Testing Truth – Final Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on September 7, 2020

Testing Truth, the next cyborg romance, releases next week. Woot!

You can read the first scene from the first chapter of Testing Truth here:
http://tasteofcyn.com/?p=7350

This week I’m sharing the final scene of that first chapter.

***

“I would do anything to be part of this mission.” Dissent’s female frowned.

Dissent looked at Truth. The warrior didn’t want to quash his female’s ambitions.

And they had to be quashed, unfortunately.

“You can’t explore Nereid Negative One with us.” Truth extracted a straightening tool from a pack placed near the fighter ship. “But you can be part of the mission.” He held the tool out to Dissent’s female. “This is for you, Great Stunner of Beings.”

She clasped it. “Do you want me to hit you with this?”

“That’s tempting, but no, don’t hit me with it.” He grinned and handed Future a similar-shaped tool. “If we are to land on the planet without arousing suspicion, we should modify the fighter ship to look like it is in need of repairs.”

“You want us to rough up the fighter ship.”  Dissent’s female gazed at the vessel. “That feels wrong. It’s in perfect condition.”

“Cyborgs optimize functionality. They don’t reduce it.” Future was as hesitant to damage the fighter ship as Dissent’s female was.

“Being blown up reduces my functionality.” Truth grabbed a tool for himself.

He wasn’t hesitant…about anything.

The fighter ship had to be damaged. He wouldn’t pass up this rare opportunity to do so.

“Ayeeee.” He mimicked Victorious the Vanquisher’s battle cry and ran toward the vessel. Using a fraction of his strength, he whacked a side panel.

Metal rang against metal. A dent appeared in the previously smooth surface. Some of its shine dimmed.

He looked behind him, seeking his audience’s reaction.

Dissent’s female and Future gaped at him.

Dissent’s expression was blank.

A second demonstration was required. Truth clobbered a different part of the fighter ship and then another and another, transferring some of his frustration at planet rotations of inactivity onto the panels.

Dissent’s female was wrong. It didn’t feel wrong. It felt great.

She was the first being to join him. The little human tapped at a side panel tentatively and then glanced at him.

“If you don’t have the strength to damage the fighter ship, that’s regrettable, but I understand.” He teased her. “You’re a human.”

“Fuck that.” She beat the fighter ship with the straightening tool. “And fuck anyone who thinks I’m inferior.” The metal rang with the ferocity of her strikes. “Fuck those who question my strength.” Sweat beaded on her forehead. “Fuck beings who tell me what to do.”

“Yes. Fuck them.” Future didn’t moderate the power of his first blow. It would take a team of cyborgs to smooth out the dent he made. “Fuck those who don’t give me a chance.” The tool he wielded swung dangerously close to Truth’s head. “Fuck being stuck on this ship.”

Truth backed away from the fighter ship, watching Future and Dissent’s female as they beat the nuts and bolts out of the vessel. His frustration had been at minimal levels compared to theirs.

“I had a systematic plan for damaging the fighter ship, D Model.” Dissent crossed his arms in front of his chest. “This was not it.”

“This is a better plan, J Model.” Truth grinned at him. “Look at how happy they are.”

“Happy isn’t the word I’d use to describe them.” His friend’s tone was dry.

His female was pounding the shine off a side panel, cursing at it as though it were responsible for all the emotional damage in the universe.

One of Future’s strikes went wild, connecting with the landing gear. A piece of it fell off.

“We need that part if we hope to land the fighter ship.” Dissent glanced at Truth.

“We’ll repair it before we leave.” He was 89.5698 percent certain that was possible. “They’re a human and a cyborg offspring. How much damage can they do?”

The side panel Dissent’s female had been pummeling dropped to the floor.

Her warrior grunted.

Truth laughed, greatly entertained. “This is so much fun.”

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 6th

By Cynthia Sax on September 6, 2020

This is a long weekend in my section of the universe. I plan to read and bake brownies and goof around with the Dear Wonderful Hubby today (Sunday) and tomorrow (Monday).

I’ll be thinking about the stories, however. That is one of the upsides (or the downsides, depending on how you look at it) of being a writer. There are no true days ‘off.’ Our stories rattle around our brains, even when we’re not writing.

The story in my brain right now is Containing Malice, the first story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February). Malice is a C Model cyborg who was left behind during the mass rebellion. He’s angry, very, very angry, and much of that rage is directed at his female, the scientist experimenting on him. He doesn’t know she is as much a prisoner as he is…and she has a plan to set him free.

