SciFi Saturday News – Planetary Protection Officers, Sending Humans To Mars and Inspiring Space Photos

By Cynthia Sax on October 10, 2015

Are you looking for inspiration for your next SciFi romance story? These are the news stories that inspired me this week.

Sending Humans To Mars

Avaneesh Pandey shares

“In another step toward humanity’s journey to Mars, NASA on Thursday released a detailed outline of its plan to get to the red planet. Although the space agency did not announce a firm date for a manned mission, humans might be living and working in “Earth independent” habitats on Mars as early as the 2030s — if all goes according to plan.”

NASA’s Planetary Protection Officer

If you want a super cool career for your about-to-meet-a-hunky-alien heroine, how about making her NASA’s planetary protection officer?

Scott Sutherland shares

“The whole job description sounds a bit like Sci-Fi: One lone woman, with a mission to protect the universe… from Earth. Meet Catharine A. Conley, NASA’s planetary protection officer.

Space is a hazardous place, hostile to life, but Conley has been charged with protecting it from us, or at least what we might send out into it. That’s just what NASA’s planetary protection officer does, and it’s far more about science than science fiction.”

3D Printers And Replicators

I use machines similar to Star Trek replicators in some of my SciFi romance novels. These machines create objects from base inputs. Hmmm… doesn’t that sound a lot like a 3D printer?

Yes, it does. And people are working on applying 3D printers to space travel issues.

Toronto doctor Julielynn Wong shares

“We can’t take all the surgical supplies we want with us on a Mars mission. So the idea was, hey, why don’t I look at the medical inventory for space missions and see what’s 3D printable — just try to convert everything from hardware into something that’s virtual? Using 3D printers for space medicine is transformative.”

Some Awesome Space Photos

Here’s a post with some of the best space related photos I’ve seen in a while, including this one of two galaxies NGC 4302-4298 interacting.

What inspired you in the SciFi world this week?

Interview With Renee Rose

By Cynthia Sax on October 9, 2015

I sat down (virtually) with Renee Rose for a short interview. Renee Rose’s latest release is The Hand of Vengeance, a SciFi Romance!

Renee Rose: Hi Cynthia! I’m so excited to be here on your site because, well, I want to be you when I grow up!

Cynthia Sax: What? I’m supposed to grow up? No one told me that. Okay, if we’re doing a serious interview (grins)… What makes Blade sexy?

Renee Rose: Blade Vengeance is a dominant male on a planet where gender roles have reverted to primitive levels. He expects complete obedience from females and isn’t afraid to administer discipline when he deems it necessary.

Cynthia Sax: What excites you most about The Hand of Vengeance?

Renee Rose: This is my first sci-fi! I had the scenario in my head of the dominant protector trekking through the wilderness with a woman who doesn’t know what she’s doing (I guess it’s Romancing the Stone–lol!) but I couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work in modern day times, so I realized I needed to create a new world, where a hot hero could take a woman in hand…

Cynthia Sax: How does The Hand of Vengeance start?

Renee Rose: My story starts in an old schoolhouse which is being used as a medical camp for Jeselians injured in the recent earthquake. The heroine, surgeon Lara Simmons, is operating on a patient when the lights go out. At first she thinks it’s a normal power outage, but she soon realizes they are under siege by rebel troops who are there to kidnap her.

Cynthia Sax: What causes problems between Lara and Blade?

Renee Rose:
The conflict between the hero and heroine is that of civilized vs. savage. The heroine comes from Earth, where there’s hardly a difference between woman and men anymore, and where there’s no wilderness left for exploring. The hero’s people have been enslaved to work in diamond mines on a completely undeveloped planet. He is accustomed to violence, hard work, and living from the land.

Additional conflict comes from the hero’s heart being shuttered, as a result of losing his sister to violence when he was a slave. He has vowed vengeance for her death, and his life from that point had been single-pointedly focused on that goal. Lara must coax his heart open again if they are to have a relationship.

