Mafia Squirrel Dance Party Weekends
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spend a lot of time in our back yard during the weekdays, from Monday to Friday. We live in the city and most of our neighbors are at work or completing other tasks. It is peaceful and relaxing.
During the weekends, we tend to give our now-at-home neighbors that same peacefulness. We avoid our fenced in back yard and allow them the illusion they’re alone with nature.
The Mafia Squirrels and other non-human creatures in the neighborhood have noticed that routine.
So they tend to spend the weekends in OUR back yard, avoiding the humans rummaging around in other areas.
Yes, it is a Mafia Squirrel Dance Party in our back yard every weekend.

Although the Mafia Squirrels are usually quite territorial during the rest of the week, they tolerate…sort of…the proximity of their rivals for those couple days.
It is like a Disney movie. Except they, unfortunately, don’t clean our home.

I continue to garden. I continue to work on writing projects. And I continue to watch the events unrolling in the US and elsewhere, trying to figure out when it will be safe for my reading buddies to read my stories again. (big hugs) I hope that will be soon!
Have a wonderful week, my friends. (more hugs) Be like this pretty kitty and stop and watch the birds for a moment or two. Listen to their songs. Try to guess what they’re singing about. Revel in the realization that we are living on a planet with feathered flying creatures. That is all sorts of amazing!

Cyborg Sizzle Homeland Omnibus

Making Someone’s Life A Little Bit Better
It is dang easy to make someone’s life a little bit better.
(And that is SO needed at the moment.)
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I uncovered that fact recently.
We were crossing a parking lot.
It was dark.
It was cold.
It was sleeting.
A man was crossing the parking lot in the other direction, walking toward us.
He was carrying 3 filled reusable grocery bags in each hand and was likely walking to his home.
After he passed us, we heard a loud noise, a howl and some cussing.
We turned around.
One of the reusable bags the man had clearly just purchased had blown out its bottom.
There were cans EVERYWHERE.
In puddles. In the snow. In the muck.
The man was cussing and kicking the slush and was clearly dangling on the edge of darkness.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I approached him.
We smiled gently, held out our reusable bags and offered them to him.
Friends, I thought the man was going to burst into tears.
He was SO touched by the offer.
He had other reusable bags and didn’t take ours.
But he was no longer alone, you know?
Someone, TWO someones, cared about him and his VERY BAD DAY.
When we left him, he almost looked…happy.
He was definitely more stable.
And all it took was an offer and a smile and some understanding.
THAT is how easy it is to make someone’s world a little bit better.
You can do the same – by smiling at that stressed out mom standing on the sidewalk, arguing with her child or by telling the cashier at the grocery store they’re doing a great job or by doing some other tiny-for-you thing that will likely be A BIG DEAL for the other person.

It is THAT easy.

The Mafia Squirrels And A Bit Of Sun
It is a tad bit chilly in my corner of the universe.
Almost every morning, I see a line up of Mafia Squirrels lying flat on their furry little stomachs on top of the wooden fence, catching a bit of sun.
They’re adorable and the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I deliberately don’t go into the backyard because we don’t want to disturb their morning ritual.

Saying I Love You And Sincerity
There was a discussion recently about whether or not people who say ‘I love you’ often are sincere about that love.
My first reaction (and this might very well be the wrong reaction) when I hear people wonder why other say ‘I love you’ so often is… they’re fortunate. They’ve never lost someone they’ve loved and felt the regret of not having told them how they felt one more time.
I HAVE experienced that regret and I’m determined never to feel it again. So I tell people I love them at the end of every phone call. And I tell them that every time we part. I want ‘I love you’ to be the last words they hear from me. They should never doubt how I feel about them.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby is also a words of love type of guy. He needs to hear ‘I love you’ to feel loved. And he needs to say it when he feels that emotion. That’s important to him.
I tell the Dear Wonderful Hubby I love him hundreds of times a day. That makes him happy and it is the absolute truth. I love him to bits. (grins)

Grin And Bare Him
This cyborg will be the warrior his female requires.

