Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – February 25

By Cynthia Sax on February 25, 2024

Strike Zone, the first core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series, releases on Tuesday (Monday night if you’ve pre-ordered it)! Woot! I can’t wait for you to read this story, my friends. I love it. I think it is fun and happy and an awesome adventure.

I continue to craft the first draft of Drift Would, the second core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series. It is a fun adventure also. I think that will be a theme in this series. That and togetherness. (smiles)

Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Spritz yourself with your favorite ‘perfume’ whether that is vanilla from the baking you’re doing, citrus from the orange you peeled, or something delightful that comes in a bottle. Great smells are all around us.

Strike Zone

A cyborg devoted to duty…and to her.

***

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.

She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.

The only issue is…she has never participated in a retrieval mission.

Searching for assistance, she approaches the mate’s guard. The male, with his big broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.

Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Desperately.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to discreetly investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.

She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.

Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

***

Strike Zone is a standalone, mistaken-identity, Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features a cyborg warrior with a finely honed sense of honor, a human support being taking on her first dangerous mission, and an evil that threatens everyone in existence.

Strike Zone, Missions, And Hope For The Future

By Cynthia Sax on February 24, 2024

One of the (many) things I love about the cyborgs is their great hope for the future.

They’ve had a tough past. Now, that they are free, they have hope. Especially now that they know they might have genetic matches and the possibility of creating offspring.

And every mission increases the likelihood they’ll find those genetic matches. During missions, they interact with different beings and visit new-to-them planets. One of those beings might be the one they’re destined to love. (smiles)

Strike Zone And Stories To Re-Read

By Cynthia Sax on February 23, 2024

Strike Zone, the first core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series, is releasing on Tuesday.

It is designed to be read on its own but I know some reading buddies enjoy re-reading previous cyborg stories before a new story releases.

The key story to re-read is, clearly, Intrepid Encounter. Intrepid is the captain of the Dauntless. His Valkyrie female is on board. It would be awesome to reacquaint ourselves with their romance.

Intrepid Encounter also contains Argot and his female’s relationship as a secondary romance. Both of them remain on the Dauntless.

Other than Intrepid Encounter…hmmm… well, Power makes a brief appearance. Reading Seizing Power might be helpful.

But Intrepid Encounter is definitely the main story to possibly re-read. (grins)

Throwback Thursday – Testing Truth

By Cynthia Sax on February 22, 2024

On every team I’ve ever worked with, there has always been one sh*t disturber i.e. embracer of chaos. (On writing teams, there are usually several. – grins) They stir things up, cause others to think more creatively, thrive on disruption. And they are a valued part of the team. Because all that is necessary.

Truth is that being on his team.

And that is appealing to Princess Nancy because she needs someone who can change direction easily with changing circumstances. She is seeking to rescue her brother and she doesn’t know what she’ll find on the prison ship holding him.

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Strike Zone And The Rom Com Best Friend

By Cynthia Sax on February 21, 2024

The best friend in many Rom Com movies is, I believe, the best friend many of us would like to have. She is super supportive. She’s the lead’s biggest cheerleader. She is always there for the lead if anything goes wrong. She is good humored. And she lightens the mood.

Kesser, the heroine in Strike Zone, is a Rom Com best friend. Except in Strike Zone, SHE is the lead.

And she’s absolutely awesome in that role.

Muse Food – Grounded Boats And Hints In A Story

By Cynthia Sax on February 20, 2024

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted these grounded boats in Panama.

The sight of them immediately sparked questions.

Was their situation purely due to low tide or was it a result of the severe drought the region was experiencing? Why hadn’t the owners anchored the boats farther out? Were the tires deliberately placed in the mud? Etc. Etc.

We asked ourselves questions because we knew, by looking at the boats, that something was ‘wrong.’ Boats shouldn’t be grounded like that. They belong in the water.

Writers can also use actions or images to hint something isn’t quite right. In Drift Would, for example, the heroine, in one scene, touches her stomach. That’s not usually a casual gesture.

And it isn’t one in her case. I’m warning readers something isn’t quite right with the heroine by using that one seemingly throwaway sentence.

Use the unusual to spark questions in your readers.

Strike Zone – Fourth Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on February 19, 2024

Strike Zone, the first core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series, releases next week! Woot!

Today, I’m sharing the fourth and final scene from the very first chapter.

You can read the first scene here:

https://tasteofcyn.com/?p=11560

***

“Utilize one of the modified freighters.” Captain chose the vessel Strike projected he’d select.

Freighters were common transport ships. Weapons had been added to the cyborg-piloted freighters. That firepower was hidden on the vessels’ frames. Other modifications included increases in top speeds and an expansion of their monitoring ranges.

“Stock it with any weapons and other supplies you require.” There was no need for Captain to state specifics. It wasn’t Strike’s first mission. “Leave as soon as you’re able.”

Strike stood. “I’ll depart within the shift, Captain.”

“If you were going into battle, I’d tell you to fight hard, warrior.” The Valkyrie smiled at him.

“Fight only when necessary.” Captain cautioned him.

