I Interview Bee From Sinful Rewards

By Cynthia Sax on August 8, 2014

I’m interviewing Bee from Sinful Rewards on Kayden Claremont’s online home today!

http://kaydenclaremont.wordpress.com/2014/08/07/cynthia-sax-interviews-belinda-carter-the-heroine-of-sinful-rewards-2/

I was a little hopped up on Nutella but thankfully Bee could follow my questions. LOL

Here is a snippet…

A tiny woman quietly enters the room. Her brown hair is twisted into a chignon. She’s wearing a plain white blouse, black dress pants and ballerina flats.

Belinda (Bee) Carter: I’m back. (smiles)

Cynthia Sax: I’m glad you could meet with me today. (hugs her)

Belinda “Bee” Carter isn’t quite sure what she’s gotten herself into. She’s been receiving mysterious messages from a secret admirer who is sending her more and more erotic dares. Each time she fulfills his desires, she gets rewarded. She’s convinced that her mystery texter is one of two super-hot men—Nicolas, the handsome billionaire, or Hawke, the sexy biker—but she can’t tell which one it is. And she’s coming to realize that beneath her peaches-and-cream exterior beats a heart that longs to play out all of her most secret fantasies.

As the stakes are raised again, will Bee succumb to the sensual allure of this latest dare?

The Power Of Fantasy

By Cynthia Sax on August 7, 2014

Bee, the heroine of Sinful Rewards, indulges in quite a bit of fantasy in the first story. She thinks about both Nicolas and Hawke, imagining what sex with them would be like, what they might be thinking about or doing while they’re watching her, the possibilities a relationship with either of these two men might have.

As Bee hasn’t yet had sex with either man, her fantasies show us more about her than they show us about Nicolas or Hawke. While, in reality, Bee acts prim and proper, her erotic imaginings are far from prissy. They reveal her wants and needs. In her dreams, she’s wild and confident and always accepted, always wanted. This is her inner self speaking, her view of a ‘perfect’ world.

Part of the fun for me as a writer and a reader is seeing how her reality compares with her fantasies, both in this first story and in the final story. Will her relationship with the man she chooses match her fantasies or will it be different? How is it different? Is her reality better, more than she could imagine?

I also believe that these fantasies allow Bee to slow down her physical relationships. She feels a rush of attraction for both men when she first meets them. Her sexy thoughts allow her to release some of this passion without unraveling her good girl image. She thinks about jumping them but doesn’t take action.

Fantasies played a huge role in my relationship with my destined-to-be hubby. We lived in different cities for almost an entire year when our relationship began. I would replay our first kisses, our first touches again and again, adding my imaginings to these memories. IMHO creative people are never truly lonely. We close our eyes and we’re with loved ones or our favorite romance heroes.

What do your fantasies tell us about you?

Clothing, Confidence And Concealment

By Cynthia Sax on August 4, 2014

Clothing is very important in Sinful Rewards. This isn’t merely because Bee, the heroine is a fashionista. It is because clothing symbolizes EVERY character’s internal feelings and personality.

Bee is very careful about what she wears. She wants to fit in and she doesn’t believe that other people will love her for who she is. In Sinful Rewards 1, she studies magazines and TV shows, copying the styles. Unable to afford self worth affirming brand name fashions, she puts together lower cost ensembles. She’s aware that they aren’t quite right and she believes this is one of the reasons she doesn’t belong.

Her clothing is also a way to hide. It’s a barrier between the hurtful world and her true self. She has exhibitionist fantasies but they’re simply that—fantasies. Bee won’t risk exposing herself to others. She doesn’t trust people not to hurt her.

Hawke, on the other hand, allows the entire world to see him. He stands on his balcony, defiantly naked and proud. Some of his secrets are written on his skin, his tattoos and scars telling a story. By shedding his clothes, he’s revealing himself to Bee and to others. He trusts her and the world not to hurt him. But he knows if they do strike at him, he’ll survive.

Nicolas, our well-dressed billionaire, doesn’t even loosen his tie during his first meeting with Bee. He dons the expensive suits other people expect him to wear, wearing them like armor. As with Bee, his clothing is a barrier between him and others. He has secrets, deep, dark secrets, and he doesn’t want anyone to see the true Nicolas.