We WILL meet Power’s female in Containing Malice. (grins) I can’t wait for that!

Anyhoo… I start Containing Malice on Tuesday. I suspect there will be a few false starts with this story. There usually are. It takes me several tries to figure out when to start stories. But I am WAY ahead of schedule (due to the Great Pause) and I have plenty of time to get it right.

Testing Truth And Family

By Cynthia Sax on September 5, 2020

Many of the planets in the cyborg series have been hard hit by war. (Blast the Humanoid Alliance.) And many of the heroines have lost family members and other loved ones.

That’s not the case with Princess Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth. She has biological parents – her mother and father, the Queen and King – and she has TWO brothers—the Crown Prince and the younger Prince. She also has a found family. Her Royal Dresser, her Private Secretary and her Royal Guard have cared for her since she was a baby. She views them as her parents also.

When her biological mother, the Queen, assigns Nancy the mission of rescuing her youngest brother, the Prince, it is her found family who accompanies her. Nancy might feel lonely at times but she is never truly alone.

Which, as you can likely guess, suits Truth just fine. (laughs) Our chaos-seeking cyborg is an extreme extrovert and he thrives when he is around other beings. He views Nancy’s huge family as one of the many appealing things about her.

That doesn’t mean they don’t present challenges to his relationship with Nancy, however.

Cyborgs And The Fallen

By Cynthia Sax on September 4, 2020

Note: This post has nothing to do with Testing Truth, my upcoming cyborg romance release. It DOES have everything to do with current events.

Often, reading buddies will send me messages after ‘good’ warriors in my stories die. They are understandably upset and they sometimes ask me why the death was necessary. They would prefer that no ‘good’ warriors die in my stories.

I would prefer that too—in my stories and in real life. But the nature of battle, of being a warrior, is to face death every day. Sometimes, warriors conquer death that day. Sometimes, unfortunately, death wins. That death could be their own or, more likely, it could be the death of a brethren, a friend, or someone they knew well.

I’ve completed years of research for my stories (I started these studies well before I published my first cyborg romance), had the honor of meeting and speaking with thousands of Earth-based warriors. Every warrior I’ve met has grieved the loss of a fellow warrior.

I feel to not show that in my stories is to dishonor the sacrifices made, the sacrifices being made. It isn’t capturing the true essence of being a warrior and the trauma they endure.

They know when they step onto a battlefield, they or someone they know might die. They have to deal with that and with grief every dang day. It is part of them.

Which is why I’m so fraggin’ sad at the moment. I’m sad that not everyone realizes the sacrifices warriors make. I’m sad that they don’t understand the bravery and strength required from these women and men. I’m sad that they don’t honor and respect the fallen.

To warp a saying from The Mandalorian, that isn’t the cyborg way.

And that isn’t my way. Know that I respect these sacrifices. I value them. They and the fallen will never be forgotten.

Testing Truth – A Perfect Release Date

By Cynthia Sax on September 1, 2020

One of the many things I love about Testing Truth is how it is being released at, what I believe to be, the perfect time to read it.

Truth is a sh*t disturbing, fun seeking cyborg. His story could never be super dark because he’s not a super dark hero. He manages stressful situations with jokes and antics.

Dark things happen in Testing Truth. This IS a Cynthia Sax Cyborg Romance. The death count is…healthy. (sheepish grin) But these situations seem much lighter due to Truth’s reactions to them.

And I think many of us could benefit from a lighter-toned story right now. 2020 has been a tad bit stressful. (laughs semi-hysterically) We need our happy ever afters. We need some of Truth’s chaos, could benefit from his constant quest for adventure and excitement, that escape from the sad.

Did I plan for this?

Nope. I had set the release date for Truth’s story before I shared Choosing Chuckles in March 2019. My skills at foretelling the future are weak. (laughs) I don’t think ANY of us knew what 2020 had in store for us.

Yet Testing Truth, the lightest story in the series, is releasing this month, when some of us need a story like this the most. That feels…destined, magical, meant to be.

That makes me so very happy.

Testing Truth – Third Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on August 31, 2020

We’re counting down the days until Testing Truth, the next standalone story in the cyborg series, releases on September 15th. While we wait, I’m sharing the first chapter.

You can read the first scene from the first chapter here:
http://tasteofcyn.com/?p=7350

This week I’m sharing the third scene of that first chapter.

