“My very first published story featured a dragon-shifter hero. I love them THAT much. Dragons are big and bad and primitive, at the top of the food chain. They have hoarding tendencies, which means they’re very protective of the things and beings they consider to be theirs. I find that really sexy. Dragon-shifter stories also have built-in tension, especially in a futuristic sci-fi worlds, as dragon shifters are often in conflict with more evolved, modern beings.”

“Veronica: What do you think is the appeal of cyborgs for sci-fi romance readers? What do your readers say to you about why they enjoy the books so much?
Cynthia: One of the things that touches readers is the intense yearning cyborgs have for love. Cyborg heroes are usually designed for battle. That is their main purpose. My cyborgs were manufactured in a vat and matured without parents. All they’ve done is train and kill and survive. They have never known love (other than the caring they have for their brethren).
When they DO experience love, it’s a wondrous thing. They’re willing to kill and to die to capture and keep that feeling.”

Cynthia: This is one of my favorite quotes from Dark Thoughts:
“You haven’t encountered any being like me.” Kralj was certain of that fact. “I’m the beast hunting you in your nightmares, the fear you feel in the dark, the prickling over the back of your neck when you think you’re alone.” He gazed down at her, fighting the urge to grab her, to sink his fangs into her pale neck. “I’m not a male you play with, little one.”
Kralj says this to Dita, the heroine, and it tells us so much about him. He believes he’s a monster, and yes, some readers might consider him to be one. But would a true monster warn his prey?
His first line — “You haven’t encountered any being like me.” — hints at his loneliness.
His last line — “I’m not a male you play with, little one.” — is a challenge he subconsciously knows, deep down in his battered soul, Dita can’t resist.
And his term of endearment for her is telling. She’s a skilled assassin, a monster in her own right, yet he calls her “little one,” the pet name communicating that he’s protective of her.

Can love redeem a monster?
The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. In Canada, there are two very large family-controlled television service companies – Rogers Communications controlled by the Rogers family (valued at 7.4 billion dollars) and Shaw Communications controlled by the Shaw family (valued at 2 billion dollars). I know friends who work closely with the family members and executives at each company.
Eric Hixon & his wife, Melinda Rogers, Oscar de la Renta, Loretta Rogers, Suzanne & her husband, Edward Rogers
Loretta is the mother of Melinda and Edward.
Edward is the Chair of the family trust. Melinda is Co-Chair.
These two families have fiercely fought over turf and customers for generations. There’s respect for the other family but, in the past, there have also been some bitter feuds. One family would walk into an event. The other family would leave.

None of these external feuds, however, rival the struggle for control within the companies.
