Strike Zone And Being The Sole Child Of A Single Mom

By Cynthia Sax on January 31, 2024

Kesser, the human heroine of Strike Zone, the first core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in February), is the sole child of a widowed and now single mom.

She loves her mom. The two of them are very close.

Kesser’s mom relies on her for a lot. She asks Kesser’s advice on a multitude of subjects. They live together (the culture on their planet is unpartnered children live with their parents). And they spend part of each planet rotation (day) together.

I am a child of a single mom. My relationship with my Awesome Mom is very different than my Dear Wonderful Hubby’s relationship with his two parents. His parents have each other to discuss matters with. My mom discusses these same matters with me and my siblings.

Leaving home was and is also more complicated for me. I have five siblings yet I’m always concerned my Awesome Mom might be lonely and/or isolated. This concern would be greater for Kesser due to her planet’s culture.

Kesser is committed to her mom. And Strike is committed to his brethren and the crew of the Dauntless.

Their future is very much uncertain.

Strike Zone

A cyborg devoted to duty…and to her.

***

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.

She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.

The only issue is…she has never participated in a retrieval mission.

Searching for assistance, she approaches the mate’s guard. The male, with his big broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.

Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Desperately.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to discreetly investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.

She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.

Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

Strike Zone is a standalone, mistaken-identity, Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features a cyborg warrior with a finely honed sense of honor, a human support being taking on her first dangerous mission, and an evil that threatens everyone in existence.

Muse Food – Whale Sculptures And Meeting Expectations

By Cynthia Sax on January 30, 2024

One of the things travelers expect to see when they’re visiting Grand Turks are whales.

But whales, being wild living creatures, don’t adhere to anyone else’s schedule. They do their own thing and they appear when they want to appear.

Which means some travelers won’t see whales when they visit Grand Turks.

Living whales.

Leaders on Grand Turks have ensured travelers will always see A whale by installing a magnificent life-sized whale sculpture by the shore.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I thought this was a clever way to ensure Grand Turks meets visitor expectations. (grins)

Our readers have expectations when they pick up our stories also. Think of creative ways to meet those expectations!

Strike Zone – First Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on January 29, 2024

Woot! The countdown to Strike Zone’s release day has started! Woot!

I will be sharing the first chapter while we wait.

Today, I’m sharing the very first scene.

***

Chapter One

Strike was second-in-command on a battle station that was now on secondary patrol along the most-isolated section of the cyborg sector’s border.

Being second meant waiting.

He fully embraced that state. There was no urgency in his processors or organic brain to gain control of a vessel.

Becoming a captain had never been a motivating goal for him. It was merely the path he’d stepped onto when he’d followed Intrepid, his current captain, to the Dauntless.

That male had helped to orchestrate his escape from the Humanoid Alliance, their cruel manufacturers. Intrepid had earned his full loyalty.

Strike would do anything for him. And, as second-in-command, he served his captain as best as he could. He protected Intrepid, the beings under the male’s leadership, and the battle station Intrepid commanded, constantly surveying the space around them for danger. He solved problems.

And he monitored the mood of the crew.

At the moment, the mood was one of extreme restlessness. The excess energy on the bridge was palpable.

Grid, their navigator, was especially impacted by it.

We should test the Dauntless’s shields. The chaos-loving male shared that suggestion through the officer-transmission lines.

Captain was excluded from those communications.

We’ve already tested our shields. Drift, their pilot, pointed out that truth. They passed that test.

We tested them with dummy missiles. Grid countered. We should test them now with fully functional missiles.

All the officers on the bridge, including Strike, turned their heads and simply stared at the male.

You want to shoot fully functional missiles at our battle station? Drift laughed. Are your systems damaged, warrior?

My systems are fully functional. Grid’s tone was serious. We’ll aim at the Dauntless’s wings. The potential for damage will be minimized.

But there would be damage. Strike stressed that fact. And the probability another part of the battle station will be hit by the missiles isn’t zero.

Cyborgs were skilled warriors. They weren’t infallible.

You’ll kill us all. Drift was less tactful.

We only risk death if our shields fail. Grid wasn’t backing down.

That’s not comforting, Argot, their communications officer, muttered.

The male’s human female sat next to him. She was the daughter of the Valkyrie, Captain’s genetic match.

Are all navigators like this? Choice, their engineer and newest member of the team, glanced at Strike.

Grid is…unique. Strike had met less-extreme beings holding that role on other ships.

His processors must be overclocked. Cure, their medic, pointed a handheld at Grid. But I can’t detect any variances from spec.

I’m not damaged. Grid waved his arms.

Captain’s head lifted. He gazed at the male. “Is the cause of your agitation a threat to the Dauntless, to its crew, or to the rest of the sector?”

“No.” Grid frowned.

“Yes.” Every other officer said that at the same time.

Captain’s female’s lips twitched. The Valkyrie was seated by their leader. Her left hand and Captain’s right hand were hidden under the console.

Strike suspected their fingers were linked. Physical contact was soothing to cyborgs and their genetic matches.

He didn’t process that from his own experience. Strike hadn’t located the one being he was fabricated to bond with, care for, protect.

And he projected he would never find them.

His lifespan would be devoted to safeguarding others, including his captain. And battling to maintain the peace on board the Dauntless and in the cyborg sector. “Requesting authorization to plan another mock battle, Captain.”

