My Writing Speed And Having A Long Writing Lifespan

By Cynthia Sax on April 30, 2018

Some writers write super quickly. Some writers, like myself, write slowly. Once a writer has been writing for a few years, she knows, on average, how long a book will take.

For me, it takes 2 full months to write a 56,000 word/224 page story (using the traditional 250 words/page calculation – each bookseller lists a different page count for my stories). That’s writing full time 7 days a week, adding time for revisions and edits.

If you paid me a million dollars, I couldn’t produce the same quality of story in 1 month, i.e. half that time. That isn’t possible for me.

A reader suggested I write longer stories in the same length of time. Again, that’s not possible for me. A 112,000 word/448 page story would take 4 months, double the time. It might take longer because that’s not a length of book I’m currently comfortable writing.

Writing the 56,000 word count stories allows me to have a release every 2 months, which is pretty darn good. This is only possible because I self-publish. A big New York publisher wouldn’t agree to release my stories that frequently.

Because I have two series on the go, there is a wait of 4 months for a new book in each series. I alternate series so readers of one series don’t have to wait longer than readers of the other series. This also keeps my muse happy. I like the slight change of worlds.

I plan to release like this for decades, keeping to the same slow but steady pace. I have many, MANY stories to write. It’s exciting.

Note: Other writers write at different speeds, have different word counts for their books, different number of series on the go, different ways of publishing. This isn’t a competition. We’re creating unique works of art. We’ll have unique release schedules.

Taking Vengeance Cyborg Romance

Taking Vengeance

The only force stronger than their hate is their love.

Vengeance hates all humans. They killed every being he ever cared about. When the huge C Model cyborg is told he’s genetically compatible with the enemy, he makes it his mission to capture the female and use her to expel all humans from his home planet. That should be disappointingly easy. She’s a weak, fragile human.

Then she blows up his ship, blasting to bits his preconceived notions about the enemy.

Astrid, aka the Buoir Berserker, hates all cyborgs. They killed her entire clan, including her baby sister. The warrior female has vowed to hunt down and destroy the enemy. When a savage cyborg arrogantly puts his hard, sexy body within her reach, she does the only thing a female can do—she peppers his muscular physique with projectiles.

The more passionately they fight, the stronger their attraction becomes. Neither of them will relent on their missions, yet they can’t keep their hands off each other. Their battle will either end in love to last an eternity or in death.

Taking Vengeance is Book 12 in the Cyborg Sizzle series and is a STAND-ALONE story.
It is also an enemies-to-lovers Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, often violent universe.

Taking Vengeance And Scanning Second Buoir

By Cynthia Sax on April 25, 2018

Some reading buddies have asked about scanning on Second Buoir. Astrid, the heroine of Taking Vengeance, has to search for her family’s remains on foot because the terrain is unscannable yet Vengeance, our hero, completes a lifeform scan of the planet.

How is this possible? It sounds like a continuity error.

I DO make errors in my stories. (sheepish smile) Every book ever written has a few mistakes in it. But this isn’t one of them.

A lifeform scanner is useless to find remains. There’s no life left in the bodies. But other scanners are as ineffective.

Astrid knows her family’s remains are buried. The soil is what makes Second Buoir unscannable or, to be more exact, unscannable for Astrid’s purpose – which is to pinpoint the location of human remains hidden under the soil.

On Earth today, ground-penetrating radar ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-penetrating_radar#Limitations) is often used to locate buried bodies. BUT GPR isn’t effective with all soils. Soils with a high clay content, for example, are often unreadable (soils with a high clay content can also cause natural mummification of bodies – grins).

Although GPR’s capabilities will improve in the future, Second Buoir is a unique planet, has its own unique soil. I suspect the technology would have to be farther tweaked for Astrid’s usage and she doesn’t have those resources.

A different type of heroine might use the unique soil as a way to block lifeform scans. She would ‘hide’ in an underground bunker or cave.

Astrid isn’t the hiding type. She lives defiantly on the surface, where she can be scanned. I love that about her!

Taking Vengeance And Why The Humanoid Alliance Attacked Second Buoir

By Cynthia Sax on April 23, 2018

This could be one of Astrid’s ancestors

Astrid, the heroine of Taking Vengeance, lives on Second Buoir. Her kinfolk were some of the best human warriors in the universe. They refused to align with the Humanoid Alliance, declaring themselves neutral. The Humanoid Alliance attacked them, killing almost every being on Second Buoir.

Why would the Humanoid Alliance kill warriors who were openly neutral?

They were sending a message to every other human in the universe. If the humans didn’t join the Humanoid Alliance, they would be viewed as enemies, beings to be eliminated.

The Humanoid Alliance didn’t start out as large and powerful as they are now in the cyborg series. They had to consolidate the populations of humans on the various planets before attacking other species. They also had to quash insurrection within their ranks.

Any civilian humans who didn’t join with the Humanoid Alliance discretely ‘vanished.’ Resisting warriors, such as the humans on Astrid’s planet, were deemed hostile and openly killed. This put fear into all humans.