Lona, the high-class escort, is another impeccably dressed character. She wears designer suits, respectable garments you might not expect a hooker to wear, hinting that she wants to be more than who she currently is. Cyndi, Bee’s best friend, normally wears designer clothes yet trades her expensive dress for a tank top and boxer shorts. No one who truly cares about status would ever do that.

Does your clothing tell others something about you?

Billionaires And Bikers – Should We Write In A Trendy Theme Or Genre?

By Cynthia Sax on August 1, 2014

When I first started writing erotic romances, I listened to the published writers who advised “Write the book of your heart and you’ll find a market for it.” I wrote contemporaries featuring billionaire heroes.

And I received rejections…from everyone. Erotic romance publisher wanted sexy paranormals. They weren’t interested in publishing contemporary erotic romances. This type of story wasn’t selling.

I looked at my long list of story ideas and found an idea for a paranormal erotic romance. It was a unique story, a story I was passionate about. The hero was a dragon shifter, not a wolf shifter. It wasn’t set in today’s world. It was set in a medieval fantasy world.

The first publisher I approached (Changeling Press) accepted Dragon Lord’s Mate. It required many rounds of revisions and even more editing but we all knew, with paranormals being hot, the story would sell well enough to warrant this hard work.

Five years later, I likely wouldn’t be able to sell Dragon Lord’s Mate. Very few publishers are looking for paranormal writers. They already have many successful paranormal writers writing for them.

I CAN, however, sell my beloved contemporary erotic romances. I can sell the stories I’ve written about billionaires and bikers and other delicious contemporary heroes. I’m happily writing more stories about my delicious billionaires while the market is hungry for them. As my farming granddad used to say, “You gotta make hay while the sun shines.”

The irony is that Blaine, the hero in He Watches Me, could have very easily been a vampire. If I had made that tweak, this story would have been sold years ago. I’m glad I didn’t. I like Blaine the way he is. But it was a possibility.

Should you write what is selling well right now?

Are you passionate about your idea?

If you have a list of ideas (I recommend keeping a list of your top 100 story ideas), is there an idea on this list that is selling well right now? Do you love this idea?

Because passion ALWAYS shows. There are thousands of erotic romances published every month. If you aren’t passionate about your idea, readers won’t be passionate either. They’ll give your story a pass and read something else.

Is this idea a unique twist on the theme?

Unless your story is already written and ready to be pitched to a publisher, a me-too, clone story of a popular release is unlikely to sell. If the publisher wants this, they’ll approach the original writer OR one of their existing writers and request it. Give the publisher a unique twist on the idea. When I pitched He Watches Me to Avon Impulse, I called it Fifty Shades Of Grey with exhibitionism, rather than BDSM.

This twist also keeps the theme fresh and interesting. I hear from readers with billionaire fatigue because every hero seems to be Christian Grey. There’s no need for that. Simply placing your billionaire at the top of a different industry (or giving him a different kink or a different dark secret or…) will make him unique.

Do you know WHY this theme is selling well?

When wolf shifters were hot, some writers wrote sensitive sophisticated wolf shifters. Yeah, a kinder gentler hero isn’t what wolf shifter readers want. They want the beast. The primitive animal male only the heroine can tame.

Know your theme. Know why readers are reading this theme. Ideally, your unique twist will make these readers happy. For example: Hawke, my hero in Sinful Rewards, doesn’t ride the expected Harley. He rides a chopper. BUT he does this because he’s a rebel, the rebel hero fans of biker stories want. He might be even MORE bad a$$ because of his different choice in bikes.

Can you write this idea quickly?

If it takes you ten years to write a story, you’re not catching any trends (and that’s okay, write what you want to write). What is selling well right now is only important to you if you can sell a story right now. The last installment in Sinful Rewards, my billionaires and bikers serial, is releasing a year from now. Bikers might not be hot in a year.

Are you willing to sell your story to a digital first publisher?

The big five print publishers have a long lead time (though this lead time is shrinking). It will likely take years for your story to be published. Some trends last (vampires lasted for years). Some trends don’t.

Publishing with a digital first publisher (like Avon Impulse) or self publishing eliminates most of this lead time and lessens this concern. Some writers had Fifty Shades Of Grey types of stories published days after this story broke out.