***

“Freed.” North bellowed, shifting the attention on the bridge back to him. The D Model’s restraints retracted. He ran into the next chamber, relaying the footage as he moved.

North’s female lay on a sleeping support. A covering cloth was draped over her form. Her normally spiked black hair had collapsed. Her red eyes glowed.

She cradled a tiny D Model in her arms. The little cyborg thrashed his limbs and wailed at the top of his vocal range, his tiny gray face dark with outrage.

“He’s powerful.” Captain murmured that observation as though speaking to himself.

“My female.” North rushed to his female’s side, scattered kisses all over her pale face. “You aren’t damaged?”

“I’m feeling no pain, my male.” Her voice was soft, which was unusual for North’s warrior female. Doc must have given her excess pain inhibitors. “We have an extremely active and healthy gray-skinned, black-haired, blue-eyed baby boy.” She held up the offspring. “He looks just like his father, but he’s strong like his mother.”

Truth grinned. The female often claimed she was the strongest being on the ship.

That wasn’t the truth, of course. Many of the other beings, himself included, were cyborgs.

But that she processed she was superior in that way entertained him greatly.

“Offspring.” North didn’t respond to his female’s teasing. He dropped with a loud thump to his knees beside her sleeping support. “We have offspring.” He took the little cyborg from her.

The offspring stopped his struggles, gazed up at his father.

“I love you, Victorious.” North pressed his lips to the little cyborg’s forehead. “And I love you, Myrina.” He met his female’s gaze. “That you have given me this happiness, this—” His voice broke.

Envy poked at Truth’s heart. He wanted a female, longed for offspring, desired love, the intense type of love, the kind a warrior felt for a being he would kill for, die for.

But he also felt a deep sense of sadness, of loss, as he watched North with his family. The male’s planet rotations of excitement were over.

Captain hadn’t left the ship and his female’s side since their offspring was manufactured. Truth stifled a sigh. There was a 93.2569 probability North wouldn’t leave the ship now that he was a father.

Warriors met the females genetically destined to be theirs. If they were fortunate. Not every warrior would have that opportunity. They claimed those females, bred with them, manufactured offspring.

And their adventures ended.

Truth would find his female. Not finding her, spending his lifespan alone, wasn’t a fate any warrior desired. But he wasn’t in a rush to locate her.

He craved more thrills, more exploration, more battles, before that happened. His lifespan would be lived to its fullest. Boredom would be banished.

Once he’d sucked every bit of excitement out of the universe, he would search for his female.

Until then, he was free.

***

A planet rotation later, Truth escaped the oohing and aahing over the newly manufactured offspring and focused, with Dissent, on the mission assigned to them.

They perused the available fighter ships, had additional company during that task. Dissent’s female held her warrior’s hand and chattered about offspring, about vessels, about how females could add value to exploration assignments and a certain Captain should realize that fact.

Future, Captain’s fully mature offspring, trailed behind them with a sullen expression.

“This fighter ship has the earliest date of fabrication.” Dissent patted one of its panels.

They gazed up at the vessel. It was in pristine condition, as all the cyborg ships were, was fully functional and much too shiny for their requirements.

“Fighters ships are designed to accommodate more than a crew of two.” Future scowled. “I should have spoken up, not merely sent Father a private transmission. Then you would have supported my request to join the exploration team and he would have relented.”

There was only a 10.2593 percent probability Dissent would have supported that request. Every warrior on the Reckless processed how protective Captain was of his offspring. A prudent warrior wouldn’t interfere in that relationship.

Truth wasn’t a prudent warrior. There was a 79.2584 percent probability he would have spoken on Future’s behalf. The warrior had been training for missions since he was manufactured, was eager to prove himself to his father…and to himself.

And Truth projected he would have found Captain’s reaction entertaining…if he had survived it.

“Dissent supported my request, and it made no difference.” His friend’s female glowered at Future. “Captain, your father, said the mission was too dangerous for human females.”

“I’m a cyborg.” The male stuck out his chest. “We’re built for dangerous missions. The knowledge of millions of warriors resides in my databases.” He tapped his forehead.

“I’ve stunned a being in battle.” Dissent’s female lifted her chin. She was clearly proud of that limited experience.

“You’re fraggin’ fortunate.” Future shook his head. “I would do anything to take part in a battle.”

