My Awesome Mom gave me this wonderful day lily when the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I first moved into our home.
Every time I look at it, I think of her. (smiles)
This year, it has been blooming like wild. It has dozens of blooms.
But each bloom lasts for only a day due to the heat. Its beauty is fleeting and that makes it even more special.

The Bell Peppers Have Been Sacrificed
Most of the bell peppers have been nibbled to nothing by slugs and insects and other wildlife.
That is sad on one hand. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I grew the bell peppers from seed, starting them in the basement grow station. The Awesome Mom-In-Law took care of them while we went on a 3 week vacation. They were pretty and had huge shiny green leaves and they looked strong.
And now, they’re dead.
But on the other hand, this means there were slugs and insects and other wildlife to eat them. (smiles) Part of our goal is to create a backyard that supports critters, that critters thrive in.
And we did that! Slugs are a valuable part of the ecosystem. They munch on dead plants and fallen branches and they improve the soil. They’re doing well in our backyard.
We’ll buy a box of bell peppers from a local farmer. (shrugs) That is an easy solution.

I LOVE growing green beans.
I don’t like eating them. (Fortunately, the Dear Wonderful Hubby loves eating them.) But I love growing them.
Why?
Because they grow quickly. They wrap themselves around things. Their leaves are big and wonderfully green. They flower early and often.
They’re an exciting plant to grow. (grins) I highly recommend them.

Does Gardening Save Money?
People often assume we’re growing vegetables to save money.
(squishy face) It DOESN’T save us money. Not in the short run.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby is a master grocery shopper and he finds quite a few vegetable bargains. He also buys the huge boxes of tomatoes and bell peppers local farmers supply to grocery stores during the summer and fall. I process and freeze those vegetables. I do the same with the massive bags of onions he buys. We’re cool about eating canned and frozen produce, which helps lower our grocery bill also.
Today, we can source vegetations fairly inexpensively.
And there are vegetables this summer TO source. We aren’t seeing many shortages thus far. (Knock on wood that continues.)
Growing vegetables MIGHT save us money years from now if the prices increase. We’re honing our skills as gardeners. Those skills might be needed in the future.
And gardening gives me happiness. I like watching things grow!

Gardening And Our Isla Nublar
Growing anything is high risk. An unexpected frost or hail storm can decimate fragile plants like tomatoes.
Every year, I grow more seedlings than we can fit in our vegetable garden. We send the excess to Awesome Mom-in-law and Awesome Father-in-law’s house (and also give them to others). They plant these tomato seedlings in their garden.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby jokes that is our Isla Nublar, our Site B or alternative location. (In Jurassic Park, the Site B island is actually Isla Sorna.) If something goes wrong, if the ‘dinosaurs’ can’t be contained at our house, we can take clippings or thin the tomato plants at his parents’ house.

Gardening With Squirrels
Our backyard truly belongs to the Mafia Squirrels. They run the show. They decide what lives or doesn’t live.
But we’ve figured out a few tricks to increase the odds our vegetables and other plants will survive.
If I’m planting seeds in a planter/container, I leave a gap between the soil and the top of a planter/container. Once the seeds are planted, I cover the top with wire netting/fencing, pinning it in place with sticks (so the squirrels can’t knock it off). The squirrels are unable to easily access the soil so they leave it alone.
I stick sticks or branches in the soil around bigger plants (like the tomatoes), creating a little fence. Again, this blocks access to the actual plant. And our squirrels DO dig up tomato plants.
(Tomato cages don’t stop the squirrels. The gaps are too large.)
I walk around the garden a couple times a day and replant dug up plants. Usually if I replant them right away, they will survive.
Hot pepper flakes or sauce WILL keep the squirrels away but only for a short time.

Caring For Our Soil
Everything comes from something else. The nutrients in our food, for example, come from the nutrients in our soil. This is why soil integrity is so fraggin’ important.
In the past, I did a sh*t job at caring for the soil around our home. I would put (excessive) weeds and prune the rose bushes and send all that to the city for composting. Which was a great thing to do. Except I never gathered that compost from the city. I didn’t sprinkle it on the ground, returning those nutrients to the soil.
Which meant my soil was depleted of all that good stuff.
I’m trying to restore the balance now. I am creating our own compost and I’m returning those nutrients back to the soil.
We live and we learn and we do better. (smiles)

Watching The Garden Grow
All of the seedlings have been planted in the backyard vegetable bed. Yay! They are still very small but it does look like a legitimate garden now. (smiles)
I joke about sitting back and watching the garden grow.
There are still tasks to complete in the garden. I’m composting. I’m weeding. I’m replanting whatever the mafia squirrels dig up. I’m training the peas along the string trestle. And interesting tasks like that.

Bringing Seedlings Outside
I’m looking at the weather forecasts for the next two weeks and I see NO frost. Yay!
The plants are going outside.
The marigolds will be the first seedlings transplanted. I use them as a border around the vegetable garden. I’m told they ward off the bad bugs like slugs and snails (we have SO many snails – I love them but not in the garden).
I will also be sowing zinnia seeds. I sowed some last month but then we got cold temperatures and none of them sprouted. I’ll try again this week. (I harvested the zinnia seeds from last year’s blooms and have a gazillion of them. So losing a few wasn’t THAT painful.)
The tomatoes and the bell peppers will be likely go out en masse next week.
