and Faylee…permanently. They’ll need luck and the assistance of every warrior in the Refuge to stay alive.

Dark Fire is a STANDALONE SciFi Romance set in a gritty, dark world.

Bloodshot And Nanocybotics

By Cynthia Sax on September 10, 2020

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I recently watched Bloodshot, a movie in which Vin Diesel (bites fist) plays a cyborg. (grins) Yes, this movie is pretty much designed for me.

We became super excited when we saw Vin Diesel’s ‘nanites.’ They are EXTREMELY similar to the nanocybotics in my cyborg romances. There are some variances but they are basically tiny machines that repair wounds and other damage and they looked dang close to how I’ve always pictured them.

How is this possible?

These similarities are possible because we likely based our nanocybotics/nanites on the same existing research and we both increased their capabilities, projecting the most obvious improvements to the technology in the future.

As Bloodshot’s Director, Dave Wilson, shares “The concept of having a microscopic, robotic organism in our bodies that delivers medicine to a particular part of your body, that is not far away. We use that as a base and take a giant, scientific leap.”

Before writing Releasing Rage, I talked to a gazillion scientists about how cyborgs could repair themselves and a few of the scientists had the same suggestion. That suggestion was the basis for nanocybotics.

This is one of the (many) reasons why I’m cool with other writers using nanocybotics and other ‘technology’ in their own stories. I based these technologies on existing research. If other writers read the same research or talk to the same scientists, they would likely have the same ideas. The ideas aren’t truly mine. They belong to the research, to today’s information.

Testing Truth And The Rebel Cyborgs

By Cynthia Sax on September 9, 2020

Some reading buddies have asked if we will learn more about the Rebel Cyborgs in Testing Truth.

YES!

There is a HUGE clue about who is leading the Rebel Cyborgs revealed in Testing Truth. And some alarming revelations around what they’re planning to do.

Power should be afraid, very afraid, but you and I both know he’s too arrogant and too overly confident to be scared. (grins) I am SO looking forward to writing his story (I have to write the first 4 stories in the Rebel Cyborgs series first).

Testing Truth is the end of the Cyborg Space Exploration part of the cyborg series. The Rebel Cyborg section will be next. Will the cyborg saga ever end? That’s doubtful. Sections of it will end. But new sections of it will begin.

And there will be different issues emerging as the cyborgs evolve. The next generation cyborgs aka the freeborn cyborgs will have different outlooks on life and different issues than the formerly enslaved cyborgs, for example.

The Humanoid Alliance also haven’t been sitting on their asses. They are developing new types of devices and new types of warriors. They will eventually want their cyborgs back in their control or they will want them dead. The cyborgs know too much. The Humanoid Alliance won’t allow them to live peacefully…or as peacefully as beings manufactured to fight can live.

Testing Truth And Images Of Space

By Cynthia Sax on September 8, 2020

Note:  Testing Truth, my next cyborg romance, releases in 7 days. There WILL be spoilers posted about this story, especially as I’m not currently on Facebook to monitor this. If you don’t like reading spoilers, consider pre-ordering Testing Truth and then staying away from the bookseller page.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby was teasing me this morning as I was searching through alien planet images, looking for a great one for today’s countdown post. He joked that book promotion was merely an excuse to share images of space and alien planets.

The man is exactly right. (grins) I LOVE looking through space images. They inspire my muse and get me all excited to write. And they’re beautiful. Even if I didn’t have book information to share, I would still look at them.

Stock Art Crafted By And Indirectly Purchased From: grandfailure

One of my favorite artists is grandfailure. I collect grandfailure’s works. Any stock photos this artist posts on the site I frequent, I purchase for my collection.

Stock Art Crafted By And Indirectly Purchased From: grandfailure

Do I share them with you? Ahhh… I don’t often do that. I don’t feel right using them with promo. Each image is meant to be seen as a whole. They’re more emotion-evoking that way. Blocking part of the image with my cover or words seems…wrong.

I collect them because they inspire me and make me happy. I share other images because I hope they will make you happy.

Testing Truth – Final Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on September 7, 2020

Testing Truth, the next cyborg romance, releases next week. Woot!

You can read the first scene from the first chapter of Testing Truth here:
http://tasteofcyn.com/?p=7350

This week I’m sharing the final scene of that first chapter.

