Leave The World Behind

By Cynthia Sax on February 10, 2024

Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about the movie Leave The World Behind and will contain spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this interesting end-of-the-world SciFi movie, you might wish to skip this post.

I had heard quite a few things about Leave The World Behind before we watched it.

I had heard there was no ‘ending’.

For both myself and the Dear Wonderful Hubby, the ending was solid. It was happy for one specific character. That character had one quest throughout the movie and that quest was completed. We also got a glimpse as to what the future held for the other characters. We were happy for the one character and we were satisfied for the others.

Another thing I had heard was there was no explanation for the incidents.

We thought the explanation given was sufficient (and thought provoking). Did it explain everything? No. But strange things happen during disasters.

The final main thing I had heard was the characters weren’t likable.

Julia Roberts’ character was EXTREMELY unlikable. She was a mean selfish person who verbally attacked other people constantly.

But that presented an interesting premise – what would you do if you were stuck in a disaster situation with a terrible person, if you had to semi-rely on that terrible person to not be terrible to you?

I thought the other characters had enough good in them for me to cheer for them and care what happened to them. I liked Mahershala Ali’s character and I REALLY liked Myha’la’s character. She nailed the young 20 something female. I know and love several people who are very much like her. (grins)

Anyhoo…the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I really enjoyed Leave The World Behind. It was a great spin on a disaster/apocalyptic movie.

Strike Zone And A Cyborg’s Hearing Range

By Cynthia Sax on February 9, 2024

In Strike Zone, the cyborgs on board the Dauntless hear a strange sound. The humans on board the battle station don’t hear that sound because its frequency is outside a human’s hearing range.

Humans, on average, can hear frequencies between 64 and 23,000 Hz.

A dog, on average, can hear frequencies between 67 and 45,000 Hz.

A cat, on average, can hear frequencies between 45 and 64,000 Hz.

Cyborgs are half machine. They can hear any frequencies our machines can measure.

Does that include ALL frequencies? Perhaps not. But it is a huge range.

Throwback Thursday – Dominance And Dissent

By Cynthia Sax on February 8, 2024

Dissent is a bad a$$ cyborg. He looks tough. He’s a skilled warrior.

And he has a softness for small defenseless creatures. (smiles)

Greer isn’t a small defenseless creature but she IS fighting to free herself from some terrible beings. And she’s Dissent’s genetic match. His protectiveness is thrown into overdrive around her.

And the baby creature they adopt as their own.

Dominance And Dissent

To earn the love of his curvy human, this cyborg will have to set her free.
***
Dissent has one primary mission—to find his female and protect her.

He doesn’t know who she is, where she’s situated, or what she looks like. That doesn’t stop him from searching the universe for her. He’s a cyborg and he’s determined. He WILL track her down.

While the J Model warrior is exploring a settlement on a merchant planet, he hears a defiant scream. Dissent has finally located the one being he’s genetically compatible with. He rushes to his little human’s side, ready and willing to defend her, eager to claim his female…forever.

Greer has only one dream—to be free. She’s been a slave her entire lifespan, has been subjected to soul-crushing abuse and pride-shredding humiliation. When an opportunity to escape presents itself, she takes it. Steps away from independence, she’s apprehended.

As she looks death in the face, waiting for the final strike, a tall, handsome cyborg warrior saves her. He exudes power, makes her tremble with desire, is unlike any of the males she’s ever known…except in one heartbreaking way.

He wants to own her.

As Dissent and Greer battle for dominance, danger looms. An enemy from the past has returned. He’s heavily armed, he’s not alone, and his sole goal is to kill both of them.

Strike Zone And When We, Readers, Know More

By Cynthia Sax on February 7, 2024

In Strike Zone, a mysterious sound reaches the Dauntless. Intrepid, the Dauntless’s captain, is aware of it before everyone else is.

Strike can’t process WHY his captain always senses danger before everyone else does.

But anyone who has read Intrepid Encounter knows Intrepid has that ability. Yes. (grins) We know more than Strike and the other cyborgs on Intrepid’s crew know.

And that’s glorious. (laughs)

Muse Food – Toucans And White Space

By Cynthia Sax on February 6, 2024

The Dear Wonderful Hubby took this photo of a toucan in Costa Rica. It was taken through the lens of a telescope and the core part of the image was framed by a black circle.