This also allowed other species to look the other way. The species could say there was no ‘proof’ civilian humans were disappearing. They could say the warrior humans had ‘deserved’ the repercussions.

The Humanoid Alliance grew, expanding their reach and increasing their power…until they pushed their cyborg ‘weapons’ too far.

Taking Vengeance And Waging War In The Trees

By Cynthia Sax on April 21, 2018

In Taking Vengeance, Astrid, our heroine, strings tripwires between trees. This is one of her many defenses on the planet. She’s hoping if she’s attacked, the enemy will run between the trees, set off the explosives and blow themselves up. She’d eliminate the enemy AND be warned she was in danger.

In almost every alien invasion movie, we see the hero or heroine running into the woods to hide from the invaders. The thinking is it would be more difficult for the enemy to find him/her. The enemy couldn’t spot the hero/heroine easily from their ships in the sky or see him/her through the trees on the ground.

The reality is the forest is a dangerous place to be in wartime, even if the enemy is human. The enemy knows that is where we tend to hide and they usually have countermeasures in place.

In Underfire: The Untold Story of Pfc. Tony Vaccaro ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5254612/ ), the WWII veteran and photographer tells viewers how the Germans would deliberately hit the top of trees with shells. This natural shrapnel would rain down on soldiers. The small fragments “would go right through you.” The soldiers would be shredded instantly.

That’s one very simple yet effective way to flush opponents out from forests. Aliens would likely have more sophisticated methods (and likely also have lifeform scanners).

During an alien invasion, stay away from the forest. (grins)

Interviewed on USA Today’s HEA Blog!

By Cynthia Sax on April 19, 2018

Woot!
Veronica Scott has interviewed me at USA Today’s HEA blog!

Here’s a snippet…

“Veronica: What do you think is the appeal of cyborgs for sci-fi romance readers? What do your readers say to you about why they enjoy the books so much?

Cynthia: One of the things that touches readers is the intense yearning cyborgs have for love. Cyborg heroes are usually designed for battle. That is their main purpose. My cyborgs were manufactured in a vat and matured without parents. All they’ve done is train and kill and survive. They have never known love (other than the caring they have for their brethren).

When they DO experience love, it’s a wondrous thing. They’re willing to kill and to die to capture and keep that feeling.”

Taking Vengeance and Mummification On Second Buoir

By Cynthia Sax on April 19, 2018

Note: This post is about mummification and WILL feature photos of mummies (i.e. dead people). If this type of topic upsets you, please don’t read this post.

Astrid, the heroine of Taking Vengeance, originates from and now lives on Second Buoir, a small planet. She comes from a warrior tribe and, as a result, death is a big part of her life. Her kinfolk bury their dead (after performing a ritual) and, due to the type of soil found on the planet, the bodies are naturally mummified.

Is this possible?

Most of us know about the Egyptian mummies. Those bodies were specially prepared to ensure mummification. It was often a long and elaborate process.

The floor at the bottom of the display is made of glass. The Mummies can be seen through that glass.

But there ARE many incidents on Earth of people being naturally mummified. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I recently visited Arica, Chile. In Arica, there were natural mummies found dating from as far back as 5050 BC (the earliest mummies from Egypt date from 3000 BC, 2050 years AFTER the Arica mummies).

One of the Mummies at the Arica, Chile site.

These Arica mummies belonged to the Chinchorro culture and, unlike many cultures, they cared for ALL of their dead in the same way, whether the dead person had held an important role or had been completely dependent upon others. The audio guide stated that the most care was often taken for children, including babies from miscarriages. Bodies were often wrapped in reeds and buried with their possessions.

As the culture advanced, the Chinchorro took additional steps to preserve their dead but about a third of the mummies found were naturally preserved.

As Wikipedia shares ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinchorro_mummies ), “The soil is very rich in nitrates which, when combined with other factors such as the aridity of the Atacama Desert, ensure organic preservation. Salts halt bacterial growth; the hot, dry conditions facilitate rapid desiccation, evaporating all bodily fluids of the corpses. Soft tissues, as a result, dry before they decay and a naturally preserved mummy is left.”

The ‘mummies’ in the photos have been exposed to air (some of them have been exposed for more than 100 years). That, combined with being over 7,000 years old, makes them less mummy-like and more like skeletons. And yes, the hair is real. It survived.

There are other incidences throughout our planet of natural mummification (natural mummification can often occur in clay-heavy ground). Natural mummification, while rare, IS possible.

Many of the Mummies were wrapped in reeds and were buried with their possessions.

Talking About Taking Vengeance, Pride And Prejudice And Enemies-To-Lovers Romances With Delilah Devlin

By Cynthia Sax on April 18, 2018

I’m talking about enemies-to-lovers romances at Delilah Devlin’s online home today.

Here’s a snippet…

“There are a gazillion wonderful enemies-to-lovers romances in Romanceland. They span every subgenre from Historical Romances to Romances set in the distant future.

The most famous is likely Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice, a Romance classic. Mr. Darcy and Lizzie hate each other at first sight. He insults her at a ball, saying, “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me.” She eventually zings him with “I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.” Yes, ouch.”