The longer the lead time, the higher the risk that the trend will have ended or the market will become so flooded with stories, your story might be lost.

What other considerations should writers think about when deciding whether or not to follow a trend?

Sinful Rewards 1

Cynthia Sax

Belinda “Bee” Carter is a good girl; at least, that’s what she tells herself. And a good girl deserves a nice guy—just like the gorgeous and moody billionaire Nicolas Rainer. He is everything she wants in a man.

Or so she thinks, until she takes a look through her telescope and sees a naked, tattooed man on the balcony across the courtyard. Hawke is mysterious, the bad boy she knows will bring only heartbreak. He has been watching her, and that makes him all the more enticing.

But when a mysterious and anonymous text message dares her to do something bad, she must decide if she is really the good girl she has always claimed to be, or if she’s willing to risk everything for her secret fantasy of being watched.

Is her mystery man the reclusive billionaire with a wild side or the darkly dangerous bad boy?

Sizzling Summer Nights Blog Tour

By Cynthia Sax on August 1, 2014

Sinful Rewards, my 12 novella scorching hot contemporary erotic romance serial, is set in Chicago in the middle of summer. The temperatures are hot and so are the men.

Bee, the heroine, is torn between a handsome billionaire with a dark secret (and an adorable sweet tooth) and a tattooed bad boy biker. With every passing day, passions escalate and her decision becomes more and more difficult.

Here is a short sizzling excerpt.

***

I allow my gaze to travel up the stranger’s body, over his thighs, groin, stomach, chest. A thick scar slashes through his right nipple and four letters are tattooed over his left pec – USMC – United States Marine Corps. He’s a military man, trained to protect, to kill. This should dampen my unseemly fascination with him.

I want him even more.

A larger tattoo stretches over his collarbone, the design depicting a sun framed by a pair of wings, the ink black and gray and achingly beautiful. The feathers are finely detailed, the softness appearing out of place on such a hard body.

The stranger’s spine is straight, his shoulders squared and his arms raised. A third tattoo encircles one huge bicep, the barbed wire in black ink serving as a warning. Danger. Do not enter. A wise woman would heed this sign.

I should heed this sign. I should look away. I can’t, my gaze drawn to him. The man’s chin is square, brown stubble shadowing his golden skin. His nose is flattened, his nostrils are flared, his—

I step backward, my heart pounding. No, my luck can’t be that bad. I look into the telescope once more. It is that bad. Military-style binoculars cover the man’s eyes. These lenses are pointed directly at me.

He’s watching me. I move away from the window, retreating into the shadows. He saw me looking at him. He knows. Heat rushes over me, making the world spin. This stranger knows I’m a pervert. He knows I’m not the good girl I’ve allowed others to believe. If he tells Cyndi, Mr. Wynters, anyone…

I hold my breath, count to five, and release it, repeating the action until the fog surrounding me dissipates and my rational thought returns. He won’t tell anyone and if he does, who will believe him? He’s standing on his balcony naked. This fact alone disqualifies him as a credible source.

Not that gossip ever originates from credible sources. I twist my lips, disgusted with myself for making this error. This is why I shouldn’t take risks. I take one look through the telescope and I get caught. My mom has one wild night with a bad boy and she conceives me.

Another Great Review For Sinful Rewards

By Cynthia Sax on July 31, 2014

Is Humor Necessary In A Romance?

By Cynthia Sax on July 31, 2014

I’m helping the always fabulous and wonderfully funny Eve Langlais celebrate the release of Kodiak’s Claim tonight on Facebook  from 8 pm to 10 pm EST. I love her delicious erotic romances (and this one has a bear shifter – bites fist). Eve’s stories always make me laugh.

All of my stories contain humor. Yes, even Assassin’s Haiku, my post-apocalyptic series (which my editor calls post-apocalyptic light – grins), has jokes in it. I believe the happy ever after ending that all romances should have is difficult to achieve without some humor, a hint of laughter and jokes in the couple’s (or more) future.

My dear wonderful hubby makes me laugh at least once a day, and I make him laugh, even when I’m not trying to be funny. He’ll call me when he’s stressed or angry, knowing our conversation will take a turn for the humorous, easing his tension.

