Throwback Thursday – Breathing Vapor
A buddy recently asked me why Breathing Vapor is the second story in the cyborg series and not Crash And Burn.
The reason for that is because I wanted to explore the civilization on Tau Ceti before seeing its destruction. I wanted to learn about its inhabitants, care for them, view them as living, loving beings.
I also wanted to show that not all members of the Humanoid Alliance agree with what their leaders were doing. There are dissidents like Mira, the heroine. There are beings quietly or not-so-quietly trying to make a difference, make things better.
The Humanoid Alliance ARE evil and they have to be defeated. But some of their members are worthy of redemption, of trust, of love.
Breathing Vapor
Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.
He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.
She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Bonding Ceremonies – Chasing Mayhem
The celebration of marriages and other unions during this wonderful month of June wouldn’t be complete without the bonding ceremony found in Chasing Mayhem. The exchange of armlets and words play an important role in Imee’s culture and in her story.
Here is a snippet from Chasing Mayhem…

“I’m never releasing you.” He reached under the pile of body armor. “I’ve decided to bind you to me for all eternity.”
“No more games.” She pulled on the restraints. “I—”
He held out two silver-colored armlets, one small, one large, and she stopped talking, stunned. The gear-and-cog design was unique, intricate, beautiful.
But it was his words paired with his choice of gift that caused tears to prick her eyes and a ball of emotion to form in her throat. He wanted to bind their souls forever.
It was one of her secret wishes, a dream she held close to her heart.
“Don’t you dare joke about this, Mayhem.” She wouldn’t survive it.
“I’m serious.” And he did appear that way, his lips flat. “They’re manufactured from my mechanics, some of the most durable substances in the galaxy.”
He’d put a piece of himself in the armlets. Her vision clouded. “You fool. You shouldn’t have done that.” It must have hurt him.
“My nanocybotics replaced them.” He shrugged. “Our lifespans will be long. My mechanics were the logical choice.”
She suspected his decision had involved more than logic. “If we do this, our souls will be entwined until time ends.”
“They already are, my female.” He snapped the smaller armlet around her left biceps. “I give to you my soul for safekeeping. It is yours. In this lifespan and the next. Guard it well for I have no other.”
He had studied and learned the binding words. Imee stared at the armlet, unable to speak. His nanocybotics bubbled inside her. She wore his armlet, a symbol of his soul.
He’d always be with her. She would never be solitary.

A Snippet From Big Cat Shifters
As we wait for Big Cat Shifters, the next short(er) story collection from C.S. Sax, to release, I thought I’d share a snippet from the first story in the collection, Assistant To The Alpha Lion.

Metal clicked against metal behind her, the sound obscenely loud in the quiet room, and Starr jerked fully awake.
She looked upward, met a golden gaze.
Those intriguing eyes were set in a face that thoroughly captivated her yet was too rugged, too scarred to be called handsome. The man’s blond hair was slightly shaggy. There was a shadow of scruff on his chin.
This must be the older brother, her prospective boss.
“M…Mr. Leone.” She struggled to her feet. Her right stocking slipped down her leg. She hastily pulled it up. Her face heated.
The younger brother might have laughed about her dishevelment. She suspected this brother wouldn’t approve of it.
He was all hardness and strength. His expression was gravely serious.
The man glanced down at the crisp white paper clutched in his right hand. “Starr.” His lips twisted. “I should have known what this was by the name.” He crumpled up her resume and tossed it into the fire. “I guess we don’t need this.”
The paper, representing her chance for a better life, burned.
“I guess we don’t.” Starr lifted her chin, hiding her disappointment under a forced smile.
She had been chewed up and spat out, as the receptionist had warned her she would be. The probability of her landing the job was now officially zero.
The eldest Leone brother prowled around her. He moved silently, sensuously. His black suit fit him like a second skin, rippling over his muscles. His shoulders were broad. His hips were narrow.
Starr remained still, resisting the urge to turn with him. She felt like she was prey being stalked by a very large, very deadly predator.
The man leaned closer and sniffed the air. “You smell delicious.” His nostrils flared.
Her cheeks burned. “Friday is all you can eat bratwurst at the Bavarian Sausage House, sir.”
“Hmmm…” He purred. That deep, sexy sound coiled around her.
Her nipples tightened and her pussy grew wet.
She couldn’t remember the last time anyone had aroused her. Earning money had been her sole focus since her mom’s death.
Yet he had done that with a mere hum.
Fuck. She had to get it together. Starr straightened.
Mr. Leone’s gaze dropped to her bodice.
She knew what he was looking at. Her white peasant blouse barely contained her large breasts.
And she knew he was interested in what he saw. His unusual eyes darkened with desire.
Maybe she didn’t have to get it together.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – June 6th
As I mentioned yesterday (or it could have been some other day this week or maybe last year. I don’t know. – grins – My area of the planet is still in semi-lockdown and all the days are running together), I bungled the beginning of B Free, the fourth story in the Rebel Cyborgs series, and had to start over. That’s okay. I didn’t plan to release it until November and I now know B and his female a little bit better.
Those B Models. (shakes head) You think C Models are stubborn and uncooperative? B Models make them look easy going.
But he IS working with me now (I think) and the words are flowing once more.

B Free And Starting Over
I was deep into the first draft of B Free, the fourth story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November), and I realized it wasn’t working. I had started telling the story in the wrong place (too far into the action) and from the wrong POV (it should have started with B’s thoughts).
I started over.
Not completely over, of course. I was able to re-use a few scenes with some heavy tweaking. But that took me almost as long as writing a fresh scene.
It hurt. I won’t sugar coat it. I’m writing this post over a week later because I didn’t have the heart to write it sooner. It was too painful.
But it was needed. The story works now. The words are flowing. I feel good about it. It will be a stronger, more entertaining, tighter story because I started over.
Don’t be afraid to start over.