The final conflict is Lara’s own conflict with submission. As a modern woman from Earth, she finds Blade’s discipline demeaning and sexist, yet her body responds to it. As she comes to crave his mastery, she must admit her own leanings as a submissive.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you, Renee Rose, for joining us today!

The Hand of Vengeance

On a humanitarian mission to the war-torn planet Jesel, Dr. Lara Simmons is used to dealing with lack of supplies, power outages and the constant earthquakes that afflict the planet. But when she’s captured by the rebels who need her to perform a life-saving surgery, she finds herself in a situation her medical training didn’t prepare her for.

When the airship is blown out of the sky, she ends up in the Jeselian wilderness with no one to rely on but Blade Vengeance, an enormous tattooed rebel warrior. Dominant and unyielding, he doesn’t hesitate to take her in hand when she disobeys the rules he lays out for her. Yet she soon learns he also knows how to deliver pleasure–with a passion she’s never before experienced.

Blade finds the doctor from Earth sexy as hell, especially when she’s giving him attitude, but once he delivers her to headquarters, he tries to pull back from her allure. Known for single-handedly starting the revolution and freeing many of his people, his life is one of hardship, slavery and war. Going soft on a woman isn’t part of his plan, especially with the final strike of the revolution so close. But when he sends Lara back to Earth to keep her safe during the upcoming battle, he inadvertently delivers her into enemy hands. Can he find and save her from the revolution he caused?

Releasing Rage – The Homeland

By Cynthia Sax on October 9, 2015

Rage and his cyborg brethren have two primary goals—to escape their human masters and to reach the Homeland.

They don’t know much about this Homeland. They’ve never seen it. But they hear it is a planet controlled and ruled by cyborgs, a planet outside of Humanoid Alliance reach. Their enemies, the humans, aren’t allowed on the surface. It is a place where all cyborgs are free.

While enslaved, the cyborgs fantasize about this Homeland. It becomes almost an utopia for them, a perfect place… for cyborgs. Most cyborgs love fighting and breeding. Their vision of a perfect place isn’t yours or mine.

For Gap, a young female-crazy cyborg, his utopia has quite a few unattached females, all of these females seeking a strong warrior to help protect them. On this planet, he can show off his fighting prowess, earning a female of his own.

Rage knows there’s unlikely to be unattached females in Homeland. Female cyborgs were manufactured for only a very short time. There aren’t many of them remaining. He realizes he likely won’t have an opportunity to breed in the Homeland.

He views the Homeland as a place where he continues to fight, he’s a warrior through and through, but he decides the battles he wages. After a long lifespan of being at other beings’ mercy, he’ll finally be free, finally have total control over what he does, who touches him, whom he fights.

One of the fun things in this series is uncovering how other cyborgs envision the Homeland, what their visions of utopia are. It is a view of their secret hopes and dreams.

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Talking About The Future With Sam Cheever

By Cynthia Sax on October 8, 2015

What do you think the future will look like?

1,000 years from now, how will humans have evolved? Will they have giant thumbs due to excessive scrolling? (grins) Will there be (gasp) Nutella in this future?

I’m at the always awesome Sam Cheever ‘s online home, talking about visions of the future.

Here’s a snippet…
Because while technology might advance and our physical appearances might change, I believe, in our hearts, we’ll remain the same. Whether we’re on Earth or on a new planet, we’ll laugh, cry, be courageous or fearful, and, most of all, we’ll want love.

The Good Assistant – Third Scene

By Cynthia Sax on October 6, 2015

The Good Assistant, my sexy new contemporary erotic romance, will be releasing on October 21st.

Read the first scene from the first chapter here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2015/09/22/the-good-assistant-first-scene/

Here’s the third scene

***

With my slight form positioned in front of my executive’s much larger physique, I feel tiny and feminine and needy, so very needy. My fingers tremble as I fasten his black enamel buttons, quickly covering his magnificent chest, his chiseled abs, his heart-wrenching scars, removing the temptation to touch him. My normally keen-eyed boss thankfully doesn’t notice my reaction to his near-nudity.

