Rereading Stories Before Claiming Cure’s Release
Claiming Cure, the third core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series, is releasing on Tuesday (Monday night if you’ve pre-ordered it)! Woot!
Claiming Cure can be read on its own. But I know some of my dear reading buddies (big hugs) like to reread stories before a new release.
The best story to reread is Drift Would, of course. Drift is Cure’s mission partner and that story overlaps in the timeline with Claiming Cure.
Strike Zone, the first story in the series, is a great choice also.
Doc makes a brief ‘appearance’ in Claiming Cure. His story is Doc’s Orders. That features a pandemic so if you have trauma from our own ongoing pandemic here on Earth, it might not be the best choice for you. (gentle hugs)
Grudge is also mentioned. His ‘explosive’ story is Baring Grudge.
Other than that…maybe Intrepid Encounter? Intrepid is Cure’s captain.

Eggshells In The Garden
There has been a lot of debate recently in the gardening world around adding eggshells to the garden.
One of the arguments against it is that eggshells take years to break down.
I hopefully have years of gardening left. (grins)
I don’t approach the building of soil as a quick process. Heck, leaves takes two years to break down completely and they are AWESOME at building healthy soil.
Building great soil takes time.
Another argument is that eggshells can add bad stuff like salmonella to the garden.
I add eggshells at the END of the growing season. 4 or 5 or more months will pass before I plant in that soil. By then, the threat of salmonella is long gone.
I also place compost, a thick layer of leaves and some coffee grounds on top of the crushed eggshells (mostly to discourage Rocky The Raccoon from digging in the bed). That adds more barriers.
The benefits of crushed eggshells outweigh the downsides for me.
They are a great source of calcium and other nutrients. They are natural. The worms love them. Placing eggshells in the garden keeps them out of the landfill. And they are absolutely free.

He checked Drift’s specs, losing himself in that data instead. “Your heart rate has slowed.”
“Our current speed won’t break any records.” The pilot expressed his dissatisfaction with their progress. “And Captain chose me for this mission because arriving at Cancri B as quickly as possible is critical for its success.”
Cure was chosen because he had a contact on the planet.
That contact, however, wasn’t keen on meeting with him. Unless that meeting resulted in a repair for the male’s patients.
“According to the charts, there’s nothing in front of us except open space.” Drift continued to talk through his processing. “But the charts have been extremely inaccurate thus far.”
The probability of a collision with a planet or star or asteroid belt was low—the male was a skilled pilot. But it wasn’t 0.0000 percent.
Cure reviewed the contents of the medic packs stored on the escape pods.
“It is too risky to increase our speed.” Drift’s shoulders slumped. “I’ll have to wait until the return trip to break speed records. We’ll document everything we come across and chart our route along the same path.”
Cure didn’t care about breaking speed records. That was solely Drift’s goal. But he liked the idea of returning to the Dauntless and his medic bay faster.
“Our ship will be lighter also.” Drift’s eyes glimmered with humor. “Especially if we leave the Rayan Skin Restorer with your contact on Cancri B.”
“The Rayan Skin Restorer will be returning with us.” Cure frowned at the male.
That piece of medical machinery had been a gift from Power, the leader of the cyborg council, and it was one of Cure’s most valued possessions.
If he’d had access to a Rayan Skin Restorer while he was under the Humanoid Alliance’s control, he could have repaired wounds faster. And 93.2563 percent of the warriors condemned to decommissioning would have escaped that fate.
Grief gripped him.
Temporarily.
He reviewed restoration rates, and that emotion receded.
“Don’t you want to gift the Rayan Skin Restorer to your humanoid male contact?” Drift’s tone indicated he was teasing.
“No.” Cure was serious about all medical equipment and the Rayan Skin Restorer in particular. “I’m not gifting it to my humanoid male contact.”
Nothing could convince him to part with it.
Drift laughed. The fool didn’t realize how important that piece of equipment was.
Cure didn’t bother to enlighten him. He ignored his mission partner and studied the data C had sent him.
A quick review of it relayed that any attempts to repair those Cancri patients were futile. 100.0000 percent of the tumors detailed were past the point of treatment.
And repairing the humanoids also wasn’t part of Cure’s assigned mission. They were to investigate if there was a Humanoid Alliance presence on the planet and whether or not a superweapon was being fabricated. That was the extent of their assignment.
But Cure was a medic first and foremost, and he would give the male his projections.
A life might be saved based on that intel.
That wouldn’t offset all the others that had been lost. He pushed those memories to the back of his processors. But it would make a difference to that one being.

Claiming Cure And Friends
Does Cure, the medic hero of Claiming Cure, consider Drift to be a friend?
That’s a difficult question to answer because being an officer on the Dauntless, Drift is also Cure’s patient. There has to be a bit of professional distance between them.
But Cure LIKES Drift. He likes spending time with him. And he would die to protect the pilot if that was necessary.
That is pretty dang close to friendship!

Preparing The Garden For Next Year
We rarely (as in once every 10 years or so) purchase fertilizer or amendments for our gardens.
We don’t need to do this. We’re fortunate that nature provides everything we need.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I prep the vegetable gardens in the Fall/Autumn.
The first layer is a sprinkle of crushed eggshells. This goes on the bottom of the prep lasagne as to ensure it doesn’t attract Rocky the Raccoon or other critters. Eggshells are a long term investment. They take a while to break down. But we plan to have a garden for a long while so we’re okay with waiting. (smiles)
The next layer is compost made from kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, leaves and other yard waste.
Then we add a knee deep layer of leaves. Leaves are super rich in minerals and nutrients. They are GOLD for the garden and are the main reason why we don’t need additional fertilizer or amendments. We wet the leaves and we place large sticks on top of the beds to keep the leaves in place.
The final layer consists of coffee grounds we obtain from nearby coffee shops.
That’s it! (smiles)
The garden beds ‘rest’ all winter. They are covered with snow, are rained on, dried out, frozen, thawed.
And by spring, the leaves have turned into a layer of mulch, the coffee grounds and compost are neutralized and the beds are ready to plant in!

Cyra, the medic heroine of Claiming Cure, has the goal of ensuring all her patients on Cancri B remain alive and healthy for as long as possible.
To do that, she seeks to rid the planet of the Humanoid Alliance, the beings causing her patients to become ill with tumors, AND she seeks to find a cure for the tumors.
Cure, the medic hero, has the goal of stopping the Humanoid Alliance’s build of a sector-destroying weapon. To do that, he will likely also attempt to rid the planet of their presence.
He doesn’t intend to help Cyra find a cure for the tumors.

Muse Food – Albino Snails
The Dear Wonderful Hubby spotted this ‘albino’ snail in Bermuda.
Almost every species, including humans, has albinoes.
These lifeforms have no melanin. Their skin, fur, feathers, or, in the case of plants, leaves are typically white. And they usually have pink or extremely pale blue eyes.
If this happens here on Earth, it COULD happen on alien planets. It might be the standard on alien planets and wouldn’t that impact life there significantly?
