We first meet Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing in November) in Breathing Vapor, the second story in the cyborg world.
He escapes with Vapor and other cyborgs from their manufacturing facility. The Humanoid Alliance had not yet assigned them to active duty. They had never been placed on the battlefield.
These cyborgs were still forced to do and see horrific things. They killed beings in their training battles. They witnessed their brethren being decommissioned. They fought their way out of the manufacturing facility when they escaped from the Humanoid Alliance.
Grin and his brethren endured dark, harsh lifespans. I’m extremely happy they will finally experience love and joy.

The Lifespan Of A Washing Machine And Dryer
I love to track the life cycles of vehicles and machines. Where things I use have come from and where things I use will go fascinates me.
Recently, for example, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I replaced our washer and dryer. We had bought them used for very little money when we first bought the house and we expected them to last a couple years. They lasted for decades with merely minor repairs.
Then the washing machine started leaking. The parts to repair it would have cost more than a new-to-us replacement machine and we suspected other parts of the machine would soon fall apart.
We bought four-year-old new-to-us replacement machines (both the washer and the dryer) for much less than we would have paid for ONE brand new machine. The newer machines are MUCH lighter. They also use less water and less electricity to operate.
We gave our not-working washer and dryer to the neighborhood scrap metal person. The machines will be stripped for functional parts and the rest of it will be melted down. Nothing will be wasted. Nothing will go to the landfill.
I like that. Our old washer and dryer won’t truly ‘die.’ They will have new lifespans in other machines.

Muse Food – Old Trucks And Old Spaceships
I watch the traffic in our neighborhood. There are quite a few new vehicles. But there are quite a few older vehicles also.
They are usually not as old as this truck the Dear Wonderful Hubby spotted on Alcatraz. (grins)
But they ARE older.
And that reminds me that not all spaceships in my stories will be in immaculate condition. They will usually be in great condition if cyborgs are maintaining them. But on lower credit, more rustic planets, there will likely be a few ‘wrecks’ flying around.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – October 16th
I continue to work on the first draft of Raw Desires, the third core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in February). This is such an action-packed story. (grins) And, of course, there are jokes. And love. There is so much love. I think you’ll enjoy this story, my friends.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. People dress up and play make believe for the day. We give out (and eat) tiny bits of candy. There are pumpkins and jack o’lanterns everywhere. There’s a sense of community in the neighborhood. That makes me happy.

Saying I Love You And Sincerity
There was a discussion recently about whether or not people who say ‘I love you’ often are sincere about that love.
My first reaction (and this might very well be the wrong reaction) when I hear people wonder why other say ‘I love you’ so often is… they’re fortunate. They’ve never lost someone they’ve loved and felt the regret of not having told them how they felt one more time.
I HAVE experienced that regret and I’m determined never to feel it again. So I tell people I love them at the end of every phone call. And I tell them that every time we part. I want ‘I love you’ to be the last words they hear from me. They should never doubt how I feel about them.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby is also a words of love type of guy. He needs to hear ‘I love you’ to feel loved. And he needs to say it when he feels that emotion. That’s important to him.
I tell the Dear Wonderful Hubby I love him hundreds of times a day. That makes him happy and it is the absolute truth. I love him to bits. (grins)

Grin And Bare Him And Alpha Or Beta Heroes
I am super interested in hearing what you think of Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing in November).
I suspect some reading buddies will view him as a Beta Hero. Grin doesn’t view himself as a warrior. He is totally open to following his female’s orders. He processes situations from different perspectives before he reacts to them.
Some other reading buddies will view Grin as an Alpha Hero. He has to strength to do his own thing (designing structures for his kind) and he walks away from the role everyone expects him to hold (that of being a battle-loving warrior). He says ‘no’ quite often to situations that don’t appeal to him. When it comes to his female’s safety, he doesn’t relent.
Grin is a complex hero. (smiles) I love him to bits.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord Unarmed
Murad, the hero of Warlord Unarmed, is a different type of Warlord. While his brothers rely on battle strategy or fighting skills to defend their planets, Murad relies on the technology he and his Chameles design to keep his kind safe.
Murad is one of the most beta heroes I’ve written. He is secure in his intelligence and he doesn’t need to speak loudly or rattle swords to convince beings to follow him.
Which works for Gale, his gerel or mate. (grins) She values that quiet strength.

Murad, a technology-loving Chamele Warlord, has to track down and eliminate a rogue warrior before that male ends Murad’s reign. Permanently.
When a pieced-together wreck of a ship enters the sector without authorization, Murad assumes it is piloted by an ally of his enemy and decides to blow the battered vessel out of open space.
Then he hears the voice of its sole occupant and his orders and his priorities immediately shift. The captain of the ship is his gerel, the one female he’s genetically compatible with—the light to his darkness, his future, his everything.

Grin And Bare Him And Expectations
Parents often have expectations for us.
In my family, my Awesome Mom dearly wished that we’d all go to university/college. She went to university on a full scholarship (for Latin – grins) and she had a wonderful time. She had to quit when she contracted mono and lost her scholarship (she worries now for the scholarship students dealing with COVID) but she wanted that same joy for us.
All six of us did go to university. Not all of us graduated but we had the university experience. And we met my Awesome Mom’s expectations for us.
If we hadn’t gone to university/college, my Awesome Mom would have been disappointed but her love for us wouldn’t have decreased. We all knew that.
Not everyone’s parents or ‘makers’ would have been that understanding.
Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing in November), was manufactured for battle for example. The Humanoid Alliance expected him to fight and fight well.
Grin wasn’t interested in fighting. As a result, his skills were…suboptimal. The Humanoid Alliance’s response to that was harsh. He was slotted for decommissioning, would have been killed if he hadn’t escaped.
Freedom saved his lifespan but it didn’t delete expectations for him. Other beings assume he’s a skilled warrior because he’s a cyborg. Many of his cyborg brethren find his lack of interest in battle unusual.
Grin knows this. And he expects this…even from his newly-located female.
