Seeking Vector Is A Sidequel
Seeking Vector is a sidequel. It occurs at the same time as Hers To Command and Ghost Of A Machine.
Why did I write Vector’s story as a sidequel?
Because the cyborg mass rebellion is such a large event; I needed more than one story to tell it. Every enslaved cyborg in the universe is escaping the Humanoid Alliance at the same time. That’s huge. It involves millions of warriors and many moving pieces.
In Hers To Command, we see the rebellion from the vantage point of space, delving into how it affects the fleets of ships and their crews. In Ghost Of A Machine, we observe the impact on the fighting on the planet level. In Seeking Vector, we experience the rebellion from the viewpoint of the cyborgs on the Humanoid Alliance battle stations.
What does this mean?
Everything we discover in Hers To Command and Ghost Of A Machine isn’t yet known by the characters in Seeking Vector. At the beginning of Seeking Vector, Vector doesn’t know there will be a mass rebellion. He doesn’t consider the human/humanoid Rebels to be allies. The Humanoid Alliance don’t realize cyborgs have free will. The only offspring born to cyborgs have been male.
The next larger story will explore what happens after this mass rebellion. There will be consequences. The Humanoid Alliance won’t go away quietly. New enemies will emerge. The cyborgs will require more planets to settle upon and not everyone in the universe will like that.
But we’ll experience the rebellion one more exciting time with Seeking Vector.

Seeking Vector
A cyborg with a secret… A female seeking the truth…
Vector, the C Model captain of the Freedom, is a cyborg many warriors wish to emulate. He fights fiercely, leads with honor, has earned the respect and loyalty of his crew. But no being, not even a cyborg, is perfect. Since arriving at the Homeland, Vector has been hiding a dark truth about his past. If his secret is exposed, he could lose everything – his position, his ship, and his life.
Kasia excels at uncovering secrets. Half a lifespan ago, her curiosity placed her on the Humanoid Alliance’s kill list. Now she has accessed information the cyborg council would prefer remain hidden. Their warriors are hunting her and won’t rest until she’s dead.
When Vector arrives on her battle station, all grim determination, gray skin, and bulging muscles, Kasia knows he has been sent to kill her. That doesn’t stop her from wanting the dominant cyborg. She senses the savage nature under the male’s controlled exterior, sees the mysteries in his brilliant blue eyes, craves the roughness of his touch. She will risk all she has to experience his embrace.
Kasia braved the cyborg council’s ire for a reason. If she doesn’t convince Vector to act on the information she uncovered, the enemy could destroy his home planet and render every cyborg in the universe immobile.
Can a doubting C Model warrior learn to trust and to love before it is too late?
Seeking Vector is Book 10 in the Cyborg Sizzle series and is a STAND-ALONE story.
It is also a Cyborg SciFi Romance.

Second Scene From Seeking Vector
Seeking Vector, the next story in the cyborg series, is releasing October 3rd. Last week, I shared the first scene from the first chapter.
You can read that scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/09/11/first-scene-from-seeking-vector/
This week, I’m sharing the second scene.
Has the enemy shared any new information with you? The cyborg council member asked.
Power had never shown any interest in the Humanoid Alliance or Rebel information being shared with them. Vector suspected the E Model was concerned about cyborg data being accessed.
Had the council finally decided to authorize a mass cyborg rebellion? It would be about fraggin’ time. Vector shook his head. Many of their brethren remained enslaved, being tortured, tormented, killed.
No new information has been shared. That didn’t mean she didn’t have new information. She knew a scary number of details about them. That knowledge had been sourced from both cyborg and Humanoid Alliance databases.
His foe wasn’t aligned with the cyborgs. Power wouldn’t be concerned if she was on their side.
She could be aligned with the Humanoid Alliance. They viewed females as inferior. No cyborg had ever seen a female commander or captain in their ranks. But females had been used in the past to retrieve information.
Vector doubted she was a Rebel. He’d accessed their databases, including their top-secret communications, and had found not one record of a being with her capabilities. The Rebels also gave no indication they knew cyborgs were capable of free will, of acting on their own.