***

“I would do anything to be part of this mission.” Dissent’s female frowned.

Dissent looked at Truth. The warrior didn’t want to quash his female’s ambitions.

And they had to be quashed, unfortunately.

“You can’t explore Nereid Negative One with us.” Truth extracted a straightening tool from a pack placed near the fighter ship. “But you can be part of the mission.” He held the tool out to Dissent’s female. “This is for you, Great Stunner of Beings.”

She clasped it. “Do you want me to hit you with this?”

“That’s tempting, but no, don’t hit me with it.” He grinned and handed Future a similar-shaped tool. “If we are to land on the planet without arousing suspicion, we should modify the fighter ship to look like it is in need of repairs.”

“You want us to rough up the fighter ship.”  Dissent’s female gazed at the vessel. “That feels wrong. It’s in perfect condition.”

“Cyborgs optimize functionality. They don’t reduce it.” Future was as hesitant to damage the fighter ship as Dissent’s female was.

“Being blown up reduces my functionality.” Truth grabbed a tool for himself.

He wasn’t hesitant…about anything.

The fighter ship had to be damaged. He wouldn’t pass up this rare opportunity to do so.

“Ayeeee.” He mimicked Victorious the Vanquisher’s battle cry and ran toward the vessel. Using a fraction of his strength, he whacked a side panel.

Metal rang against metal. A dent appeared in the previously smooth surface. Some of its shine dimmed.

He looked behind him, seeking his audience’s reaction.

Dissent’s female and Future gaped at him.

Dissent’s expression was blank.

A second demonstration was required. Truth clobbered a different part of the fighter ship and then another and another, transferring some of his frustration at planet rotations of inactivity onto the panels.

Dissent’s female was wrong. It didn’t feel wrong. It felt great.

She was the first being to join him. The little human tapped at a side panel tentatively and then glanced at him.

“If you don’t have the strength to damage the fighter ship, that’s regrettable, but I understand.” He teased her. “You’re a human.”

“Fuck that.” She beat the fighter ship with the straightening tool. “And fuck anyone who thinks I’m inferior.” The metal rang with the ferocity of her strikes. “Fuck those who question my strength.” Sweat beaded on her forehead. “Fuck beings who tell me what to do.”

“Yes. Fuck them.” Future didn’t moderate the power of his first blow. It would take a team of cyborgs to smooth out the dent he made. “Fuck those who don’t give me a chance.” The tool he wielded swung dangerously close to Truth’s head. “Fuck being stuck on this ship.”

Truth backed away from the fighter ship, watching Future and Dissent’s female as they beat the nuts and bolts out of the vessel. His frustration had been at minimal levels compared to theirs.

“I had a systematic plan for damaging the fighter ship, D Model.” Dissent crossed his arms in front of his chest. “This was not it.”

“This is a better plan, J Model.” Truth grinned at him. “Look at how happy they are.”

“Happy isn’t the word I’d use to describe them.” His friend’s tone was dry.

His female was pounding the shine off a side panel, cursing at it as though it were responsible for all the emotional damage in the universe.

One of Future’s strikes went wild, connecting with the landing gear. A piece of it fell off.

“We need that part if we hope to land the fighter ship.” Dissent glanced at Truth.

“We’ll repair it before we leave.” He was 89.5698 percent certain that was possible. “They’re a human and a cyborg offspring. How much damage can they do?”

The side panel Dissent’s female had been pummeling dropped to the floor.

Her warrior grunted.

Truth laughed, greatly entertained. “This is so much fun.”

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 6th

By Cynthia Sax on September 6, 2020

This is a long weekend in my section of the universe. I plan to read and bake brownies and goof around with the Dear Wonderful Hubby today (Sunday) and tomorrow (Monday).

I’ll be thinking about the stories, however. That is one of the upsides (or the downsides, depending on how you look at it) of being a writer. There are no true days ‘off.’ Our stories rattle around our brains, even when we’re not writing.

The story in my brain right now is Containing Malice, the first story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February). Malice is a C Model cyborg who was left behind during the mass rebellion. He’s angry, very, very angry, and much of that rage is directed at his female, the scientist experimenting on him. He doesn’t know she is as much a prisoner as he is…and she has a plan to set him free.