Start Of Fall/Autumn
I know yesterday was officially the first day of Fall/Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere but I have been thinking Autumn thoughts since September 1st. (grins)
It is time to wind down the garden for 2022 but also prepare it for Spring 2023.
I read a recent study that revealed bumblebees, due to climate change, were emerging from their homes before the flowers they normally live off presented themselves. This is causing them great strife.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are planting crocus, hoping the Mafia Squirrels don’t eat those bulbs (We bought the squirrel resistant kind but that only slows the furry little menaces. They don’t stop them.). Crocus, in my area of the world, often bloom before the snow melt and the bumblebees LOVE them.
To prepare for Autumn, I’m also breaking out the sweaters so we’re ready for the cooler weather. (smiles) And we’re stocking up on apple cider.

Tomatoes And The Mafia Squirrels
The Mafia Squirrels and I have come to an agreement.
I leave some of the ripe mini tomatoes on the low hanging branches for them.
And they leave my larger heirloom and beefsteak tomatoes alone.
(grins)
They taunt me, of course. The squirrels will eat the mini tomatoes VERY slowly while they sit on top of the fence and watch me weed the vegetable garden.
Sometimes, a bunch of them will gather and throw chestnuts at me from their perches in the chestnut tree. They chatter at me and at each other after every throw. I’m almost certain there is a contest over who can hit me. (laughs)
They are such menaces but they are adorable and I love them so much.

Living In A Musical
A buddy and I were talking about musicals. She thought it was funny that people just burst into song at random times.
I realized…
Not everyone has a soundtrack to their day. (grins)
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have songs for almost every occasion. He knows, for example, I’m looking at my reviews because I sing the Johnny Cash version of Hurt.
When we do laundry, we tweak the lyrics of the Neverending story theme song to Neverending Laundry.
We often start the weekend with Mufasa’s Friday.
We are truly living in a musical. (laughs)

The Tomato Saga
Up north, when I was a kid, we didn’t care if a tomato was indeterminate (never stopped growing) or determinate (only grew to a certain size).
Heck. I didn’t even know there were different kinds of tomatoes when I was younger. We harvested seeds from the previous year’s tomatoes to grow.
Were they heirloom, hybrid, beefsteak, other? We didn’t know.
And it didn’t really matter. Our growing season was so short, if we started the tomatoes from seed outside, they never grew very tall.
Frost would come when the tomatoes were still green. We’d pick them, wrap them in newspaper, put them in the cool unfinished basement to ripen.
Each plant, if we were lucky, would give us about 4 or 5 tomatoes. That was a good harvest for us.
I warned my city-boy Dear Wonderful Hubby we’d likely get 4 or 5 tomatoes per plant this year. We had a lot of successful plants (around 30 of them). That yield would give us enough tomatoes for the year plus we’d have some extras to give to loved ones.
I miscalculated.
(sheepish grin)
We started the tomato plants inside the house and we’re growing them in the south (of Canada) now. We have a MUCH longer growing season.
And I think some of the plants are indeterminate because they seem to produce more flowers every dang day.
Anyhoo… if all those flowers bear tomatoes, we’ll likely have enough tomatoes to feed our entire neighborhood.
That is a happy problem to have.

The Adventures Of A Colombian White-Faced Capuchin
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I traveled to Roatán and while we were there, we visited a sloth sanctuary. The sloth sanctuary also hosted Colombian white-faced capuchins.
Most of them were in huge cages. This little guy was an escape artist.
The tour guide told us not to worry about him. When he got hungry, he’d return to a cage.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I laughed our fool heads off because we’d just watched this Colombian white-faced capuchin meet up with one of his caged buddies. The caged buddy had passed him food through the wires.
So no, we don’t think he’ll ever return to a cage. He has the best of both worlds. He’s free AND he doesn’t have to work too hard for food.
