Sowing Seeds And Taking Names
Or, rather, recording names. So I remember which seeds I’ve placed in the reused yogurt containers. (grins)
I planted 3 seeds in every container (holes were punched in the bottom of these containers).
Two flats (i.e. reused rotisserie chicken trays) contain eggplants (those seeds were purchased from the dollar store), one flat contains mini bell peppers (those seeds were harvested from 2024’s mini bell peppers), and I also planted a couple containers of parsley.
They were then placed in the basement grow station.
And now…I wait for my favorite moments of gardening – when the baby plants first poke out of the soil! Woot!

Gardening – Eggplant Harvest
This was our first year growing eggplant and we had some adventures. (grins)
We started the plants late as we had a tough time finding seeds. (We’ve already stocked next year’s seeds, having learned this lesson). Then when the plants were about calf high, the wild bunny ate every single plant down to their very stems.
We put cages around those stems and lowered our expectations for the eggplant harvest. I didn’t think we’d get ANY eggplants. The Dear Wonderful Hubby was more optimistic.
I am happy to say… I was wrong. We have a LOT of eggplants on the plants and the weather forecast is heat and sun for October so they should grow to harvest size.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I LOVE eggplant and we’ll definitely grow it again next year!

Gardening, Climate Change And Bad Growing Years
This summer has been a VERY bad year for some gardeners in the Northern Hemisphere.
It is cold one day and extremely hot the next. There are hail storms, tornadoes, floods, drought, fires (sometimes several of these at once). The insects seem to either be missing or there are WAY too many of them. Animals like squirrels and groundhogs have been super aggressive.
It is challenging to have a productive garden.
I’ve been taking a few steps to try to increase my odds.
I grow plants as big as possible in the basement grow station. Sometimes I’ll keep ‘spares’ of plants in case the squirrels dig up and shred the ones I have recently transplanted.
I grow mini versions of some vegetables. Cherry tomatoes ripen much faster than those big beefsteak tomatoes. Mini bell peppers ripen faster than the full size bell peppers.
Growing vegetables in multiple locations sometimes also helps. The creatures are leaving the containers of eggplants situated on the deck alone, as one example. They are disturbing daily the containers of eggplants set on the grass.