We WILL meet Power’s female in Containing Malice. (grins) I can’t wait for that!

Anyhoo… I start Containing Malice on Tuesday. I suspect there will be a few false starts with this story. There usually are. It takes me several tries to figure out when to start stories. But I am WAY ahead of schedule (due to the Great Pause) and I have plenty of time to get it right.

Testing Truth And Family

By Cynthia Sax on September 5, 2020

Many of the planets in the cyborg series have been hard hit by war. (Blast the Humanoid Alliance.) And many of the heroines have lost family members and other loved ones.

That’s not the case with Princess Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth. She has biological parents – her mother and father, the Queen and King – and she has TWO brothers—the Crown Prince and the younger Prince. She also has a found family. Her Royal Dresser, her Private Secretary and her Royal Guard have cared for her since she was a baby. She views them as her parents also.

When her biological mother, the Queen, assigns Nancy the mission of rescuing her youngest brother, the Prince, it is her found family who accompanies her. Nancy might feel lonely at times but she is never truly alone.

Which, as you can likely guess, suits Truth just fine. (laughs) Our chaos-seeking cyborg is an extreme extrovert and he thrives when he is around other beings. He views Nancy’s huge family as one of the many appealing things about her.

That doesn’t mean they don’t present challenges to his relationship with Nancy, however.

Cyborgs And The Fallen

By Cynthia Sax on September 4, 2020

Note: This post has nothing to do with Testing Truth, my upcoming cyborg romance release. It DOES have everything to do with current events.

Often, reading buddies will send me messages after ‘good’ warriors in my stories die. They are understandably upset and they sometimes ask me why the death was necessary. They would prefer that no ‘good’ warriors die in my stories.

I would prefer that too—in my stories and in real life. But the nature of battle, of being a warrior, is to face death every day. Sometimes, warriors conquer death that day. Sometimes, unfortunately, death wins. That death could be their own or, more likely, it could be the death of a brethren, a friend, or someone they knew well.

I’ve completed years of research for my stories (I started these studies well before I published my first cyborg romance), had the honor of meeting and speaking with thousands of Earth-based warriors. Every warrior I’ve met has grieved the loss of a fellow warrior.

I feel to not show that in my stories is to dishonor the sacrifices made, the sacrifices being made. It isn’t capturing the true essence of being a warrior and the trauma they endure.

They know when they step onto a battlefield, they or someone they know might die. They have to deal with that and with grief every dang day. It is part of them.

Which is why I’m so fraggin’ sad at the moment. I’m sad that not everyone realizes the sacrifices warriors make. I’m sad that they don’t understand the bravery and strength required from these women and men. I’m sad that they don’t honor and respect the fallen.

To warp a saying from The Mandalorian, that isn’t the cyborg way.

And that isn’t my way. Know that I respect these sacrifices. I value them. They and the fallen will never be forgotten.

Throwback Thursday – Defying Death

By Cynthia Sax on September 3, 2020

Defying Death draws an emotional reaction from me as it is one of the first stories of mine to endure a troll attack. A group of so-called Amazon ‘reviewers’ bombarded the story with 1 star reviews, hoping to stop readers from picking it up and seeking to discourage me from writing more cyborg romances.

You can read about those adventures here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2016/07/20/i-aint-afraid-of-no-trolls/

That attack didn’t stop me from continuing the series. I am extremely proud about that. It reaffirmed my love for writing and for cyborg romances, made me even more determined to tell my cyborgs’ stories.

I love this story also. I love that Death was willing to trade his life for one wonderful moment with his female, for one taste of love. I love Tifara’s passion around viruses. I’m equally passionate about cyborg romances and completely understood her feelings.

I love the two of them together. They are magical.

Defying Death

He’ll risk it all for one moment of happiness.

Cyborgs don’t show emotion. Death learned that lesson early in his long lifespan. To survive, he hides his fierce passions behind a stoic wall. He calls no warrior friend. He never admits to caring for any being.

Even the human female he’s destined to love.

Tifara is Death’s obsession, his sole opportunity for happiness, to express the all-consuming passion burning brightly inside him. He’ll do anything to obtain the curvaceous medic: defy a direct order, abduct Tifara from her battle station, and wage war on his fellow cyborgs.

To earn her love, he’ll have to risk much, much more.
