Saying Farewell To 2024
2024 was an action-packed year.
I published three cyborg romances – Strike Zone, Drift Would, and Claiming Cure.
Due to Project 2025 in the US, I ended the Dauntless Cyborgs series early and have paused publishing new stories. That was super dramatic. (winces) But it was necessary and I was able to provide you with a solid series ending.
I read some amazing romance novels written by other writers this year. The skill and storytelling happening now is out-of-this-world good.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I traveled. We had some planned and some not-planned adventures.
We gardened and had the BEST YEAR IN DECADES for butterflies and bees and other critters in our part of the universe. That was a gift.
2024 certainly wasn’t all sunshine and cute kittens. No year ever is. But we had fun and we consider ourselves to be fortunate to have experienced it. (smiles)

Muse Food – Ducks At Universal Studios
A few years ago, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking around Universal Studios in Florida. The Dear Wonderful Hubby teased me because we were surrounded by superheroes and fantastical rides and amazing displays and I would get super excited when I spotted wildlife.
Like these sleeping ducks. (smiles) Aren’t they adorable?
We look for what we are trained to see. A warrior sees threats and possible danger. A medic sees wounds and illnesses to be cured. I see wildlife.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – December 29
I’ve been sleeping in, reading a LOT, and spending time with the Dear Wonderful Hubby and other loved ones. (big happy sigh) It has been GLORIOUS.
This upcoming week should, hopefully, be as relaxing. I didn’t realize how much I needed to unwind until I did it. Isn’t that usually the way? (laughs)
Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Try something new. This could be baking gingerbread cookies from scratch. Or tackling a new-to-you craft. Or using a new-to-you word. For The Love Of Soft Gingerbread
(These are stock photo gingerbread cookies. Mine looked very similar except they were in the classic circle/drinking glass cookie cutter shape. – grins)
I LOVE soft gingerbread cookies. Every year in the past, I’ve sent the Dear Wonderful Hubby out on a quest to find store-bought soft gingerbread cookies. In recent years, he has been unsuccessful.
This year, my diet is low carb and I knew it would be impossible to find low carb soft gingerbread cookies.
So I made some.
And you know what? It was super easy! And they were GOOD.
Yes, all these years, I could have been making soft gingerbread cookies myself. I would have saved the Dear Wonderful Hubby from a time-consuming quest and myself from disappointment!
(laughs)
I’m such a dumba$$.
Sometimes we need to be pushed out of our comfort zones.
And that ends up being a very good (and delicious) thing.

Choosing Your Battles
Power, the self-appointed leader of the Cyborg Council, is extremely reluctant to assign resources outside of cyborg-controlled space. He authorizes sending only a small team into another sector to investigate the possibility of a Humanoid Alliance-manufactured super weapon.
Power processes fighting numerous battles in numerous places all at the same time increases the likelihood of failure, of defeat, of cyborg deaths.
The baddies know this also.
Fascists know, for example, if the same X number of rebels try to battle the banning of steamy romance novels AND deportations AND fascism in schools AND the imprisonment of GLBTQ+ members AND…922 pages of other terrible things all at the same time, those rebels will be overwhelmed and the Fascists will win some of those battles.
We should ensure all battles are fought. But different people should, ideally, be fighting those battles.
The Fascists have ‘teams’ to rollout their nastiness. We need to have teams also.
So choose your battles. And fight hard, my friends. (big hugs)
(The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have already made our choices. We based our decision on how much we believe we can help with the winning of those battles. We don’t know anything about fighting book banning, for example. So that isn’t one of the fights we’re focusing on. There are other battles we can better assist with.)

Throwback Thursday – Provoking Odium
Provoking Odium is a Beauty And The Beast story. (smiles) That’s one of my favorite tropes.
Briella, Provoking Odium’s human heroine, is nicknamed The Beast. She flies like a wild thing. Not many beings have skills in the air like she does. And she’s fearless. But I suspect most beings who call her Beast do so because she is severely scarred.
Odium, Provoking Odium’s cyborg hero, is physically perfect. His nanocybotics ensured he didn’t scar from the many wounds he endured over his long lifespan. And he was manufactured to look like the designer’s ideal (yet very much larger) human male.

Snow Magic
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I flew home via London, England yesterday, on Christmas Eve.
The flight was packed with kids.
As we left London, some of them (stationed all over the plane) sang ‘Rain, rain, go away.’
On repeat.
For at least a half hour.
(I fell asleep after that.)
When we approached Toronto, we saw that the city was blanketed with a layer of fresh white snow.
One child whispered with wonder, “Snow.”
“Snow, mommy, snow.” This was said louder by another child.
Soon, it became a chant by kids seated all over the plane. I couldn’t understand some of the languages spoken but I KNEW what they were repeating.
Snow.
Snow.
Snow.
A child started singing the ‘Do you want to build a snowman’ song and other kids quickly joined in.
It was magical.
(smiles)
Truly magical as this snow had arrived on Monday, the 23rd, and we’re expecting 3 mm of rain on Friday, the 27th.

Gifts For Gardeners
If you’re looking for last minute gifts for a beloved gardener in your life, here are some things that I truly enjoy receiving…
Bamboo stakes are ALWAYS useful. I use them for my tomatoes and anything else that I want to climb upward. They are great for extra support for chicken wire corrals and other things. They also break down over time so gardeners like myself need a constant supply of them.
Heirloom seeds are usually appreciated. They’re a little pricier than non-heirloom seeds but they also come in funky varieties that your gardener is unlikely to already have.
A great trowel is an awesome gift. Your gardener might not use it right away. They might already have a trowel. But they will likely either break (it happens!) or misplace the one they are currently using and need another.
Gardening gloves, the soft cotton kind, are always appreciated. Again, they wear out and get dirty (needing a wash) and are sometimes lost. Plus they come in wonderful patterns (like starfish! Or planets! Or ‘F*ck Plants’! – grins). You can have some fun with gardening gloves.

Muse Food – A Holiday Whale
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this holiday whale in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico a couple of years ago.
Celebrations are often modified for local customs or sights or activities. Whale watching is huge in Puerto Vallarta so they have a holiday whale. In Cochrane, Canada, they often decorate a polar bear. In Australia, they might have a holiday kangaroo.
The holidays wherever your story is set will be modified slightly also. Reflect that in your world building.