Pick me as one of the leads. Pick me. The mock battle, as Strike projected, distracted Grid.

“Authorization granted, Second.” Captain’s gaze didn’t shift from the navigator. “What is the threat?”

Strike silently groaned.

“There’s no threat, Captain.” Cyborgs couldn’t lie. That was written into their programming. Grid projected…incorrectly…they wouldn’t face any danger as a result of his bizarre plan. “Requesting authorization to test our shields, utilizing fully functional missiles.”

“You want to erect a shield around some space debris and fire missiles at it?” Intrepid narrowed his eyes at Grid.

The male tilted his head to the side. “That’s one option.”

“If your plan is to shoot missiles at the Dauntless and place everyone on board in peril, that request is denied.” Captain frowned.

Olrun’s shoulders shook. The captain’s Valkyrie was holding in her laughter. She didn’t process, as Strike did, that shooting missiles at their battle station was Grid’s plan.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – January 28

By Cynthia Sax on January 28, 2024

This week, the countdown to Strike Zone’s release day officially starts! (grins) Yep. I’m sharing the first scene of the first chapter tomorrow.

I continue to craft the first draft of Drift Would, the second core story in the Dauntless Cyborg series (releasing in June). This story is action-packed!

Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Go on an adventure this week. That could be a trek around the block or around the planet or between the pages of a new-to-you romance novel. Eat a new-to-you food. Learn a new-to-you word in a different language (preferably a dirty word – laughs). This will help craft an even more interesting version of you and wouldn’t that be awesome?

Throwback Thursday – Choosing Chuckles

By Cynthia Sax on January 25, 2024

If you love grumpy heroes, Chuckles is, by far, the grumpiest cyborg I’ve ever written.

He has been damaged. Permanently. And that not only causes him to be in constant pain but it also makes him question his self-worth.

He doesn’t want to be treated with pity so he growls at everyone around him.

Chuckles also secretly does very nice things for other beings. Because he is, at his core, a good being.

Bettina aka Bait is, at first glance, a very bad being. She traps beings seeking to rescue her. But usually those beings aren’t at all nice and they tend to deserve what she delivers to them.

Chuckles is the exception. To everything.

Choosing Chuckles

A Cynical Cyborg Meets A Bad, Bad Female.

Chuckles hates all humans. In the past, humans betrayed him. That treachery caused permanent damage to his muscular form, resulting in a lifespan of pain.

When the primitive D Model cyborg answers a distress call sent by a pink-and-blue haired, sparkly human female, he knows it’s a trap. He still has to respond to her fake cry for help. She belongs to him, is the one being genetically fabricated for him. But he plans to be her captor, not her captive.

Bettina, aka Bait, works with a team of females, snaring sexual predators in space, seizing their ships and transporting them to primitive planets. As soon as she speaks with Chuckles, she knows he’s not like the others. He has honor, is a being worthy of respect, of caring.

But she can’t let him go. She has to trap him. His dominance thrills her. His deep voice evokes desires she’d never experienced in the past. She’ll risk it all, breaking every rule for one wild encounter with the male she calls Sir.

Gardening – Planning Plantings

By Cynthia Sax on January 24, 2024

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are planning plantings. (grins) That’s fun to say, isn’t it? And it is fun to do.

We plan to grow the mini tomatoes and the mutated heirloom tomatoes again. We harvested seeds from the best plants in 2023 and will be growing from those. That way, we’re hoping the tomatoes will eventually evolve for our (ever changing) climate and (more constant) soil.

We’ll be trying to grow sweet mini bell peppers this year. We harvested those seeds from peppers we bought in the grocery store. We’re hoping to get more of a harvest from the minis. And we’ll be growing them in pots to try to combat the slugs.

We plan to grow pole beans, peas, radishes, lettuce, spinach as we did last year.

We’ll attempt to grow watermelon again.

Zucchini (courgettes) and butternut squash will be new for us in 2024! The Dear Wonderful Hubby is especially excited about the zucchini. He really wants to grow a plant that produces too much for us to easily use. Zucchini should do that.

Strike Zone And Preferences

By Cynthia Sax on January 23, 2024

In Intrepid Encounter, Intrepid projects Strike, his second-in-command, chooses not to participate in mock battles because he prefers to spend more time at the helm of the battle station.

He projects that because HE enjoys flying. That would be HIS choice.

And he also processes that most cyborg warriors love the mock battles. They love to fight and to mock kill their brethren.

Strike doesn’t have the same preferences as most warriors. And he forgoes the mock battles for a very different reason.

Muse Food – Daisies And Contrasts

By Cynthia Sax on January 22, 2024

I love daisies. I love the contrast between the pristine white petals and the bright yellow centers. Daisies make me happy. (smiles)

I love contrasts in stories also.

I love the grumpy hero and the sunshine heroine. I love the dark moment followed by the romantic happy ever after. I love a sliver of tenderness during a brutal battle. I love the aiming-for-perfection heroine and the chaos-causing hero.

Contrasts are interesting. They had excitement to a story. I enjoy them.

The male, with his big, broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.

Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Desperately.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to stealthily investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

Their enemies are converging and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

Strike Zone is a standalone mistaken identity Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.
