Throwback Thursday – Dark Flight

By Cynthia Sax on August 13, 2020

Dark Flight is the second story in the now completed Dark Thoughts/Refuge series. It features Orol, Kralj’s winged second-in-command and Rhea, a human female we first meet in Ghost Of A Machine (Ghost’s story in the Cyborg Sizzle series).

One of the many things I love about Dark Flight is it shows us a bit of Carinae E outside of the Refuge. This is one tough planet occupied by equally tough beings. Their entertainments are brutal and harsh and that suits the darkness inside Orol.

He might look like an angel with his handsome face and his beautiful wings but he IS a monster. He was manufactured to kill and he enjoys it a bit too much.

Dark Flight

His mission. His challenge. His forever.

Orol, the Refuge’s second-in-command, has been given what he believes is a simple mission—escort two human females to the settlement. The winged warrior arrives at the meeting site to find one of the females missing and the other aiming a gun at his head. To rescue the first, he must capture the second. Once he has Rhea in his talons, however, he realizes he never wants to let her go.

Her enemy. Her captor. Her everything.

Rhea doesn’t trust anyone. She certainly doesn’t follow commands issued by a gorgeous flying male with glittering eyes, a beautiful face, and a seductive touch. Orol is dominant, edged with darkness, and determined to find her sister. Rhea will do anything to prevent that, even if it means playing sensual games of submission with her powerful enemy, seducing him into forgetting everything except her.

Dark Flight is a STAND-ALONE SciFi Romance set in a gritty, dark world.

Testing Truth – The Duties Of A Princess

By Cynthia Sax on August 11, 2020

Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth, is a princess. I looked for someone who would appreciate Truth’s drama and add more excitement to his lifespan and she is definitely that being.

Royalty on Royaume (Royaume means Kingdom in French) is similar (but not the same) to a mishmash of European Royalty past and present here on Earth. The crown is passed from 1st born to 1st born. Gender isn’t a consideration. The current ruler is a Queen, Nancy’s mother.

Nancy is the Queen’s second child and is considered to be the ‘spare.’ Her older brother, the Crown Prince, is expected to wear the crown some day in the future.

As the spare, Nancy has a little more freedom but she also has more dangerous responsibilities. She is expected to marry a ruler of another planet, forge a strong alliance for Royaume and she is assigned roles that are too perilous for her older brother.

These dangerous duties are why she needs Truth. (grins)

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 9th

By Cynthia Sax on August 9, 2020

Nothing is happening with my Facebook accounts. They are in perma-review. I don’t think I’ll be back on Facebook before September. But hey, I’m merely an email away. (smiles)

Last week was a false start on the Holding Hoarse, the December free cyborg romance short story. I wrote two chapters and the words stopped. This usually means my characters made a wrong decision or I forced them to do something they would never do.

Which is exactly what happened.

The week wasn’t a waste of time. I learned about Hoarse and his heroine. I have gathered insights on them. I might not use these on the page but they will give my portrayal of Hoarse and his heroine a fullness they might have not otherwise had.

I have a better understanding of how I should tell their story. So I’m super optimistic this upcoming week will be a great writing week. (grins)

I should receive first round revisions on Warlord’s Return (releasing in November) on Friday. I’m crossing my fingers the story works for my Awesome Editor and she deems it revisable and worthy of my reading buddies. I think that should be the case (Ariq and his heroine are magical together) but I’m not the best judge of my own stories. (laughs) I love them ALL!

Oh and promotion-wise, I’m having some fun and talking about Dark Thoughts this week. I love Kralj and Dita so very much. It is nice to spend some more time with them.

Throwback Thursday – Breathing Vapor

By Cynthia Sax on August 6, 2020

As I’m crafting the first draft of Holding Hoarse, the December FREE cyborg romance short story, I often think about how the heroine would be a huge hit with the assorted offspring Vapor and Mira have adopted over the solar cycles.

I love Vapor and Mira. I loved them in Breathing Vapor and I love who they currently are, how they have evolved and grown. Their love is even stronger now than it was when they first met.

Breathing Vapor

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Traveling Through Books

By Cynthia Sax on August 5, 2020

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I LOVE to travel.

Whenever we make big financial and time decisions, we ask ourselves, “Will this hamper our traveling?” If the answer is yes, we will try to tweak the decision until it is a no.

Since I’ve quit the business gigs and have been writing full time, we’ve been going somewhere almost every month. That might be a day trip to a nearby town. (grins) Or it might be a longer, fancier vacation. We see a new place, experience new things, meet new people.

That all changed during the Great Pause.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I haven’t traveled since the middle of March. Well, we haven’t PHYSICALLY traveled. Thankfully, we have the awesome option of traveling through books. That is calming my wandering soul a wee bit.

Whenever I feel like I need to escape the new normal for a bit, I open an ebook and read. I can visit Regency England, present day Manhattan, different planets, different worlds. I travel for the length of the story.

That is SUCH a gift!

Cyborgs As Explorers

By Cynthia Sax on August 4, 2020

One of the (many) things I love about the Cyborg Space Exploration part of the larger Cyborg series is that it places the cyborgs in a very different role than they normally enjoy.

Cyborgs were manufactured by the Humanoid Alliance for one main reason—to fight battles. They were designed to kill other beings. That’s their primary skill and one of their great pleasures.

Ending a being’s lifespan doesn’t require communicating with that being or learning a being’s culture or respecting them. It might be emotionally easier if cyborgs didn’t do that. They had very little interaction with other species, other than figuring out how to defeat and kill them.

Exploring planets and collecting genetic information on the locals are very different tasks. It is a peaceful mission (it makes no sense to collect genetic information on beings they will kill). Communicating with other beings, learning their cultures, respecting them makes that mission easier to complete.