The other alternative was she was working for an unknown entity.
The Humanoid Alliance had the firepower and numbers to attack the cyborg Homeland but at least they were familiar. The cyborgs knew how they operated, how their human brains worked.
They knew nothing about this unknown entity.
Vector wiggled the toes inside his boots. He’d learned firsthand how dangerous lack of information could be. A simple detail like not knowing about the insects on a new battleground could end the lifespans of hundreds of warriors.
That was why he’d reduced his crew to four, had warned them of the risks they were taking.
You have authorization to track down the enemy. Power gave Vector the approval he needed. Find out how they are accessing our transmissions, what they know about us, what their plans are. There was a pause. Use whatever means necessary to gain that information. Then terminate them.
I understand. He was to torture and kill the enemy. Vector pressed his lips together.
Killing wasn’t an issue. He was a C Model cyborg, had been designed for two things – killing and breeding. He enjoyed ending lives.
There was little honor in torturing the enemy. He’d do it to safeguard the Homeland, protect his brethren, limit the danger. And it would give him proof she was the enemy, reassure him her death was necessary.
Vector retained a sliver of doubt that she was using the information she uncovered against them. It was a foolish reservation. Why else would she hack into cyborg transmissions, take those risks?
But that uncertainty niggled at him. He required confirmation before he killed her.
Contact me when you’ve completed your mission. Power ended the transmission, the E Model needing no such reassurance.
Vector couldn’t start his mission until he located the enemy. That frustrated him.
“Systems check.” He directed his crew.
“All systems online and fully operational,” North, his first officer, replied.
“Monitor all transmissions—cyborg, Humanoid Alliance, Rebel, and other.” Vector was doing that also. “Share anything unusual.”
“Yes, Captain.”
Are you looking for me, Vector? A feminine voice drifted over a private transmission line, the encryption around her communication impressive.
It aggravated Vector that she knew his name, knew almost everything about him, and he knew next to nothing about her. I’ll find you, female.
Only if I want to be found. She laughed softly, mocking him. Him. A C Model cyborg, one of the best captains in the cyborg fleet, a skilled warrior.
Vector jutted his jaw and tracked her transmission back through the relays, operating at cyborg speed. There were two possibilities left. If he guessed wrong, she’d discover his error and disappear, possibly forever.
He needed an additional transmission. I’m not alone. Wait a few moments and contact me again. He ended the transmission.
That would annoy his opponent. The female, like Vector, preferred to be in total control, deciding when to open and end communications. She would contact him again, simply to tell him that.
Vector had to make his excuse a reality. If she discovered he remained where he was, that he hadn’t sought a private space, she might become suspicious.
“North, you have the bridge.” Vector stalked away from the controls. The doors opened and closed around him. He navigated through the empty hallways, walking toward his private chamber.
Soon, she’d be his. His lips curled into a hard smile. He’d no longer be a target of her games.
He’d no longer crave her communications.
Vector entered his private chamber. Viewscreens hung on the walls. A sleeping support, never used because cyborgs didn’t sleep, dominated the space. The circuits he utilized to restore his energy levels were neatly coiled. Weapons were tucked away in compartments.
Nothing appeared to be touched but Vector had learned from harsh experience that appearances could be deceiving. He scanned the space. There were no life signs, no foreign objects that might convey cyborg-damaging contagion.
Are you alone, Vector? The female voice once again caressed his processors, the slight pauses between the words identifying it as simulated.
I’m alone, female. Vector sat at the foot of the sleeping support, the structure dipping under his weight.
He had her location. His enemy was transmitting from a Humanoid Alliance battle station in the Betelgeuse sector.
That was how she’d known about Betelgeuse Alpha. She was located on a vessel that was part of the impending invasion fleet.
Vector transmitted her coordinates to North, commanded him to find the fastest route, engaging all engines to arrive there as quickly as possible.
There were one thousand, two hundred and fifty-nine cyborg warriors enslaved on that battle station, mostly modern J Models. Their transmissions told him they were as mistreated as he had been under the humans’ command.
