Project Hail Mary And Reluctant Heroes/Heroines
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about the SciFi/Alien/Saving-Earth movie Project Hail Mary and it WILL contain spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this wonderful, original and fun movie, you might wish to skip this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I finally watched Project Hail Mary and, my friends, it deserves the hype. It was entertaining. It was fun. It made me cry in spots. It was original.
And it NAILED the portrayal of the reluctant hero.
The hero didn’t want to go on a will-end-in-certain-death mission to save the world. AT ALL. He doesn’t understand why people would want to sacrifice themselves in that way.
And he has a massive fear of failure. He doesn’t believe he is made of hero stuff.
Yet, as you and I are shown, early on, he is already successful…as a teacher. He merely doesn’t see that.
He doesn’t see the admiration in the kids’ eyes when they look at him, when they respond to him. For them, he IS a hero. He IS someone to look up to.
We know he’s wrong about not being a hero. And we wait for him to realize that.
We continue watching. We turn the page. We care.
That is brilliant storytelling.