Which I found VERY interesting. The black drove my gaze to the toucan. It drew attention to it.

I tend to use white space with my stories a similar way. If I want reading buddies to pay attention to a sentence or phrase, I’ll place it within its own paragraph, surrounding it with white space.

Strike Zone – Second Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on February 5, 2024

Strike Zone releases on February 27th! Woot I’m sharing scenes from the first chapter as we wait.

You can read the first scene of the first chapter here:

https://tasteofcyn.com/?p=11560

This week I’m sharing the second scene.

***

“My plan now is to erect a shield around some space debris and fire missiles at it.” Their navigator appeared content with that modification.

“I projected that was your plan.” Intrepid nodded. “Engineering will assist with that project. Choice?”

“I’ll assist him, Captain.” The kid lifted his chin.

Their leader dipped his head in acknowledgement. “Strike, organize two more mock battles.”

“Organizing two more mock battles, Captain.” Strike wouldn’t participate in either of them.

He trained. His fighting skills had to be honed to ensure he could physically protect the beings around him. But he derived no joy from mock killing others.

Others felt differently about the events.

Pick me as one of the leaders. Grid resumed his campaigning.

Strike would give him that honor. “The teams will be led by—”

Captain held up his right hand. That was a signal for silence.

A strange sound pulsed through the bridge.

Strike couldn’t process how Captain had heard it first but their leader often detected danger before others did.

“What’s that noise?” Intrepid looked at them for input.

Strike had no projection of its cause. He skimmed his hands over the control panel embedded in the console before him. There were no indications of any issues on board the battle station.

No one else spoke.

“What’s the status of our systems?” Intrepid looked at Choice.

“All systems are operating within spec, Captain.” The kid looked down at his control panel also.

“The sound isn’t originating from our communications systems, Captain.” Argot verified that fact.

“It isn’t impacting the Dauntless’s flight.” Drift, their pilot, kept the battle station on course.

Cure, their medic, raised his handheld. “The sound has triggered threat responses in us, but there are no other signs of damage to our forms.”

Strike ran noise-level scans on the entire vessel. “It’s loudest on the right side of the battle station.” That side faced the border. The border they vowed to protect. He shifted his weight from his left booted foot to his right booted foot. “Requesting authorization to modify the Dauntless’s trajectory 90 degrees to the west.”

“That path is clear, Captain.” Grid relayed information Strike already processed.

“Authorization granted.” Their leader didn’t hesitate to take his suggestion. That pleased Strike. “Drift, adjust your course.”

“Adjusting our course, Captain.” Their pilot made that modification.

Strike performed another set of noise-level scans. “The sound is now loudest at the front of the Dauntless.”

“It’s originating from outside the vessel.” Captain tapped his chin with his right index finger. “And also from outside the sector.”

That meant it was outside their responsibility.

“Is it a distress call?” Cure placed one of his hands on the medic pack set on the console before him. The male was prepared to respond to any request for assistance.

“If it’s a distress call, it’s unlike any I’ve ever heard.” Argot shook his head.

“It resembles…” Strike searched the databases for a corresponding sound.

“What does it resemble?” Intrepid gazed at him. “Give me your best projection.”

“There’s no exact match, but the variance to this is merely 2.1258 percent.” Strike played the audio recording.

Captain listened to it and then nodded. “That was my projection also.” Their leader recognized the sound.

As did every cyborg on the bridge. A solemness fell over the space.

“I can’t hear anything.” Argot’s female’s forehead furrowed.

“The frequency is above a human’s range,” the Valkyrie, her chosen mother, explained. “And it resembles the sound of an activated world-ender.” Captain’s female had lived longer than any of them and had fought battles all over the universe. She had identified the partial match. “The pulsing is coming from a weapon.”

“If it’s a weapon, it’s a different type.” Strike didn’t have enough inputs to label the source of the noise.

Choice, their engineer, nodded. “A 2.1258 variance is significant.”

“We’re being hailed by the Nimble, Captain.” Argot relayed that development.

The Nimble was the primary patrol battle station assigned to their section of border.

“Open communications.” Captain shifted in his chair.

