Ordering Seeds And The Power Of Small
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have been ordering seeds for this upcoming outdoor gardening season (likely starting in May).
We ordered 500 spinach seeds.
The regular packet of spinach seeds we see in the dollar store or other places holds 50 seeds.
So the packet we ordered should have been 10 times as big, right?
Nope. It is the same sized packet. And it still had space for double that amount.
Seeds are amazingly small and light and it often feels like we’re buying a whole lot of nothing. But those 500 seeds, if half of them germinate, could supply the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I with spinach for almost five years.
There’s life in that tiny packet. There’s power. There’s energy.
I think of that when I write about a small heroine. She might be tiny but she’s often powerful. (grins)

Winter Gardening Update
The ground outside might be frozen but the grow station the Dear Wonderful Hubby set up for me in the basement is thriving. (smiles)
The cilantro is growing vigorously. I harvest a bit every day to put in soups and other dishes.
We have radishes! They are in different stages of growth. We harvest a couple every week as a treat.
The spinach is struggling a bit but there’s enough to give the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I one salad each every week…which is good because spinach, lettuce and other leafy greens are in short supply at neighborhood grocery stores.
The parsley seeds Awesome Mom-in-law found in her basement were duds. Nothing grew. I think they were a few decades old so that didn’t surprise me.
It is wonderful and a privilege to have veggies growing during the winter months. The grow station was one of the best presents the Dear Wonderful Hubby has given me. (smiles) He’s such a good person.

The Indoor Garden
The Dear Wonderful Hubby set up a growing station for me in the basement.
(His pro-tip is we don’t need special grow lights for this. Fluorescent lights with the proper lumins, etc, work perfectly fine and are super inexpensive.)
I’m happily growing some veggies over the winter.
I’m growing radishes because they are one of the fastest growing veggies, taking about 20 days from seed to harvest. I brought in the green onions and am harvesting the tops. I also planted cilantro and parsley. The Dear Wonderful Hubby feels like a billionaire when he has fresh herbs to sprinkle on food. (smiles).
I planted spinach because we have a severe lettuce and other greens shortage in my corner of the world. It is so bad restaurants are pulling salads from their menus.
I still have tomatoes that are ripening! Having fresh tomatoes in December is such a luxury!