That was unnecessary information. He had heard Power’s instructions. “I’ll be covert.”

You’re a lucky bag of bolts. Grid’s transmission was edged with envy.

I could die. Strike was aware of the risks. If he was discovered by an enemy, his lifespan could end.

Assuming he didn’t defeat that foe.

He was a skilled fighter, both on the ground and in the sky. The probability of losing a skirmish was low.

But it wasn’t zero.

We’re aware of your good fortune, warrior. Their navigator sighed. The risk of dying was an attractant for most cyborgs, not a deterrent.

You deserve that good fortune. Argot defended him. Communicate with us when you’re able.

I’ll do that. Strike stalked off the bridge.

He passed brethren as he navigated through the hallways.

If anyone can uncover the source of the sound, it’s our second-in-command.

Leave some enemies for us.

Return in one piece, warrior. The males stationed off the bridge were as confident in his abilities as his fellow officers were.

Strike would strive to be worthy of that support. His shoulders squared.

He entered the docking bay.

There was a flurry of activity around one of the modified freighters.

“Captain said you’d be arriving.” Repercussion bumped against him. The male was stationed in loading. “You should take this with you, Second.” He handed Strike a missile launcher. “It’s a duplicate of Captain’s female’s weapon. I modified it myself. It took me fifteen planet rotations to do that properly.”

The Valkyrie was noted for having exceptional weapons. Strike juggled the missile launcher from his right hand to his left hand and back again. It had some heft to it. “I can’t take it, warrior. It’s yours.”

“I’ll modify another one.” Repercussion shrugged. “When you use it on the enemy, process that you’re not alone. Your brethren are with you.”

Cyborgs, especially D models like Strike, weren’t manufactured to operate on their own.

It was a struggle to suck back his emotions. “I’ll process that.” Strike’s voice was gruff. “Protect the Dauntless and Captain while I’m gone, warrior.”

“No damage will come to him.” Repercussion stated that with the solemness of a vow.

“I stocked you with nourishment bars, Second.” Yum slid a container into the cargo hold of the modified freighter. He was in charge of nourishment procurement. “Pirx berry-flavored, your favorite.”

“That’s appreciated.” Strike looked into the storage space.

“Beverage was also loaded.” The male waved one of his hands at those supplies.

Cyborgs didn’t require their liquids to be replenished. The beverage would only be required if he encountered a fully organic being.

That was unlikely. But… “It’s logical to be prepared for any situation.”

“That’s what I projected.” Yum’s head bobbed. “You can’t process what you’ll be facing out there. We hear rumors about this stretch of the border.”

Strike had heard the stories also.

There were tales of large creatures flying through space, of ships that disappeared with no explanation—never to be seen again, of debris fields that resembled asteroid belts, and other unusual activity.

He had to be prepared for anything.

“Homeland sent us some life-form-scan-blocking cloaks.” Those cloaks would be dangerous to don in the air. A freighter with no life-forms on it had a high probability of being shot out of space. But the garments might be beneficial once he landed on a planet’s surface.

“Two cloaks have been placed in the pack with the flight suits.” Repercussion transmitted a list of the items stored in the cargo hold to Strike.

“There’re excessive flight suits.” Strike didn’t require garments in every available size.

“It’s logical to be prepared for any situation.” Repercussion repeated what Strike had told Yum. “Warriors find genetic matches on missions.” His eyes twinkled with humor.

Yum and the other warriors situated around them nodded.

The probability he’d locate his genetic match on his current mission was 3.4588 percent. He would be focused on gathering intel about the potential threat to their kind.

But saying that would accomplish nothing except damage the males’ emotional systems. They hoped to, some planet rotation, locate their genetic matches while on missions also.

Strike chose not to address the comment. “I require five more handhelds.” He’d modify them to better track the pulsing sound.

A warrior rushed to retrieve the devices.

While those were loaded, Strike planned his mission in his processors. His assignment could be key to his kind’s survival.

Nothing could be left to variability.

One of the (many) things I love about the cyborgs is…they have millions of brethren and many of those brethren are friends.

Some of those friends have never met face-to-face. They interact purely through transmissions.

I view those relationships as being similar to the relationships we have online. There is genuine caring between beings. Many of the people I’ve ‘met’ online (including many awesome reading buddies), I’d do almost anything for. I love them. I think about them often. They are real valued relationships.

We don’t have to spend time in the same room with a being to care for them. Online relationships and transmission-only relationships are important and wonderful and just as valid. (big hugs)

Strike Zone And How Others Interact With Us

By Cynthia Sax on February 16, 2024

Strike, the cyborg hero of Strike Zone, serves on the Dauntless, a battle station. He is surrounded by his brethren and other beings.

Although he is Second-In-Command, he is treated as more of an equal than Intrepid, their captain, is. Beings joke with him. They tease him. They view him as a friend.

And I think that’s telling. He isn’t strict about hierarchy. He doesn’t care about his status. Yes, he has earned his role and he uses it to protect the beings he cares about and to serve his captain. But it isn’t a big part of his self-perception.

Which is great. Because his human heroine mistakes him for someone else. (grins)