Humor also eases tension between us. We’ve been madly in love for over twenty years but we still argue. All couples (or more) do. Our arguments almost always end the same way. One of us will say something the other person finds ridiculously funny, we’ll burst out laughing, and this turns negative emotions into positive constructive energy.

Bee, our heroine in Sinful Rewards, makes both of the heroes laugh. Nicolas, our elusive billionaire, is delighted when she shares her honest opinion of him. He’s not a man prone to mirth and his laughter surprises even himself. During their first encounter, they establish some inside jokes, the glue of a healthy, happy relationship. This is a link between Bee and Nicolas, connecting them.

Hawke, our tattooed bad boy biker, is even more amused by Bee’s antics, laughing loudly and often during their first meeting. They also establish the necessary inside jokes, phrases and humor that we know will be repeated and added to during the 12 novella serial.

That is one of the many magical things about humor and relationships. The longer a healthy couple (or more) is together, the more inside jokes they share, the tighter their connection. Words and phrases are associated with the loved one, with laughter. I know, decades from now, if Nicolas is called an a$$hole, he’ll think of Bee and smile. If Hawke sees a hot mess, he’ll also think of our heroine and relive that same happiness.

Do you believe humor is necessary in a healthy relationship? Do you like a touch of humor in your romances?

How To Feed A Romance Hero – Pizza

By Cynthia Sax on July 30, 2014

Sinful Rewards is set in Chicago and we can’t talk about Chicago without talking about deep dish pizza. My favorite pizza place in Chicago is Lou Malnati’s, my favorite pie being sausage with butter crust.

So I asked a pizza expert which Lou Malnati’s pie she’d recommend for four different romance heroes. (this expert preferred not to be named)

*******************************************************************************

The Sophisticated Executive

(think Nicolas from Sinful Rewards)

This billionaire hero wears expensive dark suits, white shirts, silk ties. He travels in a limousine, eats at the best restaurants, is seen at Chicago high society events. He has a private jet and divides his time between Chicago, New York and LA.

Recommendation

Pizza Recommended :
Deluxe (a little bit of everything)

Why you’d recommend this pizza: The Deluxe is the heartiest (and most expensive) of pizzas because it is loaded with toppings.

*******************************************************************************

The Bad Boy Biker

(think Mack, Hawke’s biker friend, from Sinful Rewards)

This hero dresses in leather and denim, has tattoos and rides a Harley. He thumbs his nose at the rules. He rarely dons a suit but when he does, it certainly isn’t traditional. He will do anything once and thinks the guys on Duck Dynasty are wimps.

Recommendation

Pizza Recommended :
Deep Dish Sausage with giardiniera

Why you’d recommend this pizza: This is not a pizza for wimps! Our unique sausage blend is bursting with flavor, but giardiniera kicks things up a notch.

*******************************************************************************

The Marine

(think Hawke from Sinful Rewards)

He’s proudly patriotic, willing to die for his country. He supports the All American dream, was likely the quarterback of his high school football team, likes apple pie and his mom. He calls the people he respects Sir or Ma’am, is very clean, organized, and always on time.

Recommendation

Pizza Recommended :
The Classic

Why you’d recommend this pizza: The Classic is the most popular pizza sold at Lou Malnati’s. While pepperoni may be the most popular topping elsewhere, in Chicago sausage is the traditional go-to topping.

*******************************************************************************

The Movie Star

(think Cole from Sinful Rewards)

He’s always in the spotlight, wears the latest trends, is seen in the latest social hot spots. He’s concerned about how he’s depicted and is constantly on for the cameras. His clothes, cars, attitude all scream ‘look at me.’

Recommendation

Pizza Recommended :
The Lou. (one of the signature pies)

Why you’d recommend this pizza: The Lou is a special pizza, it has to be to bear the name! It was Lou’s signature pizza.

*******************************************************************************

Thank you, mysterious pizza expert, for sharing your expertise with us today!

When Billionaires Collide

By Cynthia Sax on July 29, 2014

Would Blaine from He Watches Me have chopped down Nicolas’ tree?

http://romancingthereaders.blogspot.ca/2014/07/guest-post-giveaway-sinful-rewards-1.html
