Winter Gardening Update
The ground outside might be frozen but the grow station the Dear Wonderful Hubby set up for me in the basement is thriving. (smiles)
The cilantro is growing vigorously. I harvest a bit every day to put in soups and other dishes.
We have radishes! They are in different stages of growth. We harvest a couple every week as a treat.
The spinach is struggling a bit but there’s enough to give the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I one salad each every week…which is good because spinach, lettuce and other leafy greens are in short supply at neighborhood grocery stores.
The parsley seeds Awesome Mom-in-law found in her basement were duds. Nothing grew. I think they were a few decades old so that didn’t surprise me.
It is wonderful and a privilege to have veggies growing during the winter months. The grow station was one of the best presents the Dear Wonderful Hubby has given me. (smiles) He’s such a good person.

The Indoor Garden
The Dear Wonderful Hubby set up a growing station for me in the basement.
(His pro-tip is we don’t need special grow lights for this. Fluorescent lights with the proper lumins, etc, work perfectly fine and are super inexpensive.)
I’m happily growing some veggies over the winter.
I’m growing radishes because they are one of the fastest growing veggies, taking about 20 days from seed to harvest. I brought in the green onions and am harvesting the tops. I also planted cilantro and parsley. The Dear Wonderful Hubby feels like a billionaire when he has fresh herbs to sprinkle on food. (smiles).
I planted spinach because we have a severe lettuce and other greens shortage in my corner of the world. It is so bad restaurants are pulling salads from their menus.
I still have tomatoes that are ripening! Having fresh tomatoes in December is such a luxury!

Taking The Plants Inside Our Home
In my corner of the universe, once we’ve ventured past the first frost, gardening outside the house becomes more and more challenging. Nothing much is growing above the planet’s surface when it is covered with snow. (grins)
I have the indoor plants like the snake plants (which are AWESOME at cleaning the air and are super easy to care for and to multiply).
But this year, thanks to the Dear Wonderful Hubby, I also have a growing station in the basement. He set up the lights and the shelves. I’ve harvested a gazillion veggie seeds. We’ve collected yogurt containers to use as pots. Dirt was bought in vast quantities when the garden centers were clearing products out.
Over the winter, I will be growing spinach, radishes, onions and cilantro. In the spring, I’ll start the tomatoes, bell peppers, marigolds, zinnias, green beans and peas.
I LOVE being surrounded by plants. All that nature makes me happy. (smiles)

Tomato Update
We have SO many tomatoes!
Our freezer is stuffed with them. We’ve frozen 30 plus 1.3 L/45 fluid ounce milk bags filled with tomatoes (milk bags are the BEST freezer bags). That’s enough for the entire winter.
The squirrels and the slugs have taken their share and continue to feast.
We’re now happily giving tomatoes away to neighbors and nearby loved ones. It is such a great problem to have.
The bell peppers are almost eatable size. The beans continue to produce. The carrots remain extremely tiny but we still have a couple weeks until first frost.

Tomatoes And The Mafia Squirrels
The Mafia Squirrels and I have come to an agreement.
I leave some of the ripe mini tomatoes on the low hanging branches for them.
And they leave my larger heirloom and beefsteak tomatoes alone.
(grins)
They taunt me, of course. The squirrels will eat the mini tomatoes VERY slowly while they sit on top of the fence and watch me weed the vegetable garden.
Sometimes, a bunch of them will gather and throw chestnuts at me from their perches in the chestnut tree. They chatter at me and at each other after every throw. I’m almost certain there is a contest over who can hit me. (laughs)
They are such menaces but they are adorable and I love them so much.

Tomato Update
We have a gazillion green tomatoes on the vine and the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are so fraggin’ excited about that. None of them have turned red yet. Not even the mini/cherry tomatoes.
Some will definitely be gifts to the slugs, squirrels, birds, raccoons, etc. When the tomatoes mature, we plan to eat some fresh, freeze enough for the Autumn/Winter/Spring and then give the rest away to family, friends and neighbors.
IF we are fortunate to have that many tomatoes.
Peas are being eaten as they mature. We planted them at different times so we should have fresh peas for snacks until frost.
Beans are forming. I planted those really late in the season.
The wild strawberries the squirrels gifted to us are done producing fruit. They are now pretty ground cover, as is the THREE different types of clover in our back yard (yellow, white and purple).

A Little Chaos And Strong Heroines
I watched A Little Chaos last night, a film about a female landscape artist who wins the honor of designing a part of Versailles (Kate Winslet stars in it. Alan Rickman both directed and appears in it). I loved it. I don’t understand why I haven’t heard more about this movie.
Or maybe I do.
Because the lead character is female. She’s strong, stocky, wildly intelligent and super independent. There’s a love story. Yes. But her hero makes her even stronger. She’s a brilliant engineer and a savvy leader. Strong men choose to follow her.
I suspect that makes (mostly male) critics and award voters uncomfortable. Thank goodness I write romance. Romance readers EXPECT strong heroines. They EXPECT love interests to make these heroines stronger. They EXPECT heroines to find their own solutions and not wait for someone else to save them.
They expect a heroine like Sabine De Barra, Kate Winslet’s character. Sabine has a gripping back story (she’s a widow and is dealing with her grief, something all of us have struggled with). She has numerous goals and an unique view on the world. She isn’t perfect, far from it, yet she’s sympathetic (The director, Alan Rickman, sets this up beautifully with showing Sabine’s friendship with another woman right at the beginning. This woman clearly loves Sabine and that makes me love her also.).
She’s a character I could happily write a series about.
Aside: One of my favorite parts of the movies is when the ladies at court are talking about the deaths they’ve experienced. I found it interesting that Sabine doesn’t cry yet I felt the emotion even more strongly than if she did break down. It reminded me that I don’t need tears to convey a character’s sorrow.
Another note: There is debate about whether or not Sabine is a real historical character. That there is even a discussion around this tells me the film is historically accurate enough to make me happy. It COULD have happened.

Crash And Burn
Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.
Then he meets Safyre, an infuriating human female, and he considers breaking his vow.
Safyre will do anything to save her friend, the being she loves like a sister. Dark soulful eyes, a quick wit, and a tempestuous passion won’t divert her from her mission.
Love, and a planet-destroying weapon, however, might stop her permanently.