His brethren were being brutalized by their handlers, by the human officers, then decommissioned if they failed to achieve their nearly impossible assignments, killed in the most painful way possible, stripped of their parts while they remained alive.
The female was responsible for those horrors. Vector curled his fingers into giant fists, an odd sense of betrayal filling him. She wasn’t innocent. He’d been a fool to believe she was.
She would pay for that deception and for his brethren’s agony. He’d inflict the pain upon her himself.

I’ve Been Interviewed!
Fiona Mcvie interviewed me!
Here is a snippet…
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Cynthia Sax: I write about fantastical and futuristic situations but the emotions are ALWAYS real. In Seeking Vector, there’s a scene in which the hero believes he has lost everything. I’ve felt that. I think most of us have. We might not be fighting the baddies on a battle station in deep space but we’ve experienced loss.

Seeking Vector And Stowaways
Kasia, the heroine of Seeking Vector, is a stowaway. She is a fugitive hiding on a Humanoid Alliance battle station. She conceals herself in the air conduits, has lived unauthorized on the battle station for solar cycles, has been spotted a few times but was assumed to be crew.
How probable is this?
It is very probable.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I love to take cruises. We also love to talk with the crew on these cruise ships and we’ve heard the stories. Crew tell us about stowaways who live undetected for months on the ships, vessels smaller than a battle station.
The cruise ships are fairly closed systems. Movement on and off the ships is restricted but, once people are on the ship, they often aren’t scrutinized. The ships are big enough that no one, not even the Captain, knows everyone. If items go missing, well, the items have to be on the ship somewhere. Food and drink aren’t monitored. There are dark corners to hide and places to sleep and facilities to do your ‘business.’
This isn’t restricted to cruise ships. There are stories about stowaways on much smaller cars, trains, airplanes. In 1985, two boys, aged 10 and 13, stowed away on a boat, bus, train, car and finally an airplane, traveling from Dublin to London to New York. The boys weren’t detected until they were spotted wandering around JFK Airport.
Being a stowaway isn’t without dangers. Stowaways have suffocated in their hiding places or died of dehydration. Discovery by the crew of the vessel mid-trip might result in jail time, punishment, or, in the past, death. The greeting at the destination might not be kinder.
In Kasia’s case, discovery would mean torture and death. The Humanoid Alliance are hunting her. If they find her, they’ll kill her.
She doesn’t know if the cyborgs will treat her any better.

First Scene From Seeking Vector
Seeking Vector, the next story in the cyborg series, is releasing October 3rd. While we wait for release day, I figured I’d share the first chapter.
This week, I’m sharing the first scene of the first chapter.
Chapter One
She was the enemy, a threat to the Homeland.
Once Vector uncovered the identity of the female hacking the cyborg transmissions and tracked her location, he would stop her.
Permanently.
Vector stood on the bridge of his warship, his hands clenched behind his back. He stared at the cyborg-claimed planet, its image dominating the main viewscreen. Since escaping the cruel control of the Humanoid Alliance many human lifespans ago, he had vowed to protect the Homeland.
And he would…even if that meant ending his transmission exchanges with his intriguing adversary.
With the intriguing adversary, he mentally corrected. The female was unlikely to be his, to be the one being genetically compatible with him.
He wasn’t certain of that fact. His opponent had used a simulated voice on the transmissions. But it was improbable she was his female.
“The last shuttle has left the docking bay, Captain.” Truth informed him. The rarely serious male tapped his fingertips against the embedded control panel to the left of Vector.
Preparing to strike as soon as he located the enemy, Vector had transferred all but a minimal crew to other ships. Truth, yearning for battle, had retained his position as navigation officer, his duties expanded to encompass vacant roles. North, the first officer, was at his regular post to Vector’s right. Doc had left his medical bay to assist on the bridge.
“Chuckles, this is a warship, not a pleasure vessel.” Vector barked at the surly D Model seated in front of him.
