Muse Food – Grounded Boats And Hints In A Story
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted these grounded boats in Panama.
The sight of them immediately sparked questions.
Was their situation purely due to low tide or was it a result of the severe drought the region was experiencing? Why hadn’t the owners anchored the boats farther out? Were the tires deliberately placed in the mud? Etc. Etc.
We asked ourselves questions because we knew, by looking at the boats, that something was ‘wrong.’ Boats shouldn’t be grounded like that. They belong in the water.
Writers can also use actions or images to hint something isn’t quite right. In Drift Would, for example, the heroine, in one scene, touches her stomach. That’s not usually a casual gesture.
And it isn’t one in her case. I’m warning readers something isn’t quite right with the heroine by using that one seemingly throwaway sentence.
Use the unusual to spark questions in your readers.

Muse Food – The Action Underneath The Ground
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this tunnel under a busy road in Costa Rica.
And it was a reminder to me that things happen under my characters’ feet. It served an inspiration for the tunnel fight scenes in Strike Zone (releasing at the end of the month).
We think about the action on the ground. We sometimes think about the action in the air. We rarely think about the action under the ground.
Yet it does and can exist. And showing that action could add excitement to our stories.

Muse Food – Toucans And White Space
The Dear Wonderful Hubby took this photo of a toucan in Costa Rica. It was taken through the lens of a telescope and the core part of the image was framed by a black circle.
Which I found VERY interesting. The black drove my gaze to the toucan. It drew attention to it.
I tend to use white space with my stories a similar way. If I want reading buddies to pay attention to a sentence or phrase, I’ll place it within its own paragraph, surrounding it with white space.

Muse Food – Whale Sculptures And Meeting Expectations
One of the things travelers expect to see when they’re visiting Grand Turks are whales.
But whales, being wild living creatures, don’t adhere to anyone else’s schedule. They do their own thing and they appear when they want to appear.
Which means some travelers won’t see whales when they visit Grand Turks.
Living whales.
Leaders on Grand Turks have ensured travelers will always see A whale by installing a magnificent life-sized whale sculpture by the shore.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I thought this was a clever way to ensure Grand Turks meets visitor expectations. (grins)
Our readers have expectations when they pick up our stories also. Think of creative ways to meet those expectations!

I love daisies. I love the contrast between the pristine white petals and the bright yellow centers. Daisies make me happy. (smiles)
I love contrasts in stories also.
I love the grumpy hero and the sunshine heroine. I love the dark moment followed by the romantic happy ever after. I love a sliver of tenderness during a brutal battle. I love the aiming-for-perfection heroine and the chaos-causing hero.
Contrasts are interesting. They had excitement to a story. I enjoy them.

Muse Food – The Trails We Leave
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted these condensation trails in the blue sky. They were left by some sort of aircraft.
It made me think about all the trails we leave all around us – footprints in the sand, cologne in the air, warm spots where we’ve been sitting, etc.
Beings in our stories would leave those trails also. There would be little signs they were in a place. That’s super cool and might be something we consider adding to our stories.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking along a rock-covered shore and we spotted this little snail hidden among the rocks.
There are little creatures all around us. They might be too little for our eyes to see without help. Or they could be hidden. Or they could be merely…small. (smiles)
That is true in the worlds we build also. Not every creature or other type of life form will be easily visible. But they are likely there. And they might cause chaos or invoke delight in your characters.

When the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were last in BC, Canada, we spotted this fairy door during one of our treks.
The fairy door was situated at the base of a beautiful tree and was surrounded by brightly painted rocks.
It was a bit of unexpected magic.
We were enchanted by it. (smiles)

Today is Boxing Day in my corner of the world. Historically, Boxing Day was a day to box up leftovers and small gifts to give to charity.
One of the (many) things I consider when building a world is…
How do the beings in that world carry their stuff?
We all have stuff. A warrior has weapons. A medic has medical supplies. A chef has cooking supplies and equipment.
How do they carry that stuff? Do they have wooden crates or cardboard boxes or leather packs or holsters or pockets or…?
It should be practical. The material should, ideally, be abundant on their planet. And it should reflect who the being is or hopes to be.

Muse Food – Clocks And Making Things Up
I told a new-to-me person I was a writer.
His lips twisted. And he said, “Oh. You just make sh*t up.”
Yes. That’s what I do. I make sh*t up.
But almost everything in our modern lives is made up sh*t.
Sunsets and sunrises, for example, are real. We see those happen. Animals and birds and other living beings experience them also.
8:00 am or 7:00 pm? That’s made up sh*t. Those time references were created to make life easier for us humans. We can tell friends, “Meet at the pub at 5:00 pm.” And they’ll know when they’re expected to be there. We don’t have to look at the placement of the sun or stars to figure that out.
Cars, money, our jobs, what our homes look like, the clothes we wear, our governments and almost everything around us is made up sh*t.
It is all world building in real time. Millions of people over thousands of years built our worlds here on Earth by making sh*t up.
My reply to the person who told me I just made sh*t up?
“Everyone makes sh*t up. They merely don’t realize it.”
