Gardening – Collecting Leaves And Preparing For Drought

By Cynthia Sax on September 23, 2026

I heard somewhere that 1 molecule of organic matter in our soil has the ability to hold onto 4 molecules of water.

Which is VERY good information to have.

Because the possibility of drought increases every year as climate change progresses.

And it is super easy and often free to add organic matter to the soil.

In my corner of the world, for example, leaves are plentiful. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I collect as many as we can (from our yard and from the school yards) and we cover our garden beds with them. We also store them in the chicken wire ‘bins’ we’ve set up on a dark never-walked-upon part of the yard. They break down into gorgeous leaf mold. And we add leaves to our compost bins.

Kitchen vegetable and fruit waste can be turned into compost either in a compost bin or simply in a hole dug and afterwards covered up in the garden. This is simple and easy to do.

Used coffee grounds, obtained for free from neighborhood coffee shops, can be spread over lawns and garden beds and put in compost bins.

There are a gazillion free ways to add organic matter to our soil. And this could very much make the difference between our plants surviving or perishing next growing season.

Containers For Composting

By Cynthia Sax on February 3, 2023

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have always composted. There is something wonderful about returning fruits, veggies, leaves and other plant materials to the earth. Composting also produces free high quality dirt and that’s the best price going. (grins)

When our city started their mass composting program, collecting our compostable stuff at the curb, I got a bit lazy about our own backyard composting. But now that we have the vegetable garden, I’ve gotten serious about it again.

When we first started composting, before the city collection program, the city supplied wonderful backyard composting bins to residents. Silly me. I only took one of them. We’re still using that compost bin today.

But we’ll soon need at least one, maybe two additional composting bins. We’ll likely go the cheapie garbage bin route. We’ll drill holes in the bottom and sides of a big garbage bin and voila, along with a well-sealing lid (to keep the critters and rain out), we’ll have a new composting bin.

It is THAT easy to create a composting bin. Some balcony gardeners create them using small pails.

Raw Desires

His human female is attempting to kill him.
This cyborg finds that adorable.

Raw, a K model cyborg, is one of the lucky warriors who has located his genetic match. He hears his human female’s voice over the communication lines and immediately processes she is his.

Winning her affections will be a greater challenge. Battle has always been Raw’s focus. The rough-and-tough warrior has no idea how to engage anyone’s tender emotions.

Fortunately, he isn’t alone in the universe. His unmatched male friends help him craft a plan.

All Raw has to do is relay a few unsettlingly sweet words to his female and give her the thoroughly unfunctional wall decoration he has obtained. He projects she will then jump into his big, strong arms and beg him to claim her.

Taytu isn’t jumping anywhere. She has one mission—kill every cyborg in existence.

The huge, handsome male traveling to meet with her is her first target. His rough hands, firm lips, and sparkling, energy-infused eyes won’t save him from her vengeance. She has trained vigorously for this moment, and she won’t fail at her assigned task.

The cyborg will die.

Raw Desires is an enemies-to-lovers Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.