The cyborgs have made mistakes while undertaking this mission. That’s to be expected. It is a brand new role for them. But they have also learned and grown as beings. They aren’t the same warriors they were in Choosing Chuckles.

And because cyborgs share information, ALL of the cyborgs have changed. Each encounter has taught them something new.

I’m excited to see how the events in Testing Truth will change the warriors.

The Choices Characters Make

By Cynthia Sax on August 3, 2020

I had a dream about a short story last night. This story has many variations and is attributed to many different writers and I’ve been hearing it since I was a little girl. (If you know of writers/TV shows who are associated with telling it, please let me know and I’ll list them on this post.)

***

Bill, standing at a bus stop, watches as a man in a bright yellow Lamborghini speeds by him. The man is laughing and seems to be having the time of his life.

“Man.” Bill blows out his breath. “I would do anything to have a car like that.”

“You’d do anything?” An elderly man turns to him.

“I’d do anything.” Bill nods.

“What if I told you I could grant you your wish?” The elderly man leans closer to him. “You would receive a car exactly like that one. But.” He holds up one of his index fingers. “In payment for that wish, one hundred people you have never met would die before their time.”

“You’re not serious.” Bill scoffs at the outlandish offer.

The elderly man meets his gaze. An unnatural light gleams in his eyes. “I’m deadly serious.” An awe-inspiring power radiates from him.

F*ck. The man was serious. Bill stares at him. “I’d receive a Lamborghini?”

“You’d receive a Lamborghini.” The elderly man’s head dips.

“And I wouldn’t know the hundred people who’d die?” He wanted that confirmation.

“They’d be complete strangers.” The elderly man’s head dips again. “Consider this offer carefully. Once you agree to it, it can’t be undone.”

Bill hesitates for a moment. “What is there to consider? I don’t know the people and I’d have a Lamborghini. I agree to the deal.”

“I suspected you’d agree to it.” The elderly man grins as a bright yellow Lamborghini rolls to a stop before them. “Thousands of complete strangers have already accepted my offer.”

***

When I first heard the story, I thought the message was to not make deal with folks with magical powers. (grins) Like I mentioned, I was a kid.

Now, I realize the true message. And I find it bizarre that so many of us have to make a similar decision almost every day now. Maybe we have ALWAYS had to make these choices. But now, they are emphasized with all the discussions around mask-wearing, social distancing, limiting contact with others.

We are all Bill and we are all facing the same choice he did—our personal happiness vs the lives of complete strangers.

Note: If the universe is taking suggestions about which stories to next bring into this timeline, I have a list of cyborg romances I wouldn’t mind seeing unfold. (grins)

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 2nd

By Cynthia Sax on August 2, 2020

There’s still no response from Facebook. My accounts remain in review. I feel like I’m in the abyss…which makes me want to write a story about a crew stuck in an endless abyss. I WON’T write that story (yet) as I am focusing on the awesome cyborg romances I am scheduled to write.

Testing Truth, the next cyborg romance, is all set to release on September 15th. The countdown is on! I love this story. Truth and his Princess are hilarious AND magical together.

Warlord’s Return, the next and the final Chamele Barbarian Warlords story (releasing in November), is still with my Awesome Editor. I have my fingers crossed she loves it as much as I do (if that’s possible – smiles).

This week, I’m writing the first draft of Holding Hoarse, the December FREE cyborg romance short story. The goal is to complete the first draft this week and then complete the second (hopefully final) submission draft next week.

Family (Including Pets) Of Book Characters

By Cynthia Sax on August 1, 2020

My Awesome Mom is a cozy mystery reader. Many heroines in cozy mysteries have pets.

My Mom worries about these pets. This was a recent conversation I enjoyed with her.

***

Awesome Mom: (on the phone) The lady in this book has been away from her border collie all day. She’s going to return to an ‘accident’ on the carpet. That’s for certain.

Cynthia Sax: (grins) Dogs in books don’t tend to have ‘accidents.’

Awesome Mom: They might not say it on the page but you and I both know that border collie is leaving a ‘gift’ in one of her shoes.

LOL

***

We, as readers, tend to care about a character’s family members, including fur babies. As a writer, I care about them also.

It is one of the HUGE considerations when writing stories. The heroine might have found love with a hunky cyborg but what happens to her loving parents? Will THEY be happy with her daughter living on a faraway planet? Will the hero’s being-eating ‘pet’ be happy living on a crowded ship? Will the hero’s brethren accept the heroine’s newborn human female?

I not only look at their current happiness but I also consider their future happiness. What happens when the newborn becomes a toddler or a teenager or an adult? What happens when the parents get older or need help? Will the being-eating pet want a family of his own?

The hero or heroine would consider the happiness of their loved ones. As a writer, I do the same.

Bonus Weeks And Doing Nothing

By Cynthia Sax on July 31, 2020

I did almost nothing this week writing-wise. I had great intentions but I also had no expectations. This week was a bonus week. I completed the submission draft of Warlord’s Return (releasing in November) a week early. I could take the week off and still remain on schedule.

So I did exactly that—nothing. (grins)

During second drafts, I tend to lock myself in the writing cave and focus only on that. Housework is ignored. The Dear Wonderful Hubby tries his best not to disturb me. Even my Awesome Mom skips her once-a-week call.

When I emerge from the writing cave, I water the plants. I ‘catch up’ with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. I call my Awesome Mom for 3 hours. I return emails and think about book promotion and the next story.

And I sleep. I read. I watch movies and TV shows (during second drafts, I like to only have that story and nothing else in my brain).

It was great. I enjoyed the week.

But I’m also looking forward to the fresh writing planned for Monday (Holding Hoarse, the free short story releasing in December).
