Cyborgs And Babies
The next section of the cyborg series will contain a romance featuring Choice, Rage and Joan’s eldest son. He’s a C Model like his dad and an engineer like his mom and he is now part of the Intrepid’s crew.
I’m often asked if there are more cyborg babies than the ones I’ve mentioned in stories.
YES! Many of the couples are having babies.
(Some are not having babies and will never have babies. Their lives are as happy and complete as the also childless Dear Wonderful Hubby and my lives are happy and complete.)
I merely don’t have a reason to mention those births in the stories I’ve written thus far.

The Love Of Compost
I love making compost.
I love the act of creating great soil amendments from kitchen scraps and plant clippings and other stuff other people might throw away. I love returning stuff that came from the earth to the earth. That cycle makes me happy.
We use the compost usually two times a year
– in the Fall/Autumn, after we’ve taken all the tomatoes and other plants out of the garden bed and are preparing it for Winter
and
in the Spring, when we’re preparing the garden bed for transplants and seeding.
So we aren’t in a rush to make compost. We have time. And we don’t turn the compost very often. (I poke a pole in it every few days to ensure it has air flow.)
We turned it recently and WOW, we have a lot of great looking ‘soil’ in there.
I’m excited to plant tomatoes and other vegetables in that compost next year!

Muse Food – Moss and The Surface Under Our Feet
This is an extreme close-up of a patch of moss the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted.
It was spongy under our shoe-covered feet. There was yield as we walked. And it made a squishy sound.
The next day, we were walking in a drought-stricken field. The grass and other vegetation was crisp. It crunched as we walked.
Characters often do a lot of walking in stories. They walk here. They walk there.
We, writers, can convey some world building by describing the unique-to-that-world sounds our characters’ booted feet make as they walk. All it often takes is one or two additional words yet it adds so much more to the scene.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 17
I’ve completed the first round of edits for Intrepid Encounter, the fifth core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in November). My Awesome Editor likes it! Yay! I’ve sent the revised story back to her.
I also completed the first three drafts of Hacking Hazard, this year’s short story (releasing in December with no pre-orders). I’m waiting to send that to my Awesome Editor. She can only edit one of my stories at a time and Intrepid Encounter releases first.
This week, I plan to start thinking about the first story of the next cyborg subseries. I think it will feature a cyborg you’ll meet in Intrepid Encounter. That’s all I know about this February 2024 story at the moment.

The Back To School Energy Push
I haven’t been in school for years (I’ve taken plenty of courses and workshops but I haven’t enjoyed the full day experience). Yet I always get a back to school energy push in September.
I feel like playtime is over and I should be working or, in my current situation, writing hard. The cooler weather in my part of the universe helps with this.

There’s something so appealing about cyborgs and modified humanoids and aliens who provide a shield against the dangers of the universe.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Thoughts
Kralj, the all powerful, all knowing dark hero of Dark Thoughts, first appeared in Chasing Mayhem. He is the Ruler of the Refuge and he would be the first being to confess he’s a bit of a monster. He literally EATS his enemies and not in a sexy way.
Dita, the assassin heroine of Dark Thoughts, is also a bit of a monster. She kills her targets and she enjoys dealing out those deaths. She also might be the only being in the universe who isn’t afraid of Kralj.
She finds him sexy. And he doesn’t know what to do with THAT. (grins)
Can love redeem a monster?
The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. Kralj, its leader, reigns over the remote outpost with terrifying ease, ruthlessly squashing any rumors of rebellion, killing anyone who breaks his rules. Preserving The Harvest
This year, due to the abundance of insects, more specifically slugs, we mostly have the tomatoes to harvest from the garden.
And it has been an AWESOME tomato year. We have so many! Many more than we can eat while they’re fresh.
So we’re freezing them. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have a standalone freezer. We are chopping up the tomatoes, placing them in milk bags (this Canadian way of supplying milk makes the BEST freezer bags) and we’re putting them in the freezer. I don’t skin the tomatoes or blanche them. We’re fine with tomato skins in our soups and stir fries.
It is wonderfully reassuring to have a freezer filled with food. (smiles)

Muse Food – Orca Sculptures And Second Glances
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this wonderful sculpture of an orca (killer whale) near Hoonah, Alaska.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby had the clever idea of photographing it so the orca looks like she’s jumping into the sky.
If someone looked at it quickly, they might think it was a real orca.
But on a second slower glance, they’d realize it was a skillfully-wrought sculpture.
I like to craft characters in stories that way also.
At first glance, you might think, for example, Strive doesn’t pay attention to the world around him. He appears ‘lost’ in his art and in his own processing.
But once you get to know him, you realize he pays attention to EVERYTHING. He sees the details in a scene. He hears the nuances in a friend’s voice. He’s ‘lost’ but he’s lost in the moment.
