Muse Food – Revisiting Puerto Vallarta And Circular Storytelling

By Cynthia Sax on February 24, 2025

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have been fortunate to visit Puerto Vallarta, Mexico many, MANY times.

We always walk along the Malecon and we usually stop for a moment at the child riding a seahorse scupture.

It is different every time we visit. In the early years, it didn’t have the Puerto Vallarta sign around it. Now, that sign is painted a bit differently every visit.

I like that. I like seeing the changes.

As I like seeing the changes in characters in circular storytelling. When we place characters in a similar situation as they experienced at the beginning of their story, it emphasizes the growth and changes they have endured. That’s fascinating!

Muse Food – Mounted Police And Setting The Mood

By Cynthia Sax on February 17, 2025

I was completely enchanted by these mounted police in Qatar.

And…I shouldn’t have been. Because they ARE the police. They have the ability to arrest me and others and perhaps do worse to us.

Those beautiful horses? I suspect they have been trained to kill.

But someone from North America, like myself, associates them with parades and other peaceful events. We don’t view them as possible weapons.

If you want to change the mood of a story, that can be as easy as changing a small detail…like the mode of transportation the rule enforcers use.

Muse Food – The Dubai Frame And Transitions

By Cynthia Sax on February 10, 2025

While we were in Dubai, the Dear Wonderful Hubby captured this awesome photo of the Dubai Frame. It is a structure joining an older part of Dubai with a newer part of Dubai and is an absolutely stunning work of art.

It also highlights the importance of transitions – in terrain, in stories, in our lives.

Writing transition scenes isn’t my favorite part of the storytelling process. Often I struggle with them.

But those scenes are key to reading buddies enjoying our stories. It allows them to leave the previous scene behind them and fully embrace the new scene, entering it with our characters.

Put care and love into transition scenes. (smiles)

Muse Food – The Beings We Celebrate

By Cynthia Sax on February 3, 2025

When the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were in London, UK, we briefly stopped at the National Portrait Gallery (Admission is FREE!).

There were thousands of portraits on display.

I suspect there were more portraits stored in back rooms.

And I found it fascinating to see which portraits the National Portrait Gallery obtained and decided to display.

That is SO revealing of what and WHO they and society value.

What portraits would be displayed in your world?

Muse Food – Blue Sky It

By Cynthia Sax on January 13, 2025

In business (where I sometimes play in my other life), we often use blue sky as a verb. To blue sky something is to brainstorm without any inhibitions, without any restrictions. There’s not a cloud in the sky. The weather is wonderful. The space is clear. It is completely blank. And we can fill that space with anything we want.

It is often used after a huge change. We discard everything that happened previously because it is no longer applicable and we start fresh.

Our heroes and heroines often go through this when they experience a huge change. Maybe they’ve landed on a different planet where the rules they know no longer apply. They’re free to reinvent themselves. Who will they CHOOSE to become? And how will that impact their future?

Muse Food – Technology From The Olden Days

By Cynthia Sax on January 6, 2025

Someone gave the Dear Wonderful Hubby a CRT computer monitor to dispose of. We put it on the curb for electronics recycling.

A little girl walking to school with an adult was absolutely amazing by it. She chattered about it being SO big, about it being huggable, asked if people kept their toys in it. Her questions were adorable. And the adult patiently explained that it was a screen from ‘the olden days.’

The world you’re building in your stories will also have technology and other items from ‘the olden days.’ What happens to those items? Are they valued? Are they trashed? Are they ridiculed? Are they held up as examples of how the society has progressed?

How things from ‘the olden days’ are handled will relay a lot about your world.

Muse Food – Ducks At Universal Studios

By Cynthia Sax on December 30, 2024

A few years ago, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking around Universal Studios in Florida. The Dear Wonderful Hubby teased me because we were surrounded by superheroes and fantastical rides and amazing displays and I would get super excited when I spotted wildlife.

Like these sleeping ducks. (smiles) Aren’t they adorable?

We look for what we are trained to see. A warrior sees threats and possible danger. A medic sees wounds and illnesses to be cured. I see wildlife.

Muse Food – Cute Yet Dangerous

By Cynthia Sax on December 16, 2024

A visitor to Canada once called a Canada Goose a ‘cobra chicken.’ And that is a fitting description.

Canada Goose look harmless. They waddle. They’re covered with soft feathers. They aren’t very big.

Yet they will peck your brains out. For fun.

They are one of the most dangerous animals in Canada because they are mean, they’re strong, they’re relentless. They’ll chase you across the entire neighborhood just because you dared to look at them the wrong way.

The contrast of cute yet dangerous is a great setup for villains and for romance heroines. No one expects the tiny woman dressed all in pink to beat their a$$ into the ground. (grins)

Muse Food – Sunsets And Endings

By Cynthia Sax on December 9, 2024

I LOVE sunsets. The sky is painted orange, red, yellow and other colors. It is vibrant and alive and ever changing. And I like the creep of the darkness, how it spreads and takes over.

A loved one isn’t as enthusiastic about sunsets. She finds them sad because, for her, they signal the end, the end of the day, the end of the light.

I see them as the beginning, the beginning of the night (which I love), the beginning of visible stars, the beginning of being able to see a portion of the universe right above our heads.

I thought of that when I wrote the ending to Claiming Cure.

For some reading buddies, it will be the end of the cyborgs’ adventures.

But for me, their adventures continue. They’re having those adventures outside of our direct view but they ARE happening.

For them and for me, it is the beginning of whatever is next.

Muse Food – Unexpected Color

By Cynthia Sax on December 2, 2024

I love this vividly pink plant hidden underneath all the greenery. (smiles) This plant draws our attention. It draws the attention of pollinators and other beneficials.

It is a STORY.

I could write an entire story around this plant. Because it is different, special, has a unique purpose.

THAT is what draws readers and writers to certain heroes and heroines also. Write about the beings who are unique, who are different, who have a special purpose in their world.