That male completed his crew. He wasn’t as defective as Vector but he wasn’t fully functional either. The warrior had been damaged in battle, favored one of his knees.
Chuckles covered his bare left leg once more with body armor. “Sorry, Captain.”
He must have been sorry. Cyborgs couldn’t lie. Judging by his tone, he hadn’t been sorry about his informal appearance on the bridge, however.
He should have been. They had rules for a reason and Vector didn’t tolerate anyone disrespecting him or his vessel.
C Model captains were rare in the cyborg fleet. Big, primitive, prone to anger and reckless behavior, Vector’s kind was more suited to hand-to-hand combat, to taking action. They seldom issued orders, didn’t enjoy watching from a distance as others stormed into battle.
It had taken rigorous self-discipline and a ruthless adherence to regulations for Vector to carve out his place, a place he could protect, defend, control. He expected the same restraint from his crew.
Chuckles stretched out his legs, slouching in the chair, and Vector’s lips twisted. The D Model must have the ability to be obedient. The Humanoid Alliance would have decommissioned him if he had ignored their commands. He had clearly hidden his contempt for authority under a blank expression.
Vector didn’t blame him. There was little to admire in the Humanoid Alliance officers’ commands. He would have to earn Chuckles’ respect.
As he had earned the respect of the many warriors before him.
You’ve requested permission to leave your post and enter Humanoid Alliance space. Power, the leader of the cyborg council, transmitted on a secured private line. Have you located the source of the breach?
I will locate the source soon. Vector knew aggravatingly little about their enemy.
Based upon the voice she’d chosen to communicate with and her constant flirting, she was female. She was also one of the most technologically skilled beings he’d ever encountered. He would have guessed she was a cyborg—her knowledge base was that advanced—except she didn’t have the ability to process and respond to multiple transmissions.
His opponent concentrated on one conversation within the same duration and that conversation was usually with him. As far as Vector could detect, she communicated with him exclusively, sending him transmissions multiple times a planet rotation.
Being a possessive C Model, he liked that. Too much.
Once I’ve pinpointed the being’s location, I plan to take action immediately. His adversary was highly intelligent, hiding her location with relayed transmissions, concealing her true voice. Any delay might result in her slipping away from him.
You will locate the source soon. Power’s voice rose. It has been over thirty planet rotations and you haven’t yet tracked the source of that first transmission.
It isn’t that simple. Vector stiffened, irritated at the council member, at his opponent, and at himself. He was a cyborg. Finding her shouldn’t be as difficult as it was. I believe the enemy is on a ship and is relaying the transmissions through systems scattered across the universe. Every transmission is directed through different systems in different sectors.
The only reason he had narrowed down the source was because her ship had been stationary for planet rotations. That could change in a moment.
Should I give this assignment to a more advanced warrior?
Fraggin’ hole. Power was an arrogant ass. Vector gritted his teeth. I am two transmissions or less away from pinpointing the enemy’s location.
And she refused to deal with any other being. He’d shared one of the transmissions with Crash, a cyborg skilled in tracking communications, and she somehow uncovered that unauthorized action. She didn’t speak to him for four planet rotations.
Make those two transmissions immediately. Power assumed Vector was in control of the communications, which he wasn’t.
I expect them to be made this planet rotation. The female hadn’t yet communicated with him. Was the information the enemy gave us about Betelgeuse Alpha correct?
She had told him the Humanoid Alliance planned to attack that planet.
It was correct. Power confirmed. All of her previously shared information had been correct also. We aren’t acting on that information. It could be a trap.
They hadn’t acted on any of the information. Power was as distrustful of others as Vector was.
He had to find their enemy before she grew frustrated with the lack of movement.

Balvan And Dark Flight
I’ve received messages about Balvan, the giant green gatekeeper of the Refuge. He appears in Chasing Mayhem, Dark Thoughts and Dark Flight.
He threatened to take over Dark Flight. I had to limit his scenes because he tended to steal them. Which wouldn’t be fair to Orol and Rhea. They had their own thrilling tale to tell.
