Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – April 20
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this pretty kitty grooming herself in Casablanca, Morocco.
I continue to work on some writing projects and I’ve sent out more communications (grins) to possible outlets for that writing.
I’m also watching the events happening in the US and in the rest of the world. Once things revert to semi-normal, I’ll request covers for the Moonbeam stories and attempt to publish them.
I’m ever hopeful that will happen soon. (smiles)

A cyborg warrior and a Rebel female’s first mission together might be their last.
Arsenal considers himself to be a disposable cyborg. He drifts from assignment to assignment, forming no connections to anything or anyone. When the cyborg council requires a warrior for a high-risk mission, Arsenal volunteers. He believes no one will miss him if he dies. He doesn’t realize he’s one female’s fantasy.

Small Acts
Today, I took 2 additional minutes out of my busy day and I picked up 3 pieces of trash on my walk to the neighborhood store.
That was trash, plastics specifically, a bird could have mistakenly fed to her babies, inadvertently killing them. That was trash that could have blocked a plant from growing. That was trash that could have killed millions of beneficial microbes in the soil.
I stopped those disasters from happening.
By taking 2 minutes to pick that trash up.
Was there more trash to pick up?
Yes. I didn’t have the time allocated to pick up all of it. That would take weeks.
And not picking up ALL of the trash is okay.
My small seemingly insufficient act made the world a better and more beautiful place!

Look Down
Today, I stopped for a couple moments and watched some pill bugs navigate their way around a stick. I love those little creatures.
(There’s a reason the miljoonasuuts in stories like Dominance And Dissent resemble pill bugs. They are miraculous lifeforms.)
I loved how calm, how…right watching them for a couple moments made me.
I noticed the blades of grass, the leaves of a dandelion, the other life around them. Isn’t it amazing that we live on a planet with such abundance?
I’m dang grateful to be able to witness all this!

Frugal Frost Coverings
The predicted last frost date in my corner of the world is May 10th.
I’ve already planted cilantro, beets, spinach and peas outside in the garden. These veggies ARE frost tolerant. They love the cooler weather. But I still prefer to protect them a bit from predicted frosts.
To do that, we cover them. When I was a kid, on our for-personal-use farm, what folks would call a homestead in 2025, we would toss a bed sheet over the plants to protect them.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I don’t have that large of a vegetable garden. We use buckets and other containers to cover our plants overnight during frosts.
Our favorite frost coverings are empty washed and dried KFC (chicken) buckets. It gives us one more use for them.
During frosts, our backyard is a bright advertisement for fried chicken.

Camels In Doha, Qatar
Last week, we chatted about the beautiful horses travelers can see for free in Doha, Qatar.
The camel pen is right next door to the horse pen in the old city! And it is open for viewing also.
I don’t find camels beautiful. (grins) They are very similar to moose (I adore moose) in their usual faces and forms. But they are magnificent. And they are strong. And they DEFINITELY have unique personalities, which makes them a lot of fun to watch.
This camel looks like he’s yelling over the fence at the neighbors.
This camel stole a ‘kiss’ while I was distracting her pen mate.

Muse Food – Grouping Like Things
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this collection of smooth, triangular boulders in Hong Kong.
One such boulder would have been interesting. But it likely would have gotten lost in the rest of the display.
Four similar-looking boulders, however, grab our attention. We notice them. We notice their shape, their colors, their size.
Writers use this same technique in stories. We employ symbolism more than once (I use it around three times or more), for example, because that ensures readers notice it. We repeat a key idea multiple times in slightly different ways.
Grouping like things or like ideas is powerful. Use it in your own writing!

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – April 13th

I continue to work on my semi-secret writing projects.

I received a rejection.
(shrugs)
That’s to be expected! I’m trying something completely different, outside of traditional publishing, and not every entity will be open to that innovation.
I will simply approach another entity. It is much like dating. I only need to find one perfect-for-me match.
Have a wonderful week, my friends. (tackle hugs) Think back on a ‘rejection’ or a ‘failure’ that turned out to be a GREAT thing. We all have a few of those, don’t we? For example, I was once turned down for a job for a company that less than a year later was involved in a HUGE scandal. Some people in the department I had applied for went to prison. That rejection turned out to be a VERY good thing. (shakes head) Sometimes what we think is bad luck is truly good luck.

The Fate Of My Newsletter
Some reading buddies have reached out to me. They worry they aren’t being sent my in-the-past monthly newsletter.
I’ve temporarily put my newsletter on hold.
There are some proposed laws in the US at the State level that would designate anyone receiving steamy newsletters or other steamy materials as a criminal.
I would be devastated if anyone was throw in jail or worse because I sent them some dirty jokes or an update on beloved characters!
My stars. That would be a nightmare for me.
And I can’t believe that is even a consideration. It feels unreal.
But it IS reality and so…the newsletter is on hold until I can be assured it is safe for you and other reading buddies to receive it.