Captain would sever their skulls from their frames if they allowed his offspring to fight in a battle without his authorization. And Truth hoped there would be plenty of violent clashes on Nereid Negative One. His form vibrated with excitement.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 30th

By Cynthia Sax on August 30, 2020

I received first round edits/revisions from my Awesome Editor today on Holding Hoarse, the December free cyborg romance short story. I plan to complete these edits today. (fingers crossed)

I have one more short story in the next C.S. Sax short story collection to revise. I should be able to finish that this week and send the collection to my awesome formatter (the Dear Wonderful Hubby is now formatting my stories).

I hope, if all goes well, to play around with the first chapter of Containing Malice, the first story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February). My first chapters are often trashed and rewritten a few times. It takes some false starts to get them right. I expect this story to be no different.

And yes, my Facebook accounts are still in review. (big sigh) But I’m doing some absolutely amazeball writing so that’s one small upside.

Refuges And Writing Caves

By Cynthia Sax on August 29, 2020

The settlement Kralj built and rules on Carinae E is called the Refuge. There’s a reason for this name. Even the roughest, most violent ‘monsters’ (as he calls himself and beings like him) deserve to have somewhere they can feel safer, where they belong, where they find a sliver of peace, of self-care, of self-acceptance.

When I was a kid, there was a weeping willow type tree on our property. The tips of the branches reached the ground. It was like having a closed room in the middle of the field. No one could see the trunk, could see past the branches.

That was one of my favorite refuges (and, in recognition of that, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I planted a weeping willow type tree in front of our current home). I would take a book, slip between its branches, sit on the ground and disappear from the world, from everyone. I felt safer there. I felt at peace. The place calmed me.

Today, that refuge is the writing cave. When the world is dark and my soul is tired, I turn on my laptop, open either an unfinished story or a blank page, and I write, disappearing into the world I’m creating. It calms me. It restores me. It gives me the strength to face the rest of the world.

That’s where I am today. I hope that you also are able to spend some time today in your refuge, your sanctuary. That could be between the pages of a great cyborg romance or in a bubble bath or sitting on your front steps where you can watch the kids run through the sprinkler. I hope you go wherever you find peace.

You deserve to escape for a few moments.

Testing Truth – Nereid Negative One

By Cynthia Sax on August 28, 2020

In Testing Truth (releasing on September 15th), the cyborgs are assigned to explore Nereid Negative One. This is a small outpost planet. Ships stop there for emergency supplies and repairs. Very few beings live on Nereid Negative One permanently. It is covered with gray ash and isn’t a nice place.

As Dissent shares, “The planet is named Nereid Negative One because the first being who stepped upon its surface claimed zero was too generous a designation for it.”

He also adds, “One traveler called Nereid Negative One the place dreams go to die.”

(grins) It isn’t a pleasant place but it IS situated in the cyborg-controlled sector. According to Power’s mandate, they have to explore it.

Normally, the planets in my stories are named after stars. Nereid Negative One, being such a…well…unimpressive planet, is named after Nereid, Jupiter’s third largest moon. Nereid is notable for having the strangest orbit of all Jupiter’s moons and having ice on its surface.

Testing Truth – A Princess Named Nancy

By Cynthia Sax on August 25, 2020

The heroine in Testing Truth, the next cyborg romance (releasing on September 15th), is Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume. That’s her formal name, the name strangers and other royalty refer to her by, the name that is utilized on all official communications.

Her friends, her makeshift family, other loved ones call her Nancy. She is named after a dear reading buddy, Nancy R, which makes Truth’s female even nearer and dearer to my heart. I love Nancy R and I love Truth’s Princess Nancy.

(As an aside, I WILL warn you if you contact me and you have an awesome name, a name I haven’t yet utilized in a story, I will likely steal it for a future character. I’ll tell you before I do this. I have manners and sh*t. (grins) But it is a risk you take when you contact me.)

When Princess Nanette wants to be perceived as a regular being, she will introduce herself as Nancy. When she wants to put an unkind being in her or his place, she breaks out her formal name (and a super prissy attitude Truth finds extremely entertaining).

There are plenty of famous Nancys here on Earth but there are also quite a few famous Nanettes.

For example, Nanette Fabray, a Tony and three time Emmy winning actress, was also a passionate advocate for the rights of the deaf and hard-of-hearing. She was one of the first people to use sign language on TV and was one of the founding members of the National Captioning Institute.

Nanette Konig-Blitz was a holocaust survivor and a classmate of Anne Frank. She lectured and wrote about her experiences, earning a Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal Award.