“I know Grant told you that,” John rumbles, his voice deep. “What I don’t know is why you didn’t address my concerns immediately.” He spreads his arms.

I reach around his trim waist. His body is seductively warm. I tuck his shirttails into his pants, smoothing the material over his clenched ass cheeks. Dressing John is a test of my professionalism, a test I know I will some day fail.

“I’m a busy man. I don’t have time for bullshit.”

I wince, having warned Mr. Bass not to waste my boss’ valuable time. The young CEO clearly didn’t listen to me. I slide my hands around John’s hips, over his groin, trying not to touch him, unsuccessful in my quest. My boss is too big, all over.

His cock hardens. In the past, I told myself this was a natural reaction, a man’s response to any woman’s touch. Now, after the discussion with Stacie, I’m not certain. Is he reacting specifically to me, to my hands on his body?

“That’s what I need to know,” John continues his phone conversation.

I fasten the button of his pants. The impressively large ridge in his white briefs prevents me from doing more. I nibble on my bottom lip and glance upward at his face, undecided as to what to do next. John doesn’t look at me, showing no indication that he knows I’m standing before him.

Stacie must be wrong. He doesn’t want me. He doesn’t even realize I’m here. I glide my fingertips over his briefs, flatten my palm along his cloth-covered shaft, and nudge him to the side. A shudder rolls down John’s torso, shaking his shoulders.

He knows I’m here now. I smugly tug the metal teeth of his zipper closer together and slowly pull the tab upward, stretching the black fabric of his pants over his hardness. His knuckles whiten around the frame of his phone.

I reach into the right front pocket of his pants, pressing my fingers into his hip as I remove the cufflinks I’ve stored there, the devil in me teasing him more, seeking to ensure he’s aware of me. John’s gaze flicks downward, his eyes excitingly dark, tempestuous, holding a warning I won’t, can’t heed.

I grasp his left wrist, fold the cotton neatly and insert the cufflink, my head bent over my task. John’s knuckles are scarred, silver slashes marring his tanned skin, a testament to his rough childhood and his warrior soul. He acts the sophisticated man now but he has fought for every thing he’s earned, building his business from nothing.

John transfers his phone from his right hand to his left and I fasten his right cuff, resisting the urge to kiss his scars, to lave the raised skin with the flat of my tongue, to care for him the way I yearn to care for him.

“Breakeven should never be your goal.” John bends over, lowering his face to my eyelevel. I retrieve his bowtie and loop the strip of black fabric around his scarred neck. “Grant must have told you that also.” My normally direct boss avoids my gaze as he straightens.

Could Stacie be right? I fasten the black cummerbund around his waist. Could John be interested in me?

“She’ll set it up.”

I hold out his jacket and he shrugs into it. My heart squeezes. Clad in his normal suits, John’s appeal damages my control. In a tuxedo, he’s downright lethal. I brush my hands over his shoulders and place a folded cloth handkerchief in his pocket, completing his sophisticated ensemble.

“We’ll continue this conversation tomorrow.” John ends the call, lowering his phone.

My boss, John Powers, represents everything I want in a man. He’s the CEO and founder of a powerful company, that position having made him a billionaire, striking in an I-survived-a-bar-brawl sort of way, and too clever for my sanity.

I’m his assistant and desperately in love with him. I’d willingly serve him both in the boardroom and in the bedroom.

There’s one problem.

He doesn’t mix business with pleasure.

Interview With Shona Husk And Cover Reveal

By Cynthia Sax on October 5, 2015

I sat down (virtually) with Shona Husk for a short interview. Shona Husk is revealing her cover for Desire To Fall!

Cynthia Sax: Where does Desire To Fall take place?

Shona Husk: Desire to Fall takes place on an alien world where the women have wings and the men don’t. I got to create a society that is nothing like ours and yet still similar in that people want to connect with other people. Love is universal. For me the question was how would these people live now…how did they evolve? What does their city look like, what technology do they have that we don’t and vice versa. Because no society is perfect, what are their crimes? The book has an urban feel to it and there’s a lot of political tension because of the city-state is demolishing an area known for crime and redeveloping it. As you can imagine there are factions that don’t like that.