Balvan’s story is next (Dark Strength – releasing early 2018) and I can’t wait to write it. Due to his size, the modified humanoid has spent his lifespan being misunderstood. Folks are scared of him. They don’t know he can be a gentle giant (when he’s not crushing skulls).
Balvan is deserving of love yet he doesn’t believe he’ll ever experience it. So he showers love on the tiny creatures he rescues. (The puffker in Dark Flight belongs to him.)
I’m looking for the perfect female for him. It won’t be Paloma, Rhea’s sister. She is much too young for Balvan. He views her as he views the puffker – as a being to care for, to protect, to dote over. Paloma, I suspect, being a self-absorbed teenager, might also unknowingly put another dent in that big heart of his. Balvan tends to become attached to the beings he cares for.
Which makes the hunt for his female even more important. Once he finds her, Balvan will never let her go.

Dark Flight has released!
Dark Flight
His mission. His challenge. His forever.
Orol, the Refuge’s second-in-command, has been given what he believes is a simple mission—escort two human females to the settlement. The winged warrior arrives at the meeting site to find one of the females missing and the other aiming a gun at his head. To rescue the first, he must capture the second. Once he has Rhea in his talons, however, he realizes he never wants to let her go.
Her enemy. Her captor. Her everything.
Rhea doesn’t trust anyone. She certainly doesn’t follow commands issued by a gorgeous flying male with glittering eyes, a beautiful face, and a seductive touch. Orol is dominant, edged with darkness, and determined to find her sister. Rhea will do anything to prevent that, even if it means playing sensual games of submission with her powerful enemy, seducing him into forgetting everything except her.

Third Scene From Dark Flight
Dark Flight is releasing on July 11th (it is available for pre-order today). I’m sharing the first chapter.
Read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/06/19/first-scene-from-dark-flight/
This is the third scene.
She reversed the thrusters on the right side. That slowed the spin. It didn’t stop the ship’s descent. It plowed into the ground nose first, the boom temporarily deafening Rhea.
She flew forward. The harness caught her before she hit the console, the straps digging into her shoulders and stomach. The breath whooshed out of her body.
Beams crashed to the floor around her, narrowly missing her chair. Viewscreens shattered. Pain, sharp and intense, jabbed her left shoulder, causing stars to explode in her skull and the bridge to spin merrily around her.
Severed circuits popped and hissed. The ship stopped moving.
Rhea sagged, her back touching the chair, and agony coursed through her, causing her vision to gray out. She straightened once more, reached behind her, touched metal. Something the size of her hand stuck out of her body.
The shard was foreign and frightening and she wanted to remove it. Now. But her father always told her panic resulted in poor decisions. She tried to wiggle the fingers of her left hand.
They didn’t move. Her arm was useless. The shrapnel must have sliced deep, probably had severed veins. She couldn’t treat the area, could barely reach it. If she yanked the metal out of her shoulder, she’d bleed to death.
It had to stay where it was. Using her right hand only, Rhea unfastened the harness, pushed herself to her feet. She swayed, lightheaded, and looked around her.
Guns. She’d need guns. There was always one in the front pocket of her flight suit. Rhea never went anywhere unarmed. But she needed more.
Opening the compartment under the console, she extracted a similar gun plus one long gun, slipped the smaller weapon into her pocket and slung the larger one over her right shoulder. Her vision blurred, the pain excruciating.
She staggered across the bridge, avoiding the live circuits hanging from the ceiling. The wires snapped and crackled with energy, lighting the darkened space.
The ceiling had collapsed over the doorway. The floor had buckled. The combination left only a small opening to exit through.
Rhea eyed it. The hole was tiny but so was she. She might be able to fit through it and there really was no other choice. It was the only way off the bridge.
She crawled up the wreckage, moving as quickly as possible. A downed ship on a supply-challenged planet would attract scavengers. And her sister was alone, would be scared. It was Rhea’s responsibility to protect her.
Her right knee brushed against debris, its edges extremely sharp, and she sucked in her breath, more pain added to her misery. Warmth dripped down her shin.
