Muse Food – The Life Cycle Of Everything
As writers, we usually focus on the life cycles of the characters whose stories we’re telling.
How old is the heroine? How old does she have the ability to become? What could possibly end her lifespan? Etc.
But I try to also consider the lifespan of EVERYTHING around her.
Do the plants on her planet live forever or do they die at the end of their seasons? Do the insects feeding on these plants have the same life cycles? What happens to the dead plants and insects and other previously-living things?
THAT all adds to the world building, creating a fullness to our stories.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – October 6
Claiming Cure, the third core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in November), is with my Awesome Formatter aka the Dear Wonderful Hubby. (grins) It is creeping higher on his extremely long to-do list so I hope to have it back soon.
I’m continuing to craft Grid Locked, the fourth core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in March). This will definitely be a slower story to write and to edit because it features SO many previous cyborgs and their females. I get to catch up with all those beings before writing their small bits!

Claiming Cure And Why Beings Become Medics
A buddy of mine is a skilled medical doctor.
When I go to an event with her, at least one stranger will make a comment implying my friend became a doctor ‘for the money.’
That’s not at all why she became a doctor.
And that is certainly not why Cure, the cyborg hero of Claiming Cure, or Cyra, the human heroine, became doctors or medics or healers.
Cure, for example, is a cyborg and credits, their currency, are merely numbers in a database. He is extremely capable of changing those numbers to whatever he needs them to be.
He doesn’t need credits.
Cure became a medic for an entirely different (heart-shredding) reason.

Trimming The Roses
The forecast for October is hot and the roses are growing wildly. (grins) I had to trim them back or they’d take over the yard.
Having had some recent luck with burying pruned rose branches and sprouting new rose plants from that, I have decided to bury the branches I trimmed in the rose bush bed. I’m trying to fill out some bald spots.
I don’t know if it will work but it is worth a try. Gardening often means experimenting. That’s part of the fun. (smiles)

Cyra, his medic contact on Cancri B, knows that IS Cure’s true name.
Her friend, however, believes it is a joke.

Muse Food – What We See
I often think of the research needed for writing a satisfying story as a tree.
The research readers see are the leaves and the branches and the trunk above the ground.
But there is so much more research readers will never see. These ‘roots’ go deep. They give the story support. They provide fullness and energy to our tales. And…they are necessary.
No research is ever truly wasted. You might not use it on the page but it IS adding value.

Say The Words
When I first started writing romance, I sometimes didn’t push heroes and heroines to say ‘I love you.’ They SHOWED love in a gazillion different ways. But they didn’t always say the words.
I would receive messages from first readers asking me if the characters truly loved each other.
Those readers had doubts because they NEEDED to hear the words to believe them.
I think about that whenever I hesitate to tell someone I love them.
My Awesome Mom, for example, should know I love her, right? I show love in a lot of different ways. She shouldn’t need to hear the words.
Except she does.
Most people do. Including some of your loved ones.
Tell them you love them. Leave no doubt in their mind about how important they are to you.
You might feel awkward as f*ck about it but you won’t ever regret it.

A Reading Refuge
When I was a teen, I volunteered at a senior citizens residence.
One of my delightful ‘tasks’ was reading to an older woman who was blind and who was, unfortunately, slowly going deaf.
That was a scary concept to me.
She would be cut off both sight-wise and hearing-wise from the rest of the world.
But her sunny personality didn’t dim. She was lucky, she told me, because she had been a reader all her life. She had thousands of stories in her mind she could revisit at any time.
I had been a passionate reader also when I met her. But after she shared that revelation with me, I made reading a priority.
Reading is a refuge. We can escape into stories any time the world becomes too…much.
That’s amazing. And wonderful. And something to cherish and value.
We are all lucky to be readers.
