Two days ago (yes, on Canadian Thanksgiving), a western conifer seed bug entered the house via a fan vent. These awesome armored-looking bugs moved really, really slowly (they fly quickly, however). Everything seems to be in slow motion for them.
Our visitor exited the fan vent in the main bathroom, turned his head slowly from side to side. He was likely wondering where on the Earth he was.
He looked at me.
I looked back at him.
He continued to look at me, not moving.
I retrieved the flyswatter, carefully slid it under him and transferred him outside. He didn’t want to leave the flyswatter. I had to nudge him off it.
Once he was on the ground, he slowly turned his head and looked back at me.
I don’t know what he was expecting me to do. I left him there. (grins)
Yesterday, as I was gardening, a western conifer seed bug (not often spotted in my neighborhood) landed on a plant beside me.
He looked at me.
I looked back at him.
He very slowly waved one of his front legs at me.
I like to think he was the same insect and he was saying hi. (smiles)

Reemerging From The Pandemic Cave
Last week, the Dear Wonderful Hubby went to dinner with clients for the first time since the pandemic began. Everyone in the restaurant was fully vaxxed (that’s the law in our city).
He is also attending his first post pandemic conference this month in Vegas, will be answering questions (masked) in his employer’s booth. Everyone at the conference should be fully vaxxed. Booth workers will be tested every morning.
It has been a long time since we enjoyed face-to-face meetings. I feel like one of the cyborgs emerging from an underground laboratory after many human lifespans of seclusion. Everything feels new. The sun is a bit too bright. (grins) We have to relearn the world.
But I’m also excited. There are more possibilities. Anything (preferably positive) could happen.

Hawks And Squirrels
A gorgeous red-tailed hawk has made our neighborhood his home. Yesterday, he was circling in the beautiful blue sky, looking for prey.
The Mafia Squirrels were frantic. They scurried to hide from the hawk and the cover they sought was inside our house. They were knocking on the windows and on the back deck’s sliding doors, chattering loudly for us to let them in. Their eyes were wide with fear and I wanted to open the doors… except I knew it would be almost impossible to get the squirrels out of the house once the danger had passed.
Thankfully, all the Mafia Squirrels in our backyard survived.
But it made me think about how they viewed us, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I, as allies in that instant. Normally, the Mafia Squirrels view us as encroachers onto turf they believe belongs to them. Yesterday, we were seen as a means of potential assistance.
Malice, the hero in Containing Malice, is in a similar situation. He views Illona, the human heroine, as his enemy but she might, just might become his greatest ally.

The Mafia Squirrels
I’ve shared a story about our backyard Mafia Squirrels on Dragon’s Book Hoarde.

“In the Fall, the Mafia Squirrels hide the excess food on our exterior windowsills and in the barbeque and other places. If we touch it, we invoke their wrath. During the Winter, they hide their ill-gotten gains in the snow.
That creates a problem in the Spring (right now). The snow melts and birds can spot these treats from the sky. When the birds swoop down to eat the bounty on the ground, they also see the hoards on the windowsills.
This happens almost every year. And the scenario unfolds usually the same way.
It is total chaos, an all-out war between the birds and the Mafia Squirrels.”

Laundry Day In The Sax Household
Today is laundry day in the Sax household or, as I jokingly refer to it, a day of good, clean fun. (grins) I heard that groan. That was a terrible joke, wasn’t it?
As there are only two humans – the Dear Wonderful Hubby and myself – currently living in our house, laundry day happens every two weeks. It IS a chore. Both of us dread doing it. But it has to occur and we try to make it fun. We have jokes and we have a playlist.
One of our favorite songs is a tweak on Limahl’s The Neverending Story ( Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHytjEj7B9g ) except it is called The Neverending Laundry.
Another favorite song is a Laundry Calling spin on The Clash’s London Calling ( Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfK-WX2pa8c ). We sing that whenever the dryer buzzer goes off, joking about being servants to the all mighty dryer.
When responding to the dryer buzzer, I usually do my best Igor from Young Frankenstein impression (I love that Mel Brooks movie), responding with “Yes, Master.” LOL I’m horrible at it yet it always makes the Dear Wonderful Hubby laugh.

Dear Wonderful Hubby Stories – Smiley Faces On Toast
The Dear Wonderful Hubby is not a morning person. He isn’t grumpy (his default mood is happy) but it takes him a while to wake up.
So I am usually the one who makes breakfast.
Sometimes I’m inspired and I’ll make an omelette or scrambled eggs. Most days, I’m not very wide awake myself and I make toast for both of us.
I try to add a little drama to these rather boring breakfasts by doing things like putting the raisins on his peanut butter-topped toast in the shape of a happy face. The Dear Wonderful Hubby LOVES this. He always sits in his chair, looks down at the smiley face and he smiles also.
He’s convinced the happy face makes the toast taste better…which led to this conversation with a coworker this morning.
Coworker: (on phone) All my son likes to eat is peanut butter and toast. I can’t get him to eat anything else.
Dear Wonderful Hubby: Have you tried adding raisins?
Coworker: He wouldn’t eat it.
Dear Wonderful Hubby: Were the raisins in the shape of a happy face? (says this sincerely as though that makes a difference) That’s how my wife makes it.
(grins) He makes me smile so hard.

Dear Wonderful Hubby Stories – Living With A Writer
I was laughing this morning because the Dear Wonderful Hubby was making scrambled eggs and he was choosing eggs from the carton in a completely random way, the same way he does almost everything else (he once mowed the lawn in an X pattern).
People, upon meeting us, usually think I’m the flighty or spontaneous person in the relationship. I’m the writer. He works for big corporate as a salesperson. The myth of the writer is we’re all over the place thought-wise.
Which is ridiculously funny.
Writers have to keep track of entire worlds, multiple plots, hundreds of characters. Many of us often get random ideas. That’s true. But we have to organize those ideas into cohesive stories.
That takes focus.
In contrast, one of the true myths about writers is, once you push past the introvert super shield many of us (but not all) erect around us, we can be entertaining and ‘interesting’ to live with.
Some people say that as though it is a bad thing. It isn’t a bad thing. Not usually.
Whenever the Dear Wonderful Hubby is bored or needs to be distracted or is trying to stay awake during a long drive, he’ll comment on a random thing and I’ll usually spin that observation into an action-packed story that often involves either explosions or decapitations. (grins)
A couple years ago, before the Great Pause, we were on a cruise ship and there wasn’t much entertainment on board. We stood on a deck, looked out at the water and I started telling him a story about a mermaid who had fallen in love with a dolphin (neither the mermaid’s parents nor the dolphin’s parents approved of their relationship). There was quite a bit of conflict and some bloodshed in this tale.
The night air was cool and we turned to go back to the closed portion of the ship. Two women, fellow passengers yet complete strangers who had been standing beside us, stopped us and told us we couldn’t go, not yet. They needed to hear the rest of the story. (grins)
So yes, writers can be entertaining but we usually have some (not award-winning levels but semi-normal) organization skills.

Dear Wonderful Hubby Stories – He Misses You
I often share stories about my Dear Wonderful Hubby on Facebook.
I started doing this because I liked having a record of all the jokes we share and the fun we have.
And reading and writing buddies seemed to enjoy hearing about these snippets of our life.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby also likes that buddies know about him because he knows about you. (grins) I tell him about you, about the messages you send me, the comments you make.
With my Facebook account being down, I thought I’d share those stories here (and on Instagram).