The panel she was balancing on shifted, tilting out of the door. She slid down the piece of metal, was airborne for a heartbeat. Guns fired. Projectiles zinged past her.
She landed with a plop on the sand and rolled under the ship, almost passing out as the shrapnel in her shoulder was pushed deeper into her body. Breathing heavily, she grabbed the long gun with her one functioning hand.
The air was hot, dry, smelled of mechanical lubricant and projectile residue. Debris from the ship blocked her from sight, providing a shield to hide behind.
Judging by the directions projectiles were being fired from, there were four, five, maybe more attackers. She was injured, was only one being, had use of only one hand.
But she was an excellent shot. Her mother had called her a natural. Rhea had practiced, improving her skill, until there had been no one in their settlement who could match her.
That skill hadn’t saved her parents. When the Humanoid Alliance arrived at their domicile, Rhea faced a choice. She could rush her sister to safety or stay with her parents, protect them if needed.
She had chosen Paloma, always Paloma, as her parents had always chosen the Rebel cause over their offspring, going away on missions as soon as Rhea was able to care for her sister, not thinking how their double life affected the young females, how it put them at risk.
Rhea had hidden Paloma in a nearby cave and returned to the domicile in time to see her father and mother executed, shot in the heads in front of their home. Marowit, the male who had betrayed her, watched, silent, no expression on his handsome face.
When it was done, when her parents’ bodies were lifeless and still on the stone pathway, puddles of blood pooling around them, the Humanoid Alliance officer in charge had turned to Marowit and smiled, told him his loyalty would be rewarded.
Marowit made a quip about how fucking the plain sister was the ultimate sacrifice and the warriors had laughed, laughed as her mother and father lay dead on the pathway before them.
Rhea had burned with anger, wanted to put projectiles in both of them and in herself for being so foolish, for believing she’d ever be anyone’s priority. She had been a cover for her parents and a mission for Marowit. That’s all she’d been.
But shooting the male would have brought her location to the Humanoid Alliance’s attention. They would have caught her and executed her. That would have left her innocent, trusting sister alone in the cold, unforgiving universe. Paloma wouldn’t have lasted long.
As she wouldn’t last long on Carinae E alone. Rhea was Paloma’s best option for survival and she wouldn’t fail her. She’d put her sister first, before her own life, bring her to safety.
To do that, she had to clear the space around the ship.
She poked the muzzle out of her hiding spot, balancing the weapon on her shoulder. Shots rang out. She listened, watched the angle of the projectiles. The enemy weren’t very intelligent, shooting again and again from the exact same spot.
Rhea tapped the trigger several times in rapid succession, altering her aim slightly with each shot.
No more projectiles originated from that location.
She’d killed someone. Guilt gnawed at her. Rhea ignored it. The beings, like her parents, had known the risks. They were choosing to attack her, to put themselves in danger.
And it was either them or Paloma. Her sister’s lifespan depended on Rhea staying alive.
She selected another target, pinpointed his or her location, aimed her long gun and fired.

Second Scene From Dark Flight
Dark Flight is releasing on July 11th (it is available for pre-order today). I’m sharing the first chapter.
Read the first scene here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2017/06/19/first-scene-from-dark-flight/
This is the second scene.
The merchant ship broke into the planet’s troposphere. The warship fired on them. Rhea swerved the vessel to the right. The missiles hit the side of a mountain.
Their merchant ship skimmed over a chunk of rock, scratching the metal underbelly of their vessel. The warship followed them.
Paloma continued to mutter about making peace and explanations, threatening to hail their Humanoid Alliance attackers. Rhea said nothing, her focus on their survival, on extracting themselves from their current precarious situation.
Sweat trickled down her spine underneath her gray flight suit. She lowered their ship, flying it close to the surface, hoping the size differential between their vessel and the warship would give them an advantage. The white sand underneath them parted, waves on an ocean of land.
More missiles arced toward them. She steered their ship, dodging one, two. The third one clipped the left side of their vessel, taking out one of their thrusters, jolting them.