I continue to work on the first draft of Drift Would, the second core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in July). My target for the submit-to-my-editor date is March 1st. That will give us plenty of time to hone the story. (smiles)

Friends, I LOVE this story thus far and I think you’ll love it also.

Strike Zone, the first core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series, is all set to release on the 27th. I shared the first snippet from the first chapter on my blog on Monday. I can’t wait for you to read the entire story!

Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Have some stealth fun. Wiggle your toes under the desk. Wear happy face-decorated socks. Slip a tiny sliver of chocolate into your coffee. And don’t tell anyone about this! It will be our secret!

The Creator

By Cynthia Sax on February 3, 2024

Spoiler Alert – This post will discuss the movie The Creator and might contain some mild spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this wonderful human vs AI/robot movie, you might wish to skip this post.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched The Creator, a SciFi movie featuring a war between humans and AI/robots and we absolutely LOVED it. It is from the director of Rogue One. Rogue One is our absolute favorite Star Wars movie thus far and The Creator definitely has that same feel to it.

One of the many things I loved about The Creator is…

How I could relate to the characters in it.

Specifically the robot child.

The robot children in other movies I’ve watched were…well…they didn’t truly act like children. I was aware when I watched them that they were robots.

In the Creator, the robot child, Alphie, had so many human quirks I forgot she was a robot. She ran like a kid runs. She had that lightning fast emotional recovery time children have. She looked at the world with a sense of wonder. She could be won over with a promise of ice cream. (smiles) She was ‘real’ to me.

And I think that’s key to great storytelling – the characters have to be real or relatable to viewers or readers. We need to know someone like them. We have to recognize at least some of their quirks in the people around us.

The Creator does a great job at doing this.

Note: This movie made me cry SO hard. It is definitely a three tissue watch.

Strike Zone And Action-Seeking Cyborgs

By Cynthia Sax on February 2, 2024

Cyborgs were manufactured for battle.

They are designed for action. They seek action. They NEED action.

The cyborgs on the Dauntless are some of the best warriors in the universe. Their need to take action is more accentuated than that of the average cyborg.

And, due to their recent reprimand, they have been assigned a very passive role.

That’s creating tension on the battle station. And chaos. Because idle beings of action tend to create their own excitement. And that excitement isn’t always…safe. (grins)

Strike Zone

A cyborg devoted to duty…and to her.

***

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.

She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.

The only issue is…she has never participated in a retrieval mission.

Searching for assistance, she approaches the mate’s guard. The male, with his big broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.

Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Desperately.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to discreetly investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.

She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.

Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

Strike Zone is a standalone, mistaken-identity, Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features a cyborg warrior with a finely honed sense of honor, a human support being taking on her first dangerous mission, and an evil that threatens everyone in existence.

Throwback Thursday – Doc’s Orders

By Cynthia Sax on February 1, 2024

A series about space exploration wouldn’t, unfortunately be complete without a story centering around the diseases newcomers might transfer to the often isolated local population. That has always been a terrible consequence of exploration.

Doc’s Orders is that story in the cyborg world. I wrote it before COVID and our own Earth-based pandemic. At the time, scientists believed Candida auris would likely become a pandemic (it still might become one) and that is what I roughly based the outbreak in Doc’s Orders on.

Doc’s Orders might be too…real for some readers. And that’s okay. Skip this story and read the next one in the series.

Doc’s Orders

She wants both sides of her cyborg—the medic AND the beast.

A fully functional cyborg is balanced. His machine half and his organic half work together to produce the perfect warrior.

Doc isn’t fully functional.

The G Model operates at the two extremes. When his machine is in complete control, he’s the logic-driven medic, saving lifespans. Once his organics take charge, he becomes the savage beast…and beings die.

Both sides of Doc want to be the first to claim his female.

Allinen is one of the few beings in her small settlement who wasn’t born with a fated mate. Determined to belong somewhere, she has crafted a plan to leave the planet.

That plan doesn’t involve a huge stormy-eyed male who alternates between cool seduction and out-of-control ravishment. Doc isn’t her fated mate. Allinen knows that. But his dual nature and forbidden embraces tempt her to forget forever and indulge in more immediate delights.

Neither side of Doc views their relationship as being temporary. Her conflicted cyborg is prepared to battle her family, her planet and death itself to keep her.