Cynthia Sax: What is one aspect that makes these couples right for each other?

Shona Husk: The couples in this story need to complement each other and they need to be able to work together and independently. In any romance it’s about how the relationship works for them. Is everybody getting what they need and want (which aren’t always the same thing). With four people involved there was a lot of hearts on the line!

Cynthia Sax: What creates problems between these couples?

Shona Husk: Society is split because the men can’t fly, so it’s a world where homosexual relationships are normal and not everyone risks breeding. To even get pregnant the women need male blood, so getting together is dangerous. This way I was able to also make ménages the usual bond for breeding. If dating one person is hard, dating a couple is even harder. The guys are already married, the women are dating and they have their own issues and it all gets very tangled in the middle.

Cynthia Sax: Is Desire To Fall part of a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Shona Husk:
Yes! I have book 2 written, tentatively called Desire to Fly, and I have plotted book 3, Desire to Burn. The redevelopment of the area is the link between each story, but while Desire to Fall takes place in the nice part of the city Desire to Fly happens in the world of crime where male blood and clipped women are trafficked. These stories are dark and sexy.

Interview With Cara Bristol

By Cynthia Sax on October 5, 2015

I sat down (virtually) with Cara Bristol for a short interview. Cara Bristol’s Terran is one of my all time fave SciFi erotic romances. Her latest release is Stranded with the Cyborg, a Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance, with YES, a cyborg hero! Woot!

Cynthia Sax: What makes Brock, your hero, so very lickable?

Cara Bristol: Brock is a cyborg who works for a covert operations force. He’s like James Bond, but doesn’t need gadgets—his special abilities are hardwired into his brain and physique. Cyborgs are the ultimate dominant, macho alpha heroes. They kick some serious ass. They’re rough, tough, and strong. But very smart too. In a lot of sci-fi romances, the hero is an alien, which can be difficult for some readers to fall in love with (what’s not to love about horned blued-skinned aliens with two…ahem). Cyborgs are human, but with some mechanical and computerized parts. They are uber alphas, but when they fall for the heroine, they fall hard.

Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Stranded with the Cyborg?

Cara Bristol: When Brock and Penelope are walking through the Intergalactic Shuttle Port, she’s mugged—her bag is stolen by an Arcanian. Brock catches the thief. This little scene takes place:

Pia ran up and grabbed his arm. “Stop, you’re going to kill him.”
Brock’s nanocytes transmitted to his brain exactly how much pressure he was applying. “No, but I’ll make him hurt real bad.”

I love it. He is so matter-of-fact! But leaping to her defense shows that even though he doesn’t want to protect her, he will. His sense of duty is that strong. He doesn’t like Penelope at this point in the story, but he’ll go to mat for her.

Cynthia Sax: How does Stranded with the Cyborg start?

Cara Bristol: Hero Brock, a cyberoperative, was about to take a much-needed vacation at a sex resort, when he’s called back to work. He’s informed his new mission is to protect the Terran ambassador while she attends an interplanetary summit meeting. The catch? The ambassador is his old nemesis who lobbed false allegations against him and derailed his former career. He is not at all happy to be assigned to her. The scene sets up the tension between the two of them.

Cynthia Sax: Is Stranded with the Cyborg part of a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Cara Bristol:
Stranded with the Cyborg is book one of the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series. I haven’t decided how many I’ll write (three, four, five?). Each book will focus on a different cyborg hero who works for the covert Cyber Operations force. Book two, which I’ve tentatively titled Mated with the Cyborg, will be published January 5, 2016. The individual novellas will be written to be read as stand-alones, but they will be linked by reappearing secondary characters, the Cy-Ops organization, and locations. For instance, the Darius 4 pleasure resort, which is mentioned in Stranded with the Cyborg, becomes one of the main settings in Mated with the Cyborg.

