Breathing Vapor And The Tau Cetian Language

By Cynthia Sax on November 25, 2015

Being a former farm girl, I know that two species have to be almost genetically identical to produce fertile offspring, Donkeys and horses might look similar but they are unlikely to produce fertile offspring (unlikely because there are genetic anomalies).

This is why I believe in the common ancestry theory—that humans and aliens (including all humanoids not originating on Earth) in SciFi romances have common ancestors. That’s why they can make babies.

If their biology is similar to ours, it makes sense that their culture and their languages are similar also. Instead of inventing new alien languages, I borrow from existing Earth languages. (Learning Earth languages also helps us in the here and now. It comes in handy when I travel or when I meet someone from a different country.)

In Breathing Vapor (and the upcoming Crash And Burn), the Tau Cetians speak (roughly) Hawaiian. Pepe roughly means baby. Aumakua is a protective deity. Kokami is a Hawaiian cuss word.

If the words sound familiar, that’s why. (grins)

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Cyn-Sights: Alien Languages

By Cynthia Sax on January 30, 2013

Many SciFi writers invent their own alien languages.

I don’t.

I use existing languages. They could be Native American languages or Polish or Croatian or, in the case of Warlord’s Bounty, Mongolian. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of languages in the world today. I use one of those.

Why?

Because it doesn’t benefit you, my reading buddies, to learn a language I’ve invented. No one except my characters would ever use that language. You won’t hear it on the streets of New York. You won’t meet someone from that planet/country and be able to share a word, showing respect for their culture and creating a bond between you.

But maybe some day, you’ll be able to use Mongolian (Warlord’s Bounty) or Polish (Moonbeam) or German (my dragon shifters). Best of all, you’ll know some beautiful words in that language. You’ll know that gerel means light in Mongolian. You’ll be able to say ‘I love you’ in Polish. You’ll know colors in German (my dragons are named after their colors).

Maybe your world will change because of that knowledge. Maybe you’ll make another person’s world a happier place.

I also feel if a species is so closely related to humans to be able to produce fertile children, continuing their species, it is also likely that species and humans originated from a common place. If they are biologically close, they could also be linguistically close.

Yes, I’ve thought about this quite a bit. I made a conscious decision to use existing languages when I first started writing SciFi. For me, it was the only logical choice. Oh, I just had a Spock moment, didn’t I? (grins)

WARLORD’S BOUNTY
By Cynthia Sax
Now Available From Ellora’s Cave

Warlords Bounty

The bigger the bounty, the more dangerous the fugitive.

Khan, a Chamele warlord, has a huge bounty on his head. His enemy is willing to pay an outrageous amount to secure him. Khan wants to be apprehended, especially if the bounty hunter capturing him is a brown-eyed female with razor-sharp daggers and an even sharper tongue. He’ll allow her to subdue him sexually, his passion and prowess not inhibited by restraints, and when she collects her bounty, he’ll collect his revenge, killing his enemy and claiming his little bounty hunter forever.

Zeta doesn’t do forever. She captures the worst scum in the galaxy and trades them for credits. Khan is fierce and sexy and the most dominant male she has ever encountered, but he is also a fugitive, and once she sates herself with his body, she’ll betray him. It is her job.