Under Strain
A damaged cyborg warrior is hunted by a peace-loving human female.

Strain is severely malfunctioning. The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor after a horrific decision was made by his cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, and told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes place on a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to claim her. Forever.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Hers To Command And Wedding Anniversaries
June is the month I most associate with weddings so I thought it would be fun this month to revisit some of the wedding-like scenes from my stories.
In Hers To Command, two of Carys’ crew members are celebrating the 5th anniversary of their bonding ceremony. Carys, Ace and Thrasher make a brief appearance at the party.
Here’s a snippet from that scene…

“Commander.” One of those Ungarian males depicted rushed forward, the other male following him. “We’re so glad you could come.” He reached out his hand.
Ace and Thrasher stepped closer to their female.
The male’s gaze flicked to them and his hand lowered.
“I…” Their Carys paused, “We only have a moment, but we wanted to convey our congratulations on this special planet rotation.”
She used the word we, including them in her plans. Thrasher grinned at Ace.
“The five moons have smiled on you and your mate.” She switched to Ungarian, her growls painfully stiff. “We wish you many more moons of happiness.”
Thrasher searched his databases. That was the formal felicitations for an Ungarian pair who were celebrating five solar cycles of togetherness, an important milestone in the culture.
He glanced at the beaming males. Ungarian pairs consisted of one male and one female. These were two males.
They are defective also, Ace transmitted what Thrasher was processing.
Yet our female accepts their bond. Thrasher read the genuine happiness on their female’s face. She celebrates it.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without you, Commander,” the more verbal Ungarian male gushed, hugging the other officer. “If we were on Ungaria, our bonding wouldn’t have been recognized at all.”
“But you’re not on Ungaria. You’re on my battle station and I recognize your bonding.” Their Carys’ tone bordered on arrogance. “Your crew members recognize it also. They wish to celebrate with you.”

Throwback Thursday – Dark Thoughts
When Kralj, the all-knowing, all-powerful hero of Dark Thoughts, first appeared in one of the cyborg romances (Chasing Mayhem), I knew he would, some day, be featured in his own story. This enemy-eating modified humanoid was too fascinating, too mysterious not to investigate.
His heroine, Dita, is 100.0000% human yet is fully his match. She is the one being he has encountered in his long lifespan whose mind he can’t read, can’t control.
This is a true enemy-to-lovers romance. The two of them try to kill each other. Their love is that passionate, that wild. No rules apply.

The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. Wonder Woman 1984 And Tightening Scenes
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about Wonder Woman 1984 and it will involve spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, please consider skipping this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I recently watched Wonder Woman 1984. We enjoyed it. It was light(er) and colorful and entertaining.
The script, however, did have major issues.
Some reading buddies have asked me in the past what I mean about a plot being ‘tight.’ That’s easiest illustrated by using a plot that ISN’T tight.
Wonder Woman 1984 is a great (or, rather, bad – grins) example of this.
At the beginning of the movie, for example, a jewelry store is being robbed. The thieves aren’t seeking to steal jewelry. They want the antiques being sold out of a back room.
That’s a very specific goal…especially for thieves who are portrayed as being inept and unsophisticated. They don’t seem to be the types to choose hard-to-resell antiquities over easy-to-fence diamonds and gold.
I assumed someone hired them. Yet they aren’t searching for a specific item when they rob the place and they clearly can’t take everything. Some of the items are too large to be easily or discreetly carried out of the store. They appeared to be stealing random sh*t.
If the thieves were hired by someone, we never find out who did that hiring. Or what that person was seeking to find.
We never see or hear about the thieves past that early scene. They are throwaway characters.
The two purposes of the scene seemed to be showcasing Wonder Woman’s powers and transferring the dream stone, via the FBI, to the Smithsonian where Wonder Woman works.
That’s a loosely written scene. It does the bare minimum, moves one plot point forward.
A tighter scene would have the thieves working for the villain or for an alternate villain. That they were chosen by the villain would relay things to us about this big baddie, about his connections, his personality, his goals.
We’d then see the thieves a few more times during the movie. The thieves might reveal or reflect more aspects of the villain.
Or maybe the thieves flip on the villain and align themselves with Wonder Woman. And then they reveal or reflects aspects of our heroine.
There are a gazillion other ways to make this scene do more. Maybe the happy little girl Wonder Woman saves appears in the world is going to Hell scene (instead of a random family). Or there is a running joke about shopping malls being dangerous.
That would tie this early scene to future scenes. It would mean more, would make the plot more cohesive, be ‘tighter’.
The movie would feel like one work of art instead of a series of random scenes.

Under Strain
A damaged cyborg warrior is hunted by a peace-loving human female.

Strain is severely malfunctioning. The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor after a horrific decision was made by his cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, and told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes place on a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to claim her. Forever.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Welcome To June!
This year has been creeping by for me and I’m super okay with that. I have stories to write. I prefer that time slows a bit. (grins)
I was always told that June was named after the Roman goddess, Juno, the goddess of marriage. There has been some debate over that in recent years. Some say June was named after Lucius Junius Brutus, the founder of the Roman Republic. Others say it was a nod to Latin word iuniores, which means “younger ones.”
As I’m a romance writer and reader, I like the goddess of marriage origin story. (laughs)
And it is appropriate because June is the month I most associate with weddings. The weather is usually nice in my corner of the universe. There are plenty of outdoor weddings, especially with pandemic considerations. Fresh flowers are plentiful. There are some great photo opps.
I LOVE weddings. I often cry with happiness as an attendee. They are a celebration of love and I think we should have as many celebrations of love as we possibly can.
Some of my favorite people are named June. (big hugs) I’m wishing all those buddies and everyone else a wonderful month!