Cynthia Sax: Thank you, Cara Bristol, for joining us today!

Cara Bristol’s Website: http://www.carabristol.com

*****************************************************************************

Penelope Aaron, the former Terran president’s daughter, regrets how she got Agent Brock Mann booted from the security force. But now that she’s an interplanetary ambassador about to embark on her first diplomatic mission, she still doesn’t want him tagging along. Especially since he seems to be stronger, faster, more muscled, and sexier than she remembers. And pretending to be her husband? This mission couldn’t get more impossible!

Ten years ago Penelope Isabella Aaron had been a pain in Brock Mann’s you-know-what. Much has changed in a decade: “PIA” as he code-named her, has grown up and is about to attend her first Alliance of Planets summit conference, and Brock has been transformed into a cyborg after a near-fatal attack. Now a secret agent with Cyber Operations, a covert paramilitary organization, Brock gets called in, not when the going gets tough, but when the going gets impossible. So when he’s unexpectedly assigned to escort Penelope to the summit meeting, he balks at babysitting a prissy ambassador. But after a terrorist bombing, a crash landing on a hostile planet, and a growing attraction to his protectee, Operation: PIA may become his most impossible assignment yet.

SciFi Saturday News – Water On Mars, Realism In SciFi Movies And Star Wars Rumors Confirmed

By Cynthia Sax on October 3, 2015

I’m always looking for ideas for my next SciFi romance. Here are some of the inspiring real world stories I’ve seen this week.

Water On Mars

The big news was, of course, the photos of water on Mars.

Michael Daly shares

“Dark, narrow, 100 metre-long streaks on Mars, believed to have been formed by flowing water, are seen in an image produced by NASA.”

The images in this article are sure to inspire you.

Ridley Scott And Realism In SciFi Movies

I love this interview with Ridley Scott

“The fantasy of space, which is now also a reality, is a marvelous platform and a form of theatre. Honestly, almost anything goes. But, if anything goes whether you do a play, a book or a film, you’ve got to actually make your own rule book and stick within the confines of the rules you make. So, if I’m doing space fantasy like Alien or Prometheus, I’ve got to draw up the sidelines of the rule book and stick within them. It’s still a fantasy because it’s never going to happen. (The Martian) is a lot easier because, actually, you can lean very heavily on the science in the book. This was a much more realistic movie.”

Possible NASA Projects For Launch In 2020

Want to tie your SciFi Romance into existing NASA projects? They’ve announced possible projects for launch in 2020.

Rich McCormick shares

“Among those selected for this stage of funding are the Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam), which promises to discover “ten times more near-Earth objects” than have been discovered so far, and “Lucy,” which aims to scout Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids to learn more about the birth of our solar system.”

Admiral Ackbar Returning In Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The rumors that Admiral Ackbar, the fishlike character from the original Star Wars, is returning to The Force Awakens are confirmed. Tim Rose, the actor, is also raving about the movie.

“…if you were a fan of the original three, you’re going to absolutely love this one to bits.”

Star Trek Beyond Filming

Star Trek Beyond has started filming in Dubai. Why Dubai?

Chris Pine shares

“I am always good for discovering new places and this is such a stunning city.” “I woke up this morning, opened up the blinds and looked out. It looks like whatever tomorrow will be. It’s future-land!”

Which SciFi stories are inspiring you?

Rage, the Humanoid Alliance’s most primitive cyborg, has two goals—kill all of the humans on his battle station and escape to the Homeland. The warrior has seen the darkness in others and in himself. He believes that’s all he’s been programmed to experience.
Until he meets Joan.

Joan, the battle station’s first female engineer, has one goal—survive long enough to help the big sexy cyborg plotting to kill her. Rage might not trust her but he wants her. She sees the passion in his eyes, the caring in his battle-worn hands, the gruff emotion in his voice.

When Joan survives the unthinkable, Rage’s priorities are tested. Is there enough room in this cyborg’s heart for both love and revenge?
