Throwback Thursday – Defying Death
Cyborgs choose their own names and I find it fascinating that Death chose…well…Death. That is the only contribution he believes he’s allowed to make to the universe. He delivers death. He ends lifespans. He is the source of pain and suffering.
That changes when he meets Tifara.
Defying Death
He’ll risk it all for one moment of happiness.
Cyborgs don’t show emotion. Death learned that lesson early in his long lifespan. To survive, he hides his fierce passions behind a stoic wall. He calls no warrior friend. He never admits to caring for any being.

Throwback Thursday – Defying Death
Death and Tifara, the cyborg hero and human heroine of Defying Death, might seem, at first glance, to have tremendously different outlooks on life.
He’s a warrior. She’s a medic with a focus on infectious diseases.
He’s a cyborg. She’s a human.
But, when we get to know them, we realize they are more alike personality-wise than different.
Death is keenly focused on one task – finding and claiming his female. He is willing to give up his lifespan for one moment with Tifara.
Tifara is willing to give up her lifespan to find cures for infectious diseases, to save lives. She is very much focused on that task…to the point of obsession.
When she meets Death, for the first time in her lifespan, her attention is…diverted. (grins)

The cyborgs’ main focus, now that they have escaped their cruel manufacturers and have settled on the Homeland, is finding their genetic matches, the beings they are destined to be with forever and perhaps produce babies with.
Not much is known about these genetic matches…
Until Death meets his scientist female, Tifara. He would do anything, would gladly trade his lifespan for one moment with his little human.
She is extremely intelligent, in an absent-minded mad scientist sort of way. And her area of focus is viruses, which, at first, she believes the pull between them is.
Tifara will soon uncover it is an entirely different type of science. (grins)

Throwback Thursday – Defying Death
Death, the hero of Defying Death, will do ANYTHING for one moment of happiness, one chance at experiencing love, companionship, caring.
That touched me when I first wrote his story. It resonates with me even more now, after two years of being in a pandemic, often under lockdown, separated from some of the people I love most in this universe (like my Awesome Mom).
Tifara, the heroine, wants to understand what is impacting her, why she feels this tremendous attraction toward Death, the big, tough, stern warrior male who is her genetic match. Her expertise is viruses so, of course, she perceives their out-of-this-universe chemistry as a virus.
The discoveries in Defying Death are KEY to many future events in the cyborg world. Tifara is mentioned in Seizing Power, for example.

Throwback Thursday – Defying Death
Defying Death draws an emotional reaction from me as it is one of the first stories of mine to endure a troll attack. A group of so-called Amazon ‘reviewers’ bombarded the story with 1 star reviews, hoping to stop readers from picking it up and seeking to discourage me from writing more cyborg romances.

That attack didn’t stop me from continuing the series. I am extremely proud about that. It reaffirmed my love for writing and for cyborg romances, made me even more determined to tell my cyborgs’ stories.
I love this story also. I love that Death was willing to trade his life for one wonderful moment with his female, for one taste of love. I love Tifara’s passion around viruses. I’m equally passionate about cyborg romances and completely understood her feelings.
I love the two of them together. They are magical.

Interview With Rebecca Airies
I sat down (virtually) with Rebecca Airies for a short interview. Her latest release is Sabotaged Desires, a sexy Sci-Fi menage!
Cynthia Sax: What makes David and Robert sexy?
Rebecca Airies: Well, they’re both very handsome. David’s sexy because he’s supportive of both Robert and Susanne. He doesn’t choose sides. He’s not judgmental of either of them even though he’s been put in the middle of their arguments for days. He’s smart and alpha in a calm manner. With his training as a doctor he’s learned to be calm during stressful situations.
Robert comes off as hardnosed, at first. He’s definitely an alpha and worked his way up to his current position. He’s a man accustomed to having his orders followed. What really makes him sexy is that he can acknowledge when he’s made a mistake and apologize for something he did wrong.
Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Sabotaged Desires?
Rebecca Airies: I got this idea from a writing exercise. None of the story ideas in my folder were clicking and I needed to start something new. So I did an exercise that started with the first idea that popped into my head. A woman and two men trapped in a box. What if and questions helped develop it into Sabotaged Desires.
Cynthia Sax: What causes problems between Robert, David, and Susanne?
Rebecca Airies: Robert believes that Susanne has lied/cheated to gain her position. Both Susanne and David have a difficult time getting Robert to listen. Cheating and gaining a position through something other than merit is a hot button issue for Robert because of an event in his past.
Cynthia Sax: Is Sabotaged Desires a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?
Rebecca Airies: This might be a series. I’m interested in writing more about these characters and the others on the colony ship. There were several questions about what happens after this book that I’d like to know the answers to, but none of the secondary characters have stepped forward.

NASA at CES 2016
I was SUPER excited to see that NASA was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This was their first time at the show and they brought all the tech a space junkie could want to see.
There were mini rovers, a Mars simulator, and plenty of people to answer questions.
Robonaut 2 made an appearance. He is still legless, our poor humanoid robot. Robonaut 2 was designed to test the feasibility of robots taking on the more mundane tasks in space. He’s been to the International Space Station where astronauts tested his capabilities.
And there were humans at the booth, including Astronaut Dr. Don Thomas, who was signing autographs (folks were sneaking in questions also).

Crash And Burn
Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.

In a 1977 Star Wars interview, George Lucas shared
“I think of this as a movie Disney would have made when Walt Disney was alive.”

Investigating Time-Space Ripples

“In a long-running quest to find gravitational waves in space, the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched a mission yesterday (Dec. 4) to test wave-finding technology.
The mission is called LISA Pathfinder and will not actually search for waves itself. Rather, the mission will serve as the trailblazer for the technology scientists hope will help find these ripples in space-time.”
A Self-Fueling Space Junk Eating Machine

“Space junk–both manufactured and natural–has been orbiting our planet and threatening satellites and spacecraft with collisions. And accordingly, engineers and scientists have been devising ways to get rid of the mess. But whether it’s a spacefaring robot or spacecraft carrying nets or traps, it requires power, and that’s an expensive prospect. So, engineers at the Tsinghua University in Beijing have proposed a design concept for a space debris engine that can eat its way through the junk and convert it into plasma fuel to sustain its mission.”

Not A UFO
Sorry, folks. That light in astronaut Scott Kelly’s photo wasn’t a UFO.
“That’s one explanation. Another one—admittedly a bit more prosaic—is that the “UFO” is a reflection off the space station window. Even likelier is that it’s an overhanging piece of the station itself that happened to catch a bit of light. The ISS is larger than a football field, with solar wings, experimental platforms and habitation pods hanging off of it in all directions. It’s actually not all that easy to get a clear shot without some piece of hardware getting in the way”
