Gardening – Plan For A First Quick Harvest
When I’m crafting my garden plans, I always include radishes as part of the first/Spring plan.
Radish is one of the easiest, quickest, cold-friendly vegetables to grow. Both the root and the leaves can be eaten.
Eating from the garden early and sharing that bounty is a huge reward. It keeps me excited and motivated.
And it keeps everyone around me on board with the gardening. They (and I!) see results right away. They benefit from these results.
And it’s fun to pull up radishes, uncovering how big (or small – remember the leaves are edible so small is okay too) they are!
Other fast growing crops are leafy greens like spinach and lettuce, snow peas (all of the snow pea plant is edible also – the greens are delicious), and bok choy.
Consider planting a fast-to-harvest, cool-temperature-tolerant crop first.

Multiple Garden Plans
Gardeners will often talk about crafting their garden plans for the year.
These are usually plans.
Plural.
Because many of the plants we grow will have lifespans shorter than our entire gardening season. And many of the plants we grow will only flourish in specific times of the year.
Peas, for example, love cooler weather. In Canada, they flourish during the Spring and the Fall/Autumn. They might be part of our garden plans for those months.
They can be replaced with another crop during the Summer.
So we might have 3 garden plans – 1 for the Spring, 1 for the Summer, 1 for the Fall/Autumn.
Garden plans help us…well…plan. Have as many or as few as you like!
Don’t feel like you have to stick everything on one (sure-to-be chaotic) plan.

In-Ground Storage

One of the many things I love about vegetable gardening is…
The garden can serve as in-ground storage.
I can pick lettuce as I need it. I don’t need to place it in the fridge.
I don’t have to worry about herbs going bad because I can harvest them the same day I use them.
Root vegetables like radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, onions can often be left in the ground for months until we need them. No refrigeration or freezing is necessary!
The garden is truly an extension of the kitchen. And that makes me happy.

Fast To Harvest

The quickest harvest we have in the Sax household is always the radish. The type we grow doesn’t care about the cold. (grins) As long as the soil is semi-thawed, they are good to go.
And we allow some to self-seed, which means they are usually the first vegetable plants to emerge. They even beat the dandelions!
So the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are munching on radishes now.

Planting Outdoors
This is a stock photo. Our peas don’t usually look this good. (grins)
Spring is here in my corner of the universe! Woot!
That means we can start planting outdoors. We’ll be planting peas, spinach, beets, radish and cilantro. The peas will be started inside the house due to…squirrels. (shakes head) The rest will be direct sown.
I am so happy! Woot!

Arsenal considers himself to be a disposable cyborg. He drifts from assignment to assignment, forming no connections to anything or anyone. When the cyborg council requires a warrior for a high-risk mission, Arsenal volunteers. He believes no one will miss him if he dies. He doesn’t realize he’s one female’s fantasy.

Gardening – Bring Mini Bell Peppers Inside Update
In past, I grew bell peppers (full-sized or mini) from seed, starting them every January in the basement grow station.
This year, I tried something different. I brought the very successful mini bell pepper plants inside the house to overwinter!
To do this, I pruned the plants heavily, stripping off all the leaves, and I replaced the dirt with fresh ‘inside’ soil. I was told there would be some losses.
And there WERE losses. I’ve lost about a quarter of the plants. They are now dry twigs.
But the rest of the plants survived and are regrowing leaves. And we have had NO pest problems.
(smiles)
I consider that to be a win!

Starting Plants To Bring Inside The House
I started some herbs (basil and parsley) outside while the weather is still nice.
I plan to bring these inside the house when temperatures drop.
Why do I start them outside?
I have more space. I can plant a few small containers and then bring in the best of those.
I’ll have those herbs sooner. And I don’t have to turn on my basement grow station just yet.
There are some downsides to this.
Plants will need to acclimatize to the indoors and the different light levels.
There’s also a possibility of insects coming inside with the herbs.

The Love Of Compost
I love making compost.
I love the act of creating great soil amendments from kitchen scraps and plant clippings and other stuff other people might throw away. I love returning stuff that came from the earth to the earth. That cycle makes me happy.
We use the compost usually two times a year
– in the Fall/Autumn, after we’ve taken all the tomatoes and other plants out of the garden bed and are preparing it for Winter
and
in the Spring, when we’re preparing the garden bed for transplants and seeding.
So we aren’t in a rush to make compost. We have time. And we don’t turn the compost very often. (I poke a pole in it every few days to ensure it has air flow.)
We turned it recently and WOW, we have a lot of great looking ‘soil’ in there.
I’m excited to plant tomatoes and other vegetables in that compost next year!

Preserving The Harvest
This year, due to the abundance of insects, more specifically slugs, we mostly have the tomatoes to harvest from the garden.
And it has been an AWESOME tomato year. We have so many! Many more than we can eat while they’re fresh.
So we’re freezing them. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have a standalone freezer. We are chopping up the tomatoes, placing them in milk bags (this Canadian way of supplying milk makes the BEST freezer bags) and we’re putting them in the freezer. I don’t skin the tomatoes or blanche them. We’re fine with tomato skins in our soups and stir fries.
It is wonderfully reassuring to have a freezer filled with food. (smiles)