Paloma screamed. Their ship’s wing dragged against the ground, sparks flying from the points of contact. Rhea pressed her lips together and compensated for the reduced power, leveling the vessel.
“We’re going to die.” Her sister gripped her chair’s armrests, her knuckles whitening.
“Not if I can help it.” Rhea would take care of Paloma, keep the only being in the universe she cared about safe, transporting them both to the Refuge.
“How can you be so calm?” Her highly emotional sister verged on the edge of hysterics. “They’re shooting at us.”
Rhea had spent all of her twenty-two solar cycles knowing that one wrong word could result in death, that the smallest physical reaction—an intake of breath, a trembling finger, a higher pitch in her voice—could give her parents’ activities away, dooming them all. She had learned long ago to conceal her emotions, hide her thoughts.
It irked her that her sister, the being who should know her the best, didn’t realize Rhea’s calm façade was exactly that—a façade.
The warship was gaining on them. The missiles were becoming more difficult to avoid. Rhea glanced at the viewscreen embedded in her console. The Refuge remained far away. “We won’t make it.” Her voice was flat.
Paloma whimpered. “Don’t say that.”
“There’s an escape pod.” There was only one. It was small, could hold a single being. “Get into it. Press Eject.”
“Noooo.” Her sister wailed. “I’m staying with you.”
“We’ll only be parted for mere moments.” Rhea hoped that was the truth. There was a possibility she wouldn’t survive. “There are containers of beverage, nourishment bars in the pod. Remain inside it. I’ll find you.”
“I didn’t mean what I said last planet rotation, about wanting my own life, about—”
“I know you didn’t.” They didn’t have time for that conversation. “Get in the escape pod, Paloma. Now.”
Her sister gulped, unfastened the straps around her body. “You’ll find me?”
“I promise.” Rhea didn’t have to say more. She had never broken a promise to her sister. Paloma knew that.
Her sister stood, took three steps toward the door. Then she paused, as though changing her mind.
That was typical Paloma, always fighting her on every decision. Rhea’s patience was at the breaking point. She opened her mouth to snap at her sister.
Paloma flung herself against her, hugging her tight. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Rhea fought to get those few strangled words out, emotion swelling inside her.
Paloma squeezed her once more and hurried out the door without saying another word. That was how scared her normally talkative sister was.
Rhea would keep her safe. She flew the ship with grim determination, veering it to the left, to the right, between boulders larger than multi-level domiciles. Missiles exploded around them, flumes of fire spiraling upward, sand spraying like shrapnel against their vessel’s panels.
The bridge without her sister was quiet, eerie, lonely. Paloma wasn’t the easiest company. She was in that awkward stage between being a child and a fully grown female. But they were sisters and Rhea loved her with everything she had.
Without her sister, Rhea had nothing and no one.
The system indicated Paloma had entered the escape pod. Rhea lowered the landing gear, increasing the cloud of sand behind her ship, hoping that would conceal her sister’s exit.
The escape pod detached.
The warship behind her didn’t slow.
Rhea exhaled, relief washing over her. The Humanoid Alliance hadn’t detected the escape pod. Her sister should be safe.
Missiles arced from the ground, the assault from a direction she hadn’t expected. Shit. Rhea steered to the right. She was fighting multiple enemies. The locals were shooting at her also. The few inhabitants of this planet were hostile.
Most of the beings were Rebels. Their hatred was especially strong for the Humanoid Alliance and that was whom they focused on.
The locals pummeled the warship pursuing her vessel with missiles, hammering them from all sides. The warship shot at her ship, intent on downing it, on killing anyone on board.
Rhea jutted her jaw and did her best to avoid being hit. Sweat beaded on her forehead. Tension pulled tight across her shoulders. If she could outlast the warship—
A missile blasted the remaining thruster on the left side. Fuck. The ship spun. Its nose and tail ground against the rock around her. Fighting for control, she knew her efforts would be futile.
An explosion rocked her ship from the rear. That must have been the warship. It had been the only object behind her. But its destruction had come too late.
Her ship was going down.
